Daniel Mahncke and Shawn O'Malley break down Nike (ticker: NKE), the global leader in athletic footwear and apparel. With a legacy built on innovation, iconic athlete endorsements, and a brand that resonates across generations, Nike has long been a dominant force in the sportswear industry. But after years of consistent success, the company is now navigating through one of its toughest stretches in decades, facing slowing sales, margin pressure, and growing competition from younger, more trendy brands. In this episode, you'll learn why Nike's once-flawless growth story has recently hit turbulence, how its shift toward direct-to-consumer impacted its wholesale relationships, what the brand is doing to win back market share and reignite innovation, why CEO Elliott Hill is refocusing the company on core sports categories, and whether this could be the reset Nike needs to stage a long-term comeback — plus a whole lot more. "Running is for everyone and that's so important for me as a person. One of the coolest things about the marathon is you could be running on the same course as people breaking world records. You have trained differently but you have put so much of yourself into it. You're not running a marathon alone – your spouse, children, co-workers or friends know that you've been training really hard and given up a lot to make it to the start line, push through the marathon and get to the finish. That's truly really important to me...Finding running looks different for everyone." In less than four years of marathoning, Gabi Rooker has been a rising star for the U.S. Last year, she was the fourth American at the 2023 Chicago Marathon with an impressive 2:24:35 personal best. She went on to finish 19th at the U.S. Olympic Trials. With a background in competitive gymnastics, Gabi has taken to the roads super well since her marathon debut in 2021. She spent time elevating her training as part of the Dreamweaver program, which was a program created by Nike to support female athletes aiming for the Olympic Trials qualifying time of 2:37 – .all while balancing her career as a physician assistant in Minneapolis. The performance in Chicago was so good that she signed a pro contract with Nike ahead of the Olympic Trials. In this episode, we unpack her race in Orlando but also how she's adjusted to a part-time role as a physician's assistant and being a professional runner. She shares a bit about her training and preparation heading into Chicago and what part of her story has resonated with the masses. On this episode, we talked about: Understanding where I come from Knowledge truly is power Infuse self-worth and love Thinking outside of the box Growth is never linear We attract who we are Finding more opportunities to grow  Being my best at delivering service to others How Nike yoga was launched Growth happens in the unfamiliar It is okay to say I need help Trusting our own self Diving into a world of service Show up and do the work You deserve the best of the best   "I'm so grateful for the pain, I'm so grateful for the challenges, I'm so grateful for the lessons because that made me feel like I deserve more things"   "Allowing time to grow us, knowing that we have to go through the labels and the layers and each one needs the other one to become what it is and what's supposed to be"   "The first thing is to know yourself and the first step to really knowing yourself is getting quiet to really hear what you need"   About Branden:  In 2002, Branden Collinsworth was broke, homeless, and a high school dropout. Destined for either prison or death, Branden instead made the decisive decision to change his life and also his heart.   After creating Real Results Fitness, an award-winning chain of high-performance gyms in Las Vegas, becoming an internationally renowned performance coach, and receiving his Master's in positive psychology from UPenn, Branden walked away from it all.   From 2016-2020, Branden lived in Peru, Bali, Thailand, and India, where he dove deep into the study of yoga, indigenous plant medicine, Osteo-Thai massage, and Muay Thai kickboxing. Inspired by his travels, Branden became fiercely passionate about humanitarian work and giving back to the places that gave him so much.  In 2016 he launched Warrior Retreats: An 16-day physical and spiritual rite of passage for leaders in Peru.   He also works as the global director for The Tropical Pathology and Infectious Disease Association, a humanitarian nonprofit based in Peru that helps minority students get into medical school.   In 2018 he was chosen by the Indian government as the US ambassador of yoga, spending ten days in Kerala, India, learning about yoga and its origins.   In 2019 Branden collaborated with Nike to launch Nike Yoga - Nike's first yoga-inspired performance apparel. He also co-created the first comprehensive yoga program on the Nike Training Club app.   In 2020 he became one of the Founding Experts for Mined. The first digital emotional platform that is rooted in amplifying emotional wellbeing and human pathos.   He currently lives on the island of Oahu, where he is finishing his first book: Embodied Love - A 30-day Journey of Self Love   You can support and follow Branden at:  https://brandencollinsworth.doyoumined.com/ @brandencollinsworth   Let's connect over on Instagram: @Johnny.Elsasser

He speaks specifically about the challenges of localizing and growing an established foreign brand decades before the dramatic rise of eCommerce.Asked how differently such an experience would be if he were to launch in today's market, Jeff refers to the quote: “There are no overstored markets, only under-merchandised ones.” In other words, successfully establishing a brand in any foreign market largely comes down to telling a compelling story, particularly via visual merchandising, around one's product.Jeff gives a few examples from his career to illustrate the power of “compelling merchandise, attractively presented”. He highlights his work on Nike's first-ever campaign in Japan, which was so successful that elements of the campaign were adapted by other brands on a global scale. Key Quotes:“For anyone who works in retail, the store is company headquarters, and company headquarters is the back office.” “A lot of folks will tell you that you have to change what you do to succeed in Japan, and this is true. But you can't lose the essence of what you are.” “There are no overstored markets, only under-merchandised ones.”

Have you ever wondered how certain people and companies achieve larger-than-life status? Well, today's guest has some theories about what legends are made of, with empirical evidence to back them up! Gair Maxwell has worked with some of the world's most dynamic organizations, including Apple, Caterpillar, NAPA, and Virginia Tech. He has also shared conference stages with some of the world's biggest business icons, such as Richard Branson and Gene Simmons, delivering 80 to 90 presentations every year with global representation from speaker bureaus in Canada and Mexico. A former broadcaster, Gair racked up over 10,000 interviews and more than 30,000 broadcasts in an award-winning radio and television career in his native country of Canada. Today, he is a global authority for helping organizations create iconic brands that attract legions of customers and top talent. In this episode, Gair and Sourdough bond over their mural love for Van Halen, and Gair shares some stories about the people, companies, and communities that he has encountered who were determined to change the rules and compete on their terms. You'll learn how they are creating raving fans, attracting top talent, enjoying substantial growth, and establishing themselves as what Gair defines as a Category of One. Fundamentally, Gair believes that you can't create a legend without a story. Deep down, you have to come to grips with your own story and truly live it! Tune in today for some poignant advice on how to do just that.   Key Points From This Episode: Gair emphasizes the power of virtual technology like Zoom, LinkedIn, and YouTube.  When Gair's love for Van Halen started and why he calls them the “soundtrack of his life.” The importance of communicating through feeling in a data-driven, KPI-obsessed society. How to live up to your potential by understanding that everyone has a story to tell. Gair reflects on his career journey and his lifelong fascination with all things ‘legendary'. Why he believes that a story either happens to you or you have to make one happen. The origin of legends and how to decode their enduring appeal to create great brands. Find out how Gair got into TV and radio broadcasting in Canada in the first place. His transition from broadcasting to business; creating a story grounded in emotional truth. Why your story has to be about more than “making a buck” if you want to build a legacy. Gair highlights the value of embracing the wisdom of uncertainty. Scott explains to Gair where his pseudonym, Sourdough, comes from. Setting yourself apart as an essential component of success; the enduring value of curiosity. Why the human qualities and characteristics of someone legendary are so subjective. The importance of embracing a growth mindset; be unafraid to experiment! How Gair believes mortality intersects with legacy; how do you want to be remembered? The role that golf has played in Gair's life and what it taught him, beyond the obvious.  Learn about Gair's upcoming book, Big Little Legends, being released in November 2021. How the COVID-19 pandemic has only increased consumers' appetites for authenticity. Gair's advice for big businesses struggling with authenticity: ask yourself, who are you beyond your goods and services? How Nike and Starbucks stood the test of time by being more than sneakers and coffee. Why Gair believes it isn't metrics and logic that makes a business a success; it's art. The importance and opportunity of “putting a human face in the digital space.” Gair reiterates the value of curiosity; how are legends created, why does it matter, and what does it mean to you? In this episode, Jayme will continue his conversation with Stephen Trutter, the President of Ideal Practices and an experienced startup dentistry expert who has been a part of 650+ startups. Stephen has been instrumental in the acquisition of half a billion dollars in dental financing for dental startups all over America. They will dive into the R in the KRG framework which represents what a practice is Known for, Remembered by, and what they Give. Figuring out the KRG is the single most important thing an associate dentist can do when they're trying to set up a dental startup because it helps in shaping their entire private practice ownership career. The R is crucial in determining how a dental startup owner will be remembered even after they're no longer in the industry. It's about focusing less on equipment, flooring, and operation size, and more on the impact a dental practice can make on a community, because people don't remember equipment and flooring, they remember community  leaders who better the lives of others. In terms of the G in the KRG, an aspiring dental practice owner should ask themselves what they want to give their community. This is something that goes beyond the walls of a practice and a dentist's clinical skills, because it's about what a practice owner supports in their community. A great example of that is TOM Shoes and how their business supports people in need by giving away a pair of shoes for every pair of shoes that is bought. It's going to be another resourceful episode as Jayme and Stephen cover everything about the R and G of the KRG framework that will help any aspiring dental practice owner become a success in the industry.Key Points Discussed:Establishing balance for startup practices (01:02)The things that make practice owners happy in their ownership (03:00)What are you going to be remembered by within the community? (08:40)All the decisions you make for the rest of your career should be aligned with something (15:10)The value of being known more for your values than your products (20:35)How Nike loses when consumers understand the values of TOMS Shoes (23:00)Aiming for a cause that matters to you on a personal level to promote your practice (28:48)If it's not authentic, it will crash and burn (31:04)Aligning your gifts with something that doesn't look good to others when they visualize you, but what makes you feel good and authentic in your community (36:22)Demographics, proper funding, and real estate 101 (43:09)Additional Resources:The StartUp Crew Facebook Group For Associate DentistsIdeal Practices Websitewww.IdealPractices.com/13www.StartupDentistPodcast.com

In this episode of Halftime, I discuss the origins of branding, its definition according to the American Marketing Association, as well as dive deep into the semantics of the word and what it means in the modern era. I also give specific examples of brands in the sports context such as Kentucky Basketball, Oregon Football and the New Zealand All Blacks, as well as discuss the complexity of a college athletic department's brand in relation to an individual program's team brand. How much do brands have to do with a team being picked in the College Football Playoff? I touch on a recent article by ESPN's Heather Dinich and elaborate on the importance of trust and equity when it comes to brands. Lastly, I discuss color, it's signifance in branding and share why there are more important things than a logo when it comes to branding.
