In Episode 26 of Cult and Culture, Justin and Luke catch up with two members of short-lived 90s hardcore band End of the Line, Cory Linstrum (John Henry West) and Matt Anderson (Gravity Records, Heroin). They talk about coming up DIY, seeing Born Against play in their own garage, working with Ebullition to release their only album (now being reissued by Three One G), and the second (third? fourth?) wave of hardcore that the 90s brought with it. They also talk about the violence happening in San Diego at that time, the magic of the legendary venue Che Cafe and the scene it fostered, and the way that music helps keep people connected over decades in ways that nothing else can. They also dive deeper into Gravity Records, and some of the memorable releases including Man is the Bastard, Earthless, and Antioch Arrow. The concept of Cult and Culture began as a short segment created by Justin Pearson, an internationally known musician, record label owner (Three One G Records), author, and actor. He is perhaps best known as bassist for bands such as Dead Cross, The Locust, and Some Girls as well as vocalist for Deaf Club, Swing Kids, and Planet B. Having traveled the world touring in hardcore and punk bands since age 15, Justin has come to know and work with a broad spectrum of captivating personalities and brilliant minds, many of which are key figures in the realm of popular culture and cult followings alike-- from being on the soundtrack to John Waters' Cecil B. Demented, to acting in an Asia Argento's Incompresa, to playing in Dead Cross with Mike Patton and Dave Lombardo. Cult and Culture arose as an opportunity to document bits and pieces of the DIY-driven, subversive world of art Pearson identifies with- one that many are not aware of or perhaps have misconceptions about. Eventually, Pearson joined up with producer and bandmate Luke Henshaw (Sonido De La Frontera, Planet B, Satanic Planet, First Power Crew) to build the idea into a proper podcast, now recorded at his own PengOne Studios in San Diego. Henshaw has collaborated with hip hop legends such as Invisible Skratch Piklz' D-Styles and Q-Bert, Kool Keith, in addition to being immersed in the world of Cumbia alongside Sonido De La Frontera bandmate Karlos Paez (B Side Players). He also recently scored the music for upcoming documentary Sk8face, which tells the history of skateboard graphics. In this way, both Justin and Luke are influenced by a diverse array of subcultures that all have connected roots. John Waters was one of the first people interviewed for the podcast- an icon of both cult and culture. Since then, guests have included a broad scope of musicians, producers, authors, and anyone passionate about what they do-- anyone from Grammy-winning musician Juan Alderete (Mars Volta, Racer X, creator of Pedals And Effects) to actor Michael Malarkey (Vampire Diaries, Project Bluebook), from San Diego Black Panther Party members to longtime partners Nicola and Adam in electro-punk band ADULT. or The Satanic Temple cofounder Lucien Greaves (who would go on to form Satanic Planet with Luke and Justin as a direct result of their podcast conversation). The focus is not intended to be solely on people in any one realm, and because guests are friends and family, the conversations are frank, informal yet well-informed, and genuine. Pearson and Henshaw seek to achieve a casual openness, blurring lines between traditional guest and host. Cult and Culture is available on iTunes and SoundCloud and new episodes will be premiering on Brooklyn Vegan. You can find the latest episode premiere here. Links to the previous podcasts are below. The concept of Cult and Culture began as a short segment created by Justin Pearson, an internationally known musician, record label owner (Three One G Records), author, and actor. He is best known as bassist/vocalist for bands such as Dead Cross, The Locust, and Retox. Justin has come to know and work with a broad spectrum of captivating personalities and brilliant minds, many of which are key figures in the realm of popular culture and cult followings alike. John Waters was one of the first people interviewed for the project- an icon of both cult and culture. Other guests include a broad scope of musicians, producers, authors, and anyone passionate about what they do. In its infancy, segments were shorter, 10-20 minutes, and would be recorded while on tour. Since then, Pearson has collaborated with producer and musician Luke Henshaw (Planet B, Sonido de la Frontera) to build the idea into a proper podcast, now recorded at Penguin Studios in San Diego. The focus is not intended to be solely on people in any one realm, and because guests are friends and family, the conversations are frank, informal, well-informed and genuine. Cult and Culture episode 22 looks into the prolific career of San Diego's Mario Rubalcaba, best known as drummer of bands such as Earthless, Hot Snakes, Rocket from the Crypt, Clikatat Ikatowi, Off!, 411 and more, as well as guitarist in Chicano-Christ-- all of which is in addition to his time as a professional skateboarder. Mario gives insight as to how he found his way into various bands starting from a very young age. The trio make observations and parallels between his skateboarding style and his drumming. Those who may know Mario from only a few of his bands will find it fascinating to learn about the scope of his work, how unique and varied it is, and just how much influential music he has been a part of.

THE DOOMED & STONED SHOW ~Season 7, Episode 7~ This week, we're fortunate enough to converse with one of the world's finest psychedelic guitarists, Isaiah Mitchell of Earthless and Golden Void, who has also been tapped to join The Black Crowes on their forthcoming summer tour, as well. Billy Goate (Doomed & Stoned) and John Gist (Vegas Rock Revolution) chat it up with Isaiah about his beginnings as a musician, including early musical interests and influences, the origin of Earthless (yes, the band's name, too), anecdotes from their first and second appearances at Roadburn Festival, and Isaiah's obsession with early blues -- including a live demo of his latest acquisition: a 1930's acoustic blues guitar. Along the way, we've lined up some fantastic -- and surprising -- musical selections that we think you'll really dig!

Episode 12…the conclusion of our lengthy interview with the oft-referred to (in this podcast at least) Trevor William Church, the brainchild behind Beastmaker, Haunt, and a bunch of other very cool metal projects.Kicking off with the Merch Table, Jeff shows off a limited Earthless live record, Trevor shows us a MIJ BC Rich that he bought from Russia. Hmmmm. Long story short, he doesn't like it...because he can't "go" on it...needs a painted neck...so he can be gnarly. And them....Trevor shows off 2 of his dad's basses, including the 1957 P-bass his dad used to record Montrose, Van Morrison, and all the Sammy Hagar records. It's beat to shit, but the scars are earned. Then he shows off an early 80s Grover Jackson Electric Church custom Charvel that was made for his dad. Also live bathroom breaks because JD has a small bladder. Also his dad was not a fan of Beastmaker's "Satan shit". He talks about his love of Japanese pedals from the 80s...his board is mostly Orion pedals, but he has 100+ Japanese pedals from the 80s in a display case in his house. We learn about Trevor's distaste for cockroaches, and how Decibel magazine has supported him. We wrap up with some California heavy talk, and Trevor gushes about his buddy Francis Anger Roberts and his many projects (Old Man Wizard, King Gorm, etc.).Haunt:https://hauntthenation.bandcamp.com/Beastmaker:https://beastmaker.bandcamp.com/Magnetic Eye Records Black Sabbath Vol 4 Redux and Best of:https://magneticeyerecords.bandcamp.com/album/volume-4-reduxhttps://magneticeyerecords.bandcamp.com/album/best-of-black-sabbathBandcamp Special Selection - Luke Titushttps://luketitus.bandcamp.com/album/plasmaShit, we're already fans! "It's very different from our previous releases," admitted Isaiah Mitchell, guitarist and vocalist for California's psychedelic rock outfit Earthless speaking about the recently released 'Black Heaven', "but it was fun to do - something you wouldn't expect us to be doing. It's fun playing the songs live, that's for sure".The big difference Mitchell is referring to is the addition of more vocal tracks than ever before. Earthless are predominantly known as more of an instrumental band but Mitchell stresses that it was more what felt right with this album than a preconceived plan."I've always known I can sing, everyone's known I can sing it's just we didn't really wanna do anything vocal-heavy", he continued. "We had one song with vocals on it when we planned to make the record and then we got together and we had some other songs kicking around and I brought some songs in and the other guys liked them. They were strong so we thought let's put them in".In the full interview Isaiah talks about next February's Australian tour, the reception to 'Black Heaven', the difference between writing songs with vocals compared to instruments only, the writing process and how it differs, the musical climate that gave birth to Earthless and more. Isaiah Mitchell: Isaiah and his beloved Fender Stratocaster have been a legendary pairing that have collectively created creamy psychedelic sounds for records from such bands as Earthless, Golden Void, Howlin’ Rain and Black Elk Medicine Band. He was gifted with his first guitar at the age of Eight, but it wasn’t until his early teens when he’d heard Jimi Hendrix and had his mind blown that he decided what sort of lifestyle he wanted to persue; it was that of a face-melting, hair-swirling solo guitarist. In September 2016, he booked himself a tour of Australia and enlisted the help of Melbourne psych-rock 3-piece Seedy Jeezus to help fill out the jam-filled aura that surrounds him. This particular set was performed live-to-air in Melbourne on PBS 106.7FM’s Pojama People program and is filled with songs that have influenced Isaiah as a musician since he first picked up a guitar, as well some of his own solo works. Recorded live at the PBS FM Studios in Melbourne on the 21st of August 2016. Engineered by Jeremy Smith. Kid Congo Powers and his band of Pink Monkey Birds: To his mother, he’s called Brian, but to the rest of the world his name is Kid Congo Powers and his name has been attached to bands such as The Gun Club, The Cramps and Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. The Pink Monkey Birds started backing up Kid Congo in the mid-2000’s and together they’ve release five albums, touring around Australia in 2016 on the back of their latest album ‘La Araña Es La Vida’, from which this particular set was documented from by PBS 106.7FM’s Studio 5 Live crew. This band is the very example of the sound that gets created when you mix 60’s Chicano rock, southern soul and psychedelic funk. Recorded live at the PBS FM Studios in Melbourne on the 23rd of August 2016. Engineered by Paul Maybury and Alicia Saye. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 13th of November 2016. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.

Horris: Horris have been kicking around the local scene since 2011, demonstrating their high energy performances that involve a heavy element of crowd participation. Their debut EP ‘You Can’t Do Anything And Life Will Disappoint You’ is a 7 song compilation of their ability to combine chaotic drums, buzzing guitars, and scratchy vocals to make a high energy record that is sure to get the heart beating. Feathers: Starting off in 2006, this psychedelic witchgaze group have released a full length album through record label bon voyage, and accumulated a mountain of support slots for international bands like Best Coast, Earthless, and Vivian Girls. Their album ‘Hunters Moon’ was recorded over three hours in the now defunct Tribal Theatre, and their sound is a perfect balance of 60’s psychedelica and jangly 80’s pop.

We All Want To: Formed back in 2009, We All Want To is the brain child of Tim Steward, namely the front man of Brisbane institution ‘Screamfeeder’ to discover some melodies and hooks in slower tempo’s. A bulk of the material that you’ll be hearing in this set comes from the self-titled debut album that was released in 2010, and 2013’s “Come Up Invisible”. The show we’re about to delve into was recorded last year at The Underdog, and was the book-end to what had been a successful Brisbane Live Music Week that was celebrated by 4ZZZ and all of its listeners. Recorded by Matthew Hall. Mixed by Branko Cosic. Recorded at The Underdog, Brisbane on 29th of March, 2014. Dreamtime: Dreamtime are a psychedelic rock quartet that started life as a trio, with Zac Anderson on Guitar, Cat Maddin on Bass and Tara Wardrop on Drums, and saw their ideas outgrowing them, so they added Fergus Smith on Sitar and various other instruments. Their first self-titled album was released in 2011 and quickly followed it up with their sophomore release ‘Sun’ in 2012. Since then they’ve conquered venues across the pond in the United States and Japan, and have shared stages with the likes of Earthless, Deap Vally & Bardo Pond. Recorded by Josh Watson. Mixed by Donovan Miller at Nowhere Audio. Recorded at Shedstock, Lismore on the 8th of June, 2014. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 8-9pm, Friday 27 February 2015. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.
