The pickins are thin until payday rolls around. Money is short and there's none to spare. Although we've been wanting to save for a rainy day, the cupboards still need fillin' and we also need enough to have some fun. If that eagle flies on Friday then Saturday night is when the time is right. This week we'll be banking on that combined theme of payday, money and taxes. Belly up to the barroom country sounds of Faron Young, Lefty Frizzell and The Sons of the Pioneers and then find some rhythm and blues with The Fiestas, The Harlem Hamfats, Bobby Charles and Dom Flemons. It's all about cashing out every couple of weeks and spreading thin with savings being thinner. We've got greenbacks, dollar down payments, songs about payday, the taxman and that almighty dollar to remind us that, as Peter Case points out, that “there's two kinds of justice everybody knows, one for folks up on the hill and one for the others down below”.  And to further hammer it home…the balance of justice is just a mirror of the distribution of wealth.

The Harlem Hamfats recorded for Decca from 1936-40 or so, making several hundred sides under their own name as well as backing up singers and other entertainers. Consisting of the New Orleans trumpeter Herb Morand, Chicago clarinetist Odell Rand, pianist Horace Malcolm, brothers Charlie and Joe McCoy on guitar and vocals (and Charlie on mandolin), John Lindsay on bass and Pearlis Williams on drums, the group combined swing, dixieland and blues in an energetic way that kept their records on jukeboxes for a decade after they stopped recording. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-clark49/support

What comes to mind when you hear the word “Stoner?” In today's episode of Weed Words, we look back on the evolution of the word — from its shame-ridden roots in the early 20th century to its, well, rebrand! Over the last decade, cannabis enthusiasts have begun to reclaim the term as they speak out about having happier, healthier, and more productive lives that include weed. But even as cannabis is quickly legalizing and the meaning of the word is changing, not everyone has hopped on the bandwagon quite yet. Tune in for more exploration. Again, I no can sing, yet I love 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit?''Why Don't You Do Right?' by Kansas Joe McCoy & Herb Morand. From Wikipedia: "In 1936, the Harlem Hamfats recorded "The Weed Smoker's Dream". Band member McCoy later rewrote the song, refining the composition and lyrics. The new tune, titled "Why Don't You Do Right?", was recorded by Lil Green in 1941 with guitar by William "Big Bill" Broonzy. The recording was an early jazz and blues hit."

Well it's another episode of the DR&R Show...I do have to point out that we're sometimes broadcast on Brother Ralph's Chestnut Radio Internet Station. Ralph is a long time friend and …..well it just makes sense to "skinny-dip with the power of the Internet" on as many stations as possible! Make no mistake: HGRNJ is home base. Starting off the show is Roky Erickson and The 13th Floor Elevators from BULL OF THE WOODS..."Livin' On" from 1969. At this point Roky was just about ready to check out for a few decades so listen up! Baby Woodrose follows with "I'm gonna make you mine". Who says the Danes can't rock? Van Morrison and the original lineup of Them kicks ass with "1-2 Brown Eyes" And Steve Gibson and the Original Red Caps with one of my favorite cuts "Big Game Hunter" offa a 10" vinyl 78rpm from 1953 on RCA. Set 2: The Harlem Hamfats and their first "Oh Red". A great cut that Chuck Berry just had to have in the back of his head when he wrote "Maybelline"....Ronnie Hawkins and The Hawks killin' it with "Who Do You Love?" [Roulette 1963] features a very young Robbie Robertson kickin' ass with his Telecaster. The Saints from Brisbane, Australia and "Memories are made of this" gets a play once of twice a year because it's a great cut / Harvest 1978 / ETERNALLY YOURS. From the Aussies to the Scots with "Fight" by Sons and Daughters. A band made up of just that. Set 3: Jr. Wells tells his woman to "Shake it baby" a great cut with Buddy Guy slingin' the 6 string. Amy Winehouse & the Specials take it to the jungle with "Monkey Man"...Motown's own Bettye LaVette with a spiffy rendition of Kenny Roger's "Just Dropped In [to see what condition my condition was in]". Bettye lives just down the road from the Jungle Studios where this show is produced....and one of my favorite bands Kaleidoscope from the west coast killin' it with "You don't love me"...a song done by many artists but this is one of my favorites 'cause it's got David Lindley playing guitar on it! Set 4: Straying from our usual 10-12 song fading out the end of the show will be a short set started by "King" James Harman with our theme song: Love Jungle. I just love James and interviewed him many years ago but for some reason never edited and published....seems like it might get a debut pretty soon....wink wink...… Steve Earle....good god he's probably the only liberal member of the NRA. "Ashes to Ashes" off his great LP "Jerusalem" / Artemis 2002. Well we fade out with Quicksilver Messenger Service from the 1st LP..."Gold & Silver"....it really doesn't get much better... Next week, Brothers & Sister....adios!

Skinny dippin' in the oil o' joy.....Set 1 opening up the card game with a royal flush in my books! NRBQ from their very first self titled LP just re-released for the first time ever on vinyl by Omnivore Records and baby they nailed it! Covering Eddie Cochran's "C'mon Everybody". Country Music Hall of Famer sweetens the pot with "Baby, I Just Want You". Helping out Floyd is Cajun God Link Davis! Davis is a triple-threat cat....fiddle, sax, harmonica and he can sing! We'll hear more from Mr. Davis in the next round....Horace Andy stokes the pot with his version of Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine"...someone get me a spliff, mon! Mark Oliver Everett AKA The Eels is "Kinda Fuzzy" from all the action..... Set 2: Link Davis gets to sit at the "big pot table" and immediately bluffs with "Don't You Big Shot Me"...The Replacements won't fold and raise with "I Will Dare"....you know when your playin' poker with the big boys it pays to blend in like a "Chamelion" like Herbie Hancock from his genre breaking LP HEADHUNTERS. The Onion Radio News chimes in with a timely report on North Korea....Country Joe can't stand the tension and declares..."Hold On It's Comin"...Jessie White takes a break from his gig as a Maytag repairman and with his Jungle Drums declares...."We got the tenor sax, guitar and drums...we're all set to make a R&R record....all right now let's hear it" Set 3: After the game everyone sits back and partakes in their stimulous of choice...I'm guessin' that The Pretty Things' "Walking Through My Dreams" is hinting at Dr. Albert Hoffman's chemical compound LSD...remember that the good Dr. was the first. We all know how Willie Nelson relaxes so we played his NORMAL radio ad. Rosetta Howard best known for the first version of "If Your A Viper" plays a different song with The Harlem Hamfats.."Candy Man". And nodding out with The Jim Kweskin Jug Band from a soundtrack of my childhood..."If Your A Viper" offa their 1967 LP GARDEN OF JOY. Well that's it for this week my friends....I'm leaving you in the good hands of Canada's Mother Earth and "Soul Sacrifice"

To make things safer for you this Halloween we at the DRR Show headquarters found this Halloween Survival Kit on Etsy by the Canton Box Company: The contents of "fun" Halloween Survival Kit will help keep you safe during the most bewitching time of the year! All the contents are held in a wooden box for safe keeping. Contents include: CRUCIFIX: Helps fend of vampires and a variety of other evil creatures and spirits.WOODEN STAKE: Exterminates vampires when driven through the heart.HOLY WATER: Can be tossed on all evil creatures. Also comes in handy for the occasional exorcism.SILVER BULLETS: For when you cross paths with werewolves. These should be shot straight into the heart of the werewolf.GARLIC BULBS: To keep vampires at a safe distance – always keep on hand!MIRROR: Keep with you when you are crossing covered bridges – you’ll know exactly when to duck when that sneaky Headless Horseman comes up behind you. Also a handy item if you’re trying to sniff out ghosts or vampires since they do not have reflections and will not show up in the mirror.SALT: Toss a ring of salt around yourself when you are in the company of a witch - she won’t be able to touch you as long as you’re standing within the ring of salt! Thanks for listening....tell your drinkin' buddies about us!! Terry Knight & the Pack with a pimply faced, pre-pubescent Mark Farner on guitar counts it down with "Numbers"Hawkwind's early daze are some of my most cherished of theirs...I know, I know...the Lemmy Era Hawkwind can't be 'beat' but I'm spinnin' from 1969 with "Hurry up sundown". Not to be outdone Joe McCoy and the Harlem Hamfats sing an ode to Memphis Minnie: "Hoodooin' Woman". Jersey City's Black Hollies lay down a garage groove for Johnette Napolitano to bare her soul with the uber-cool "True to this".....Before all you cats get your shorts in a knot I'm thinkin' Sister Johnette isn't playin' on our team.....if you get my drift....dig?Speakin' of diggin....Bo Diddley shovels out a dirty beat via "The Twister" before Bill Wyman produced The End puts the last nail in the requiem as the DRR Show sets its sites for the finish line. Joe McCoy (May 11, 1905–January 28, 1950) was an African American blues musician. Joe McCoy played music under a variety of stage names but is best known as "Kansas Joe McCoy." Born in Raymond, Mississippi, he was the older brother of blues accompanist Papa Charlie McCoy. As a young man, he was drawn to the music scene in Memphis, Tennessee where he played guitar and sang vocals during the 1920s. He teamed up with future wife Lizzie Douglas, a brilliant guitarist known as Memphis Minnie, and their 1929 recording of a song called "Bumble Bee" on the Columbia Records label was a hit. In 1930, the couple moved to Chicago where they were an important part of the burgeoning blues scene. Following their divorce, McCoy teamed up with his brother to form a band known as the "Harlem Hamfats" that performed and recorded during the second half of the 1930s. At the outbreak of World War II Charlie McCoy entered the military but a heart condition kept Joe McCoy from service. Out on his own, he created a band known as "Big Joe and His Rhythm" that performed together throughout most of the 1940s. In 1950, at the age of 44, Joe McCoy died of heart disease only a few months before his brother Charlie. They are buried in Restvale Cemetery in Alsip, Illinois.
