All November we RAISE THE CURTAIN & BELT THE CHORUS for a musicals themed month and we're heading to a fictional Russian town called Anatevka for a folksy tale of a pious and poor Jewish family. This beloved stage show ran very long so perhaps it's no wonder that Norman Jewison's adaptation of “FIDDLER ON THE ROOF” was a box office smash for 1971. In it we meet Tevye' and his family. He's got 3 daughters at marrying age and the good book dictates that their marriages be arranged to benefit their family and status. Such is tradition! But times are changing in Eastern Europe in the early 20th Century and these kids got their own crazy ideas. With the weight of tradition and the dangers of society upon them can Tevye bend without breaking his faith? Starring Chaim Topol, Norma Crane, Leonard Frey and more. Music by Jerry Bock and adapted by John Williams. Angela has booked this month and much of it is Bob's introduction to many musical styles. The only one he's seen for this coming month is “Bye Bye Birdie” of all things. He's only seen three more beyond that. Hear us set fresh eyes and opinions on a beloved classic. If we were a rich man, we would still do a movie podcast. We love movies that much.
The Boyz have spent many a ‘Hard Days Night' over these last few years in Homan Studio “A” pontificating on all manner of subjects, which have produced a stockpile of recordings. Not everything makes the grade for release to the world. Only those recordings that tickle-the-entire-team in the studio are produced into a Hamlin Avenue Boyz Album of tracks. No matter the weather, most often The Boyz arrive late in the evening parking in the darkened alley behind the studio. They come ready to enjoy each other's company, the company of the studio staff and with an almost ‘ceremonial' approach - the entire team will imbibe in some select herb. Only then do they signal the engineer with a ‘thumbs up' to hit the record button and capture the come-what-may moments with the help of the always dependable studio staff of support. This scene continues sometimes through the night. On this particular late-night, along with the many other unusual subjects of discussion, the Boyz got on a tangent that was quite surprising to say the least. As an example - ‘Dirty Feet'. That's right we did just say that. Anything and everything related to da feet. Who knew there was so much to say. Who knew the younger generation generally doesn't like the idea of feet or looking at them. At all. Who knew there was a solid reason for so much feet washing in biblical times. Feet had to have been real freakin dirty back then right? And who knew Vince does not want anyone touching his feet. “Nobody”! To quote an iconic audio artist from the past, Biggie Smalls (Notorious B.I.G.) “And If you don't know. Now you know….” So, enjoy you some ‘Dirty Feet'. As always, thank you for pointing your ears in this direction now and then and for all your communications to the show. And we do mean ‘all'. We encourage you (if the feeling arises) to send the Boyz your comments, questions, or hypotheticals. Synopsis As the season begins, we offer you this “Autumn Music” — a woodwind quintet by American composer Jennifer Higdon. Higdon says she wanted to write a companion piece to another famous woodwind quintet titled “Summer Music” by Samuel Barber. Higdon's “Autumn Music” was commissioned by Pi Kappa Lambda, the national music honorary society, and premiered at their 1994 national convention in Pittsburgh. “Autumn Music,” says Higdon, “is a sonic picture of the season of brilliant colors. The music of the first part represents the explosion of leaves and the crispness of the air of fall. As the music progresses, it becomes more spare and introspective, moving into a more melancholy and resigned feeling.” Jennifer Higdon was born in Brooklyn in 1962, and teaches at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Her chamber and orchestral pieces have been performed by ensembles coast to coast. She's also active as a performer and, as she explains, as an enthusiastic member of the audience: “I love exploring new works — my own pieces and the music of others — in a general audience setting, just to feel a communal reaction to new sounds. Music speaks to all age levels and all kinds of experiences in our lives. I think it can express anything and everything.” Music Played in Today's Program Jennifer Higdon (b. 1962): Autumn Music –Moran Woodwind Quintet (Crystal 754) On This Day Births 1875 - Lithuanian composer Mikolajus Ciurlionis, in Varena (then the Kaunas province of the Russian Empire; Julian date: Sept. 10); 1933 - Spanish composer Leonardo Balada, in Barcelona; 1961 - American composer Michael Torke, in Milwaukee, Wisc.; Deaths 1989 - American song composer Irving Berlin, age 101, in New York City; Premieres 1869 - Wagner: opera, "Das Rheingold," in Munich at the Hoftheater, Franz Wüllner conducting; The opera was performed at the Bavarian emperor Ludwig II's request, but against the composer's wishes; 1938 - Webern: String Quartet, Op. 28, at South Mountain, Pittsfield, Mass., during the Berkshire Chamber Music Festival; This work was commissioned for $750 by the American music patron, Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge; 1964 - Jerry Bock: musical "Fiddler On the Roof" opens on Broadway: It would run for 3,242 performances before closing; 1971 - Barber: "The Lovers" for solo voice and chorus (after a poem by Pablo Neruda), in Philadelphia; 1989 - Bernstein: "Arias and Barcarolles" (orchestrated version prepared by Bright Sheng), at the Tilles Center of Long Island University with the New York Chamber Symphony conducted by Gerard Schwarz and featuring vocalists Susan Graham and Kurt Ollmann; The first version of this work, for soloists and piano four-hands, premiered on May 9, 1988, at Equitable Center Auditorium in New York City; 1990 - James MacMillan: "The Beserking" (Piano Concerto), at Henry Wood Hall in Glasgow by pianist Peter Donohoue and the Royal Scottish Orchestra, Matthias Bamert conducting; 1990 - Christopher Rouse: "Jagannath" for orchestra, by the Houston Symphony Orchestra, Christoph Eschenbach conducting; 2000 - Philip Glass: “Tirol Concerto” for piano and orchestra, by Dennis Russell Davies (piano and conductor) with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, at the 7th annual Klangspuren Festival in Schwaz, Tirol (Austria); 2000 - Zwilich: "Millennium Fantasy" for piano and orchestra, by the Cincinnati Symphony, Jesús Lopez-Cobos conducting with soloist Jeffrey Biegel; Others 1937 - During the Spanish Civil War, Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas conducts his 1935 composition “Homage to Federico Garcia Lorca” in Madrid while the city was under siege by Spanish fascist forces; The Spanish poet Lorca had been killed by the Falangists; Links and Resources On Jennifer Higdon On Barber's "Summer Music"
Studying the Song - Audition & Music Preparation for Musical Theatre
Hey friends, in today's episode we are talking repertoire suggestions from the rarely done (yet Pulitzer prize winning) musical, Fiorello! (1959). From the writing team of Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick (also Fiddler on the Roof and She Loves Me), this Golden Age show has a score that alternates between brassy, energetic uptempo numbers and string-driven bittersweet ballads. Throughout all the songs, there is wit, humor, and emotional depth, and totally relatable POLITICAL COMMENTARY! I'll share the specific songs that you can pull out for audition material and cabaret shows as well as the ensemble numbers you can use with your college and high school students. I hope this helps you find some Golden Age material that feels fresh and not overdone! FIDDLER ON THE ROOF COMPOSER: Jerry Bock LYRICIST: Sheldon Harnick BOOK: Joseph Stein SOURCE: Sholem Aleichem's short stories Tevye the Dairyman (1894) DIRECTOR: Jerome Robbins CHOREOGRAPHER: Jerome Robbins PRINCIPLE CAST: Maria Karnilova (Golde), Joanna Merlin (Tzeitel), Zero Mostel (Tevye), OPENING DATE: Sep 22, 1964 CLOSING DATE: Jul 02, 1972 PERFORMANCES: 3,242 SYNOPSIS: Tevye, the local milkman, has five daughters that must enter into arranged marriages as dictated by the traditions of his culture. When Tzeitel, his eldest, chooses to make her own match, Tevye's world is turned upside down and traditions become vulnerable. After acclaimed musical successes commissioned by producers, Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock set out to write a musical which was of personal, familial interest to them. Based on a series of short stories by Sholem Alecheim, Fiddler on the Roof explores the importance of Jewish traditions to the inhabitants of a small, Russian village. Beth Burrier summarizes the complex identities of Jewish-American theatre artists working on Broadway, many of whom were attacked by the House Un-American Activities Committee or faced other forms of antisemitic discrimination in their lives. Although a liberal wave saw an onslaught of Jewish-American stories on Broadway, Fiddler on the Roof was deemed risky by producers because its characters were Russian villagers, not Americans. Upon opening with a seismic performance by the blacklisted Zero Mostel, and despite a pleased general public, Yiddish writers took issue with the liberal message of the show. Work by director/ choreographer Jerome Robbins posited the piece as a new sort of musical, where the authors took a back seat to the vision of the director. Beth Burrier is head of musical theatre at Manhattanville College in Purchase New York, and a principal conductor and the Associate Artistic Director of the College Light Opera Company in Falmouth, Massachusetts. She holds a Master of Music summa cum laude from Ithaca College, and a Bachelor of Music Education summa cum laude with honors from Otterbein University. Beth has been on the faculty at Baldwin Wallace and Penn State, and has taught Music Theatre History, Music Theory, Acting the Song, Audition Technique, Voice and Piano. National tours include RENT, The Full Monty, and Beehive the Sixties Musical. Sus siguientes musicales fueron “TENDERLOIN” (1960), “MAN IN THE MOON” (1963), “SHE LOVES ME” (1963), “EL VIOLINISTA EN EL TEJADO” (1964), “THE APPLE TREE” (1967), “THE CANTERVILLE GHOST” (1966), “TRAFALGAR” basado en los últimos años del almirante Nelson y “THE ROTHSCHILDS” (1970). 00h 00’00” Presentación 00h 03’13” Cabecera 00h 03’50” 1958 THE BODY BEAUTIFUL 00h 03’50” Just my luck 00h 06’15” Summer is 00h 08’30” 1959 FIORELLO 00h 08’30” Overture 00h 12’21” Politics and poker 00h 16’16” The name’s Laguardia 00h 19’31” Til tomorrow 00h 23’01” When did I fall in love 00h 26’20” Little tin box 00h 29’55” The very next man 00h 33’16” 1960 TENDERLOIN 00h 33’16” Bless this land 00h 34’10” Little old New York 00h 36’55” How the money change hands 00h 40’26” The picture of happiness 00h 44’02” 1963 SHE LOVES ME 00h 44’02” Good morning, good day 00h 47’07” No more candy 00h 48’34” Tonight at eight 00h 50’25” Will he like me? 00h 52’57” Ilona 00h 56’18” Dear friend 00h 59’14” Ice cream 01h 02’21” She loves me 01h 05’11” Twelve days to Christmas 01h 08’46” 1964 FIDDLER ON THE ROOF 01h 08’46” Tradition 01h 15’47” If I were a rich man 01h 20’23” To life 01h 25’54” Wedding procession 01h 27’36” Sunrise, sunset 01h 30’57” Wedding dance 01h 36’10” Chavaleh – Teyve’s denial 01h 39’47” 1966 THE CANTERVILLE GHOST 01h 39’47” I worry if you never try 01h 42’53” 1967 THE APPLE TREE 01h 42’53” Feelings 01h 44’14” Eve 01h 47’20” Friends 01h 49’23” The apple tree forbidden fruit 01h 51’57” What makes me love him? 01h 54’36” Forbidden love in Gaul 01h 56’25” Make way – Which door – I’ll tell you a truth 01h 59’57” Oh, to be a movie star 02h 04’01” 1970 THE ROTHSCHILDS 02h 04’01” Pleasure and privilege 02h 06’54” Sons 02h 13’29” Everything 02h 17’37” Entr’act 1 & 2 02h 19’30” I’m in love 02h 21’05” The will
00h 00'00" Si yo fuera rico - Nuestro pequeño mundo 00h 03'15" Presentación 00h 04'44" Cabecera 00h 05'53" Inicio 00h 07'05" Prologo, Tradition & Main theme 00h 19'20" Matchmaker, matchmaker 00h 24'06" If I were a rich man 00h 30'51" Sabbath prayer 00h 34'11" To life 00h 42'09" Teyve's monologue 00h 45'21" Miracle of miracles 00h 48'10" Teyve's dream 00h 55'21" Wedding procession 00h 57'08" Sunrise, sunset 01h 01'13" The wedding dance 01h 07'43" End first act & Entr'acte 01h 11'24" Now I have everything 01h 14'11" Teyve's rebuttal 01h 17'55" Do you love me? 01h 21'52" The rumor 01h 24'11" Far from the home I love 01h 27'55" Dear sewing machine 01h 30'48" Chava ballet sequence 01h 33'31" The rejection scene 01h 35'32" Anatevka 01h 39'30" Leaving Anatevka 01h 41'36" Finale 01h 42'06" Curiosidades 01h 43'20" Topsy turvy 01h 47'16" Any day now 01h 50’51” We’ve never missed a sabbath yet 01h 55’18” What a life 01h 57’43” To marry for love 02h 01’30” Richest man in town 02h 04’32” If I were a woman 02h 07’00” As much as that 02h 09’52” A butchers soul 02h 11’44” Letters from America 02h 16’05” Get thee out 02h 17’32” When Messiah comes 02h 20'17" Agradecimientos 02h 21'07" Excerpts, variations & cadenza

#693 - David Krakauer The David Krakauer Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. It's The Paul Leslie Hour! This episode features an interview with clarinetist and recording artist David Krakauer. It is not often an album is so instantly alluring as David Krakauer's “The Big Picture.” David Krakaeur is a clarinetist extraordinaire and “The Big Picture” is his renditions of 12 songs from major movies throughout the years…and what a collection it is! At the forefront is the clarinet, but what makes this record so great is how innovative Krakauer is at interpreting the songs. Perhaps the most represented are songs from Woody Allen films: “Si Tu Vois Ma Mère” composed by Sidney Bechet which appeared in Midnight in Paris among others. Variety is key here. There's Krakauer's cover of “People,” made famous by Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl, flawlessly followed by the Sheldon Harnick & Jerry Bock song “Tradition” from Fiddler on the Roof. All it took was listening to “The Big Picture” once and Paul knew Krakauer was an artist he had to speak to. We hope you enjoy their heart-to-heart interview. Just remember, we need your support. Fiddler on the Roof, the musical, was first produced on Broadway in 1964 -- with music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and book by Joseph Stein (who also wrote Zorba). It is based on the story Tevye and his Daughters (or Tevye the Dairyman) and other tales, published in 1894 by Sholem Aleichem, whose real name was Solomon Naumovich Rabinovich. From Wikipedia: “Sholem Aleichem died in New York on May 13, 1916 from tuberculosis and diabetes, aged 57, while working on his last novel, Motl, Peysi the Cantor's Son, and was buried at Old Mount Carmel cemetery in Queens. At the time, his funeral was one of the largest in New York City history, with an estimated 100,000 mourners. The next day, his will was printed in the New York Times and was read into the Congressional Record of the United States.” In his will, Sholem Aleichem writes that he wished to be buried “not among aristocrats or the powerful, but among plain Jewish laborers, among the very people itself….” (New York Times, Wednesday, May 17, 1916)
391 - Sheldon Harnick On this particular sojourn, we welcome one of the renowned lyricists in musical theatre, Sheldon Harnick. Originally from Chicago he is regarded and revered as a legendary songwriter. A lot of his most beloved work he cowrote with composer Jerry Bock. Possibly the most beloved and famous musical he worked on would be Fiddler on the Roof, which debuted on Broadway in 1964. "Fiddler on the Roof" was the first run in theatre history to go more than 3,000 performances. He has written with some of the greatest composers ever, not just Jerry Bock, but also Richard Rodgers, Joe Raposo and Michel Legrand. Some of Harnick's other musicals you may know of would include Fiorello, She Loves Me, Tenderloin. For those who are interested, there have been recordings of him singing his songs. The Kingston Trio, Sarah Brightman. Join us as we venture Into the mind of a lyrical genius, right here on The Paul Leslie Hour. "Without our traditions, our lives would be as shaky as a fiddler on the roof", siger mælkemanden Tevye, der med mange udfordringer forsøger at holde sammen på tilværelsen i det lille jødiske samfund i landsbyen Anatevka.
Stewart Clarke stars in Trevor Nunn’s new production of Fiddler on the Roof, playing Perchik the student revolutionary who falls for Tevye’s second daughter Hodl. As the much-loved musical about the poor Jewish milkman, his wife and five daughters by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick readies to open at London’s Menier Chocolate Factory*, Stewart sits down with JR’s arts editor Judi Herman. The pair discuss tradition and revolution, Anatevka and Siberia, and the resonance of the story of Tevye and his family that has touched hearts and minds worldwide.Fiddler On the Roof runs Friday 23 November – Saturday 9 March 2019. 8pm (Tue-Sat), 3.30pm (Sat & Sun). £45-£49.50, £39.50 concs. Is listening to "No Script" your Monday "Traaaaaadition"? If not, this is a good Monday to cement that weekly pattern. Jackson and Jacob talk about one of the defining plays in musical theatre - Fiddler on the Roof. Revivals of this charming script continue to pop up, and it's a pretty good guess that someone (maybe a high school, maybe a community theatre) is producing Fiddler within 50 miles of you. It's popular; it's wonderful. On this week's episode, J&J talk about Russian history, prayer, and, of course, tradition. ------------------------------ We had so much fun talking about this play, and we’d love to keep the conversation going! After watching an early copy of the forthcoming documentary Bathtubs Over Broadway, Alec became fascinated by the film's quietly hilarious hero, Steve Young. As part of his job as a writer for the David Letterman Show, Steve had to scour secondhand stores for kooky music Dave would play on-air. That's how he first came across recordings of industrial musicals, a genre of theater largely unknown to anyone who didn't attend a sales conference in the 60s or 70s. An "industrial" was a fully staged production commissioned by a large company and performed solely for its salesmen, executives, or distributors. Some starred top-flight Broadway talent and were written by legendary teams like Chicago's Kander and Ebb (Go Fly a Kite for GE, 1966) or Fiddler on the Roof's Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick (Ford-i-fy Your Future, 1959). But many performers and composers made their living primarily doing industrials. Steve Young has dedicated his post-Letterman life to preserving what recordings remain, and to shining light and love on the artists behind these ephemeral creations. Alec and Steve dive into songs like "My Bathroom," and into the psychology of someone who would dedicate his life to saving them from obscurity. Plus they talk Letterman, and Young's own path from blue-collar New England, to Harvard, to the top of the comedy-writing heap.

This week on Unorthodox, we’re filling up on chametz before Passover starts. We talk to bagel makers from Montreal to Australia (and Cleveland!), get the scoop on the bagel scene in Israel, and find out how bagels became the unofficial food of the Jews. Our guests span the globe, but have one thing in common: they love bagels. We talk to Ben Pigette, a lieutenant in the Royal Australian Navy who taught himself how to make bagels to impress his Jewish girlfriend. Geoff Hardman, co-founder of the Cleveland Bagel Company, tells us how he and his neighbor Dan Herbst decided to start making bagels despite having zero baking experience—and how their chewy-on-the-inside, crisp-on-the-outside creations are putting Cleveland on the bagel tourism map. Tel Aviv-based Tablet contributor Dana Kessler fills us in on the beigale scene in Israel: American bagels, Romanian bagels, Jerusalem bagels, and more. Vince Morena calls in from the famed St. Viateur Bagel in Montreal to describe (and defend) Montreal-style bagels. He also tells us how his Italian father was hired as a teenager by Myer Lewkowicz, the Holocaust survivor who founded the shop in 1957, and ended up learning Yiddish and taking over the business when Lewkowicz died. Shannon Sarna, editor of The Nosher and author of the forthcoming cookbook Modern Jewish Baker: Challah, Babka, Bagels & More, tells us how bagels came to be such strong cultural markers of Judaism, and the newfangled bagel trend she can’t get on board with. And a special low-carb treat: Rabbi Moshe Rosenberg, who just published The (Unofficial) Hogwarts Haggadah, explains why Harry Potter is such a good language for teaching his students about Judaism. The beloved 1964 musical "Fiddler on the Roof," with its book by Joseph Stein and score by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, is back on Broadway this season. Based on writer Sholem Aleichem's Yiddish tales of Tevye the milkman, this new production of "Fiddler" is the show's fifth return to the Great White Way. The role of Tevye was originated by Zero Mostel, played on stage and film by Chaim Topol, and on Broadway by Herschel Bernardi, Theodore Bikel, Leonard Nimoy and Harvey Fierstein, among others. In this production, five-time Tony Award nominee Danny Burstein has the role, and the director is Bartlett Sher, acclaimed for his Rodgers and Hammerstein revivals on Broadway. But do we really need yet another "Fiddler on the Roof?" New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood explains why we just might. "Fiddler on the Roof" runs through July 3 at the Broadway Theatre.
