Grace Community Church is where faithful, fervent, and intentional prayer is woven into daily life and ministries. Don't be surprised when a pastor meets with you that we pray. Don't be shocked when we start a meeting; we pray. In Church, we pray. Over food, we pray. Before ministry begins, worship starts, and even funerals and weddings, we pray. Don't be surprised if we pray over you in the hospital, at hospice, or in your home. Prayer is woven into the life of this Church, and we want prayer to be incorporated into your life. This weekend, as we continue our series First Things First, is a call for everyone to make prayer a part of their daily lives. Join us as we look at Matthew 7:7-11 and see why we should all set aside time each day to converse with God.

How Bible Literacy Provides a Defense of the Faith, with Jen Wilkin

In this episode, your intrepid cohosts learn why they need to get literate. "Bible literate," to be exact. According to author and Bible teacher Jen Wilkin, Bible literacy is a vital tool when it comes to apologetics—and "Bible literacy" is not the same thing as "biblical literacy."  Biblical literacy means knowing about the Bible. Bible literacy requires knowing the Bible itself, and Bible literacy is part of what every Christian needs to be able to defend the faith. In the process of getting themselves some Bible literateness, Garrick Bailey and Timothy Paul Jones talk with Jen Wilkin about why there are so few women apologists, why Timothy will never write another book about the end of time, and whether or not it's possible for there to be too many extended guitar solos. (Spoiler alert: there is no such thing as too many guitar solos or a guitar solo that's too long.) Jen offers to play xylophone with the rock band Queen, and Garrick reveals a heretofore-unknown secret about Jen's singing abilities. In the segment known as Indiana, Jones, and the Raiders of Church History, the dynamic duo places a domesticated feline into battle against a king's shield. The cat survives, but only because of its longstanding concordat with Old Scratch himself. Timothy and Garrick also learn the word "strapwork," and "Strapwork" would be the perfect name for a New Wave of British Heavy Metal band. ABOUT YOUR HOSTS AND GUEST Jen Wilkin is an author and Bible teacher from Dallas, Texas and the Executive Director of Care, Family, and Next Gen Ministries at the Village Church in Flower Mound, TX. She has organized and led studies for women in home, church, and parachurch contexts. An advocate for Bible literacy, her passion is to see others become articulate and committed followers of Christ, with a clear understanding of why they believe what they believe, grounded in the Word of God. Timothy Paul Jones, Ph.D., is C. Edwin Gheens Professor of Christian Ministry at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He teaches in the areas of family ministry and applied apologetics. He has authored or edited more than a dozen books, including Why Should I Trust the Bible?, The God Who Goes Before You, Perspectives on Family Ministry, In Church as It Is in Heaven, and Christian History Made Easy. Garrick Bailey is a Ph.D. student in systematic theology at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, studying Herman Bavinck and Roman Catholicism under the supervision of Gregg Allison. Welcome to the Apathetic Episode of The Apologetics Podcast! An episode focused on apathy probably seems appropriate to all of you who have noticed how apathetic Garrick and Timothy have been about releasing new episodes for the past few months. But that wasn't actually due to anyone's apathy! It was because Timothy needed to finish writing a new apologetics book entitled In Church as It Is in Heaven, which InterVarsity Press will release in June 2023.  Now that the book manuscript is in the publisher's hands, the Apologetics Podcast is back and better and more apathetic than ever! Despite this exciting return of new episodes, the dynamic duo refuses to get excited. This is, after all, the Apathetic Episode, which requires them to remain apathetic. This episode's installment of the Raiders of Church History begins with a piece of fruit. In a moment so apathetic that it's almost pathetic, Timothy tosses his pear at a dead head, resulting in a dull draw that makes staring at sleeping rocks seem exciting. The apathy continues when Kyle Beshears reveals that his favorite rock group is Starflyer 59, a shoegaze band that barely qualifies as a rock band at all and happens to be the undisputed master of maudlin and apathetic music. But Starflyer 59 is far from the most apathetic aspect of this Apathetic Episode, because there is only one person in the universe more passionately committed to apathy than Garrick and Timothy, and that's Kyle Beshears. The topic of their discussion is “apatheism,” a term that theology professor Robert Nash coined in 2001 to describe people so apathetic that they don't care whether or not God exists. Garrick and Kyle momentarily threaten the apathy of this episode when they begin talking about Mormonism and start to become almost excited. That's when Timothy bravely but apathetically intervenes to restore the high levels of apathy for which this episode is destined to become famous. ABOUT YOUR HOSTS Timothy Paul Jones, Ph.D., is C. A psalm of Robert the servant of the LORD, a prayer for a heart that is single-minded and free from deceit. To an improvisation on the music of ‘In Church' by Pyotr (Peter) Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Musicians: Christiane von Albrecht and Jo Garcia You are trustworthy, tried and true; While I, as changeable as a weathervane, and only too capable of saying one thing but meaning and doing quite another, often blowing needlessly hot or needlingly cold. Lord of quite remarkable forbearance, Let me yield no place to thoughts and attitudes, or utter words that should find no welcome in my heart. Lord, you know only too well the many ways in which I fail You; The times I fret and worry, and fail to trust You. The times I speak ill of others, neither seeing Your call on their lives, nor heeding Your warning that if I bite and devour others, I risk being destroyed in turn by them. (Gal. 5:15) The times I lash out, shrill and vindictive, my sensitivities bristling like so many quills, or, preferring to sulk, allowing bitter roots of resentment to inject its poison into my heart. Since my conscience and my actions lie exposed before You Lord; how dare I set out to deceive? For the sake of Your glory, and for love of those with whom I have to deal, let my conscience be swift to welcome Your correction. Oh God, will You help me to cleanse my hands and purify my heart from these sins that lie crouching at the door? (Jas. 4:8, Gen. 4:7) Teach me to see off bears and wolves, and to wrestle with other wild beasts – but also to recognise the seductive murmur of the siren serpent that led Demas to fall in love with the world and to turn away from serving You, and Judas to pin his hopes on agendas that were never Yours. There are many fierce beasts, Lord, and many people have fallen prey; many whose hearts have exchanged truth for a lie and fickle flattery that embraces dark and shifting shadows. You warned us that in the last days, deceitfulness would arise in many forms – not least when good people take on board beliefs that Heaven cannot own. Yet You choose to allow the wheat and the tares to grow together, and You ask that we remain true to our calling and constant in Your constancy. Fickleness and deception soon harden into a shameful constancy that is deeply resistant to the love notes and warnings that You send. Spare me from the fate of Lot's wife, casting her gaze backwards when You are summoning me upward and onward! Let my heart not crystallise in regret like ‘a pillar of salt standing as a monument to my unbelief! (Wisdom 10:7) Oh God, will You set free many hearts that flit and flutter, and are so easily misled? Draw us instead to a place of constancy in You.

THE HOLY SPIRIT MAKES US HOLY – A MESSAGE TO HISTORY'S MOST DEFILED GENERATION James 1:26-27 – If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless. 27 – Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.  PURPOSE OF PENTECOST? 1.     POWER - Acts 1:8 - 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” 2.     REVELATION - Acts 2:17-18 -17 “‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; 18 even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. 3.     HOLINESS - Acts 2:37-38, 40 - “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit…“Save yourselves from this perverse/wicked generation.” GOAL = A NEW VISION for Holiness and the Holy Spirit's work in our lives A.W. Tozer – Holy Spirit makes us holy Name? Power Spirit?? NO – The HOLY SPIRIT Porn Stats 1978 vs. 1985 – 5% vs. 55% Viewed hardcore porn video / 2022?? John Bevere – 2/3 of men IN CHURCH are watching porn regularly 1/3 of women50% of the pastors POWERLESS – Kryptonite – Defiled Church Billy Graham – “If we lose THIS BATTLE, we lose the battle of the Christian life” 20th Century = Explosion of Perversion – the occult (sex magick), film, video, the internet, (technology), abortion, homosexuality, human trafficking, pedophilia, freedom=bondage Matthew 27:37 - 37 For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Sinfulness Stage 1 - Genesis 3 – Fall of Adam/Eve (Satan) Sinfulness Stage 2 - Genesis 6 – Fall of the Watchers – effect?? ManyEFFECTS - Sexual perversion/lust/gross immorality/homosexuality/beastiality/abortion •       Quote: “We were sinners because of the Fall of Adam, but the Fallen Watchers taught mankind to be even better sinners” – Heiser Genesis 6:1-8 - 1 When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. 3 Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.” 4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown. 5 The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. 7 So the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. Two Views about WHO the “Sons of God” were:1.     Angels – Who? 2nd Temple Judaism, the Apostles, Early Church2.    Humans – Who? (called the “Sethite View”) - 1st suggested by Julius Africanus (3rd Century), Augustine (5th century)It really wasn't until the 5th century that the so-called “Sethite View” (i.e. that the 'sons of God' were humans and not angels) was INVENTED.The evidence from history is insurmountable that the Sethite view is wrong.  That the Sethite interpretation was a late innovation and not the Apostolic understanding (or the historic Jewish one).A. New Testament writers who refer to these angels in Genesis 6:1-4 The Apostle Peter - 2 Peter 2:4-5 - 4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into tartarus (the abyss) and committed/delivered them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; 5 if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; The Apostle Jude (Jesus' brother) - Jude 1:6-7 - 6 And the angels who did not stay/keep in their proper domain, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day— 7 just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire. B. Early Church leaders who affirm that the Sons of God were in fact angels and whose offspring were the Nephilim/giants.   Clement of Rome (1st century, the Apostle Peter's Disciple) Justin Martyr (2nd century) - The angels transgressed this appointment and were captivated by love of women. And they begat children [nephilim/giants], who are those who are called demons. (AD160)     Athenagoras (2nd century) But some outraged both the constitution of their nature and the oversight entrusted to them. ...These angels fell into impure love of virgins and were subjugated by the flesh. ...Those who are called giants were begotten from these lovers of virgins. (AD175) Irenaeus (2nd century) Clement of Alexandria - The angels who had obtained the superior rank, having sunk into pleasures, told to the women the secrets that had come to their knowledge. In contrast, the rest of the angels concealed them, or rather, reserved them for the coming of the Lord. (late 2nd/early 3rd century) Tertullian - If it is on account of the angels—those whom we read of as having fallen from God and from heaven because of lusting after females—we can presume that such angels yearned after bodies that were already defiled and were relics of human lust.  (late 2nd/early 3rd cent. – gave us the word “Trinity”) Ambrose (4th century) Lactantius (4th century, tutor of Emperor Constantine) C. Well-known Evangelicals who affirm w/ the Early Church that the Sons of God were angelic beings.  A.W. Pink – Reformed theologian  Donald Grey Barnhouse – Presbyterian theologian, pastor Henry Morris – author of The Genesis Flood, founder of CRI (Creation Research Institute) Merril F. Unger – Dallas Theological Seminary professor, theologian Arnold Fruchtenbaum – Messianic leader, Dallas Theological Seminary-trained Hal Lindsey – author of “The Late Great Planet Earth John MacArthur Pastor Chuck Smith – Calvary Chapel Dr. Michael Heiser – OT scholar, Ancient Near East language scholar Chuck Missler – Bible teacher I Corinthians 6:9-13, 18-20 (3 out of 9 in the list!)9 Or do you not know that the unrighteouswill not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. 12 “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything. 13 “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body….  18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sina person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.”6.     Confess – James 5:16 – To each other, MAY be healed7.     FLEE - 1 Cor 6:18 (Tolerate?)8.     Believe holiness is possible (1 Pet 1:16 – “Be holy…”)I Peter 1:15-16 – “but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 For it is written, “Be holy even as I am holy” Ephesian 5:3 - But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people9.     Get the Holy Spirit working more in your life (“eagerly pursue…”) for HOLINESS

What exactly is purgatory? Why does it make sense? Where can we find it in the Bible? In Church history? Isn't it just a medieval invention? Didn't it go completely sideways and caused the Protestant Reformation? All of these burning questions, and more, this week as Dr. Salkeld takes us on a deep dive into the roots and reasons for purgatory, specifically through an Evangelical Christian lens. In Church, it's vaguely to talk about dreaming big dreams for your life. Is vision a Biblical term? What does it mean to have a vision for you life, and what sort of a vision should we seek to be living out? In this episode, Ryan and Jake explore Nehemiah 10 and talk about Gospel vision for our daily lives.

Andi latest release, "Friendship, It's Complicated" begins with a very venerable chapter on her mother wound, even including a few words written by her mother!! Such freedom and healing can happen as we look back and address our past--not staying there long enough to dwell & relive it, but glancing back to acknowledge and pinpoint the root of our pain! We often credit the Transcendentalists with introducing a revolutionary new appreciation for nature into American spirituality when they claimed that God could be found in the forests, mountains, and fields. In Church in the Wild: Evangelicals in Antebellum America (Harvard University Press, 2019), Brett Grainger reconsiders the history of the years leading up to the Civil War. He argues that it was not the Transcendentalists but evangelical revivalists who transformed the everyday religious life of Americans and spiritualized the natural environment. https://youtu.be/xY5BMLYyG7Q God will give you what you want 1 Samuel 8 People make demands 5 and said to him, “Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.”The demand of Israel was that they wanted a king. They wanted to be like the rest of the nations. They wanted someone to rule them. To tell that what to do and how to live. They saw the other nations Edom, Moab, etc with Kings and said “we want to be like that” The issue was their heart. They blamed Samuel because his sons weren’t righteous. They have just come out of some huge military losses- it must be a king that is the problem- It can’t be US.How can we be the problem of our destruction- it must be who RULES us. FAMILIAR???Rulership isn’t the end all be all of the success of the individual. A president may be powerful, but try to get a 2 year old to stop crying in a restaurant. People make demands! On God- make him into an eternal genie and MAD if they DON’T GETGive me a job, give me a spouse, give me kids, give me money, heal me, Do THIS in my life God. I know whats good for me and what I’m going to need is for you to do THISTypically these demands are self centered for comfort and significance So what happens? God tells the truth’ 9 Now therefore, heed their voice. However, you shall solemnly forewarn them, and show them the behavior of the king who will reign over them.” Read v 11-18You want a king? This is whats going to happen- He’s going to exploit your sons, he’s going to serve himself, he’s going to exploit your daughters, he’s going to take the best parts of your fields, your increase, and take all your everything to serve himself, PLUS a tenth of all you have. Aaand then you’ll cry out to me and I’m not going to listen. The people had rejected Samuel and would reject God and whatever king they asked forThe problem wasn’t who ruled them- the problem was the heart of the people. The were a disobedient self serving complaining people who didn’t want to submit to anyone Let God be your King- He always wanted to be Israel’s KingGod never intended to Israel to have an earthly king forever. HE wanted to be their king. HE wanted to rule them.Deuteronomy 10:17 For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality nor takes a bribe.Earthly Kings and leaders will always let you down because God never intended for them to care for you the way that HE can care for you People ask for someone to rule them, and then those broken rulers take advantage of them, and they get upset with God, when God originally told you that you wouldn’t like it.This plays out in American politics- People want a president until they see the flaws of the President and then they want a new one. THE PRESIDENT CAN NEVER SATISFY.In Sales- prayed for promotion- wanted influence and recognition. Made less- worked harder People don’t listen 19 Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, “No, but we will have a king over us, 20 that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.”This is people. People can hear the audible voice of God telling them NOT do something or that they SHOULDN’T do something and they completely disregard it. You can tell someone till you are blue in the face the dangers of something, they don’t care. They will do what they want. In Church-don’t sin, be w that person, take that job, moveJudges 21:25 In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes. Prov 19:20 Listen to counsel and receive instruction, That you may be wise in your latter days.Matthew 11:15 He who has ears to hear, let him hear! God Gives them what they want 21 And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he repeated them in the hearing of the Lord. 22 So the Lord said to Samuel,

SHOW NOTES FOR EPISODE 080: The Cry for Revival Pt. 4   Welcome to Episode 080 of the “Awakening with Nathanael Wolf” podcast and radio broadcast.   Are you hungry for more of the Holy Spirit?  Do you long for revival?   In this week’s episode of our latest podcast series “The Cry for Revival” Nathanael Wolf recounts stories of his experiences in the Argentine Revival and prays for an increased spiritual hunger in your life.   Notable episode quotes: “For the Church was not an organization merely, not a movement, but a walking incarnation of Spiritual energy. And she accomplished within a few brief years such prodigies of moral conquest as to leave us wholly without an explanation—apart from God. In short, the Church began in power, moved in power and moved just as long as she had power. When she no longer had power she dug in for safety and sought to conserve her gains. But her blessings were like the manna… In Church history every return to New Testament power has marked a new advance somewhere, a fresh proclamation of the gospel, an upsurge of missionary zeal; and every diminution [reduction] of power has seen the rise of some new mechanism for conservation and defense… if we are to advance we must have power.” -A.W. Truth has to be kept in tension otherwise it messes up the whole lifestyle. It's normal to elevate one and dimish another. In Church we tend to swing either all about the fruit (Character) or all about the gifts (Charisma) of the Spirit. On this episode we see how Jesus balanced both gifts and the fruit of the Spirit and how we as His body are called to share His fragrance to this world.
