Imagining After Capitalism (Triarchy Press, 2025) is the culmination of a decade-long exploration of what comes next after capitalism. It leverages previous work in developing foresight methodologies, which are featured in two previous books: Teaching about the Future and Thinking about the Future (2nd edition), both with Peter Bishop. It also leverages my work in identifying long-term values shifts—which are pivotal to After Capitalism—that are highlighted in ConsumerShift: How Changing Values Are Reshaping the Consumer Landscape. Arguing that the absence of compelling positive alternatives keeps us stuck in a combination of fear, denial, and false hope, he offers three “guiding images” for the long-term future: an environmentally driven Circular Commons, a socially and politically driven Non-Workers' Paradise, and a technology-driven Tech-Led Abundance. Imagining After Capitalism argues “first things first.” Let us first decide where we want to go before building detailed plans for getting there. The three “guiding images” are not the answers, but are intended to provoke discussion about the possibilities. The book offers an alternative to the prevailing doom and gloom and suggests there are indeed positive alternatives out there and it's time to get started on crafting a different path to the future! Andy Hines brings more than three decades of experience as a futurist to the Imagining After Capitalism work. He has explored the future from multiple vantage points. He is currently an Associate Professor and Program Coordinator at the University of Houston Foresight program. When something goes wrong in the supply chain, it is never good news. It always leads to disruption, often costs a lot of money, and sometimes people get hurt - or worse. In July of 2024, the USDA suspended production at a Boar's Head processing plant in Jarratt, Virginia. A listeria outbreak, the worst such outbreak in over a decade, had started in the plant. The facility has been closed indefinitely, leading to over 500 layoffs of union employees, but that wasn't the worst of the fallout. Before the outbreak was over, over 7 million pounds of meat were recalled, 59 people were hospitalized, and 10 people lost their lives. How could production have gone so wrong, especially in such a heavily inspected industry? Unfortunately, as the details emerged, it became clear that this was an easily preventable situation allowed to happen by multiple layers of mismanagement. In this episode of the Art of Supply podcast, Kelly Barner covers: The details behind the outbreak: Where did it start and how did it spread? An odd family squabble that may or may not have contributed to the problem but which certainly didn't help Problems associated with inspections: How were they conducted and why did they fail to protect consumers? Benton and Abi agree to disagree about how to disagree. In our "polarized" political climate, what value is there in a rhetoric that doesn't aim to change minds? Is it possible to embody empathetic listening while protecting ourselves from harmful views? They discuss their not-especially-successful attempts to converse with undecided voters as the election nears, and how presidential debates aren't the right format for solving problems. Episode #65 - In this inspiring episode, hosts Kathy Buckworth and Evelyn Brindle had the pleasure of speaking with the remarkable Emily Jarratt, who at 99 years old, shared her rich tapestry of life experiences with us.  Emily joins us from The Village of Tansley Woods retirement in Burlington. Emily, originally from England, moved to Canada in 1952 seeking a better life post-war. She and her husband chose Canada over Australia, a decision that led to a fulfilling life, including raising a family in Vancouver. Emily's journey is a testament to embracing change and the importance of family. A former medical assistant and later a registered nurse, Emily's passion for learning and helping others shone through as she recounted her career shift at the age of 52. Her dedication to her profession and her ability to adapt to new roles is truly inspiring. Emily's zest for life extends to her hobbies, which range from woodworking and sewing to playing the ukulele and keyboard. She emphasized the importance of hobbies in combating loneliness and staying mentally active. Her adventurous spirit was evident as she spoke about her travels with the Tansley Trippers and her love for destinations like Bermuda. A native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Muhammad changed his surname after joining the Nation of Islam in 1987. At Muhammad's trial, the prosecution claimed that the attacks were part of a plot to kill his ex-wife and regain custody of his children, but the judge ruled that there was insufficient evidence to support this argument. Muhammad's trial for one of the murders (of Dean Harold Meyers in Prince William County, Virginia) began in October 2003, and ended with his conviction for capital murder. Four months later he was sentenced to death. While awaiting execution in Virginia, in August 2005, Muhammad was extradited to Maryland for trial, resulting in his conviction on six counts of first-degree murder in May 2006. Upon completion of the trial activity in Maryland, he was returned to Virginia pending an agreement with another state or the District of Columbia seeking to try him. He was not tried on additional charges in other Virginia jurisdictions and faced potential trials in three other states and the District of Columbia involving other murders and attempted murders. All appeals of his conviction for killing Meyers had been made and rejected. Appeals for Muhammad's other trials remained pending at the time of his execution. Muhammad was executed by lethal injection on November 10, 2009, at 9:06 p.m. EST at the Greensville Correctional Center near Jarratt, Virginia, and was pronounced dead at 9:11 p.m. EST. Muhammad declined to make a final statement.

Have you ever asked yourself, "Who the heck am I? What am I here for? or.... What do I stand for?! Of course you have, you are living the human experience. I feel many of us seem to be in the same boat at one stage of our lives. So today on this episode I invited a good friend of mine, who also happens to be a mentor in identity to help us decipher how we can dig into finding our true selves. His name is Todd Jarratt, and growing up he was the epitome of the young achiever. By 19 he was DUX at school & university, a national athlete, sports commentator, motorsport team manager & sports journalist. And by 21 he had became a university lecturer in human physiology, & performance coach for world champion & olympic level athletes.  And then came his moment. After multiple years of health complications Todd nearly lost his life through immune complications. It was during this time he realised his life had been a mask for an internal pain. So began his journey of mental, emotional, physical & surprising to him, spiritual, healing. Against the medical system's beliefs Todd healed himself from within & has witnessed hundreds of others do the same since. He now works with the human identity - what makes us who we are, & also who we aren't. Todd's mission is simple. First: to be happiness, joy & love each day & secondly to empower others to know it is their heart, not their head that holds the answers to which they continuously seek. As you will hear during this conversation he is purely all heart and a unique soul. Todd has a way with people that allows him to peel the layers away and see the real person underneath… he may have made me a bit emotional during part of this conversation! On this episode we also discuss: Mindset V's Mindfulness How to shift from fixed mindset How to peel back the mask many of us hide behind & so much more. Looking Outside Values: Dr Andy Hines, Futurist & Associate Professor University of Houston

Looking Outside.

We start season 3 digging deep into human values, while speculating on their evolved expression into the future, with futurist and Associate Professor at University of Houston's Foresight Program, Dr Andy Hines. Having authored a book on the topic of values, ConsumerShift, Andy shares how defining what a value is and how it is expressed by people with differing typologies, helps us perceive them as something less static and therefore shows us their potential evolution into the future. Jo and Andy discuss how values - an integral part of a person's identity (their purpose, needs, world views and beliefs) - are expressed in the real world, as directed by external pressures but also individual choices. Andy speculates how modern values, built on capitalism, competition and an obsession with accumulation, may evolve. Andy has been practicing futurism for over three decades and now teaches the skills of a futurist, but he has also applied it first hand during his time at Kellogg's and Dow Chemical. Through observing and projecting changes in the world, he explains why the science of futurism is fruitful, that more things have come true than not, but that we must align to the motion of change with patience, because contrary to popular thought, change happens slower than we think. -- To look outside, Andy speaks to different groups of people looking for diversity of thought; people who come at the world in a way that Andy doesn't. He says this can be done observationally, through reading a magazine you don't normally read, going on community boards you wouldn't normally engage in, but that it should be done with patience, over an extended period of time. By seeking out unique view points, Andy seeks to build a better understanding of people in sub-cultures outside his own. -- Dr. Andy Hines is Associate Professor and Program Coordinator for the University of Houston's Graduate Program in Foresight and is also speaking, workshopping, and consulting through his firm Hinesight. His 30+ years of professional futurist experience includes a decade working inside first the Kellogg Company and later Dow Chemical, and consulting work with Coates & Jarratt, Inc. and Social Technologies/Innovaro. Jarratt is a fitness trainer and motivator, who is also a Spikeball elite athlete, who plays at the highest level! What I love about Jarratt and his work is he focuses on not only the importance of fitness, but mindfulness as well. There is so much more to fitness than just the physical aspect and Jarratt is here to remind people to be their best self and enjoy life. In today's episode we talk about topics like: Well rounded athlete End of college career Fitness does not have to be one way Flip the switch Positive self talk The more you say, you create Controlling the controllable What makes you feel good Move to make you feel good Food is fuel Asking yourself the right question What can I add to this meal to make it better? Not focusing on the negative Professional Spikeball Athlete Don't take yourself too seriously Being present Where To Find Jarratt: Instagram: @jarrattrouse This podcast was created to motivate, inspire and help you find your light to shine on the rest of the world!
