In this episode of the You Are Not Broken podcast, Dr. Kelly Casperson engages with the co-founders of the SheMD podcast Mary Alice Haney and Dr. Aliabadi, discussing their journey in women's health advocacy. They explore the challenges women face with conditions like endometriosis and PCOS, the importance of education in healthcare, and the need for better diagnosis and treatment options. The conversation highlights the systemic issues in women's health and the role of podcasts in empowering women to advocate for their health. In this conversation, the speakers delve into the complexities of PCOS and endometriosis, discussing the importance of accurate diagnosis, the role of insulin resistance, and the need for innovative solutions in women's health. They emphasize the significance of validating patients' experiences and the impact of education in empowering women to advocate for their health. The discussion also covers hormone replacement therapy, addressing common myths and misconceptions, and highlights the necessity of treating both PCOS and endometriosis for better health outcomes. Takeaways The SheMD podcast was born out of a desire to help women navigate health issues. Endometriosis is a common yet often misdiagnosed condition affecting many women. Education is key in empowering women to advocate for their health. Many women experience chronic pelvic pain without a proper diagnosis. The healthcare system often dismisses women's health concerns, leading to delayed treatment. Laparoscopic surgery is the gold standard for treating endometriosis. Robotic technology could revolutionize women's health care. Women need to be informed about their health conditions to seek appropriate care. The emotional toll of chronic health issues can lead to depression. Advocacy and awareness are crucial in improving women's health outcomes. 75% of women with PCOS are undiagnosed. PCOS and endometriosis often coexist. Insulin resistance is a key factor in PCOS. Validation of symptoms is crucial for patients. Education can empower women to advocate for their health. Hormone replacement therapy can be beneficial for women with PCOS. Diet and exercise alone may not suffice for PCOS management. Innovative platforms can help diagnose and manage PCOS. Women often feel dismissed by healthcare providers. Understanding the metabolic aspects of PCOS is essential. In this conversation, Dr. Kelly Casperson discusses a significant study on the effects of transdermal testosterone therapy on mood and cognitive symptoms in peri- and postmenopausal women. She emphasizes the importance of addressing hormonal changes and their impact on women's mental health, particularly during menopause. The study reveals that testosterone therapy can lead to improvements in mood and cognitive function, challenging the notion that there is insufficient data on testosterone's benefits for women. Dr. Casperson also critiques the study's limitations and calls for further research in this area, while engaging with her audience on related questions and concerns.Takeaways Testosterone therapy can improve mood and cognitive symptoms in women. The study involved 510 women with persistent low libido and mood symptoms. Mood improvements were more significant than cognitive improvements. Testosterone does not drop off a cliff with menopause; it declines gradually. Hormonal changes during menopause can lead to increased risk of depression and cognitive impairment. Testosterone therapy may be a safer alternative to SSRIs for mood issues in perimenopausal women. The study highlights the need for more research on testosterone's effects in women. Libido is closely linked to mood; improving one can enhance the other. Transdermal testosterone is generally safe and easy to administer. ADDYI is for premenopausal women with acquired, generalized hypoactive (low) sexual desire disorder who have not had problems with low sexual desire in the past, and who have low sexual desire no matter the type of sexual activity, the situation or the sexual partner. Your risk of severe low blood pressure and fainting is also increased if you take certain prescription, over the counter or herbal medications, or have liver problems. Low blood pressure and fainting can happen when you take ADDYI even if you don't drink alcohol or take other medicines. Do not take if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in ADDYI. Max Lugavere discusses his journey into researching dementia prevention and the importance of lifestyle factors in maintaining brain health. He emphasizes the need for early intervention and the identification of biomarkers that can indicate risk for cognitive decline. The conversation also touches on the influence of the alcohol and food industries on public health guidelines, the role of physicians in prevention, and the power of individual agency in making healthy choices. In this conversation, Max Lugavere and I discuss various topics related to brain health, nutrition, and lifestyle. They touch on the confusion surrounding processed foods and veganism, the role of cholesterol in health, the importance of exercise for brain health, and the potential benefits of hormone replacement therapy. Max shares his personal experience with his mother's battle with dementia and emphasizes the need for individuals to take control of their own health and advocate for themselves. Takeaways Dementia prevention requires early intervention and the identification of biomarkers that can indicate risk for cognitive decline. The alcohol and food industries have significant influence on public health guidelines, which may not always prioritize prevention. Physicians may not be incentivized to advocate for prevention, and the responsibility for wellness ultimately lies with individuals. There is no one-size-fits-all diet for brain health, but diets low in ultra-processed foods and added sugar tend to be beneficial. The conversation around prevention is growing, but public health statistics show that there is still work to be done. Processed foods can be a source of confusion and stress, leading to unhealthy dietary choices. While veganism can be a personal choice, making health claims and demonizing animal-sourced foods without strong evidence is misleading. Cholesterol is often misunderstood, and the risks associated with it may be exaggerated. LDL cholesterol should be viewed as a check engine light rather than a definitive indicator of health. Exercise is crucial for brain health and can help prevent and slow the progression of conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can have potential benefits for brain health, and the risks are often overblown. Individuals should take control of their own health, stay informed, and be open to updating their knowledge based on new evidence. https://www.instagram.com/maxlugavere/ Documentary Little Empty Boxes https://www.maxlugavere.com/ Thanks to our sponsor Sprout Pharmaceuticals.
