Today's guest is a climbing icon and legend: the great Beth Rodden. Beth was a youth national comp champ who went on to become one of the greatest female climbers of her time, with important first free ascents of El Cap and single-pitch trad test pieces such as Meltdown, a 5.14c crack that many say is harder and took a decade before it was repeated. Her new book is called A Light Through the Cracks. But first we talk about the elusive “all-around” climber, with Bronwyn Hodgins at the top of mind. What does it take to be considered a great all-around climber? And is that the future for what we demand of our top-end climbers? Today's final bit comes courtesy of the extremely talented Beezer (aka Mason Earle) with the track Loggersports. In this episode, Chris Rivers and Jacob Cook discuss Jacob’s journey in discovering what it means to be an Authentic Man. They talk about how Jacob's understanding of responsibility and the force of community on his life broke his relentless pursuit of “power” and “importance.” Here are also some other key concepts Jacob communicates during this episode: 1. We can be doing all the right things, but still feel empty. Jacob realized his heart was not where it needed to be and he was relying on his own strength. All of his attempts at gaining power were to bring glory to himself, not God. Is there anything you are doing that is causing you to rely on your own strength instead of God’s strength? If so, what next steps could you take to move towards God in that area? 2. Most men tend towards passivity or self-reliance. Self-reliance creeps in when we try to be responsible for everything in our own power and try to manage things we are not really responsible for. In what ways do you personally struggle with passivity and self-reliance? 3. The only way to truly be powerful is allowing God to be powerful through us. When we allow Him control, it leads to true life change and maturity in our walk with Christ. Where have you seen God’s power manifested in your life or the life of another authentic man? What stands out to you about the change that you have experienced or have observed in someone else? 4. When we spread ourselves too thin and try to be responsible for all of the people and situations around us, we miss the opportunity to be truly known by others. This aspect of community is crucial in our growth as men and as believers. What does Biblical community look like for you? Read Galatians 6:1-3, Acts 2:42-43 and share some key ideas that stand out to you in those two passages. Where do you need to move in this area? Our season of spy films continues with this very strange parody. It’s 1967 and those Bond movies are making money, let’s jump in on that. Well, the first thing we need is a Connery. Hey, Sean Connery has a brother. Let’s call him? Does he act? Does it matter? Our friend Jacob Cook returns for this episode and we’re wondering if he’ll ever return. This is a bad, bad movie. As Paul says, “The main character’s super power is knowing what the hell is going on.” The film was originally titled, Operation Kid Brother, but in some releases it is called OK Connery because they just gave up on trying to be clever. What’s in the briefcase in Pulp Fiction may be a better discussion than this particular film. According to Wikipedia, the Moneypenny actress made more money for this than all the other Bond films. The Italian Dudley Moore? It’s Alvaro Vitali. And he’s not in this film, or it might be funny. Jacob compares this film to the last parody we watched with him, Our Man Flint. Neil Connery was a plasterer and an affordable Connery. Our hero practices the secret Tibetan art of hypnosis. Paul wonders if it is related to Calgon. Chris confuses Terrence Mann with Terrence Malick. We here at Film Frown apologize for this mistake, Mr. Mann. We love Critters and do not enjoy the sleepy films of Malick. Seeing the portable projector in the film, Chris says he’s 5 years sober from his addiction to woot!. Jacob quotes Insane Clown Posse for the first time in his life we’re guessing. “Magnet’s, how do they work?” The crime syndicate is Thanatos, not Thanos. While Paul says the music in the film is overpowering, Jacob points out that it was made by famous composer Ennio Moricone. Let’s avoid getting in trouble with copyright, but we’ll have a line referencing Ian Fleming. It confuses us all and we discuss this a lot. “Pull the levers!” is this movie’s “Blankets!” Curiously, United Artists released this film and the Bond films. So did they reuse the outfits in Starcrash? So in this film, Neil Connery is Scottish and does not, at all, sound like it. In Highlander his brother plays a Spanish character and does not, at all, sound like it. Thanks for listening! Thanks to Jacob for watching this atrocious film and teaching us the Dolph Lundgren nipple tolerance theory. Next up, a Neil Breen film. Support Film Frown on Patreon

From the opening frames, a recent movie by Canadian adventure film maker Heather Mosher lets viewers know exactly what they're in for. World class rock climber Kevin Jorgeson mugs at the camera and chuckles while his partner Jacob Cook holds up a bloody finger. This particular pitch on the Tom Egan Memorial Route in the Bugaboos of British Columbia was first climbed by Will Stanhope and Matt Segal back in 2015. Blood On The Crack is a pencil-thin fissure on a sheer vertical slab of granite. It's the perfect project for any aspiring rock climber or an adventure film maker. I first met Heather Mosher seven years ago when she was just a volunteer at the Banff Mountain Film Festival. A few weeks ago she sent me link to watch her latest film, a nine-minute short called Blood On The Crack. Let's just say I loved it. So got her on the phone to ask her a few questions about her life and career in film making. Adventure Film Maker Heather Mosher “Going to the Banff Mountain Film Festival in 2012 kind of there's a bit of a spark even though I didn't know it at the time,” Mosher told me in our interview. “I already knew I wanted to be a photographer. I started working in the photography industry in Vancouver and then as I moved out of that full time job the thing that sparked the filmmaking direction was going to Banff and being like ‘I want to make an adventure documentary.” So I've met up with local filmmakers and went, ‘Teach me about sound!' And they said, ‘Sure come on over to our studio and we'll show you our microphones. And they taught me basically how to edit. And that's what's taken me to where I am now.” Blood on the Crack (trailer) from Heather Mosher on Vimeo. Heather Mosher is a rising young creative in a new generation of adventure film makers. Taking her passion for storytelling and life in the outdoors she's producing compelling movies that are worth watching and definitely worth talking about. In this episode of the Joy Trip Project we discuss the process of making an adventure documentary and how this young producer got to work with one of the most sought after professional rock climbers in the world. Nope. We’re not watching the cheese-filled CBS show, we’re watching Helen Slater fight Faye Dunaway in a very strange film from the 80s. arkOS creator Jacob Cook and the talented artist & developer Jen Montes join the guys to review a piece of super hero history, Supergirl. Chris watched way too many documentaries like You Will Believe: The Cinematic Saga of Superman to prepare for this show. Meanwhile, Jen watched Supergirl religiously as a child. Like Superman III, Supergirl was panned by reviewers. Also, it did not do well at the box office. Note the poster on the Wikipedia page. There’s something wrong with the Statue of Liberty. “Look at the British Peters!” Shouts Paul. Meaning O’Toole and Cook. Why is that Brenda Vaccaro looking so familiar? Chris live tweeted his viewing, the new version of show notes. Chris confuses who gets shrunk into who in Innerspace. And is this where Kara’s city is? Paul thinks the pocket universe is the inside of Zardoz’s stone head. Paul wonders if the spaceship flight is inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey. Jacob thinks this can’t be anything but a space dildo. Chris thinks Faye Dunaway is wearing the Cybill Shepherd collection from Moonlighting. Jen says “the flying ballet” scene is to remind us that she’s a girl and we all cringe. What’s America like? Truckers. Matt Frewer delivers the worst dialogue as a trucker in a scene where Supergirl meets Max Headroom. We don’t like these writers very much. Jacob wonders why all the A&W product placement. Even on rapist truckers. Next on Law and Order: PZU (Phantom Zone Unit). Gardner guy is also the douchey guy from the first Die Hard film. Paul says there’s more magic in this film, but it is way more boring than Doctor Strange. Paul compares the lengthy flying scenes to the very long Star Trek: The Motion Picture. We have no budget so we’ve dressed all the bad guys like their from THX 1138. Is that a morlock in the Phantom Zone? Nope, it’s Peter O’Toole! Jacob suggests no one can replace Faye Dunaway in this film except maybe Tilda Swinton. Chris argues making the film even worse with Melanie Griffith. Jacob recommends that listeners watch Labyrinth. Then, he says we should review it on the show. Hmm… Jen says you need to check out Barbarella. Paul says he cannot make a better recommendation and jumps on this, well. Chris suggests Electric Booglaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films. In the time since we recorded this, Jacob has launched an awesome way to get your arkOS on, with his new hosted service Skylark. Jen can be found on twitter or github. Thanks to both of them for all the laughs. It’s probably our longest show because we spent 24 minutes laughing. Stay tuned for next season. It’s right around the corner, by the time we post this! Jacob Cook from arkOS is with the guys for part 2 of the discussion on privacy. Jacob says we should trust the investigation techniques we’ve used for years rather than collect everyone’s data. Meanwhile, Paul has a great metaphor for online privacy, the front door of your home. We mentioned it in the show notes for the last episode, but we talked about the Last Weeek Tonight video on Edward Snowden in this part. (NSFW) Jacob recommends Citizenfour, the Oscar winning documentary about the Snowden leak while Chris is not as impressed. Watch it on iTunes. Chris recommends The Internet’s Own Boy which you can also watch on iTunes. Trusting websites and companies with our data online is one thing. We also have to trust our friends with whom we share. You send them pictures & information all the time. They could get hacked or use gmail and your data is at risk. Diaspora is a social network that is decentralized. GNUSocial is another decentralized social network. Chris asks Jacob about IndieWebCamp. Suggested examples are jeena.net and brennannovak.com. The government wants a backdoor into every system out there. This would make encryption pointless. Legal or not, many are being forced to unlock phones and decrypt laptops at borders. Legally you can be forced to unlock your phone with touch ID. Nothing leaves the web. You post it. Forever it shall be. “I don’t have anything to hide.” Jacob suggests that you watch Why Privacy Matters. Jacob gives a quick overview on how to get started protecting your privacy. Start with hosting your email somewhere else beside these large data collection companies. A brief discussion of the robot in Starcrash. Or is he the chicken lawyer from Futurama? Your Samsung SmartTV is spying on you? Meanwhile, Barbie is spying on your kids. Lenovo Responds to Superfish issue. Jacob tells us about the new arkOS Connect service. Once again thanks for listening and thanks to our guest for the chat. Be sure to check out Jacob’s arkOS. If you want to hear more from Jacob, have a listen to the Film Frown podcast he was on. This week Chris wanted to talk about privacy so he and Paul invited Jacob Cook the father of arkOS to talk about the importance of confidentiality and better ways to protect yourself online. Subtle Reminder: We have a chat channel on the freenode IRC network you can join during live shows on Thursday nights to interact with us. Or jump in on other days and maybe you run into Chris or Paul. Look for #montrealsauce on freenode or hit the live page on our site. We discuss the spotted history of online payments where Elon Musk’s Paypal was the only choice. Paul & Jacob prefer using stripe when they are developing. Edward Snowden has exposed a number of things about government data collection. The truth is that they cannot provide one case where mass surveillance has stopped an actual terrorist act. Last Week Tonight has an excellnt video on the subject. It’s NSFW. Jacob’s arkOS has a number of ways for you to host your own data. Jacob tells us there are great alternatives out there for every popular app and service, but there’s a learning curve. arkOS is his answer to having an easy solution for everyone, like apps on the app store. Speaking of alternatives, Chris and Paul have had success with Baïkal for syncing contacts and calendars. Chris is excited to try Mumble as an alternative to Skype. Jacob had a Jolla phone to increase his privacy, but recently moved to a new carrier where it wasn’t supported. Jacob & Chris use apps from Open Whisper Systems for encrypted communication on their devices. You can get TextSecure for Android or Signal for iPhone in the various app stores. Encrypting e-mail sounds complex, but there are tutorials everywhere. Read more on ars technia. Chris & Jacob chat a bit about using xdadevelopers forum to try new ROMs on Android and the “hackable nature” of the ecosystem vs. iOS. MightyText Allows you to text from your computer or tablet after syncing with your Android phone. iMessage and WhatsApp are other messaging alternatives they discussed. HTTPS Everywhere is a browser extension/add-on to protect you online. Jacob also uses Ghostery to block all the trackers following you online. Chris cautions that Ghostery will send data to advertisers. Thus, he uses Disconnect. Wait, what do these do? Is Adblock Plus any good or are companies paying ABP not to block? Homeland Security is setting up an office in Silicon Valley. The gents talk SSL encryption. To secure your own sites you can make SSL certificates, but browsers only recognize certificates from a “trusted” authority (in other words a company that takes your money for the certificate). Let’s encrypt is a free service coming in September. arkOS is about being decentralized, your data on your hardware without having to trust some data center. However, ISPs don’t want you to host your own services and some do not give you a static IP address. So, Skylark was born. arkOS on centralized connection. There are now data centers using the micro boards like the Raspberry Pi. You can host things on these microservers. Mininodes is one such service. Special thanks to Jacob for once again coming on to share his time and genius with Paul & Chris. Next episode will be the continuation of the conversation about privacy, sausage and your dXXk pics. On this episode Chris & Paul are joined by Jacob Cook from Citizen Web and the brains behind arkOS. The three shark wranglers are terrified of the future where elderly people are injecting shark brain juice. Jacob treats us all to a fantastic reboot of this film that we would all pay money to see. Want to watch this film (at your own risk)? It’s available for digital rental from the following services: iTunes Google Play Youtube Sony Deep Blue Sea is ranked 19 for the year of 1999 above Galaxy Quest, Three Kings and The Cider House Rules. Paul and IMDB tell us that director Renny Harlin “is the most successful Finnish film director.” He must be a national treasure for his work on Diehard 2 alone. Correction: Chris misspoke! Actor Thomas Jane is in the new (bad) film Vice. He is not in Inherent Vice. Paul decides Bruce Willis is himself, a movie trope. He also wonders if Michael Bay directed this film. Avengers unite! Saffron Burrows’ eyebrows, Samuel L. Jackson and Stellan Skarsgård are in this film prior to joining the Marvel universe. Nobody remembers Tattoo and Fantasy Island. Michael Rapaport has “the gift for gab?” The key failing of Free Willy? No Eminem. Chris is legitimately scared by this film. Zip drives are terrifyingly bad for your data. Jacob says the best actor award goes to the bird played by two actors. One did the parrot sounds and the other did the voice. Why isn’t Samuel L. Jackson going Snakes on a Plane on these sharks? Chris wishes Gilbert Gottfried played the parrot. A live listener who has a rad music blog called Anomaly wonders if the storm in the film is a Sharknado. The sharks destroy all the cameras watching them? Why can’t we be as smart as the sharks and stop giving our data away to corporations? We should use arkOS. How is that large window holding water back in this underwater facility? Is it transparent aluminum? Jacob & Neil deGrasse Tyson are having issues with the science on this film. This movie is no Jurassic Park. Close but no Goldblum. Paul is marketing LL On The Shelf next Christmas. Not to be confused with The Elf on the Shelf. It’s a revenge film like John Wick. Don’t mess with LL’s parrot. Paul thinks LL Cool J based his character on Inigo Montoya. This movie makes a “10 Best” list as well. 10 surprise deaths in blockbuster movies. The terrible secret of this film: the sharks have an eating disorder. The final shark death scene is reminiscent of Revengeofthe.ninja. Thanks again to Jacob Cook for joining the guys on this episode. Hopefully he’ll come back and do more. Or perhaps Jacob and a clever parrot can replace Paul & Chris? Support Film Frown on Patreon

Last week’s guest, Jacob Cook sticks around for another show. You know what that means, quiz time! Jacob is the Mad Max of the Information Highway, who supports open source and decentralization with his amazing projects. Keep reading or listen for more on our guest from Montreal! Chris is inspired by Jacob’s passion for his projects, arkOS and CitizenWeb Project so he asks the tough questions, what’s in Jacob’s future? And, the old man question, what about retirement? Fearing the loss of Net Neutrality and crying in his toque, Chris wonders if Jacob has used any of the mesh networks that are popping up. For example, Hyperboria which is part of Project Meshnet. By the way, you should probably click that Net Neutrality link above. John Oliver will have you in tears. Check out GNU Social or use Quitter to check out a decentralized social network. It’s just as amazing as Twitter. Have a look at Diaspora as well. Paul & Jacob geek out about VPS providers, DigitalOcean and Linode. The greatest random quiz to date on Montreal Sauce: What do they know about Burt Reynolds’ mustache? Who will win? Paul or Jacob? Everyone has a Sean Connery impression. All the Burt Reynolds research led to an awful find, Skullduggery. The world needs more Dom Deluise. Enjoy some bloopers from Cannonball Run. We all fasten on our nerd badges and talk Battlestar Galactica. Intel will be selling a 3D printable robot soon. We need to have Jacob back on the show in the future so we can talk poutine. Find him at arkOS or on twitter, look for peakwinter. Support Montreal Sauce on Patreon

This episode we chat with Jacob Cook who puts the Montreal in Montreal Sauce as he was actually in the city at the time of the recording. Jacob is the handsome brain behind arkOS and CitizenWeb Project. We talk the importance of open source, crowd funding and Big Brother’s sneaky mistress, Big Data. Jacob occasionally uses Tor so obviously he’s under surveillance by the NSA. Jacob suggests an open source real-time communications alternative Talky.io, which is based on the open WebRTC. Google says Hangouts will only support Chrome. Chris grumbles while Jacob warns it is only the beginning. He cites Google dropping the open XMMP protocol which has affected Chris in Canada land. Jacob shares a review on his new Jolla phone. The other alternatives are BlackPhone or the Android ROM Replicant. We discuss the evolution of developers from Nick Burns computer nerd to savvy designers & entrepreneurs building user friendly software and apps. Ease of use trumps privacy concerns every time. Thus, Jacob is working hard to make hosting your own websites, cloud and data very easy with arkOS. DRM does not move us forward. Jacob asks why wouldn’t we want the freedom to read an e-book, listen to a song or watch a film on any device? Open source collaboration means the creation of software we can all use regardless of our system. Jacob vows to never sell out arkOS as he never wants to take power from the users. Chris imagines Jacob starring in HBO’s Silicon Valley. Jacob has a great page called Free the Cloud and Chris asks how Jacob argues against the opposition. We all agree, every success is due to hard work. Kids, work hard and some day you can meet David Hasselhoff and have success like Angie Harmon. Paul and Jacob talk about Jono Bacon’s The Art of Community and the importance of building a community around an open source project. Advice from Jacob & Paul: Less is more, do one thing well and don’t insult people’s intelligence. Be at one with your time traveling hipster. Jacob & Chris talk about a recent survey of arkOS users and the idea of an arkOS data center for folks who have a poor internet speeds or are crippled by Comcast or another evil ISP. Jacob says arkOS will now have a SyncThing plugin as an alternative to OwnCloud. Jacob & Chris contemplate raising more money for arkOS with potato salad. We’ll return next week with Part 2 of our Jacob Cook episode, and Burt Reynolds… mustache? Support Montreal Sauce on Patreon
