150 Years Ago (January 1874) The editor of The Cold Spring Recorder, citing the burglary of Seth Secor's store on New Year's Eve and "satanic" vandalism inside the Rock Street schoolhouse, lamented: "Our village had a most unenviable reputation between the years 1865 and 1870; but, for several years past the public order has been comparatively well preserved. We regret to be compelled to record our conviction today that we, as a community, are relapsing into the former lawless and shameful state." The three young men accused of breaking into Secor's store offered to meet with an informant at the depot to sell the looted cigars, but only one showed up and was arrested. A second was arrested five days later in Dutchess County; the third remained at large. A resident who wrote an anonymous letter to the Recorder claimed he had opened the door of the saloon that doubled as the entrance to the courthouse and encountered three officers and the suspect arrested at the depot standing at the bar. The prisoner, in handcuffs, was sipping from a glass of rum. After transporting the two burglary suspects to the county jail in Carmel, Officer Morrison and Undersheriff Dykeman had a chilly return. Their driver, after leaving the turnpike, made a wrong turn in the dark and the officers didn't arrive home until 4 a.m. Brian Dailey, coming out of Patterson's store with a paper bag of flour, had confidently swung it over his shoulder when it burst. After three boys, ages 6 to 11, were convicted of stealing brass from Paulding, Kemble & Co., a judge sentenced them to nine days in the Town Hall jail. A police officer from Boonton, New Jersey, visited the village looking for a house painter who fled in a stolen horse and buggy valued at $300 [about $8,000 today]. Detectives from Dutchess County traced Thomas Hicks, accused of robbing and killing his employer, to Cold Spring. Hicks was arrested while waiting for his breakfast at Mrs. Welch's boarding house on Market Street. Police said he had the victim's pocketbook with $120 [$3,100] inside. An 18-year-old student was arrested at the schoolhouse in Fort Montgomery and taken to Albany to face charges by a 28-year-old woman that they had been married in 1872 and he was obligated to support her. He provided an alibi and was released. The Recorder reported: "The regular, weekly deposit of mud has again made itself manifest upon the boots of our men and boys and upon the shoes and dresses of our mothers and our village. Indeed, the same omnipresent stickiness is distributed upon every threshold, tracked through kitchen and parlor, and lies in brown flakes by the bedside when we wake in the morning." Petitions circulated for and against a proposal by residents who lived south of Indian Brook to secede from Philipstown. 125 Years Ago (January 1899) The directors of the Cold Spring National Bank declared a semiannual dividend of 2 percent. Mr. Muller of Hoboken, New Jersey, leased the saloon and cigar store from the estate of the late G. Snider. The Recorder opined about Gov. Theodore Roosevelt, who took office on Jan. 1: "The new executive has been called erratic, but if he lives up to his message New York State will have a fair governor and the charge will fall." The temperature on Monday, Jan. 2, fell to 16 degrees below zero, the coldest day recorded since Jan. 30, 1873, when it reached 28 degrees below, and a day in 1835 when it hit 29 degrees below. After John Delaney fell ill with the grippe [flu], Frank Early filled in for him as the Main Street railroad gate tender. The Recorder noted a state court ruling that allowed people to keep dairy cans if they were so old or worn they could no longer be used to store milk. Dr. John Holland, a graduate of the University of Munich in Bavaria who had worked at hospitals in St. Petersburg, London and Paris, joined the practice of Dr. G.W. Murdock. Dr. Holland was also said to be a talented violinist and pianist. Navigation of the Hudson River between Newbu...

Not only does New Jersey hold onto the blood, it can use the blood samples in any manner it chooses. When babies are born in New Jersey, state law requires that blood be taken from the newborns and tested for diseases such as cystic fibrosis, hormonal deficiencies, and other immunity issues. All states perform similar tests. But, after the testing is over, New Jersey’s Department of Health keeps the leftover blood for 23 years. The state does not ask parents for their consent to keep their babies’ blood, failing to even inform parents that it will hold on to the residual blood. The only way parents could learn about such retention is by proactively looking it up on one of the third-party websites listed on the bottom of the card they’re given after the blood draw. And, once the state has the blood, it can use it however it wishes, including selling it to third parties, giving it to police without a warrant, or even selling it to the Pentagon to create a registry—as previously happened in Texas. “Parents have a right to informed consent if the state wants to keep their children’s blood for decades and use it for purposes other than screening for diseases,” said IJ Senior Attorney Rob Frommer. “New Jersey’s policy of storing baby blood and DNA and using that genetic information however it wants is a clear violation of the Fourth Amendment rights of all New Jersey parents and their newborns.” The plaintiffs challenging this law are two Boonton parents, Erica and Jeremiah Jedynak, and Hannah Lovaglio, a Cranbury mother of two. “It’s not right that the state can enter an incredibly intimate moment, the tender days of childbirth, and take something from our children which is then held on to for 23 years,” said Hannah. “The lack of consent and transparency causes me to question the intent and makes me worried for my children’s future selves.” “As a mother, I deserve the right to decide whether or not the government takes blood from my son and holds onto it for decades past its claimed use.” Although all 50 states and the District of Columbia require blood screening for newborns, whether a state will destroy leftover newborn blood, return it, or keep it with a form of parental consent varies on a state-by-state basis. “What makes New Jersey’s program so uniquely disturbing is the complete lack of safeguards for future abuse and the lack of consent, which leave the program ripe for abuse,” said IJ Attorney Christie Hebert. “Parents should not have to worry if the state is going to use the blood it said it was taking from their baby to test for diseases for other, unrelated purposes.” New Jersey is not alone in facing legal issues for the lack of consent when obtaining blood and over what the state does with the blood. Texas, Minnesota, and Michigan have all faced lawsuits over their retention of blood samples without informed consent from the parents. The 2009 lawsuit in Texas resulted in the state destroying 5.3 million blood samples, and now, all blood samples obtained after 2012 must be destroyed after two years. A 2014 settlement in the Minnesota lawsuit resulted in 1.1 million blood samples being destroyed. In 2022, Michigan agreed to destroy 3 million blood spots, but that lawsuit continues to move forward. “It’s incredibly misleading for the state to tell parents they are simply drawing blood from their babies to test for diseases when it could be sold to third parties or used by other government agencies to build invasive databases or registries,” said IJ Attorney Brian Morris. “As Texas and other states have shown, these concerns aren’t hypothetical.” https://www.foxnews.com/politics/biden-xi-meeting-seal-deals-fentanyl-military-communications-white-house Biden-Xi meeting to seal deals on fentanyl, military communications, White House says Wednesday's meeting between President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping will address hard issues such as fentanyl supplies coming in from Asia and a lack of military communication, the White House said. Fox News spoke with NSC Coordinator for the Indo-Pacific Kurt Campbell this week — Campbell was just recently nominated to become deputy secretary of state. "I can tell you that President Biden intends to make very clear to President Xi to get ready. He's going to be dealing with President Biden for the next five years," Campbell told Fox News Digital. "These are tough diplomatic encounters," he continued. "President Biden has a lot of experience. They've known each other a long time. This is an important meeting. It'll be intense." Biden and Xi shook hands in San Francisco Wednesday. One key talking point for the two world leaders is the ongoing fentanyl crisis in the United States. "The president tasked us several months ago to try to come up with some sort of progress on one of the most terrible things that is a blight on America, the fentanyl crisis," Campbell told Fox News Digital. "So we've worked over the course of several months with Chinese interlocutors demanding progress on cutting off support from precursors that are produced by Chinese companies and then shipped largely to Latin America. And then they make their way up into the United States." "We're going to have to see how it's implemented," Campbell continued. "But so far, we believe the Chinese are going to take consequential steps that will essentially help us get a handle on really one of the most terrible drug epidemics the United States has ever faced. There's a back and forth on this. If they, in fact, make these arrests and shut down these companies, then we will be lifting a few sanctions." Another major concern to be addressed between Biden and Xi is the trend of increasingly common incidents between the Chinese and U.S. military. Government officials have reported that communications between China and U.S. military commands has become difficult, with Chinese military leaders refusing to meaningfully converse with their U.S. counterparts. "We seek to establish responsible mechanisms that can deal with communications in a crisis to prevent escalation and inadvertence. And I believe that the Chinese will come around to see that some of this is also in their best interest as well," Campbell added. https://dailycaller.com/2023/11/14/national-education-association-teachers-union-strike/ Teacher’s Union That Encouraged Teacher Strikes Now Faces Its Own Employee Rebellion The National Education Association (NEA) has a labor strike on its hands as its 48 employees protest low wages, Axios reports. The NEA, which represents 3 million educators, has encouraged several massive teacher strikes in past. Now, its own employees have voted unanimously to strike, claiming that wages have not risen to meet surging inflation in recent years. Thousands of NEA-affiliated Portland teachers went on strike in October over low pay and large class sizes, among other issues. The strike is ongoing. Teachers in Massachusetts and Columbus enjoyed NEA support while they went on strike last year. “The NEA is going to have step up and honor the values of the organization,” the bargaining chair for the union representing the NEA’s staff, LaToya Johnson, said. Johnson said she hoped that the organization would give their employees the same benefits they fought for the teachers they represent to have. “NEA has engaged in negotiations in good faith,” an NEA spokesperson told Axios. “[A]nd continues to apply a solutions-based approach to resolve the outstanding issues in a manner that addresses articulated priorities of AFSE while also balancing the strategic priorities of NEA and its members.” The NEA, along with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), collaborated with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to decide on when and how in-person education would be allows after the COVID-19 pandemic, according to emails obtained by Americans for Public Trust. https://www.breitbart.com/entertainment/2023/11/13/as-the-marvels-bombs-disney-doubles-down-on-pushing-lgbtq-streaming-shows/ As ‘The Marvels’ Bombs, Disney Doubles Down on Pushing LGBTQ Streaming Shows The Walt Disney Company is rolling out more LGBTQ content as its latest superhero movie The Marvels crashed and burned at the box office on its opening weekend. The Disney+ drama series Culprits focuses on a gay domestic relationship between two men played by Nathan Stewart-Jarrett and Kevin Vidal. The show focuses on Joe (Stewart-Jarrett), whose past criminal life threatens to re-emerge and disrupt the quiet suburban existence he has built with his male fiancé Jules (Vidal) The series — which is streaming on Disney+ in the U.K. and Hulu in the U.S. — also stars drag queen comedian Eddie Izzard, who now apparently goes by the name “Suzy Eddie Izzard.” In December, Hulu is set to debut the new documentary We Live Here in the Midwest — a look at gay, transgender, and “non-binary” families that live in small towns and cities throughout America’s heartland. Among the families profiled in the documentary are those with transgender parents. “What my dad was feeling and why she felt like she did, was more than just her. There are more people out there who are like this,” said one child whose father transitioned to become a “woman.” In another scene, a “non-binary” student discussed how she is treated in class. “The students believe that ‘non-binary’ do not exist,” she said. “I’m here right now so we do exist.” We Live Here in the Midwest is set to debut on December 6. Disney has embraced LGBTQ messaging in its entertainment aimed at children and families. As Breitbart News reported, Disney along with Netflix put out more LGBTQ content than any other studio in Hollywood in 2022, according to a GLAAD report. GLAAD said Disney released 59 films in 2022, and 24 of them were so-called “LGBT inclusive films.” In the past two years, Disney has fought Florida over its anti-grooming Parental Rights in Education law, created multiple transgender characters for its children’s shows, put gay characters at the center of its big-budget movies, and even launched an LGBTQ-themed apparel line. This year, Disney eliminated 7,000 jobs worldwide as its profitability cratered. CEO Bob Iger is planning on slashing an additional $2 billion in spending in the months ahead.

Wraz z pojawieniem się w parafii ks. About The GuestMark Signorelli currently serves as Headmaster at Lumen Gentium Academy, a classical Catholic high school located in Boonton, NJ.  Prior to occupying this position, he was the Director for a Classical Studies program within the Chesterton Network of Schools.  In addition to over twenty years of experience as an educator, Mark has also written extensively for a wide variety of journals, including the Imaginative Conservative, Arion, Modern Age, Public Discourse, the University Bookman, and Front Porch Republic.  He currently writes at his own site, The Classical Corner, and has authored several books. Show NotesPart 1: As a master teacher, Mark brings years of experience to us about what classical writing ought to look like. Reflecting on a few of his substack essays, we explores many of his ideas and how he incorporates them into his teaching approach. In this episode, Mark unpacks what our goals are for teaching students to write while taking us back to the classical tradition of teaching excellent composition.  He also gives evidence that traditional classical writing instruction actually better prepares students for the College Board exams! Some questions and topics we cover in this episode: What is the purpose of writing? Is it simply to help student prepare for college or is there something more? How do want our students to think?  How classical writing builds authentic confidence in students What texts to use to help students learn how to write well How does a research paper approach differ from the classical rhetorical approach to writing? Part 2: Mark discusses poetry!  His experience is that students find great joy in poetry and it awakens their sense of play. It helps them develop style and voice in writing. This is a fun discussion that you will not want to miss! Resources and Books & Mentioned In This EpisodeThe Classical Corner with Mark Signorelli (Mark's Substack)Down with the Research Paper by Mark SignorelliPoetry as a Form of Life by Mark SignorelliSome Principles for a Classical Writing Program by Mark SignorelliCicero: Rhetorica ad HerenniumQuintillianThe Art of Rhetoric by AristotleCategories by AristotleShakespear SonnetsPilgrim at Tinker Creek by Annie DillardThe Writer's Workshop: Imitating Your Way to Better Writing by Greg RoperThe Feynman Lectures on Physics by Richard Feynman"Introduction to Poetry" by Billy CollinsDana Gioia poetryNew Science by Giambattista Vico Mark TwainGeorge MacDonaldTolkienMontaigneFriedrich Schiller's Play DriveNotes Toward A New Rhetoric by Francis ChristensenJohn Witherspoon William WordsworthFrom Plato to Postmodernism: Understanding the Essence of Literature and the Role of the Author by Professor Louis MarkosA Generative Rhetoric of the Sentence by Francis ChristensenTales from Shakespeare by Charles Lamb and Mary LambAesop's Fables by AesopNorms and Nobility by David HicksEssays by Michel de MontaigneLectures on Rhetoric and belles lettres by Hugh Blair__________________________________________This podcast is produced by Beautiful Teaching, LLC.Support this podcast: ★ Support this podcast ★ https://www.classicaleducationpodcast.com/supportOUR MISSIONWe exist for the benefit of both parents and teachers. Nicole Teitler is not originally from New Jersey, but we're not going to hold it against her. Originally from Long Island, Nikki On the Daily, her personal brand, moved here just over a year ago (we would say that's a great move) and has fallen in love with the Hoboken and Jersey City communities. Segment 1Nikki started Nikki On the Daily as a byline in her journalism career, but has since grown it into a brand within herself. Now she works with local businesses around the state helping them tell their own brand stories. Nikki also loves traveling around her communities to visit cool places and share that with her own community and followers! Today in New Jersey History: Charles F. Hopkins, the last surviving New Jersey Civil War Medal of Honor recipient, died on February 14, 1934 in Boonton, New Jersey. Hopkins was awarded the medal for carrying a wounded soldier off the battlefield at Gaines Mill, Virginia in 1862. He also served as the mayor of Boonton.   Segment 2Nikki discusses the current demand for "creators" among businesses. The year 2020 was a harsh lesson for some businesses that there is a need to connect with their customers and communities beyond the four walls of their business. It is also important to understand who that community is and where they "hang out" on social media. We also discuss when it's a good time for businesses to reach out to someone like Nikki.  New Jersey Fun Fact: Camden, NJ was the site of the first ever drive in movie theater!Segment 3We talk about some basic things businesses can do to help drive engagement and grow. To round out the episode, Nikki describes her relationship with the community at-large. Immersing herself into everything Hoboken and the surrounding areas has to offer has been humbling for her, but as New Jersey tends to do, it quickly became home.TasteBuddy: nikkionthedaily.comInstagram: @nikkionthedailyEmail: nteitler@gmail.comThank you to our sponsors:Albert & Whitney CPAs awcpasllc.comContact the show: greetingsfromthegardenstate@gmail.comWebsite: greetingsfromthegardenstate.comFollow us on Instagram: @greetingsfromthegardenstateMusic (used with permission): "Crazy" by Manny Cabo www.mannycabo.comSupport the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/GardenState)

Since we only have special people here in the dHarmic Evolution, we got a really special young lady to join us today.  Strap up your seatbelts, because we're taking a ride today from the Music City all the way to Georgia. Ladies and gentlemen, we've got Beth Crowley! Beth first gained recognition on YouTube back in 2011. She was inspired by a comedic group called Axis of Awesome and she posted a medley of popular songs titled, “Greatest Song Ever Written.” The song was quickly picked up by Reddit, BuzzFeed, and Tumblr, and now this video has over a million views on YouTube. From 2014, Beth already has released one full-length album, two EPs, and numerous singles. Her book-inspired music includes songs based on the Dark Artifices series, The Divergent series, the Lunar Chronicles, Harry Potter, the Hunger Games, The Fault in Our Stars, the Shatter Me series, and many more. She's also written several commissioned custom songs for books and book series. Coming from Nashville and now back in Georgia, Beth continues to write and release new music. She's also started writing her first young adult novel. It was a real pleasure learning about Beth Crowley, her music, and all the things that she's doing in her book. There's a lot more to see of her in the future. But for now, let's get to know more about her here on the dHarmic Evolution! More about Beth Crowley Beth Crowley wants to thank her listeners for continuing to support her dream of writing meaningful music, and if you haven't listened to her yet, check out all her links below. She is most active on Instagram as it is more interactive, but you can look at all the social media platforms provided below! Quotes: 04:20 “I think a lot of people had that moment this past year of being like, “Why am I away from things that are important to me if I don't have to be?” 13:00 “I love lyrics and I love language and I just had the imagery for this song of where storms are, like very impactful and sometimes terrible but I was fascinated by the idea that there are people that actually seek them out like they get some kind of reward out of going into the storms rather than going away from them.” 19:11 “My ideal situation is to be able to traditionally publish this book and have the soundtrack that goes with it and be able to tour and actually play. Like, have a book tour and play music at the same time. I think that would be such a cool format for touring.” 23:27 “I hope that I'm in a position someday where I would be able to have a series of shows and not have to worry about nobody showing up for them. Because I've definitely been there where I had a show that just nobody came to and that's very humbling.” 37:45 “It really is an interesting combination of being so satisfied with the music but also, all of the memories and associations that come with the experience and so I'm just really grateful that I think that's probably something that not everyone is lucky enough to have, that they not only have an album that they really believe in but they had a great experience doing it, and so just everything about it was more than I could have hoped for.” 47:54 “I would say the biggest thing is don't go for that instantaneous viral moment. Build a foundation, which takes time. If you're building a house, you build a foundation, and you do it slowly and carefully, so you can have the rest of the house be supported by that. It doesn't have to happen quickly. If you stick with it, and you work hard, it's not like a guarantee that stuff will happen for you, but it certainly increases your chances. But you have to make things happen for yourself. You can't sit back and wait for them to happen.” Timestamps:  01:06     Introducing Beth Crowley 02:32     How was Beth's move from Nashville to Georgia? 07:04     Listen to “Storm Chaser” by Beth Crowley 10:59     What is the metaphor and what is Storm Chaser about? 13:41     How was her experience filming a video of the writing process for Storm Chaser? 15:12     How was Beth's process of creating a song? 17:17     What are Beth's tricks on hanging onto the ideas and getting something 18:24     Aside from being a songwriter, Beth is also writing books and is writing her first novel. 20:12     Is Beth performing or has any plans on taking her music to Georgia? 21:54     The advantages of using online platforms to reach out to a larger audience 23:47     Beth shares about live streaming on YouTube, Facebook, and other platforms. 28:09     What is “YOU'RE EXHAUSTING” about? 29:25     Listen to “YOU'RE EXHAUSTING” by Beth Crowley 32:30     Beth shares the production of her songs and how she met her producer, 35:46     How was Beth's first album project back in 2014? 40:25     What does Beth do for downtime or chilling out? 43:26     What is Beth's main instrument? 44:10     What are Beth's goals in the future? 46:15     What is the best place for people to connect with Beth Crowley? 47:31     What does Beth want to say to the audience, especially the young upcoming musicians? 49:34     Listen to “Ride On” by James Kevin O'Connor Spotify Playlist:  Check out our three dHarmic Rising Stars playlists and listen to great artists who have been a guest on the show. Mental Health Awareness month  in May is here and there are ways you can stay positive, calm and active. He also wrote a book about it called "Conversation With A Desperate Man". In the second segment we chat with Nicole Delli Bovi-Kubach aka NikkiFit and Chef Via Melissa about ways to combat anxiety and depression by eating healthy and working out.   Anxiety and Depression can be very hard to handle especially in troubling times. There are many things that can help ease the uneasiness.  Working out and eating right can really truly help with those anxious feelings. Regular exercise releases “feel good” endorphins (natural cannabis-like brain chemicals) and other natural brain chemicals that enhance your wellbeing.Research has shown that regular exercise can release overall levels of tension, elevate and stabilize your mood, improve sleep, and also improve your self-esteem. Also eating the right foods and taking specific vitamins can help as well.  Listen to this episode to get great tips on fighting those awful feelings that come with anxiety and depression... we get great advice from all of our guests on this subject who are in the backyard of Weston, Connecticut, Westchester County, NY as well as Boonton, New Jersey! https://uncorkingastory.com/author-services/conversation-with-a-desperate-man/https://www.yourdailydosetribe.com/Jim is the founder and chairman of the Fairfield County Bar Association's Wellness Committee, and is a frequent speaker on the topic of mental health in the legal workplace. I met Sye in the studio at The Vault; Tyler Braddocks recording studio in Boonton, NJ. I was interning for free and barely able to pay my rent, but the artists I met there made it all worth it. Sye is a rapper and songwriter from Rivers Edge, New Jersey. He's built a fanbase over the last few years and began his career under the name Rightful Disciple before transitioning to 'Sye' in late 2019. The new name fits him well, and his versatility is apparent in his flows and even more so in his hooks. He's the type of artist that can leave you with a stank face after hearing the verse and later that day you'll still have the hook lodged in your head. Seeing the evolution of Sye and myself has been a rewarding experience. We had the opportunity to write, record and shoot a video for our song, "5 Fingers" that appeared on his first EP as 'Sye', titled "https://open.spotify.com/album/7fncdNbNskJc9j9z3vd21Z?si=KZvkM7blQa-1NDLWqllDYg (Everything in Between)." I suggested a hook, Sye suggested a beat and we came together to create something special. Dreaming about lo mein on the season finale of Pod Yourself A Gun. On the latest episode, Rolling Stone chief television critic and co-author of The Sopranos Sessions, Alan Sepinwall, returns to talk to Matt and Vince about the final episode of The Sopranos season 3, "Army of One." In the last pre-9/11 Sopranos episode, everyone’s favorite fail-stunad is at it again. The principal has a DNA match on AJ's peepee, and Tony thinks military school will straighten the little piss bandit out. He'll never get to be Donald Trump’s helicopter pilot if he doesn't learn some discipline. During their talk, the guys decide when it’s okay to hit your kids, and try to find out if David Chase has heard the show. Let’s hope not! Hey! If I don't do it who will? This is a band I was in from around 1992....we recorded the original tracks at Mixolydian Studios right here in my hometown of Boonton, NJ....some overdubs [hand claps, etc] were done in a studio in Riverdale, NJ. All the members of this recording were in other bands and we did this as a favor for a guy who was starting up a record label. As it turned out we got the lead off track to his compilation: In Wig City on Buy Or Die! Records out of Hackettstown, NJ....never far from home is my motto! 1 gig on a Buy Or Die! show and that was it....Mef & Susan are the singers...Mef was in a band with her then husband called The Partners [I was in the band on lead guitar for their 1st CD]. Sue was a go-go girl living with Brian who handles the lead vocals...Drummer Bob was in The Pseudo-Realists and The Partners as well as myselfThis song got voted as "the best summer song that should've been blasting out of every car radio"....by a local music mag.dig it and let me know if you want more of this stuff by emailing me at:mcmickster@optonline.netThanks for listening!

After college, Parzero did a two year stint at Boonton under state championship coach Gus Modla, then eight years under Smolyn at Lenape Valley where he was an assistant. After being mentored by some of the best coaches in North Jersey, Parzero accepted a position as the head coach at North Warren where he took the reigns of a team that hadn't won a game in several years and turned them into a team who frequented the state playoffs. From there, the rest was history! His record as a head coach is as follows: 2009 North Warren 4-6 2010 North Warren 6-4 2011 North Warren 6-4 2012 North Warren 8-3 2013 North Warren 8-3 2014 North Warren 6-4 2015 North Warren 7-3 2016 Newton 8-2 2017 Newton 12-0 Listen to the entire interview here.
