The Carolinas and the Southeast preparing for big impacts from Helene. Hurricane Helene is rapidly intensifying in the Gulf of Mexico and is forecast to make landfall along the big bend of Florida. From there, impacts from the storm will move quickly over Georgia and into both North Carolina and South Carolina. Excessive rain will cause flash flooding with the greatest risks across portions of the western North Carolina mountains, where the region is already being soaked by a predecessor rain event underway. With more than ten inches of rain possible, the risk of flash flooding in the mountains is extremely high. The risk of flooding extends across much of the Carolinas, where a couple of inches of rain is also possible. Even with Helene forecast to weaken to a tropical storm over Georgia and the Carolinas, gusty winds could still reach hurricane-force with some areas forecast to see 70 mph or greater wind gusts. This could easily topple trees and power lines. Power outages are anticipated with this storm. Plus an ongoing tornado threat caused by the tropical system will extend across much of both North Carolina and South Carolina, with coastal SC expected to see the greatest risk of tornadoes Thursday night. On this week's episode of the Carolina Weather Group podcast, meteorologists and experts from across the region to help you understand the localized impacts. We welcome WCNC's Brad Panovich, WFMY's Tim Buckley, WRDW's Riley Hale along with Duke Energy's Jeff Brooks. NOAA's National Weather Service (NWS) has provided manual translations of weather forecasts and warnings in Spanish for the past 30 years, but now the agency has a new tool to be more accurate, efficient and equitable.  Through a series of pilot projects over the past few years, NWS forecasters have been training artificial intelligence (AI) software for weather, water and climate terminology in Spanish and Simplified Chinese, the most common languages in the United States after English. NWS will add Samoan and Vietnamese next, and more languages in the future.  Two of the nearly dozen locations where these AI-translated severe weather bulletins are being tested are in the Carolinas. This week, James Brierton talks with Chris Rohrbach, a meteorologist and web developer at the National Weather Service in Columbia, South Carolina, where this artificial intelligence experiment is being tested alongside locations such as Greenville-Spartanburg, SC. James Brierton and Shea Gibson caught up with Richard recently during the Weather Pods Disaster Relief Telethon. Here now is that updated conversation, followed by an encore presentation of our first interview from 2020. Frying Pan Tower is located 32 miles off the coast of North Carolina and rises 135' above the Atlantic Ocean. It helps provide safety to Mariners in the Atlantic Ocean, is used for environmental research and education studies, and is a shelter to a natural ecosystem for marine wildlife. Its location makes it a prime spot to observe tropical weather off the Carolina coast, including a direct hit by Hurricane Irene in 2011. Weather conditions are observed on-board by weather sensors and a live streaming webcam. In 2010, the government placed the Frying Pan Tower up for auction, with the winning bid going to Richard Neal of Charlotte, NC. Richard is our guest on this episode of the Carolina Weather Group. The tower is powered using wind turbines and solar energy for electricity. It has a filtration system for potable water and high-speed Internet for communications. The mission is targeted to launch no earlier than 1:45 a.m. EST Monday, Feb. 27, on SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft – named Endeavour – atop the company's Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy. Mission operations teams will be closely monitoring the weather leading up to liftoff. Following a handover on the space station with Crew-6, NASA's SpaceX Crew-5 crew members will undock from the space station. The NASA SpaceX trip comes at the same time Russia prepares to launch a passengerless Soyuz MS-23 crew ship at 7:24 p.m. EST Thursday from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on a two-day trek to the space station. Besides delivering provisions for the crew, the Soyuz MS-23 spacecraft will return NASA astronaut Frank Rubio and cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin back to Earth later this year. Those three men are awaiting a new spacecraft because their previous craft, Soyuz MS-22, suffered a depressurization issue that made it not idle for human spaceflight back to Earth. A large, wind-driven fire is burning on Pilot Mountain, located northwest of Winston-Salem in North Carolina. 200 to 300 acres have burned, according to local reports, and what you're seeing here is new imagery from the Carolina Weather Group's Dan Whittaker, who spent the day on the ground there Sunday. By nightfall Sunday, the fire was climbing up and towards the knob. You can see that here in this new post from Dan. Dan will continue to send back photos and videos just as firefighters continue to try and get this fire under control. The weather is not making things easier for firefighters. Dry, windy conditions have allowed the fire to grow to this size and things don't get immediately better. A cold front means winds gusty around 20 mph Monday will continue to make fire containment a challenge. You'll remember, we're dramatically behind on rain. Here's a look at the drought monitor. Combine that with low humidity, and you have prime conditions for fires. You'll notice all of our video is recorded from the ground. That's because a no-fly zone has been issued by the FAA. Please, don't fly any drones in the area. Firefighters are using aircraft to aid in the firefighting efforts. This same fire danger exists across much of the Carolinas. Now is not the time to be burning leaves or starting a campfire. Matter of fact, I'm holding the latest adversary here from the National Weather Service and they warn, in no uncertain terms, "There is an increased threat of fires growing out of control on Monday due to a combination of low humidity around 30 percent or lower during the afternoon, northwest winds gusting above 30 mph, and dry fuels" - meaning leaves, brush, grasses and more. The cause of the Pilot Mountain fire is not yet known. Luckily the Pilot Mountain State Park campground was safely evacuated without any injuries. The park remains closed for the immediate future. We'll get to provide updates here on the Carolina Weather Group YouTube channel. You'll also be notified of a new episode for our weekly Wednesday night show.
