Blumhouse is back with a new scary movie, and this time it's not a burnout (cough, “Firestarter,” cough). “The Black Phone” gave us Ethan Hawke as a creepy child abductor and a phone with supernatural (and rather convenient) abilities. “The Good Neighbor” reminded us to never date the sibling of a person you've run over. Facts!

One of the nice things about a mobilized mob of fanatics is ... well, nothing. For the purposes of intelligent discourse and civility, there's nothing cool or helpful about a bunch of heated fanboys rabidly denigrating a new product because it happens to threaten their preferred smartphone. We've talked about this sort of thing before, and now we're talking about it again – this time in the context of Blackphone vs BlackBerry. But we're not using this issue to harp on the dangers of fanaticism; rather, we're seizing on the opportunity to learn something about mobile security. There's also plenty of news to cover in the mainstream smartphone world, of course: Samsung's Galaxy Alpha is here and while it's not packing a big spec wallop, it sure is pretty. Motorola's broken our hearts with an ill-timed event invite. There's new device coverage concerning HTC, Microsoft, Xiaomi, and others. And, improbably, OnePlus has found yet another way to piss off the world. If that's the kind of podcast that brushes your aluminum, then the Pocketnow Weekly is the show for you! Thanks to our new Blackphone review devices, we're already halfway off the grid ... or at least, halfway buried under Post-It notes littered with passwords, which is almost the same thing. Before we get too stealthy, though, we're hosting us a little show. Some of you might know it as the mobile technology podcast that's gone 108 episodes without missing a single week (accurate). Others might know it as the last remaining mobile-only podcast (citation needed). Still others might know it as the podcast where we advertise horse products (totally false). Whatever your own impression of our little corner of the podcastosphere, we call it the Pocketnow Weekly. And on this episode we're talking Blackphone (shhh), LG G3 (more!), Galaxy S5 Sport (dear God why?), a phone-free smartwatch (ditto), touchscreens with texture (ooh!), and so much more™. If that's the kind of podcast that charges your battery pack, then the Pocketnow Weekly is the show for you! This episode we chat with Jacob Cook who puts the Montreal in Montreal Sauce as he was actually in the city at the time of the recording. Jacob is the handsome brain behind arkOS and CitizenWeb Project. We talk the importance of open source, crowd funding and Big Brother’s sneaky mistress, Big Data. Jacob occasionally uses Tor so obviously he’s under surveillance by the NSA. Jacob suggests an open source real-time communications alternative Talky.io, which is based on the open WebRTC. Google says Hangouts will only support Chrome. Chris grumbles while Jacob warns it is only the beginning. He cites Google dropping the open XMMP protocol which has affected Chris in Canada land. Jacob shares a review on his new Jolla phone. The other alternatives are BlackPhone or the Android ROM Replicant. We discuss the evolution of developers from Nick Burns computer nerd to savvy designers & entrepreneurs building user friendly software and apps. Ease of use trumps privacy concerns every time. Thus, Jacob is working hard to make hosting your own websites, cloud and data very easy with arkOS. DRM does not move us forward. Jacob asks why wouldn’t we want the freedom to read an e-book, listen to a song or watch a film on any device? Open source collaboration means the creation of software we can all use regardless of our system. Jacob vows to never sell out arkOS as he never wants to take power from the users. Chris imagines Jacob starring in HBO’s Silicon Valley. Jacob has a great page called Free the Cloud and Chris asks how Jacob argues against the opposition. We all agree, every success is due to hard work. Kids, work hard and some day you can meet David Hasselhoff and have success like Angie Harmon. Paul and Jacob talk about Jono Bacon’s The Art of Community and the importance of building a community around an open source project. Advice from Jacob & Paul: Less is more, do one thing well and don’t insult people’s intelligence. Be at one with your time traveling hipster. Jacob & Chris talk about a recent survey of arkOS users and the idea of an arkOS data center for folks who have a poor internet speeds or are crippled by Comcast or another evil ISP. Jacob says arkOS will now have a SyncThing plugin as an alternative to OwnCloud. Jacob & Chris contemplate raising more money for arkOS with potato salad. We’ll return next week with Part 2 of our Jacob Cook episode, and Burt Reynolds… mustache? Support Montreal Sauce on Patreon

Inbox Zero. It's become something of a myth in the Pocketnow Weekly recording studio ever since we started actively courting listener feedback all those months ago. Skip a listener-mail section here, another one there, and before you know it you've got a mountain of mail it'd take a whole episode to get through. So, just like we did back on episode 076, we're devoting an entire podcast to your missives. We'll hear from people concerned about dual-SIM stigma, people worried about the future of Apple, and people writing to remind us that the automated home isn't as new a concept as we might think. And that's just scratching the surface. Before that, we delve into the meat of the week's news: the new Android Wear platform – and in particular the Moto 360 watch that we're all dying to strap on. All that and more awaits on episode 088 of the Pocketnow Weekly ... so mash those cans on, turn the volume up and rip the knob off: we're here to talk mobile tech, and it's gonna get awesome.Send feedback, questions, and requests to podcast [AT] pocketnow [DOT] com. Topics covered on today's episode of Mind Set Daily "China is cloning pigs on 'an industrial scale'" The Beijing Genomics Institute produces 500 cloned pigs a year, according to a BBC News report, making it the world’s biggest centre for cloning the animals. It is also the world’s largest centre for gene sequencing of species of animals, particularly those that are "cute" or "taste good". The BGI has a gene sequencing centre with 156 machines, huge when compared with Europe’s largest sequencing centre, the Welcome Trust Sanger Institute near Cambridge which has 30. "Blackphone: A secure, encrypted smartphone for the post-Snowden era" Riding on the recent revelations of the NSA’s widescale and seemingly indiscriminate interception of communications, Silent Circle and Geeksphone are teaming up to produce the “Blackphone” — a customized Android smartphone that has the necessary hardware and software to make secure phone calls, send secure messages, store and transfer files securely, and to browse the web privately and securely. "If a Time Traveller saw a Smartphone" A well-educated time traveller from 1914 enters a room divided in half by a curtain. A scientist tells him that his task is to ascertain the intelligence of whoever is on the other side of the curtain by asking whatever questions he pleases. Until Next Time...
