Why does the modern pursuit of happiness so often leave people feeling lost? In this episode of The Lectern, John Vervaeke speaks with cognitive scientist Mark Miller about the emerging science of happiness and the deeper architecture of the human mind. Drawing from predictive processing theory, the conversation explores how human beings function as epistemic agents who constantly construct models of the world and themselves. The discussion examines why common cultural narratives about happiness are often misleading and why genuine flourishing requires understanding the underlying cognitive processes that shape perception, motivation, and meaning. Mark introduces the framework behind his Lectern course Generations of Joy, which integrates cognitive science, philosophy, contemplative practice, and modern neuroscience. Mark Miller is a cognitive scientist specializing in predictive processing, wellbeing, and the cognitive science of happiness. He teaches in the psychology and cognitive science programs at the University of Toronto and conducts research with the Center for Consciousness and Contemplative Studies at Monash University. He is also affiliated with Hokkaido University where he contributes to interdisciplinary work on artificial intelligence, neuroscience, and human nature. The gifted London DJ and curator goes big on bass futurism. "To pull a thread." This old English adage means to follow a small detail that might unravel into something larger and more significant. It's also the inspiration behind London artist mi-el's NTS Radio show, and a neat way of understanding her approach as a DJ. Take mi-el's rich archive of mixes. From NTS to The Trilogy Tapes, they show her to be a deeply personal selector and curator, pushing past functionality into something more expressive, narrative and often political. A show about Refugee Week? Afrofuturist world-making? Interlocking systems of domination? All material is putty in her hands. Now based in Berlin, mi-el is simply a wicked club DJ. In just a few years she's played Panorama Bar, De School and FOLD, as well as festivals including Waking Life, Terraforma and Field Maneuvers. Alongside peers and predecessors like Josey Rebelle, she represents a new generation of Black British artists reinventing the wheel, and as we mark the beginning of UK Black History Month, no other candidate felt more fitting. RA.1007 shows why. The 55-minute session is a deft balancing act of depth and playfulness, humour and heaviness, rooted in club intensity and the futurism of the UK hardcore continuum. It's firm confirmation that, in mi-el's hands, the art of the DJ mix is alive and well. @miellllllll Find the tracklist and interview at ra.co/podcast/1026

For decades, Section 8 of the Clayton Act--which prohibits two competing corporations from sharing a common director--was rarely enforced by the U.S. antitrust agencies, and corporations were for the most part left to regulate themselves. In this episode, Alicia Downey and Sergei Zaslavsky talk to antitrust practitioner Diane Hazel about how the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission have recently been focusing a lot more attention on identifying Section 8 violations based on an expansive view of the scope of the statute. Listen to this episode to learn about recent enforcement trends and what companies can do to avoid potentially unlawful interlocking directorates. Omolola Ijeoma Ogunyemi's novel Jollof Rice and Other Revolutions: A Novel in Interlocking Stories (Amistad 2022), is a moving and unforgettable collection of stories that span a lifetime. Four young girls rebel against a boarding school principal and the aftermath stays with them throughout their lives in this complex weaving of relationships and customs. Stories about immigration, powerful mothers and strong-willed daughters lead into stories about raising boys, searching for home, and seeking happiness. Ogunyemi references Nigerian history and traditions prior to the changes enforced by the missionaries, and considers a dystopian future, but the friends continue to love and count on each other across the years and the miles. Omolola Ijeoma Ogunyemi was born and raised in Ibadan, Nigeria. A finalist for the 2009 PEN/Studzinski Award, her stories have been published in New Writing from Africa 2009 (a collection of PEN/Studzinski Award finalists' stories), Ploughshares, and mentioned in The Best American Short Stories 2018. In this episode of The Forum Podcast, Alli Strong-Martin (Lifeworks Services, Inc.) and Ashley Oolman (Lifeworks Services, Inc.) lead listeners through a discussion about how ableism and white supremacy interlock to hinder inclusion. Though one of the most intersectional protected classes, people with disabilities are often kept from full participation in communities and workplaces due to lingering bias and unaddressed discrimination. For disabled people who carry additional marginalized identities, these gaps become even more vast. This leads to disproportionate rates of unemployment and poverty amongst 61 million people living in the US who have a disability. In this podcast, we uncover the ways in which white, non-disabled bodies and minds have hoarded power in organizations for decades, and how we can advocate for universal policies and practices that increase workplace inclusion for all, ending the cycle of white supremacy and ableism at work. Learning Outcomes Confront complacency in ableism and begin to dismantle personal bias contributing to disability exclusion Learn to recognize the intersection of multiple systems of oppression Discover opportunities to advance intersectional inclusion in the workplace --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/fwi/support

Our modern world is full of large, complex systems - so many, in fact, that we often don't notice them until something goes wrong, or we're trying to work within a system ourselves to bring change about. Those systems aren't discrete entities - they overlap and interlock, adding even more complexity. In this episode, we talk about what agility might look like in the context of a large institution trying to accomplish a specific mission-oriented goal, and how a set of interlocking complex systems make that agility difficult. The sector is higher education, but the underlying ideas are applicable to many sectors. Our guest in exploring these ideas is Jim Woodell, who works with higher education institutions as they pursue what's called in that world “engagement” - the way in which the university reaches out beyond its own walls to the community or region around them.

In this episode we hear a little bit from my friend Paul Sveum. Paul was my instructor at Jack Mountain Bushcraft School five years ago and has a ton of experience with outdoor living skills, and flyfishing in particular. Paul is a Registered Maine Guide licensed by the state in the recreation and fishing categories. He has guided extended canoeing, backpacking, and snowshoeing trips in Wisconsin, Minnesota, New Hampshire, and Maine in a variety of areas including the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, as well as numerous other locations off the beaten path. He has also guided numerous overnight trips focusing on bushcraft, survival, and local naturalist studies around the South shore of Lake Superior. We had a great chat about ecology, and how learning more about the plant and animal life around you makes you a more effective and aware outdoorsperson. I hope you enjoyed the show as much as we enjoyed recording it. Full disclosure, Paul and I were joined by his one-and-a-half-year-old daughter for this recording, and she makes a few unexpected appearances. It's a thrilling time on the SquadCast this week, as your tenacious team of toysters recaps some of the exciting news coming out of the recent ToyFair convention in New York! Then the topic turns to everyone's favorite system of interlocking construction units, known more commonly as LEGO's! Everything is pretty awesome as we banter about bricks, and the crew even shows off a few of their own vintage and custom creations. Along the way, Rick divulges some valuable tips, like: how to eat an elephant, proper parenting skills (BUY LEGOS), and how to feel a bag like a pro. Frank waxes nostalgic about his return to the Holy Brick, Rob pines for a Yarna d'al' Gargan action figure (for the 6 obvious reasons), and Patti steps carefully around the conversation, avoiding all the verbal bricks on the floor.
