Show #647 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 20th November 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. AUDI REVEALS ITS SECOND ELECTRIC CAR, THE E-TRON SPORTBACK The Verge reports: "Audi just pulled the wraps off of the E-Tron Sportback, the company’s second electric car, at the 2019 LA Auto Show. Coming to Europe in the first half of 2020, the top-tier version of the new premium EV will offer up to 446 kilometers of range (277 miles) and is powered by dual electric motors with a total power output of 265kW, or around 350 horsepower. A slightly less powerful version of the Sportback with a smaller battery will start at €71,350 (around $79,000)." https://www.theverge.com/2019/11/19/20973020/audi-e-tron-sportback-sedan-la-auto-show-2019 According to TechCrunch: "Audi has delivered 18,500 of its all-electric e-tron SUVs globally since March 2019 when the vehicle first came to market. Audi plans to offer two variants of the vehicle, a Sportback 50 and Sportback 55. The Sportback will come to Europe first in spring 2020. The Sportback 55 will come to the U.S. in fall 2020. The 2020 Audi e-tron Sportback has a 86.4 kilowatt-hour battery pack that has a range of up to 446 kilometers (277.1 miles) in the EU’s WLTP cycle. The EPA estimates aren’t out yet, but expect the range numbers to be slightly lower. The company is targeting an EPA range of about 220 miles over the 204 miles of range that the regular e-tron gets." https://techcrunch.com/2019/11/19/audis-next-all-electric-vehicle-the-e-tron-sportback-is-a-coupe-suv/ 2019 AUDI E-TRON RECEIVES A 5-STAR US NCAP RATING The 2019 Audi e-tron, the first fully-electric Audi model, has earned the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration New Car Assessment Program’s maximum overall safety rating of five stars in its latest series of tests. Additionally, standard automatic emergency braking is offered as part of Audi pre sense® front. Using a front-mounted camera, the e-tron can help initiate braking at speeds of up to 52 mph for detected pedestrians and bicyclists in front of the vehicle and can bring a vehicle to a full stop when traveling at speeds under 35 mph based on IIHS tests. GOOGLE MAPS 10.30 PREPARES TO LET YOU PAY FOR EV CHARGING AND FIND COMPATIBLE PLUGS "Google Maps 10.30 for Android has added strings that suggest it will support making payments straight from the app." says XDA Developers: "These features are not yet live in the Google Maps app for Android. We’ll probably see an announcement from Google in a few days or weeks, though. The last time Google Maps was updated with a new EV-related feature was back in April when they added real-time availability of charging ports. With new electric vehicles on the way, the Maps app is long overdue for new functionality." https://www.xda-developers.com/google-maps-10-30-electric-vehicle-charging-payments-compatible-plugs/ 2021 TOYOTA RAV4 PRIME HAS 302 HP "The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid was introduced here at the L.A. Auto Show, and although it doesn't have much in the way of visual differentiation, its spec sheets pops with eye-opening stat after another." reports AutoBlog; "It produces a total system output of 302 horsepower, making it the most powerful compact SUV from a non-luxury brand. Toyota says it'll also go from 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds. As for eco credentials, the RAV4 Prime can go an estimated 39 miles on its battery alone, which is better than any current plug-in hybrid SUV and behind only the Polestar 1, Chevrolet Volt (soon-to-be-discontinued) and Honda Clarity. Even the Toyota Prius Prime manages only 25 miles." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/11/20/2021-toyota-rav4-prime-revealed TESLA ‘HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH ‘SUPERCHARGER FIRE,’ SAYS LOCAL FIRE OFFICIAL "A fire was reported to have been caused by a Tesla Supercharger at a Wawa store in New Jersey last weekend, but a local fire official now says Tesla had nothing to do with the cause of the fire." says electrek: "The next day, a Wawa spokesperson told CNBC that the issue was with the Supercharger station. But now we learn that Tesla had actually nothing to do with the fire. Matthew Palmeiri, who works for Parsippany-Troy Hills Fire Department District 5, told Automotive News that Jersey Central Power & Light had a problem with a transformer next to the Tesla Supercharger" https://electrek.co/2019/11/19/tesla-had-nothing-to-do-with-supercharger-fire-says-local-fire-official/ KARMA REVERO GTS DEBUTS WITH MORE RANGE " the GTS knocks over a half-second off the sprint to 60 mph. The Revero GTS requires just 3.9 seconds for the trip, and with the accelerator firmly pinned it will keep pulling to an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph." writes Motor1.com: " The Revero GTS can travel 380 miles when using its range-extending BMW-sourced three-cylinder engine to generate electricity. Fully charged, its upgraded battery pack can power the Revero 80 miles without the engine kicking in. Throughout all this, total output is actually the same 536 horsepower that you’ll find on the Revero GT, which makes the performance enhancements on the GTS even more impressive." https://www.motor1.com/news/383268/karma-revero-gts-debuts/ PORSCHE TAYCAN CARB CERTIFICATION REVEALS UP TO 282 MILES OF RANGE And staying with Motor1: "An eagle-eyed TaycanEVForum.com member posted a copy of the Porsche Taycan’s CARB (California AirResource Board) certificate that hints at the EV sedan’s real-world electric range. The document reveals the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S returning 281.8 and 282.7 miles, respectively. However, this isn’t the first time CARB’s number exceeded estimates. The board certified the Jaguar I-Pace with 334 miles of range, which far exceeds the 234-mile range given by the U.S. EPA. There’s a significant chance that when the EPA tests the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S, its numbers could be closer to our estimates or even lower, possibly hovering around 200 miles." https://www.motor1.com/news/383241/porsche-taycan-range-estimate-carb/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… "If you were marketing a for an new EV brand (or Tesla) how would you do it?” I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 251 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Hover the show is called EV news daily and as an EV enthusiast i don't consider a plugin hybrid an EV. could you please consider giving less attention to plugin hybrids and focus more on pure EV’s. PETE GLASS [edited highlights] 1] Prime focus of course BEVs. 2] Yes to left field EVs ‘occasionally’, scooters, push-bikes, motor-bikes, vans, buses, garbage trucks, excavators, ships etc. – but carefully rationed, when the story really is a good one [good = price, capability, delivery and not vapourware]. 3] PHEVs and RExs: ‘handle with care’ avoid anything that smells of a compliance car! ASEER I would say not only should you still cover Hybrid/PHEV in your podcast as well as BEV but actually it might be best way to engage with those who are ‘EV curious’ as I was and because of your Podcast I bought a Ioniq Hybrid and met up with Oxford EV at EVs in the park and directly because of this I will be test driving the MG ZS EV. So to be clear you have steered my choices and it wasn’t because I didn’t know that diesel / petrol was bad but maybe because a car costs a lot of money (well it is for me) and played it safe and my reference previously was read motoring magazines that were obvious heavily biased. AMY MACPHERSON I personally am interested in ALL things renewable energy and clean tech. So, I have no issue hearing about hybrids, bikes, solar panels etc. Ps I live in PEI Canada and drive a 2018 Bolt and Love it!! We are also installing our second solar system next week MATT PISCIONE I think you nailed the format of the podcast. Like you have said before, a full EV isn't for everyone just yet, so keeping people aware of their plug-in hybrid options is necessary. Plus the additional information about other advancement in the clean energy industry is fascinati MARK GARNETT Keep Main focus on EVs. Sure include other electric (bikes, planes, trains, scooters). Include some Plugin hybrid esp if good EV range. Defiantly keep range extenders. RICHARD CHAPMAN I wanted to say that I completely agree that you should still talk about Hybrids. here in Western Australia we only have one Supercharger and it's a whopping 1,672 miles to the next one in South Australia. There aren't even any in the Northern Territory or Tasmania. Outside of the South West of Western Australia we have to rely on AC charging, but even with 22kW on-board charging in my Model S it's severely limiting and makes mainstream adoption unlikely. We've done long trips but it can be a challenge. For places where there's no fast DC charging network (still most of the planet) the perfect car would be a Tesla with a small petrol range extender so that you know you can go absolutely anywhere and only use petrol when you had no other choice. LISA ALLEN The only hybrids we should be talking about are plug-ins with at least 40+ range (Honda Clarity, the late Chevy Volt
Show #464 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 6th May 2019. MERCEDES-BENZ EQC SALES RELEASE & START OF PRODUCTION The first EQC will roll off the production line at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen. "Mercedes-Benz EQC just entered production in Bremen, Germany where it is assembled along with the conventional C-Class Saloon and Estate, as well as the GLC and GLC Coupé. Later this year, production will be launched in China too in partnership with BAIC, by joint venture Beijing Benz Automotive Co. Ltd. (BBAC)." reports InsideEvs: "Merdeces-Benz joins the Tesla Model X, Audi e-tron and Jaguar I-PACE on the high-end part of the market. Prices in Germany (incl. 19% VAT) starts from €71,281, while the launch edition EQC Edition 1886 starts from €84,930.30. 80 kWh battery packs are assembled by Deutsche Accumotive at its site in Kamenz (near Dresden), Germany using LG Chem batterycells." https://insideevs.com/news/348128/daimler-starts-production-mercedes-benz-eqc/ AUDI CONSIDERING 'VEGAN PACKAGE' FOR E-TRON ELECTRIC SUV "The first-ever all-electric SUV from Audi is subtle and silent both in how it sounds, and the statement it makes. For the e-tron, Audi didn’t go for the quirky compliance car theme that we can find in everything from the BMW i3 to the Honda Clarity. Instead, it’s looking to tastefully blend into the crowd." says Manoli for Motor1.com today: "There’s no denying that buyers for premium electric SUVs might also be similar to the crowd that cares about their environmental impact in more ways than just driving. That can include the use of sustainable, recycled, or upcycled materials for vehicle interiors that would fit with folks who enjoy a vegan lifestyle, and it seems that Audi is listening." https://www.motor1.com/news/348135/audi-considering-vegan-package-electric-suv/ TESLA NAVIGATE ON AUTOPILOT: LANE CHANGE, ROAD DEBRIS, NO CONFIRMATION “Now that Tesla's Navigate on Autopilot feature has undergone another substantial update, it's high time to see exactly how it reacts. Thankfully, Tesla owner and YouTuber Scott Kubo does a solid job of showing off the feature while providing a nice narrative. The best part is, he doesn't ramble on and on, which keeps the video short and concise" report Steven Loveday for InsideEVs.com: "Kubo shows his Tesla Model 3 changing lanes on its own, without any driver confirmation. Moreover, there's some debris on the road that appears as though it's left over from a previous accident." https://insideevs.com/news/348088/video-tesla-navigate-autopilot-challenges Matthias Schmidt @auto_schmidt "Pure electric new car registrations in W.Europe have now surpassed >100,000 units after just 4-Months this year. Consequentially more new pure electric BEV passengers cars took to the streets during the first third of 2019 than during the whole of 2016." https://twitter.com/auto_schmidt/status/1125471147284254721 ELECTRIFY AMERICA HOSTS "CHARGE FORWARD" TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP "It's been exactly a year since Electrify America turned on the power at their first DC Fast charger site on May 2nd, 2018. Since then, the EV charging network born out of the Volkswagen diesel scandal has been quite busy. In addition to the rollout of their network of high-speed DC fast charge stations, Electrify America had some more news to announce, so they invited select media outlets to their headquarters in Reston, VA for a technology workshop." says Tom Molughney for InsideEVs.com: "Electrify America president & CEO Giovanni Palazzo spoke first and proudly announced that they have just commissioned their 161st site. Palazzo also said they are targeting to have 484 sites open by the end of 2019. Those sites will include 2,000+ high-speed DC fast charge stations, and 2,800 level 2 chargers. The sites are an average of 70 miles apart, and have a maximum distance between sites of 120 miles." "The CEO also reaffirmed that Electrify America will indeed begin to employ Plug&Charge technology before the end of this year. Plug&Charge uses the global standard ISO 15118 which identifies the vehicle when it's plugged in, eliminating the need to use an RFID card or credit card to activate a charging session. Palazzo said that a multitude of auto manufacturers were already working on getting their EVs ready to utilize Plug&Charge technology." "In addition to the new lower per-minute rate and the membership plans, Electrify America will be charging based on the car's maximum charge rate. There are three different levels that will determine what the customer pays by the minute: 0-75 kW; 76-125 kW & 126-350 kW. The exact pricing for these three levels hasn't been formally announced yet, but this does seem to be a reasonable way to establish the pricing structure." https://insideevs.com/news/347986/electrify-america-charge-forward-workshop/ VOLKSWAGEN GROUP IS TRAINING ITS EMPLOYEES IN E-MOBILITY Zwickau will begin producing the compact ID.* this fall already – which is why the plant in Saxony is one of the first sites to provide comprehensive e-mobility training for its employees. Three thousand production workers alone will complete the training center’s e-mobility program, which is preparing them for the new production requirements. More than 300 apprentices have gone through the high-voltage training thus far – and there is a big demand for them at the company. CHINA'S LITHIUM SUPPLY LETS IT FAR OUTSTRIP U.S. IN CELL PRODUCTION "As the U.S. president pushes for more things to be built in his country instead of China, the push to build electric vehicles there comes as the rush for batteries persists. And China holds the lead in lithium supply over the U.S." writes Zac for InsideEvs.com today: "According to Bloomberg, both countries are investing heavily in other countries that are rich in lithium mining – Argentina, Australia and Chile, specifically. But China arguably has an edge because it is also doing mineral collection in its home country, whereas analysts say it's been decades since such facilities have been built in the U.S. Where the U.S. produces a little more than 10 percent of lithium-ion cells in the world, China controls roughly two-thirds of the market, the publication reported. China was by far the leading market for EVs in 2018 and the gap among the U.S. is only set to grow in the next few years, according to Bloomberg's analysts." UKRI STUDYING DEMOCRATIZED PEER-TO-PEER MICROGRIDS "UK Research and Innovation has begun a study to determine how people with small rooftop solar systems — called micro-generators — could create a peer-to-peer energy market. The research is funded by UKRI’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council." according to CleanTechnica: "Entitled the Household-Supplier Energy Market Project, the focus is on creating a democratized peer-to-peer (P2P) energy market. Currently, a homeowner with a rooftop solar system can use the electricity created within the home or sell it to the grid. In a peer-to-peer energy market, any two individuals or households could directly buy from and sell to each other, without involving utilities or other third parties." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/05/06/ukri-studying-democratized-peer-to-peer-microgrids/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Show #404. Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 3rd March 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Hello to new Patrons of the podcast. All new PRODUCERS welcome ROB DICKINSON, CHARLIE MILNER and LLOYD WATKIN. HYUNDAI KONA REMOVED FROM SALE IN THE UK, BACK TO WAITING LIST First some news about the Hyundai Kona Electric. We last heard that it was so popular there was a 42-52 week waiting list. Some people were told "at least" a year. And now Hyundai has removed it from sale in the UK. On the web page there is now a simple place to register your interest in the car and join the waiting list. Whilst I understand you don't want to have buyers waiting too long, there comes a time when even a huge fan and cheerleader for the Kona like I am has to say, who dropped the ball? Is this a mistake? Is this just another example of auto makers no wanting to sell EVs until 2020? As an aside, maybe I'm having a sense of humour failure but the page on the Hyundai UK website is titled "Charge to the front of the queue". https://www.hyundai.co.uk/reservations/kona-electric FEBRUARY 2019 U.S. PLUG-IN EV SALES REPORT CARD "5,750 Model 3 sedans in the U.S. this February, in addition to some deliveries in Canada and a growing number of cars in Europe and China. So, while Model 3 deliveries in the U.S. are down once again month-over-month, this was reported and anticipated. As far as we can tell, Model 3 deliveries overall on a global level are impressive to say the least. Moreover, year-over-year sales are up significantly, and that’s the metric the rest of the automotive industry focuses on when reporting growth. Our U.S. Model S and X estimates stand at 800 and 1,100, respectively." "Based on our data collection, GM delivered 1,225 Bolt EVs and just 615 Volts in the U.S. in February 2019." "Nissan LEAF sales for the month of January were down from prior months. Moving into February sales are suffering again: The automaker reported deliveries of a just 654 LEAFs in the U.S. last month." "Honda Clarity deliveries in the U.S. in February amounted to a reported 1,281, according to the automaker. According to Honda’s report to InsideEVs, total Clarity PHEV deliveries hit 1,213 in the U.S. this February." https://insideevs.com/february-2019-u-s-plug-in-ev-sales-report-card/ ASTON MARTIN REVEALS EYE-WATERING PERFORMANCE FIGURES FOR VALKYRIE HYPERCAR The heart of the Aston Martin Valkyrie hypercar’s hybrid powertrain naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 engine. That power plant is good for a very round 1,000hp. That consists of a bespoke motor from Integral Powertrain in the United Kingdom, and a battery system from Croatian EV supercar specialist Rimac. The electrical system delivers an additional 160hp, with a further 206lbft of torque available. Aston's advertised power figure of 1,160 horses is achieved by coupling the 1,000-horsepower V-12 to a racing-grade, Rimac-influenced Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS), which gives the already potent vehicle an electric boost at the push of a button. 5 REASONS TO BUY AN ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE Sabrina at RideApart.com: "A staggering number of companies—most of which are start ups—are coming up with their vision of the electric motorcycle. While the technology continues to evolve, it has already come a long way from its first inception on the market." Perks - there are government incentives that allow you to reduce the purchase price of the bike. You can get a rebate at the federal level, but also from your state. Maintenance - Without any fluids and fewer mechanical parts to worry about, electric motorcycles are a good way to ride about worry free. Accessibility - All you have to do is twist the throttle and hit the road. Savings - “fuelling” up on electricity is cheaper than filling up on gas. Fun - Because everything is processed electronically, it makes accelerations almost instant and takeoffs, that much more fun. https://www.rideapart.com/articles/307187/5-reasons-buy-electric-motorcycle/3813389/ MORE ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES PLEASE: INTRODUCING THE REGENT "There’s a new electric motorcycle company popping up every day. We are living through a renaissance" says Kate at RideApart: “Meet the Regent, a bike as stately and British-looking as its name, but wait! It’s made in Sweden. Apart from a blank panel hiding a battery where any traditional motorcycle’s engine would be, this looks the part of a classic Brit bike. These machines are self-defined “retro cafe racers.”. the Regent will have a 150 km range (that’s about 93 miles, which is not shabby). It has a 72V – 80Ah battery that puts out 15–30 hp. It has a top speed 135 km/h (that’s just shy of 84mph)." https://www.rideapart.com/articles/306374/more-electric-motorcycles-introducing-regent/ Porsche launches developer competition with Mission E Cross Turismo data Porsche is inviting developers from around the world to work on digital mobility solutions for future Porsche sports cars with the launch of the second edition of the “Porsche Next OI” developer competition is being kicked off. Teams will have access to more than 300 different data sources and functions and, crucially, work with in-browser Porsche car emulators, namely the Porsche Mission E Cross Turismo electric study to present and test their apps and services around the clock in a realistic environment. QUESTION OF THE WEEK Raj Badwell I bought my Leaf from Arnold Clark and got a bargain because they didn't know what they where selling. I learned all I needed from YouTube, this podcast and Facebook owner page. Arnold Clark offer good customer service and I got my 16plate 30kwh tekna with 6.6kw charger for £3k less then everywhere else. My advice would be learn as I did and go to a non EV spicalist as you can get your self a bargin. George Clargo Best place to get an ev from in my opinion is Go Green Autos from Oxford (www.gogreenautos.co.uk). Very knowledgeable guy and a great stock of cars and vans. Brought my work van from him and currently buying another from with him ATM. He's happy to deliver all over the UK and does detailed videos for all of his cars showing all dents and scratches. Best car buying experience in my opinion. Give me the ability to run my gardening business (Clargo Garden Services) as a green business will electric van and battery powered garden tools. He's also helping organise The Oxford Electric Car show in Oxford on the 15th June. David Emeny I lease my Leaf 40kWh from DriveElectric. Not sure this counts as ‘buying’ but I think they’re worth mentioning because it was a way for me to switch to an EV quickly instead of driving around in a petrol car for another year while I saved enough for a deposit or sat on a waiting list. Stefan I would like to take the opportunity to break the monopoly of car manufacturers with electric cars. As a dealer today, I have to bind myself to exactly one manufacturer. My dream future looks like any car dealership can sell any brand. For example, a dealer could specialize in sports cars. As a customer, I could admire all the cars right next to each other. The dealer would have more power over the manufacturers because he could expose the cars to real competition. He also doesn't have to worry about going broke when a brand is not doing so well economically and he doesn't have to invent fairy tales about how bad another brand is because he has it in his program himself. I hope that the EU will make such concepts possible in the future! Peter Mooney I purchased a Mercedes B250e from an independent garage called ecarlogical http://ecarlogical.co.uk/ It wasn’t my first choice of car or garage. I originally looked at a similar spec car in a main dealer closer to where I live and even took it out for a test drive. I loved the car but was worried about range and lack of rapid charging, etc. I decided not to go for it so called the Mercedes dealer and thanked him for his help. I also called ecarlogical out of courtesy. The salesman I spoke with Alex, encouraged me to reconsider because it is such a great car. He compared the two cars (his and the one from Mercedes) and walked me through (with patience) charging locations, how long it takes and recommended websites. He even said I could take it out on a test drive for as long as I wanted. I’m sure if I had asked he would have let me have it for a few days. Andre Evans ROss I have to share Carvana with you again. They're also only available in the U.S. and they've been around for at least 8 years. I always describe them as the Amazon.com of cars and if going to dealer is as loathsome to you as much as it's to me then Carvana is definitely an option (a dealership experience is what led me to purchase my EV with Carvana). Josh Pritt, Co-founder Space Coast EV Drivers club I will hopefully order my Model 3 from Tesla.com. otherwise I will buy a Chevy Bolt from Maher Chevrolet in st Petersburg Florida. They are one of the few dealers that understand EVs and have 3 level 2 chargers installed around the outside of the dealership! Art Lighthouse My wife and I decided to finally buy an EV after 13 years of saving for one, and we settled upon the Tesla Model X. With a single phone call, a sales rep drove a Model X to our house, took our whole family out for an extended test drive, kids included, giving both my wife and I a chance to drive the car. He let the kids play around inside and out, experimenting with any buttons they could find, playing with the electronic seats, the touch screen, and, of course, the falcon wing doors. Then the sales rep capped it off with a garage fitting to make sure that the rather large Model X could not only fit in our garage, but that the falcon wing doors could open up inside the garage as well. we bought online the very next day. The buying process was so convenient Ken MOrris I expect to get my first EV car from as a 2nd hand model, most likely from a website based purchase, hopefully later this year. It will have to be 2nd hand as I couldn’t stretch to a new model, but something that certainly appeals to me at the moment as that as ranges on new models increase, this should provide a brief 2nd hand market (depressed values) in the next few years on models with low mileages and a lot of life left, but with what might be seen as unappealing low range. ANDREW CRIPPS I got great help with EVs from Motorize EV store in Sidney, British Columbia. They were very knowledgeable, had good inventory, and are always super helpful. https://motorize.ca/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Keep your comments coming in on email and YouTube… How do you feel about Tesla’s move to online-only sales? Do you want to test drive a car first? What about if you have to arrange finance to buy it, even tho Tesla say you can return it?

Driving from Northern California to Southern California and back has been routine in recent years. The 800-mile round-trip trek along Interstate 5 is always interesting, particularly when driving a 2017 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell. Six weeks ago was the most unusual trek I've taken from Sacramento to the Los Angeles region (this time to Long Beach) because I drove the sedan that runs on hydrogen. The 2017 and 2018 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell are available for lease in California. From the expediency of refueling to the performance of the Clarity and from the use of the High Occupancy Lane as a single occupant to running out of hydrogen were all part of the unique experience. The Clarity won me over quickly. I wrote my syndicated automotive for Bay Area News Group, Autopia, about my experiences with the Clarity, and I received several critical letters. Steve Ellis is the manager of fuel cell marketing for Honda, and he has also had several other responsibilities in the alternative fuel industry. Before my trip, Ellis provided a map of the hydrogen charging stations for my trip and other details. He was instrumental in helping me after I ran out of hydrogen on my return trip. Ellis is our guest on Episode 44 of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Co-host Bruce Aldrich and I discuss the Honda Clarity and its three trims, hydrogen, electric and hybrid. We also discuss hydrogen's future in the automotive world, and I ask Steve to address the concerns of three readers of my column. I've printed their email letters below (without the authors' names). 1. I was not able to find a contact address on the True Zero website, the hydrogen source for the Honda Clarity. I think True Zero is a very misleading name for your source since two-thirds of the hydrogen provided is from fossil fuel sources. So long as this is the case, True Zero is simply false as a name for this company. We know hydrogen can be produced from water, but so long as the process depends on fossil fuels, as it does for the bulk of the hydrogen from True Zero, then it is not a solution to fossil fuel-driven climate change. A useful article would be one comparing total emissions from plug-in electric vehicles fueled by solar panels with currently available hydrogen-powered vehicles powered primarily by fossil fuels. I've driven a plug-in electric Ford Focus since 2012. If more of us did this, we'd see much cleaner air in the SF Bay Area and fewer children would suffer from asthma. 2. In the Drive section of the San Jose Mercury-News May 27, 2018, the headline reads "Honda Clarity Fuel Cell thrives on water." This is very wrong. It is as bad as saying that humans thrive on urine. To thrive on something should mean to do well as a result of it. This fuel cell does not use water as fuel; it uses hydrogen. It emits water as a waste product. Even if you try to justify it by saying that hydrogen is made from water, the water does not supply the energy. Something else (typically electricity) supplies the energy to make hydrogen from water. 3. I drive a (Chevy) Volt and read with interest your article which appeared today in the SJ Mercury. However, when I did the math I wondered what I was missing. You said you drove 221 miles on 3.658 kilos at a cost of $60.19. My math shows that the fuel cost was .27 per mile. Assume a Prius getting 50 miles per gallon and a fuel cost of $4.00 per gallon. That comes to $.08 per mile. The cost of the Clarity is over 3X the Prius. So while I would love to see fuel cell cars succeed, how can anyone be expected to buy a Clarity other than because she or he loves the environment and wants to make a statement? While I think the article was great on describing the vehicle, don't you believe you need to make these points to your readers who may not think through how the economics compare? In addition to its availability on this website, the Weekly Driver Podcast is also available on iTunes, Stitcher and Podtail .
William Lai of Fremont, California, and Chris White of West Sacramento, California, are among early adopters to the Honda Clarity. Lai, who has owned three electrics cars, drives the all-electric variety. Walker drives the hydrogen-powered Clarity Fuel Cell. The Honda Clarity is currently only available in California and Oregon. Chris White drives a Honda Clarity Fuel Cell. It operates on hydrogen and has a 366-mile range. A pioneer in the alternative fuel vehicles (the original Insight debuted in 2000, a few months before the Toyota Prius) Honda has also equipped its new vehicles with Honda Sensing. It's the carmaker's “intelligent suite of safety and driver-assistance technologies designed to alert you to things you might miss while driving.” In Episode 35 of The Weekly Driver podcast below, hosts Bruce Alert and James Raia discuss with Lai and White their experiences with their new cars. Specifically, the two guests detail one component of Honda Sensing, the Collision Mitigation Braking System. It “applies brake pressure when an unavoidable collision is determined.” William Lai drives a Honda Clarity electric. It has an 89-mile range. Lai and White believe the system stopped potential catastrophe before it occurred. The two Clarity drivers also provide insight into their driving habits and how the Clarity fits into their respective lifestyles. White, director of communications at the California Fuel Cell Partnership in Sacramento, was the first person in Northern California to have the Clarity. Lai leased the electric trim after changing his mind from his intial interest in the Chevrolet Bolt. Saturday 7th April 2018. LEAF SALES IN JAPAN Last month in Japan it was a fantastic time for Nissan LEAF sales. And by fantastic I mean up 91%. Over 10,000 have been sold in Q1 in Japan and a total of over 18,000. And since they first went in same in January 2011, 100,000 LEAFs have been sold over the three variations. Add on top over 2,000 in Norway, 1,500 in the U.S., there heading towards selling 10,000 per month of the new model. HONDA GO DRIVERLESS AND WIRELESS There’s a full BEV version of the new Honda Clarity coming soon and Honda, whilst they’re not giving up on fuel cells, are moving forward with EVs. Two stories coming via Clean Technica. Firstly they say Waymo: “may be working with Honda on an entirely new kind of delivery vehicle that drives itself. It bases its information on a recent profile of Waymo CEO John Krafcik by In his interview with Bloomberg, Krafcik said not to expect the new service to take the form of a “traditional car driven on roads.” Engadge tbelieves that comment means Waymo is ready to create a vehicle from scratch with an automaker like Honda rather than modifying existing models. Krafcik hinted the new self-driving vehicle from Honda might be smaller than a truck but larger than a car and would come without a steering wheel. Secondly, how to charge a vehicle which doesn’t have a driver, apart from when it returns to base or depot. What about when it needs a midday top up. Well the same article continues: “WiTricity and Honda will make a joint presentation about wireless charging technology to the Society of Automotive Engineers World Conference Experienceon April 11. Kosuke Tachikawa, head of Honda R&D Americas, will discuss how EVs — and particularly those powered by wireless charging — will connect to the grid and enable bi-directional energy flow that will stabilize the grid and create a truly seamless, renewable energy source.” MCLAREN RULING OUT ELECTRIC CAR…FOR NOW Jens Ludmann, chief operating officer at McLaren Automotive, talking to Wheels about the ideal specs for a supercar EV, “We are investigating the pure electric technology for our products,” said Ludmann, speaking to Wheelsat the Geneva motor show. “We very closely look at what the technology can deliver, however we think for a pure electric vehicle the technology is not yet mature enough – and that has to do with the battery performance.” Energy density is the issue. According to Ludmann, current battery technology is more than sufficient for everyday driving, but can’t manage the extreme charge/discharge e requirement of racetrack use while also remaining light enough to preserve chassis agility. “To talk in numbers, the battery technology should achieve 500 watt-hours per kilogram. That is a level where it really makes sense. Today we are around 180 watt-hours per kilogram. So there is significant improvement required to get it where we want it to be.” CONGRATULATIONS TO EVOKE com.au say that: “Australia’s first chauffeur-driven Tesla service, Evoke, has surpassed more than one million kilometres of zero-emission motoring by transporting passengers in its electric vehicles. In reaching this milestone, the Sydney-based company, founded by Pia Peterson in 2015, has offset more than 325,000 kilograms of carbon emissions and avoided burning 130,000 litres of petrol. As well as keeping the air cleaner, Evoke’s achievement enables many of its corporate customers to claim emission reductions delivered by the sustainable transport service as Scope 3 carbon offsets.” RENEWABLES PLUS TESLA BATTERIES And finally, Energy Matters have been talking about using batteries alongside renewables: “Danish company Vestas hopes to solve the problem of creating reliable energy from intermittent sun and wind sources by using commercial energy storage in new ways. The company has invested €10 million ($16m) to help its partner Northvolt build Europe’s biggest battery cell plant backed by major car investors. Northvolt is headed by former Tesla executive Peter Carlsson. The companies plan to develop industry energy storage based on the latest car battery technology. Vestas will use Tesla batteries in a utility-scale project harnessing wind and solar energy for dispatchable power. This week we have Raymond Chan from the CAA with us to talk about the CAA Worst Roads Campaign. Now in its 15th year, the campaign is designed to gather information from consumers on what they believe are the worst roads in the province. We talk about how the campaign works, what the feedback is from consumers, and where the worst roads in Ontario are located. Consumers can nominate their worst roads at caaworstroads.com. Finally, we share our thoughts on the new vehicle test drive of the week, the 2018 Honda Clarity PHEV.
Matt and Ian are joined this week by Jordan Faulkner. Matt and Jordan recently took the Honda Clarity Hybrid on a range testing expidition to San Fransisco and share their suprising results. We also talk about the story of the time Honda trolled GM using a Chevy Impala.
We recap our trip to the SAE Government/Industry meeting and talk about why the names of safety features can be confusing to consumers. The Honda Clarity joins our test fleet and as always, we answer viewer questions.
