My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Katie Sampias, author of the book Her Story of Jesus. Katie Sampias is a Christian, wife, mother, who writes about mystery, hope and contemplative prayer. All her life she has loved every aspect of stories – reading them, writing them, imagining them and investigating and researching them.   She grew up in Brisbane, Australia, in a busy household with five children. She was the only girl!   It was not long after she learned to write that she discovered her love of writing stories. At the age of 12, she won a trip to Vanuatu for writing she had submitted to the local paper.   She finished school, went to college, and started working in a field that was not writing, but the desire to write never left her. Her Story of Jesus is her first complete book. It was something that bubbled up from within, and she simply had to finish!   In my book review, I stated Her Story of Jesus is a religious historical fiction by Katie Sampias. Katie uses something she calls investigative imaginative prayer to understand Jesus. In other words, she imagined herself with women mentioned in the Bible and then asked questions like, "How did their encounters change them?" "What would it have been like to have been in that place at that time?" "What were they feeling?" Her imaginings led to this book where the reader gets to be inside a gospel story but from the viewpoint of a lesser-known woman.   From Mary, the mother of Jesus, to her midwife, to the bride at the Cana wedding, to Pilate's wife, and more, we see Jesus from the eyes of these women. We learn their story and how meeting Jesus changed them - and why. I loved this idea and actually have been contemplating my own narrative about Mary but didn't have the words like imaginative prayer or imaginative contemplation.   I think that this is a good book even if you don't see yourself as especially religious. It might open your eyes to what women of another time thought and how they responded when meeting a religious figure. Yet that contradiction allows the film to question simplistic assumptions about homelessness and explore its connections with healthcare, disability, mental health, education, housing, identity and dignity.Her other flagship project, The Prostitute's Daughter, turns towards family history. The realism-driven feature explores generational trauma, survival, identity and the reclamation of stories too easily defined by others. Pelatan serves across multiple creative roles, including creator, producer, screenwriter and lead actress.Together, the projects reveal what makes JosetteXMP Productions distinctive: an interest in people who are often spoken about by systems but rarely given ownership of the narrative.Perhaps the most compelling aspect of Pelatan's story is that it refuses the familiar architecture of an inspirational profile.There is no convenient before adversity and after success.Her story is still unfolding.She continues creating while navigating uncertainty. She continues researching while questioning systems. She is developing films while building a company and imagining larger ideas around education, health, housing and human potential.

Eastern States 100 is over, and if you were watching the race unfold this weekend, you know there was a lot more going on than just who crossed the finish line first. Yes, Kaylee Frederick is the story. She didn't just win the women's race. She won Eastern States outright, becoming the first woman in race history to take the overall win. And she did it on a day when simply getting through 103 miles of Pennsylvania trail was an accomplishment all by itself. At just 21, Kaylee finished in 23:09, setting a new women's course record in the process. She crossed the line around 4:09 Sunday morning after more than 23 hours of running through the Pennsylvania heat and humidity. But we'll also talk about the rest of the race. Because 2026 Eastern States brought the heat and humidity, and then some more humidity for good measure. This is already one of the biggest 100-milers in the East: 103 miles, more than 20,000 feet of climbing, remote and technical trails, and long stretches where you really have to take care of yourself. Add in a hot, humid day and things get interesting pretty quickly. Effort that normally feels manageable started costing runners more. Cooling became critical. Hydration and electrolytes became a constant calculation. The climbs got harder, the runnable sections weren't nearly as runnable, and eventually everybody had to figure out just how much they were willing to give the conditions. Eastern States has never really been generous with buckles. Historically, only about half of the runners who start make it to the finish. In 2025, 258 runners started and 133 finished. The race's nine-year average finish rate is just 49.8%, and some years have dropped into the 30-percent range. That's the part of Eastern States that can get lost when we're talking about the front of the pack. While Kaylee was out there rewriting the record book, hundreds of other runners were having their own completely different Eastern States experience. Some were racing for a podium. Some were chasing a PR. Some were trying to beat a cutoff. Some were just trying to keep moving when their body was very clearly asking them to stop. Those are the stories that make this race what it is. So this week on The Running Mullet, we're recapping Eastern States from top to bottom. From Kaylee's historic win, to the standout performances that lead to podium finishes, the runners who fought their way through the heat and humidity, the people who surprised themselves, the people who got absolutely humbled by Pennsylvania, the DNFs, the buckle stories, the weather, the strategy, the amazing aid stations, and finally what it actually takes to get through one of the hardest 100-milers around. Because at Eastern States, the winner gets the headline, but every finisher has a story.

The 2026 Division I Women's Basketball National Championship Coach joined us today in The Sports Deli (as did a few other incredible guests like Annie Meyers, the most famous UCLA Bruin in HERstory, Elizabeth Galloway, former professional women's basketball player in the Original "W", the WBL, the Women's Basketball League and Jim Harrick, former Head Men's Basketball Coach at UCLA, where he won the 1995 National Title, and Natalie White, Founder and CEO of Moolah Kicks - the first ever female brand basketball shoe, made by females for females. I'm extremely humbled and grateful. Cori Close has been the Head Women's Basketball Coach at UCLA since 2011. There’s the hard sciences, there’s math, and then there’s the more liberal arts side of education, which is important, but a lot more difficult to teach or work through with games. The best way to practice ELA is through just doing more reading and writing. But you can support foundational skills through work with board games, and also inspire more practice for older kids with “gameschooling”. We split the “older kid” skills into three groups, with games for each: Reading You’re looking for chunks of prose text (not a rule book, not just a few words of flavor text) that will force some practice. This is for fluency, simply encountering more text in more ways. Tales of the Arabian Nights – roll & move blended with adventure choices (read chunks of story) Look for sequential text – that has a beginning, middle, and end. But doesn’t have to be long! Games like HerStory or Trekking through History have a few sentences on each card. Above and Below or other similar games from Red Raven will have you read chunks in the rulebook that are short stories. Choose a path after reading some dialogue and description! 0:32:30 Writing Writing is a hard skill to build on in games. Penmanship can be improved through simple practice. But the harder skill to build is “how to tell a story” (creative writing). Tall Tales has players physically WRITE DOWN a scene based on a prompt and restrictions. Then all the story ideas are read out loud. One is chosen to be the “real” story and the next round must build off that. Untold: Adventures Await is an RPG/storytelling game using Story Cubes. It provides a lot of scaffolding to assist. But you could do much of it with just the StoryCubes and a piece of paper. Bear in Mind uses storytelling as an aid to memory! Of course, all role-playing games can encourage improvement in creative story telling. Dixit is a story-telling game. Normally the storyteller is trying to match with just 1-2 players, not everyone. But you can change the rules around this! 0:39:00 Spelling & Vocabulary Talk about a tough skill to teach or practice! Most word games are pretty punishing for bad spelling. But there are a few that can be used for practice and improvement. (We did a Room to Grow on this topic a few years ago.) Bananagrams – especially when using B-mods for younger kids! Illiterati – which is a cooperative game: everyone can assist each other in making words or sharing letters. And the supervillain theme can give an extra little push for a kid on the fence about a word game. Scattergories – mostly for vocabulary (but also penmanship!)
