In honor of the legendary Val Kilmer, who has passed away at the age of 65, we're sharing The B-Side's episode from 2022 discussing his career and most overlooked films. Subscribe to The B-Side: https://pod.link/520164968 See the original description below: Today, we discuss one of the most intriguing actors of his generation: Val Kilmer! To tackle such an enigma, we bring in the legendary Katie Walsh! A must-follow on Twitter, a co-host of the insatiably-entertaining Miami Nice Podcast, and an accomplished writer. The B-Sides featured today are: Kill Me Again, At First Sight, The Salton Sea, and Mindhunters. We discuss how Kilmer was a prodigy––the youngest student admitted into Juilliard's drama department––before his Broadway debut in the (ultimately) star-studded Slab Boys. There's talk of his well-documented penchant to be difficult on set, as well as those who defended him and his abilities. We confront Dan's deep admiration for the poorly-aged The Salton Sea, make brief mention of other B-Sides like Thunderheart, The Real McCoy, and Spartan, and reference both Kilmer's autobiography I'm Your Huckleberry and the 2021 documentary Val. Finally, we acknowledge that perhaps Val Kilmer was ultimately a movie star that never really wanted to be a movie star.

SEASON 2 - EPISODE 86 - DIANNA FREAS - SET DECORATOR On this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, we're joined by set decorator Dianna Freas (FOR ALL MANKIND, LONE STAR, THUNDERHEART). Studying illustration and fine arts at Syracuse and Parsons, she later attended NYU and found her skills well suited to set design. After an early career period working as a co-production designer alongside husband and production designer Dan Bishop, Dianna transitioned to set decoration full time. Throughout the episode, Dianna defines some of the myriad of roles within the art and set decoration departments. What are lead men? How does she work with a buyer? What does the set decoration coordinator typically oversee? Who keeps the books? Who's responsible for that lamp? The demarcations are many, the responsibilities are numerous, and Dianna maps it all out for us with clarity. We later extoll the virtue of flexibility, and Dianna gives advice to anyone looking to break into the art department. - This episode is sponsored by Godox & the Dallas Film Commission

Originally Aired - 11/20/2019: Native American Vietnam Veteran Robert Primeaux shared his journey from a Lakota reservation to the Army, to Hollywood. As a young man, Primeaux was eager to get off the reservation and see the world. To leave, he decided to join the Army. He trained in Fort Lewis and Fort Knox before joining the 101st Airborne Division and sent off to Vietnam. In 1972, Primeaux returned to the United States. His younger brother had been killed in a car accident, leaving Primeaux as the sole male survivor of his family. However, he did not stay in the Army long. A car accident of his own put him in a coma for three weeks. After he recovered, he was discharged.Primeaux then lived on his grandmother's ranch while he recovered from his injuries. To help with his recovery, he began to self-rehab by working with the horses on the ranch. His love for horses gave him the opportunity to go to school through a rodeo scholarship from the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA).Between school and living on his family ranch, Primeaux met Michael Apted on the set of Thunderheart in South Dakota. Through this meeting, he landed a stunt role on Thunderheart and become eligible for access to the Union of the Screen Actors Guild.Later, Robert moved to LA to begin his film career where he landed roles in Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman and a more prominent role in Rough Riders. This role as Indian Bob was special to Primeaux because the director John Milius specifically created it with him in mind.Recently, Robert has been advocating for fallen service-members to be enshrines in the NFL Hall of Fame.Throughout his life, through thick and thin, Primeaux credited the Four Cardinal Lakota Virtues for helping him recover from the Vietnam War and his car accident. From childhood, Lakota Warriors were taught these four virtues. Primeaux stated that warriors who were taught the true meaning of these virtues learn to treat their Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.Borne the Battle Veteran of the Week:Army Air Corps Veteran Gus Palmer Sr.

This 1992 movie is based on real events. Director Michael Apted also releaded Incident At Oglala, which can be a companion film to this movie, as they overlap so much.  While this is a fictional tale, it is 100% inspired by true events. There are many parallels from the American Indian Movement, involvement of the Tribal Chairperson with the U.S. Government, Guardians of the Oglala Nation (GOONs), etc. This movie is pretty darn accurate.  Accuracy aside, this is a tale of Ray Levoi (Kilmer) who is an FBI Agent with blood connections to the Oglala Sioux. The movie takes place on their reservation, after a murder. The movie explores the civil unrest, dynamic between the government/tribe, and dives into the connection of Ray Levoi to his Native roots. This exciting murder mystery takes an solid look at Rez life from an outsider, battling with being accepted by the community and trying to come to terms with his own identity.  Come listen as I discuss the plot, positives, negatives, and final thoughts on this great film.

According to the documentary’s director, accomplished filmmaker Michael Apted (Coal Miner’s Daughter, Thunderheart, The World Is Not Enough), Robert Redford ruined “Incident at Oglala” out of fear of upsetting the powers that be. Although Redford was scarcely involved in the production of the documentary, he became heavily involved in its post-production, exercising his authority as executive producer to censor the final cut. When Mr. Apted objected to the omission of a vital section of commentary from two circuit court judges criticizing the handling of Leonard’s trial, he was overruled and banned from the film’s Sundance premiere.

Because our mascot is a turkey, and because we generally frown upon genocide, Paul and Arlo are spending Thanksgiving weekend discussing films with ties to Native American culture. For this Geek Challenge, Paul urges Arlo to watch Michael Apted's 1992 conspiracy thriller Thunderheart, starring Val Kilmer as an FBI agent who grows to embrace his Sioux heritage. In turn, Arlo makes Paul watch Jim Jarmusch's 1995 psychedelic Western Dead Man, wherein Johnny Depp's iteration of William Blake takes an offbeat journey to the next life. The boys address the major caveat of both films starring white men, as well as their own lily whiteness; determine that Graham Greene and Gary Farmer walk away with their respective movies; and discuss how both films explore spiritual death and rebirth. With a bonus discussion of Apted's documentary Incident at Oglala!   NEXT: Arlo's having a baby. We're going on hiatus with hopes of returning in mid-to-late January. In this episode we look at the career of the Iceman himself, Val Kilmer! Kilmer broke onto the scene with the comedy flicks TOP SECRET! (see our Best Movie You Never Saw of that HERE) and REAL GENIUS before taking flight with Tony Scott's TOP GUN. From there, Kilmer took up the sword as Madmartigan in WILLOW before landing a stream of great roles throughout the 90s, including THE DOORS, THUNDERHEART, TOMBSTONE, BATMAN FOREVER, HEAT, THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS and THE SAINT. While he never had another era as strong as that, Kilmer dipped in and out with some really solid work, including the criminally underrated THE SALTON SEA, WONDERLAND, SPARTAN and of course, KISS KISS, BANG BANG. From there, things got a little hazy for Kilmer and his health took a turn for the worse. He popped up here and there, working with TOP GUN's Tony Scott again in DEJA VU, started playing Mark Twain on stage, did some voice-over work, some TV appearances and even made a lesser-known flick with Francis Ford Coppola called TWIXT. While not everything he's done in his later years is as strong, credit is due to Kilmer for remaining a consumate professional in his craft and fighting through his own health scares to continue doing what he loves, even getting a return to the franchise that started it all for him, TOP GUN: MAVERICK. Here's to you, Val Kilmer...you can be our wingman anytime!

Graham Greene and Aaron Wolf and Face2Face host David Peck talk about the new perfectly timed Halloween release Tar, the La Brea Tar Pits, real stories and real acting, monsters and kernels of truth that can be found in every story.TrailerThe film is now available on Digital and On Demand.Synopsis:Tar is a new thriller about a family business that is forced to shut down and move as the cities subway is expanding under their feet and the office building is slated for demolition. However, something primal is awoken by the underground construction, and a night of sombre packing becomes a desperate fight for survival! The 1091 Picture new film Tar, written and directed by Canadian Aaron Wolf, starring Timothy Bottoms (Golden Globe Nominee), Graham Greene (Academy Award Nominee) Tiffany Shepis and Max Perlich. Here’s a special message from Aaron:“As a Canadian, with my family being from Toronto, every time I get to bring a film home to my Motherland, it feels extra special. Summers in Toronto were a childhood happy place to me. As a kid, whenever I’d made a film or acted in something, the whole family would gather around my Grandparents TV and watch my stuff, the good, the not so good, and the ridiculous - lots of ridiculous. Now to be able to bring another film to Canada, this time getting to co-star with two fellow Canadians in Oscar Nominee Graham Greene,as well as Stuart Stone, it feels we are giving a movie set in Los Angeles, it’s Canadian blood, and once you see the film, a bit of mine. And most of all, getting to release the film in Canada makes me hope my Grandparents are looking down, from wherever they are, smiling.”About Graham and Aaron:Graham Greene was born in Brantford, Ontario, this Oneida Indian never thought about the acting profession during his youth. While working as an audio technician for a Canadian rock band, one of his co-workers encouraged him to try out the art. Greene was indifferent to the idea, until losing a game of cards to which he put his future career on the line.He attended The Centre for Indigenous Theatre's Native Theatre School program to try out his acting chops. After graduating in 1974, he started landing small roles in television, film and radio. He then crossed the pond to work on the London stage for a few years.Greene returned to Canada in the mid-1980s where he picked up his first major feature film credit, the historical epic, Revolution, opposite Al Pacino. Five years later, he landed the role of Kicking Bird in Kevin Costner’s Dances with Wolves. The part not only provided him with major exposure around the world, it garnered him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. With the door to the acting worldwide open, Greene took advantage taking major roles in films like Thunderheart, Maverick, Die Hard: With a Vengeance, Camille, and The Green Mile.Greene has also made a significant contribution to the small screen with regular gigs on the series The Red Green Show, Northern Exposure, Lonesome Dove: The Series, The Adventures of Dudley the Dragon, Wolf Lake and narrating the Discovery Channel's Exhibit A series. In 1992, he was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Southwest Museum in Los Angeles, one of the nation's pre-eminent museums dedicated to the culture of Native Americans. In 2002, he won the Best Actor Award for his role in Skins at the Tokyo International Film Festival. In his native Canada, he has been nominated three times for Gemini awards and in 2004 he was honoured with the Gemini's Earle Grey Award.(With thanks to tribute.ca)Aaron Wolf is an American actor, writer and director best known for the feature documentary Restoring Tomorrow. Get to know the bison on a very informative episode of The Main Course as Patrick Martins explores the bovine animal with Patrick Fitzsimons, VP of Thunderheart Bison. Listen in as Patrick explains what make bison such unique (and delicious) animals and how Thunderheart Bison have genetics that trace back all the way to a herd from legendary Texas cowboy Charles Goodnight. Learn about some interesting cuts of meat unique to bison like the hump roast and discover why natural breeding is far more effective than artificial insemination when it comes to these creatures. Patrick Fitzsimmons also discusses his work with the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance (FARFA), an advocate for independent farmers, ranchers, livestock owners, and homesteaders. Later in the show, Patrick Martins checks in with Peter de Garma of PastaWorks, a lovely market on Hawthorne Ave in Portland, OR. Today's program was brought to you by Rolling Press. “Bovine animals are designed to eat grass. They aren't desgiend to be in feedlots eating grain and going straight to the slaughterhouse. If possible – they need to be harvested right in the field – where they feel the least amount of stress.” 05:00 “Most bison are very docile and happy to have you around as long as you don't pose a threat to them.” 14:00 –Patrick Fitzsimons, VP of Thunderheart Bison “Portland out Portlandia's Portlandia in many Portland ways.” 47:00 –Peter de Garmo of PastaWorks

Episode 75 - Therapeutic Cleansing

Every couple of months we like to have a nice purifying cleansing by asking ourselves, "Where is this bus going." Episode 75 is that cleansing. The episode started out normal enough (from a certain point a view). MrBubble, being the joker he is, has played another prank on Yivvits and also has a story that gives us hope for the next generation of Star Wars fans. What sort of fun things does Yivvits have to talk about? He complains about Windows Vista. Finally, we have a candid discussion about the hope (or lack thereof) we have for Star Wars Galaxies, and ask ourselves: "When is enough, enough?" Yet again, not a lot to discuss about Star Wars Galaxies this week (we recorded before Thunderheart announced his resignation) but never to fear - Yivvits and MrBubble *always* deliver. Even better, our pointless ramblings almost always tie into Star Wars or SWG.
