The game has been called “a model of decorum and tranquility”, and “religion plus finesse”, both quotes from Tim Rice, Benny Andersson, and Bjorn Ulvaeus' musical “Chess”.So we talk about both. From the opening moves in Merano, Italy, to the Endgame in Bangkok, we find the game and the musical both mysterious and intriguing.Today's root beer is Hosmer Mountain.Intro and Outro music by Stockmusic331 on Pond5Send us a text
Note: We want to be clear that this episode does include material that has been generated by Financial Times journalists using AI tools...we've done it to illustrate just how much AI is influencing the music industry.-------AI has arrived in the music world, and the industry is being forced to wrangle with it. The technology is now sophisticated enough to create entirely new deepfake songs. This year, millions of fake covers, and songs that clone the voices of musical artists, have appeared online. The FT's pop critic Ludo Hunter-Tilney has fallen down a wormhole to make sense of how these programs work. He actually made a song of his own, an original fake song in the style of Tom Waits. From an early age Tim Rice was a pop music fanatic. He began his professional life as a trainee solicitor. While still an apprenticed clerk Tim approached the head of Arlington Books, Desmond Elliot, with the idea of writing a book about pop history. The idea didn't impress Elliot, but the fact that Tim was also a budding song-writer did. Elliot knew someone in need of a collaborator: a young man called Andrew Lloyd Webber, who wanted to be a composer. At Elliot's suggestion, Tim wrote to Andrew, and a meeting was quickly arranged. The two men hit it off immediately, and, owing to Andrew's love of American musical theatre, began to try to write a musical rather than pop singles. And so this story begins. Tim Rice continued to work with Andrew Lloyd Webber, giving us visceral and intelligent musical theatre fare that includes Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. The pair also share the unique accolade of writing a song for Elvis Presley; “It's Easy for You”. The song is also remarkable in that it is the last song on the last album released during Elvis' lifetime. Subsequent collaborations have been with fellow titans of the craft - Elton John, Alan Menken, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson creating popular theatrical fare that includes Chess, The Lion King, Aladdin and Aida. His output has been presented by the Disney Organisation, on Broadway, in The West End and for commercial stages around the globe. The popularity of his works with community and school theatres has ensured that at any time, somewhere in the world, a Tim Rice musical is being produced. This year in Australia alone we have seen commercial productions of Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat and Beauty & the Beast. Tim is the recipient of 3 Academy Awards, 4 Tonys, 5 Grammys and 1 Emmy - making him that ‘rare bird' in the entertainment industry - one of only 17 artists to have garnered an EGOT. He was knighted by Elizabeth 2nd for services to music in 1994. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, is an inductee to the Songwriter's Hall of Fame, a Disney Legend Recipient, a fellow of the British Academy of Songwriters, and has his own Cricket team. With Andrew Lloyd Webber he wrote a musical for Queen Elizabeth titled Cricket, and has crafted songs for Freddy Mercury, Placido Domingo and David Essex.Tim Rice has contributed songs to soundtracks, such as “All Time High” for the Bond movie Octopussy. His most recent musical work, From Here To Eternity opened in 2013. He is the co-author of the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles and a co-founder of Pavilion Books. And today, celebrates 400 episodes of the STAGES podcast. The STAGES podcast is available to access and subscribe from Spotify and Apple podcasts. 00h 00’00” Skördefest 00h 01’36” Presentación 00h 04’19” Cabecera 00h 05’22” Inicio 00h 06’03” Overtura 00h 10’13” Paths of leaves and needles 00h 12’01” Where you go I go with you 00h 18’03” Stone King 00h 21’08” Down to the sea 00h 25’32” Bad harvest 00h 32’53” No 00h 38’11” He’s our pilot 00h 40’16” Never 00h 46’14” Golden wheatfields 00h 48’32” All who are grieving 00h 52’31” We open up the gateways 00h 56’47” Peasants at sea 01h 01’14” Lice 01h 06’32” In the dead of darkness 01h 10’35” A Sunday in Battery Park 01h 15’30” Home 01h 19’34” American man 01h 24’31” Dreams of gold 01h 28’20” Summer rose 01h 32’59” Emperors and Kings 01h 37’16” Twilight images calling 01h 43’54” Queen of the praire 01h 50’02” Wild grass 01h 56’30” Gold can turn to sand 02h 03’43” Wildcat money 02h 07’59” A miracle of God 02h 12’30” Down to the waterside 02h 14’50” Miscarriage 02h 16’41” You have to been there 02h 23’13” Here I am again 02h 30’17” With child again 02h 33’00” Rising from myth and legend 02h 36’02” I’ll be waiting there 02h 42’41” Curiosidades y anécdotas 02h 44’20” Aldrid
Welcome to the middle of the second British Invasion! John Howard Jones was born in Southampton, in southern England to Welsh parents. He grew up in Wales, moved to Canada when he was a teenager, and returned to the UK in the mid 70's where he attended the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. The was the oldest of four boys, all of which became musicians, and started piano at the age of 7. Dream Into Action is Howard Jones' second studio album, and was released in this month. It went to number 10 on the Billboard 200, and number 2 on the UK albums chart. Rupert Hine was the producer, who also produced albums for Rush. Howard's brother Martin Jones plays bass on this album, and he has the group Afrodiziak as backing vocals on a number of tracks. Jones had a successful debut release in 1984 called "Human Lib," and "Dream Into Action" would be an even bigger hit. Howard Jones has a piano and keyboards-driven sound, and his lyrics are quite positive. Jones believes that his positivity and depth tends to create a negative perception in the media, stating that "what's 'cool' is often very shallow and transient." Jones is still putting out albums today. He released an album called Transform in 2019, and one called Dialogue in 20222.Bruce brings this synth-heavy 80's album to the podcast. Like to Get to Know You WellThis track preceded the album by over six months. It came out as a single in August of 1984 as the Summer Olympics were kicking off in Los Angeles, and was dedicated to "the original spirit of the Olympic Games." It was included in a remix album called "the 12" Album" in November 1984 before being included in this studio album.Assault and BatteryThis is a deeper cut which was played on an episode of Miami Vice. The lyrics are about the horrors of eating meat - Jones was a vegetarian at the time, and is a vegan today. This songs reminds us of Styx and Elton John with the keyboard work. Life In One DayThe third single from the album (or fourth, depending upon how you count "Like to Get to Know You Well") went to number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100. The lyrics are about not rushing through life, but taking time to enjoy the place where you are. The British vocal group Afrodiziak can be heard contributing backing vocals to this song. Things Can Only Get BetterThe first single from the album is the big hit. It went to number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Afrodiziak contributes backing vocals to this track as well. It is a very deliberately positive song, encouraging the listener who is down on his luck to keep going, and to keep looking for better days ahead. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme to the from the television series "Moonlighting" by Al JarreauBruce Willis launched his career in this detective romance comedy that starred Willis and Cybill Shepherd. STAFF PICKS:Don't Come Around Here No More by Tom Petty & the HeartbreakersRob features a song written by Tom Petty and Dave Stewart (from the Eurythmics). This was the main hit from the sixth studio album "Southern Accents." It is a break-up song partially inspired by a conversation Stewart overheard between Joe Walsh and Stevie Nicks. The Alice In Wonderland-themed video is a must-see.We Are the World by U.S.A. for AfricaLynch brings us the ultimate supergroup. This was a benefit single for victims of famine in Africa, and raised over $60 million. The song was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, and Quincey Jones produced it. Musicians appearing in the band were a veritable "who's who" in the music world, including performers as diverse as Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, Steve Perry, and Ray Charles.White Lies by Jason & the Scorchers Wayne's staff pick is off the group's first full length album, "Lost and Found." Jason & the Scorchers' high energy and country twang led them to be described as "cowpunk." The lyrics describe a couple in a bad relationship. "Take these chains and set me free, release me from this misery. Now, don't you waste my time with your alibis 'cause your heart can't hide what I see in your eyes."One Night in Bangkok by Murray HeadBruce goes to the theater for his staff pick. This song is from a concept album and musical called "Chess," written by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus (formerly of ABBA). The musical is about a Cold War-era chess tournament between two grandmasters, one American and one Soviet. Murray Head performs the spoken verse and Anders Glenmark sings the chorus. COMEDY TRACK:I'm Kissin' You Goodbye by Ray StevensWe finish up this week's podcast with a break-up song in a style only Ray Stevens can deliver.
Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Sir Tim Rice, Legendary Lyricist and EGOT Winner About Harvey's guest: Today's very special guest, Sir Tim Rice, is a man whose monumental contributions to the world of musical theatre can hardly be overstated. His collaborations with composer Andrew Lloyd Webber on the phenomenally successful and beloved shows, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat”, “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Evita”, brought him worldwide acclaim, as one of the greatest and most innovative lyricists of the modern age. He went on to co-write “Blondel” with Stephen Oliver, and “Chess”, with Benny Anderson and Bjorn Ulvaeus from ABBA. With Sir Elton John, he wrote “The Lion King”, “Aida”, and “The Road to El Dorado”. He collaborated with Alan Menken on “Aladdin”, “King David”, and the theatrical production AND live action re-make of “Beauty and the Beast”, which is the highest-grossing live action musical of all time. He co-wrote a musical called “Heathcliff”, based on Emily Bronte's “Wuthering Heights”, which produced a wonderful album featuring Sir Cliff Richard and the late Olivia Newton-John. And with composer Stuart Brayson, he co-wrote the musical production, “From Here to Eternity”, based on the 1953 James Jones novel. This man's list of accomplishments is nothing short of jaw-dropping. His shows have broken box office records in the West End, on Broadway, and around the world. Many of his songs have become global #1 hits, including “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “I Don't Know How to Love Him”, “Don't Cry for me Argentina”, “I Know Him So Well”, “Someday Out of the Blue” – and he even wrote the lyrics to my favourite song from a James Bond movie, “All Time High”, from “Octopussy”, recorded by Rita Coolidge. And speaking of #1 hits, he's won THREE Academy Awards and THREE Golden Globe Awards for his songs “A Whole New World” from “Aladdin”, “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from “The Lion King”, and “You Must Love Me”, from the 1996 movie, “Evita”. He received 2 more Oscar nominations for “Circle of Life” and “Hakuna Matata” from “The Lion King”. He's been nominated for 9 Tony Awards and won 3 – 2 for “Evita” and 1 for “Aida”. In fact, “Evita” was the 1st British musical to win the Tony award for Best Musical. He's been nominated for 12 Grammy awards, and won FIVE. And, in 2018, when he won an Emmy award for the live TV performance of “Jesus Christ Superstar”, he became an EGOT winner, one of only 18 people in the world to have won the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards. He's been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the American Theatre Hall of Fame. And in recognition of his work in film and theatre, he was inducted as a Disney Legend. He's received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And last but most certainly not least, in 1994 he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth the 2nd. This week we have an actual real life member of ABBA on Table Manners. Only a few days after we went to see Abba Voyage, the legend, Bjorn Ulvaeus came over to Clapham for lunch.Bjorn told us all about how the Abba Voyage show came to fruition and how he and his band mates were turned into avatars. We spoke about Abba's Eurovision win back in 1974 and what food they ate to celebrate!Whilst eating mum's delicious blackened chicken with caramelised clementine sauce, (thank you Yotam), Bjorn told us about his love of sweets, his mum's weekly fried pork & his introduction to Sashimi in Tokyo. If you ever wondered what Bjorn's karaoke song was… tune in! It's all in there. An absolute honour to host you Bjorn. If you haven't already, go and see Abba Voyage - it will NOT disappoint. X Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Not all megamusicals were big hits -- not on Broadway, at least. This episode, we look at one of the most infamous and enduring of the failed London to Broadway transfers: Chess. The score, by Time Rice, Benny Andersson, and Bjorn Ulvaeus, has endured, however, powered by such pop hits as "Nobody's Side." All clips are from the 1988 Original Broadway Cast Recording of Chess featuring Judy Kuhn and are used in accordance with the Fair Use Exemption for criticism and commentary. Buy the album on Amazon! MAMMA MIA COMPOSER: Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus LYRICIST: Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus BOOK: Catherine Johnson DIRECTOR: Phyllida Lloyd CHOREOGRAPHER: Anthony Van Laast PRINCIPLE CAST: Judy Kaye (Rosie), Karen Mason (Tanya), Louise Pitre (Donna) OPENING DATE: Oct 18, 2001 CLOSING DATE: Sep 12, 2015 PERFORMANCES: 5,758 SYNOPSIS: Sophie is about to be married and wants her father at the wedding except she doesn't know who that might be. Limiting it to three men that her mother knew intimately, she invites them all to her wedding to see if she can figure out which one is her real dad. Using the hits of Swedish pop group ABBA to tell a fictional story, Mamma Mia! was heralded as Broadway's first mega-hit jukebox musical. After the rocky reception of their first Broadway endeavor, Chess, band members Benny Andersson and Björn Alvaeus gave complete freedom to book writer Catherine Johnson, believing the plot of the musical was the key to its success, not the music. Upon opening, though the show was mocked by critics and ultimately overlooked by awards shows, the musical was a major commercial success. Malcolm Womack explores how its financial successes encouraged producers to mine the discographies of successful artists to guarantee Broadway hits with such musicals as All Shook Up, Lennon, Come Fly Away, and Movin' Out. Malcolm Womack is an Assistant Teaching Professor at the Penn State School of Theatre. He has been published in the academic journals Film & Theatre and the Journal of Popular Culture, and has contributed several entries to the African American National Biography. Malcolm has written about Mamma Mia! previously twice, providing an article for the journal Studies in Musical Theatre and a chapter for the edited collection Mamma Mia! The Movie: Exploring a Cultural Phenomenon. He received his doctorate from the University of Washington with a dissertation on Harlem's Cotton Club. We all have an idea on what it takes to get the music process from creation to consumption. The path taken has changed dramatically and historically over the past 20 years or so. At the same time, the one thing that has remained constant is that people love to create, and people love to listen. With all the new technology and ways to distribute music, how does the creative person, while rising above the clutter of all the releases out in the world, ensure that you get properly compensated for your work? The consumer end of things have stabilized to a point where the listener can find your music, but at the same time, can the money trail find you as the official owner and registrant of your material? What if you're a co-writer on a song? Do you know the legal name(s) of the other writers on your song? Do you have the proper metadata to ensure that your songs are registered properly? There are 5 identifiers which control who's doing what when it comes to registering your song, and these are used worldwide. Niclas Molinder and his partners have created a new company called “Session” which can help simplify the process for you, and code your creative content with those five identifiers that will help smooth the revenue stream for you. Niclas Molinder is an award-winning songwriter, music producer and musician who also leads several organizations focused on transforming the music industry's management of data and rights for the benefit of creators. After 20 years of songwriting and producing for artists such as Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Mary J Blige and The Jonas Brothers, as well as running his own publishing company RedFly Music – the Swedish entrepreneur has become the figurehead for pioneering solutions for the massive value gap in the music industry. In 2019, Niclas Molinder partnered with Bjorn Ulvaeus (of ABBA fame) and Max Martin to found Session, the world's first independent global hub for authoritative music metadata sourced from creators, built to ensure creators get the credit they deserve. Molinder's vision is to bring the global music industry and technologists together to create a standard for how music creators and their representatives are identified in their contribution to songs - so everyone can get credited and correctly compensated when their music is used. In 2016, Niclas also founded Music Rights Awareness Foundation, an apolitical foundation that works to provide an educational solution to the value gap in industry, by increasing knowledge of music rights worldwide, adjusted to the future industry. www.session.id The Business Side of Music ™ © 2022 Lotta Dogs Productions LLC Showrunner and Executive Producer Emeritus: Tom Sabella Producer and Host (the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Co-Producer - Audio/Video Editor (the man behind the curtain): Mark Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Marketing and Social Media (all knowing): Sarah Fleshner for 362 Entertainment All Around Problem Solver (and Mental Health Therapist for us): Connie Ribas Recorded inside an old beat up Airstream Trailer located somewhere on what's left of Music Row in Nashville TN (except during pandemics, then it's pretty much been accomplished VIA Zoom or over the phone, with the exception for those fearless enough to come to Bob Bender's dining room… and there have been a few that have survived). 00h 00'00" Inicio 00h 01'06" Cabecera 00h 01'44" ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER 00h 03'58" Close every door - Philip Schoffield 00h 06'56" Any dream will do - Jason Donovan 00h 10'43" Heaven on their minds - Josh Young 00h 14'23" I don't know how to love him - Yvonne Elliman & Ian Gillan 00h 18'30" Gethsemane - Ian Gillan 00h 24'02" Oh what a circus - David Essex 00h 27'47" Another suitcase in another hall - Barbara Dickson 00h 30'45" Don't cry for me, Argentina - Elaine Paige 00h 36'32" BLONDEL y CHESS 00h 37'05" The least of my troubles - Paul Nicholas 00h 40'59" Running back for more - Elaine Paige 00h 44'06" One night in Bangkok - Murray Head 00h 49'02· I know him so well - Elaine Paige & Barbara Dickson 00h 53'12" Someone else's story - Elaine Paige 00h 56'53" CRICKET y HEATHCLIFF 00h 58'19" The summer game - The London Quartet 01h 01'47" A misunderstood man - Cliff Richard 01h 06'16" Had to be - Cliff Richard & Olivia Newton John 01h 10'23" Be with me always - Cliff Richard & Olivia Newton John 01h 15'25" THE LION KING y KING DAVID 01h 16'52" Circle of life - Carmen Twilie 01h 20'47" Hakuna Matata - Nathan Lane y Ernie Sabella 01h 24'49" Can you feel the love tonight - Elton John 01h 28'45" Sheer perfection - Marcus Lovett & Judy Khun 01h 33'03" Saul has stain his thousands - Stephen Bogardus & Chorus 01h 36'41" This new Jerusalem - Marcus Lovett & Anbthony Galde 01h 40'54" MÁS ELTON JOHN 01h 41'37" Every story is a love story - Sherie Rene Scott 01h 44'57" Fortune favors the brave - Adam Pascal & Cast 01h 47'10" Elaborate lives - Adam Pascal & Heather Headley 01h 51'29" Written in the stars - Adam Pascal & Heather Headley 01h 55'37" The panic in me - Elton John 02h 01'02" It's thought to be a God - Elton John & Randy Newman 02h 04'44" My heart dances - Elton John 02h 09'29" PRINCIPIO Y FINAL 02h 10'36" A man on his own - Adam Brazier 02h 14'50" Going, going, gone - Tim Rice 02h 19'15" G Company Blues - Ensemble 02h 22'39" Fight the fight - Robert Londsdale & Ensemble 02h 25'08" More than America - Darius Campbell & Rebecca Thornhill

00h o5'58" Come back Richard, your country needs you - Tim Rice 00h 08'54" Down thru summer - Ross Hannaman 00h 11'46" Goodbye Seattle - Paul Raven 00h 14'40" I’ll give all my love to Southend - Ross Hannaman 00h 16'36" Try it and see - Rita Pavone 00h 19'27" COMPONIENDO PARA CANTANTES DETERMINADOS 00h 20'05" A winter’s tale - David Essex 00h 24'13" Disillusion me - Gary Bond 00h 27'30" Magdalena - Tony Christie 00h 30'53" What a line to go out on - Yvonne Elliman 00h 34'21" Dance the dance - Connie Fisher 00h 38'24" It's easy for you - Elvis Presley 00h 41'48" ESCRIBIENDO PARA ELAINE PAIGE 00h 42'14" Falling down to Earth (Mike Batt) 00h 46'17" The last one to leave (Florrie Palmer) 00h 48'58" Hot as sun (Paul McCartney) 00h 52'10" The second time (Francis Lai) 00h 56'12" Missing (Vangelis) 00h 59'54" All things considered" (Vangelis) 01h 03'32" CANCIONES PARA EL CINE 01h 04'16" All time high (Octopussy) - Rita Coolidge 01h 07'10" A Christmas dream (Odessa) - Maynard Williams 01h 10'01" Finally (Gumshoe) - Pamela Paterson 01h 13'49" ELTON JOHN, FREDDIE MERCURY Y RICK WAKEMAN 01h 14'25" The falling priest - Freddie Mercury & Monserrat Caballé 01h 20'07" The Golden boy - Freddie Mercury & Monserrat Caballé 01h 26'06" Legal boys - Elton John 01h 29'10" Julia - Chaka Khan 01h 33'45" STARMANIA (TYCOON) 01h 34'12" Only the very best - Peter Kingsbery 01h 37'43" Ziggy - Celine Dion 01h 40'38" ALAN MENKEN Y DISNEY 01h 42'24" A whole new world - Brad Kane & Lea Salonga 01h 45'01" One jump ahead - Brad Kane 01h 47'21" Home - Susan Egan 01h 51'05" No matter what - Tom Bosley & Susan Egan 01h 54'08" If I can’t love her - Terrence Mann 01h 58'07" A change in me - Susan Egan 02h 01'51" How does a moment last forever - Celine Dion 02h 05'22" Evermore - Josh Groban 02h 08'27" WIZARD FROM OZ 02h 09'27" Already home - Danielle Hope 02h 12'44" Nobody understand me - Danielle Hope & Cast 02h 16'27" Red shoes blues - Hannah Waddingham 02h 18'35" Wonders of the world - Michael Crawford

Cold war chess matches and show tunes collide in "One Night in Bangkok" by Murray Head. The song went to number one in many countries and topped out at #3 in May 1985 in the U.S. and Canada. The song was a single from the concept album “Chess” by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus of ABBA (and Mama Mia fame) with lyrics by Tim Rice. It later became a musical, starring Murray Head. In the musical, Head plays “Freddie Trumper,” an American Chess master who is in Thailand to face off against his opponent from the USSR in a big chess match. If that sounds familiar, it's because it was inspired by the 1972 Bobby Fischer/Boris Spassky match in Reykjavik. In the song, Trumper is trying to stay focused on the match and not succumb to Bangkok's many distractions. Listening to it with 2021 ears, it's hard to miss the transphobic overtones or the way it hypersexualizes Asian women. If you were transfixed by the flute solo, you may have missed all that in 1985, but the Thai government didn't. Check out the video.Note, this song is not to be confused with Musical Chess by Burger King Illuminati. Like the show? This week I had the pleasure of sitting down with Musician/Composer Rob Preuss. Rob has had an incredibly diverse career and believes that part of the reason is due to his sense of curiosity and absolute love for all genres of music. Whether he was talking about his time spent as a keyboard player in the band ‘Spoons’ or Honeymoon Suite or teaching the vocal track to a new member of the cast of Mamma Mia, he seemed to always find something that about the experience that satisfied his passion and also made him want to dig deeper into his love of music. In this episode: what has enabled him to change genres and take on different roles in his music career Why it is important to look at every creative endeavor as a novice What he does when he is feeling uninspired or stuck Why listening is the most important skill he continues to embrace as an artist, How to follow your curiosity and not fear failure A little about Rob: Rob is a musician/composer. He’s worked professionally in the recorded/live music business since he was 15 years old and has written, recorded, produced, conducted, rehearsed, played, bought, listened, loved, and learned music all of his life. Rob has worked alongside performers, producers, managers, accountants, agents, record company staff for decades. He started playing classical piano at age 5 and joined his first rock band at age 10, and had some top 10 records in Canada with his band ‘Spoons' when he was 16-19 years old. They recorded their first album when he was 15, with Daniel Lanois, at his studio in Hamilton Ontario. With the band he recorded with other producers such as Nile Rodgers, toured and did shows with The Police, Culture Club, Simple Minds to name a few. ‘Spoons’ were on Quality/A&M Records in Canada, and Jordan Harris signed us to A&M US. Rob has also played in a Warner Bros. band called ‘Honeymoon Suite’ who was produced by Ted Templeman and recorded the title song for the first ‘Lethal Weapon' film in '87. Honeymoon Suite went on to Tour the world and did shows with Journey, Status Quo, Starship. Rob has done music for corporate jingles, television/online spots, and many recording sessions for a variety of musical situations. In 1989 he also began working in Musical Theatre, in Toronto, playing many different shows, including Tommy, Miss Saigon, Beauty & the Beast, and Phantom of the Opera. In 2000 Rob had the opportunity to work on Mamma Mia!, in Toronto, as Associate Musical Director, working with Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus from ABBA, along with the whole British creative team, to help create the international production of the show. It's been successful, to say the least! He made his way to NYC in 2001 with the show and was Associate Music Director on Broadway until September 2015. From 2011-13 he was Associate Music Supervisor for ONCE the Musical, off- and on Broadway, and we recorded the Grammy-winning cast album, produced by Steve Epstein. He studied composition in Germany with the composer Karlheinz Stockhausen, in 2007, a few months before he passed away. “I'm always discovering great new music, in every genre, and I'm probably the most open-minded person I know when it comes to music!” Instagram: @robpreuss

Bjorn Ulvaeus from ABBA tells Anne McElvoy, our senior editor, about the melancholy beneath the exuberant voices and his musical influences. Would he write the same songs in the #MeToo era and which song has had its lyrics changed for a different feminist time? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This week Sue Lawley's castaway is the journalist and songwriter Herbert Kretzmer. Born in South Africa in 1925, he came to Europe after World War II. For a while he lived in Paris, playing piano in a bar. He rubbed shoulders with Jean Paul Sartre and became friends with one of France's greatest singer-songwriters Charles Aznavour. The two formed a musical partnership and Kretzmer re-worked many of his songs into English - including the hits Yesterday, When I Was Young and She, which was more recently recorded by Elvis Costello for the film Notting Hill. His day job was as a journalist and Kretzmer wrote celebrity profiles for the Daily Express. He says his most memorable interviewees were "writers and fighters", including George Foreman, Muhammad Ali, Truman Capote and Arthur Miller. But it wasn't until he was nearly sixty that he had his greatest success. The director Cameron Mackintosh was working on Les Miserables but did not have a 'book' - that is, a set of songs that he could produce. He remembered a chance meeting he'd had with Kretzmer, recalled the songs he'd written and his connection with France - and invited him to write the lyrics. The show has been running in London for the past 19 years and has played all over the world. Now aged 78, he continues to work. He is currently collaborating with the former ABBA musicians, Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus on another musical.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: Gymnopedies by Yikin Seow Book: The Great War and Modern Memory by Prof Paul Fussell Luxury: Zippo Lighter
