What's that I hear? Why, it's another ensemble song...but this one...is angry! Yes, for our next installement in our Ensemble Song miniseries, we're discussing "Do You Hear the People Sing?" from Les Miserables, by Claude-Michel Schoenberg, Alain Bubil, and Herbert Kretzmer. Opening in 1985 under the auspices of the Royal Shakespeare Company, the song has been a global phenomenon for 40 years. But is it any good? And why, exactly, are these men so angry? Here's a fun find from this collection. My father really loved his country music too besides all that jazz, pop and classical. This is the kind of country and western music that was kind of between the fiddle-led twang of early country and the days of outlaw country, although you will hear one of those outlaws from his early days first. This album is filled with memorable songs and some great memories that went beyond those songs. You know how music triggers those. So, get ready to hear several great singers from what I think was a great era in Volume 207: Good Country Record 1. More information about this album, see the Discogs webpage for it. 00h 00’00” Skördefest 00h 01’36” Presentación 00h 04’19” Cabecera 00h 05’22” Inicio 00h 06’03” Overtura 00h 10’13” Paths of leaves and needles 00h 12’01” Where you go I go with you 00h 18’03” Stone King 00h 21’08” Down to the sea 00h 25’32” Bad harvest 00h 32’53” No 00h 38’11” He’s our pilot 00h 40’16” Never 00h 46’14” Golden wheatfields 00h 48’32” All who are grieving 00h 52’31” We open up the gateways 00h 56’47” Peasants at sea 01h 01’14” Lice 01h 06’32” In the dead of darkness 01h 10’35” A Sunday in Battery Park 01h 15’30” Home 01h 19’34” American man 01h 24’31” Dreams of gold 01h 28’20” Summer rose 01h 32’59” Emperors and Kings 01h 37’16” Twilight images calling 01h 43’54” Queen of the praire 01h 50’02” Wild grass 01h 56’30” Gold can turn to sand 02h 03’43” Wildcat money 02h 07’59” A miracle of God 02h 12’30” Down to the waterside 02h 14’50” Miscarriage 02h 16’41” You have to been there 02h 23’13” Here I am again 02h 30’17” With child again 02h 33’00” Rising from myth and legend 02h 36’02” I’ll be waiting there 02h 42’41” Curiosidades y anécdotas 02h 44’20” Aldrid

LES MISERABLES COMPOSER: Claude-Michel Schonberg LYRICIST: Herbert Kretzmer BOOK: Alain Boublil, Claude-Michele Schonberg, Jean-Marc Natel SOURCE: Victor Hugo's novel Les Miserables (1862) DIRECTOR: Trevor Nunn and John Caird CHOREOGRAPHER: Trevor Nunn and John Caird PRINCIPLE CAST: Randy Graff (Fantine), Terrence Mann (Javert), Colm Wilkinson (Jean Valjean) OPENING DATE: Mar 12, 1987 CLOSING DATE: May 18, 2003 PERFORMANCES: 6,680 SYNOPSIS: Jean Valjean is a convicted thief who attempts to rebuild his life with a new family while being mercilessly hunted by the pious Inspector Javert. As these two men battle for their souls, the Paris streets are littered with a political revolution that will forever alter the lives of these two men. Robert Meffe traces the development of Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel, and Herbert Kretzmer's epic mega-musical, Les Misérables through inception and how it created the template for musicals that would successfully fuse their scores with popular musical forms. Significantly, the creative team of Trevor Nunn and John Napier struggled to adapt the French novel's storyline in a way that would resonate with a contemporary British audience both in pacing and the application of universal themes. The show's success inspired a fleet of musicals whose plots waxed epic including The Phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon, and Titanic. Robert Meffe- Broadway: Associate Conductor of Little Women and the last six years of Les Misérables, keyboards for Evita (2012 revival), Newsies, The Phantom of the Opera, Avenue Q, Spelling Bee, Grey Gardens and Bombay Dreams. National Tours: Music Director of Evita, The Phantom of the Opera, Associate Conductor of Les Misérables, Sunday in the Park with George. Off-Broadway: Myths & Hymns, Violet, The Prince and the Pauper, and Gutenberg! The Musical!. TV: Encore! (Disney+), Earth to America (TBS), Renee Fleming-Live at Lincoln Center (PBS). On July 1st last year, a traditional day of celebration and protest in Hong Kong, pro democracy activists stormed the Legislative Council complex (Leg Co) and broke into the legislative chamber. One protestor, Brian Leung Kai-ping, seized the moment and stood on a desk to deliver a memorable speech calling for solidarity in the protest movement, and for the wider citizenry of Hong Kong to join them in the occupy. It was a speech of such passion and eloquence, the bravest speech we added to Speakola last year. To increase the stakes, Leung removed the mask he had been wearing to reveal his identity to the assembled media, to the Chinese authorities and to the world. In this episode, Tony chats at length to Brain Leung who talks about the movement, the night of the occupy, the speech, and what has happened since. He also talks to author Antony Dapiran, who released City On Fire: The Fight for Hong Kong this year and who is fantastic at explaining a basic political background, If you're well schooled in Hong Kong politics and want to skip Ant's introduction, Brian Leung starts at 30.00mins. After the interviews, we play Leung's speech, first in Cantonese, and then with an English overdub. It's the first foreign language speech we've featured on the podcast, and thanks to Melbourne journalist Wing Huang who voiced the English version. Here is Brian speech with transcript. Tony's books are available online and at his website. Send an email to swap details for signed copies. Hosts Briana Phipps, Jacque Borowski, and Alexis Torres discuss the Broadway Musical Les Miserables. Les Misérables is a 2012 British-French-American epic romantic musical period drama film produced byWorking Title Films and distributed by Universal Pictures. The film is based on the musical of the same nameby Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg which is in turn based on the 1862 French novel by Victor Hugo. The film is directed by Tom Hooper, scripted by William Nicholson, Boublil, Schönberg, and Herbert Kretzmer, and stars an ensemble cast led by Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, and Amanda Seyfried. The film tells the story of Jean Valjean, an ex-convict who, inspired by a kindly bishop, decides to turn his life around. He eventually becomes mayor of a town in France and owner of a factory in that town. He is always alert to the risk of being captured again by police inspector Javert, who is ruthless in hunting down law-breakers, believing t
Bring Him Home, from Les Miserables, is a beautiful and moving prayer-in-song that has developed meaning and identity outside the hit musical. Taking part in the programme: The celebrated tenor, Alfie Boe, has sung this many times in the West End and on Broadway; he discusses what the song means to him. Herbert Kretzmer talks about the agonising process of writing the lyrics. The Greater Manchester Police Male Voice Choir recorded a version especially for the programme; one of their members describes singing Bring Him Home at the funeral of PC Dave Phillips in November 2015. The original Cosette, from Les Miserables, Rebecca Caine now sings this song - written for a male voice - regularly as part of international recitals. And for Becky Douglas it will forever be a reminder of her daughter whose death inspired the foundation of a leprosy charity. Jeremy Summerly, Director of Music at St Peter's College, Oxford plays through the piece and describes why it moves us emotionally. Producer: Karen Gregor.

Before my time (“Chasing ice”).

This week Sue Lawley's castaway is the journalist and songwriter Herbert Kretzmer. Born in South Africa in 1925, he came to Europe after World War II. For a while he lived in Paris, playing piano in a bar. He rubbed shoulders with Jean Paul Sartre and became friends with one of France's greatest singer-songwriters Charles Aznavour. The two formed a musical partnership and Kretzmer re-worked many of his songs into English - including the hits Yesterday, When I Was Young and She, which was more recently recorded by Elvis Costello for the film Notting Hill. His day job was as a journalist and Kretzmer wrote celebrity profiles for the Daily Express. He says his most memorable interviewees were "writers and fighters", including George Foreman, Muhammad Ali, Truman Capote and Arthur Miller. But it wasn't until he was nearly sixty that he had his greatest success. The director Cameron Mackintosh was working on Les Miserables but did not have a 'book' - that is, a set of songs that he could produce. He remembered a chance meeting he'd had with Kretzmer, recalled the songs he'd written and his connection with France - and invited him to write the lyrics. The show has been running in London for the past 19 years and has played all over the world. Now aged 78, he continues to work. He is currently collaborating with the former ABBA musicians, Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus on another musical.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: Gymnopedies by Yikin Seow Book: The Great War and Modern Memory by Prof Paul Fussell Luxury: Zippo Lighter
