One more look at the new promotion for "The Boys of Dungeon Lane". Paul sits down with Willie Geist, Amelia Dimoldenberg, the NME and you, and we converse on the conversations. This is followed by a bit of chat on Sean Lennon promoting the new "Lennon-Claypool Delirium" album, with even more chat on what's going on. #madeonzencastr
Andy and Tom originally recorded this shortly after watching the Man On The Run documentary back in February, as it sparked some really interesting conversation among fans. One topic that has always fascinated us is Paul's infamous “It's A Drag” comment regarding the tragic death of John Lennon — a quote that, in our opinion, has been widely misunderstood for decades. After seeing the documentary, and especially hearing Sean Lennon's thoughtful understanding of the moment, we felt it was worth revisiting the subject in a deeper way. Add in the differences between British and American colloquialisms, and it's easy to see how Paul's words were interpreted very differently than intended. Either way… you knew we were going to defend our guy here. Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
Welcome to Public Broadcast, the brand new podcast feed from Public Record Online, brought to you by listeners like you and our sponsor, Hello Merch. Formerly known as WASTOIDS, Public Record is your home for art, culture and music—not optimized for the algorithm, but optimized for care, preservation, and archiving. This week: Sean Lennon. The son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Sean is a lifelong musician himself. In the ‘90s, he was signed to the Beastie Boys adventurous Grand Royal Records, which released his debut, 1998's Into the Sun. He followed it up in 2006 with Friendly Fire, released on Capitol Records, and he's played in a dizzying array of bands and projects, including Cibo Matto, The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, Mystical Weapons, and his mom's band, the Plastic Ono Band. He's also in a group with Les Claypool called The Claypool Lennon Delirium, with Primus bassist Les Claypool. They're out on the road now, a traveling circus of rock music that features Primus, The Frog Brigade, and the Claypool Lennon Delirium, which means Les is playing three sets a night, and Sean is playing two—as he's sitting in with the Frog Brigade in addition to his project with Les. Their new album is called The Great Parrot Ox and the Golden Age of Empathy, a psychedelic pop opus that's also a concept album about the role of humanity in the age of AI. Ahead of the tour rolling through Phoenix on June 30th, we caught up with Sean to talk technology, his mother's art and the squares who still don't get it, and whether or not he has any plans to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his album Friendly Fire…but first…are we merely meat machines? Let's dive in and discuss. You can find a full transcript of this chat at publicrecord.online, where you can also scope our other shows, interviews, news reports, and more.
Filmmaker Dave Markey discusses his documentary "The Secret Lives of Bill Bartell", the punk scene's most fascinating, mysterious, and surprisingly influential behind-the-scenes figure. Stream it now | Order the Blu-Ray Topics Include: Dave Markey has a large record collection but stopped buying recently. Vinyl prices have skyrocketed — once cheap records now cost thousands. Dave bought records directly from band members at punk shows. Ian MacKaye sold Dave a first press Minor Threat 7". Dave bought Minutemen and Descendents EPs from D-Boon for a dollar. Dave made the Bill Bartell documentary for people who don't know him. Bill Bartell was unknowable — different things to different people. Dave tried making this film in the 90s; Bill refused to cooperate. The film was made ten years after Bill passed away. Bill Bartell faked backstage passes to get into arena rock shows. Bill named the Iron Maiden live EP Maiden Japan. Bill gave Steve Harris his outfit, worn in the "Run to the Hills" video. Bill saw no distinction between the Scorpions, the Germs, and the Beatles. Bill would tell artists exactly what he thought — no filter whatsoever. Bill told Steve Perry he was responsible for the worst night of his life. Bill told Beck "I don't like you" upon their very first meeting. Bill tried out as guitarist for Public Image Ltd in 1981. Kiss circulated photos of Bill to security: do not let him in. Bill befriended Sean Lennon, which led to a friendship with Yoko Ono. Bill's 1988 Beatlefest noise performance nearly caused a riot. Bill talked Kiss manager Bill Aucoin into discovering Generation X. That connection indirectly launched Billy Idol's massive solo career. Billy Idol himself didn't know Bill Bartell's role until recently. Bill gave Kurt Cobain Os Mutantes tapes, reviving the band's career. Pat Smear and Drew Barrymore were sought for the film but unavailable. Dave's band Painted Willie did Black Flag's final tour in 1986. Dave preferred Painted Willie's early Spinhead Records releases over SST output. The Bill Bartell documentary and Love Dolls films are now on Criterion Channel. Bill Bartell's Flying V guitar now hangs in the Punk Rock Museum, Las Vegas. Bill's money, connections, and secrets largely died with him — still a mystery. The penultimate track on Monolith gainded the most notoriety for its music video and demo bonus track. Sean Lennon tells the tale of hanging with Michael Jackson and his chimp Bubbles at Neverland Ranch, and Sean has a lot to say about that portrayal, which we sample from a 2016 NPR interview. Most childhood odes wouln't sound or read anything like this, so it's a fascinating glimpse inside the weirdness. Plus, the music is good, too!Sean Lennon on NPR's All Songs Considered: https://www.npr.org/sections/allsongs/2016/06/03/480451184/all-songs-1-sean-lennons-surreal-ode-to-michael-jacksons-pet-chimp-bubblesThe Screwups - Bubbles Burst: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dh-qSeZbS4gGet involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

It's a double dose of delirium! We've packaged both the Cricket and the Genie tracks together, as they were released as one to promote the release of Monolith of Phobos, and these two tracks have always been performed together at every single CLD show thus far. Josh's longtime pal Jerry Roscher drops by the pod to discuss why these tracks and this album as a whole speak to him so deeply; for him, it's the sense of melody and songwriting that Sean Lennon brings and how it incorporates with all things Claypool. Great talk about the musical influences and the lyrical narrative!Find Jerry's band, Bluebirds:https://bluebirdsmusic.org/BandcampYoutubeGet involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money
The black comedy thriller "How to Make a Killing" is inspired by the classic 1949 British film, "Kind Hearts and Coronets." But this version isn't quite sure what it wants to be. Glen Powell stars as an heir to a vast fortune who's been disowned by his callous family. He plots to bump off all his relatives who stand in the way of his inheritance. The audience is challenged to root for a guy who's obviously ethically challenged and Powell's charisma is a big help in that department. It's modestly funny, but the tone shifts in “How to Make a Killing” are so jarring that it may give audiences a case of whiplash. As a companion piece to his 2022 hit "Elvis," director Baz Luhrmann offers his first documentary, the concert film, "EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert." Using previously unseen footage stored in a Kansas salt mine, Luhrmann creates a hybrid film that mixes concerts, rehearsals, press conferences and backstage footage into a riveting showcase. For the uninitiated, “EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert” demonstrates why Presley was such a dynamic and popular performer. Paul McCartney's traumatic post-Beatles years are the focus of the involving Amazon Prime documentary, "Man on the Run.” It serves as a companion to McCartney's new book about his time with Wings. Oscar-winning director Morgan Neville skillfully sorts through a ton of footage to assemble a thoughtful look at both the considerable misfires as well as the tremendous successes McCartney experienced in the 1970s. Interviews with McCartney, his family as well as folks like Mick Jagger, Chrissie Hynde and Sean Lennon, make “Man on the Run” an enlightening and entertaining overview.
What do you get when you put on the early Pink Floyd, pair it with Carl Sagan's Cosmos, and throw Buzz Aldrin in for fun, then drink loads of red wine with Sean Lennon and Les Claypool? In 2016, Les Claypool had some time away from Primus and invited Sean Lennon to Rancho Relaxo; Sean had guested on some Primus encores during their 2015 summer tour and jammed backstage with Les, where a connection was born. They fished, drank pinot, discussed nuggets from newspapers and periodicals, in the process birthing The Claypool Lennon Delirium. We get into the details of how these two got together and give an album overview of Monolith of Phobos, a proggy/psychedelic album name if there ever was one. Sean Ono Lennon is on Celebrity Jobber with Jeff Zito this week. He’s a musician, songwriter, producer, and creative force who’s built his own lane—equal parts studio rat, sonic architect, and cultural translator—well beyond the shadow of the most famous last name in music history. But that’s the whole point of Celebrity Jobber: strip the spotlight away and ask the question nobody can Google—what would Sean be doing if the music path never opened up? Because for every gold record, there’s a parallel universe where the dream didn’t hit on time… and the “legend” is just another person clocking in, trying to make rent, trying to make sense of life. Even icons have had that version of the story—Pharrell has said he worked at McDonald’s before the world knew his name, and he’s joked he got fired three times. In other words, without the break… without the moment… without the right door opening… they might’ve been just a jobber.

In this episode of the XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar is joined by acclaimed filmmaker Oliver Murray — the British writer–director redefining modern music documentary through his bold, cinematic approach. Following his 2023 short film Now and Then, The Last Beatles Song — made in collaboration with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Sean Lennon and the Harrison Estate to celebrate the release of the Beatles' final single — Oliver continues his creative relationship with the band by directing the brand-new, final chapter of the legendary Anthology series. First released three decades ago, The Beatles Anthology reinvented the music documentary format. Instead of outside narration and talking heads, it featured John, Paul, George, and Ringo telling their story in their own words — a groundbreaking approach that shaped the way music history is now documented. Under Murray's direction, the series now receives its long-awaited conclusion: Episode Nine, a completely new instalment filled with unseen footage, including intimate behind-the-scenes moments of Paul, George and Ringo reuniting between 1994 and 1995 at Abbey Road. Oliver discusses how he approached taking on one of the most important music stories ever told, the responsibility of handling unreleased Beatles material, and the emotional legacy carried by Episode Nine — both for the surviving members and for generations of fans discovering the band anew. "Watching Paul, Ringo and George together in the '90s, the chemistry is exactly the same as when they were young — it's hard-wired. It feels almost scripted, but it isn't. That bond is still alive." — Oliver Murray A rising force in film and music storytelling, Murray has previously collaborated with some of the biggest names in music, including The Rolling Stones (My Life As a Rolling Stone), The Beatles (Now & Then), and Quincy Jones (They All Came Out to Montreux). His work spans genres — from jazz in Ronnie's: The Story of Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club to classical music with Lang Lang — and has been featured on Disney, Netflix, and the BBC. Listen as Oliver Murray takes us inside the making of Episode Nine — revealing unseen moments of Beatles history and the evolution of his craft — exclusively on the XS Noize Podcast. This is the definitive deep dive into the Beatles' final chapter. "Episode nine concludes the anthology, but it's not an end. The Beatles' legacy isn't a full stop — it's something that's in the groundwater now, something we all inherit." — Oliver Murray About The XS Noize Podcast With over 250 episodes, the XS Noize Podcast has become a trusted home for music's legends, innovators, and trailblazers — a place where real conversations meet real stories. Hosted by Mark Millar, the show has featured an extraordinary lineup including The Charlatans, Gary "Mani" Mounfield, Glen Matlock, Miles Kane, Matt Berninger, Saint Etienne, D:Ream, Gavin Rossdale, The Farm, Snow Patrol, John Lydon, Will Sergeant, Ocean Colour Scene, Gary Kemp, Doves, Gavin Friday, David Gray, Anton Newcombe, Peter Hook, Razorlight, Sananda Maitreya, James, Crowded House, Elbow, Cast, Kula Shaker, Shed Seven, Future Islands, Peter Frampton, Bernard Butler, Steven Wilson, Travis, New Order, The Killers, Tito Jackson, Simple Minds, The Divine Comedy, Shaun Ryder, Gary Numan, Sleaford Mods, and Michael Head — among many more. He's jammed with Freddie Mercury after Live Aid, written songs with Beach Boys royalty, and once found himself shooting guns in a backyard with KISS guitarist Ace Frehley…while on Quaaludes. I'm talking about musician, songwriter, and producer Larry Dvoskin. Over the years, Larry has collaborated with legends like Robert Plant, Sammy Hagar, Sean Lennon, Robin Zander, Bad Company, Al Jardine, and MGMT. In this episode, we cover it all—from co-writing “Wish” with Al Jardine, to talking quantum physics with Paul McCartney, to the unreleased David Bowie–Brandy track he's holding onto. Welcome back to Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions, our weekly conversation podcast. This week on the show, we're joined by Brian and Michael D'Addario, AKA, The Lemon Digs. Their latest slice of toothsome guitar pop is called A Dream Is All We Know. Writing about it in our mid-year favorite albums of 2024 (so far) list, we noted: “A dash of Badfinger, lots of Beach Boys, Todd Rundgren, and Sparks and you're on the track. As always, The Lemon Twigs come arms full of records you can compare their work to, but what makes Brian and Michael D'Addario's latest shine is its emotionality and hard-earned optimism, all of which lends resonance to the jangle and charm.” Rumbling out of Long Island, the Lemon Twigs were just as sharp, funny, and quick as I expected them to be. We got into all sorts of stuff, exploring their relationship with their mentor, Jonathan Rado of Foxygen, their collaborations and run-ins with the great Todd Rundgren and Sean Lennon, and unpack how their undeniable songs actually get written.
