Hour 1 The Grimace Mets finally lost a game after winning seven straight. The Yankees also lost to the Orioles and they have a defensive catcher problem with Jose Trevino. Yankees relievers hit two Orioles last night in retaliation for Aaron Judge getting hit the night before. Judge did not play last night. Boomer tried to talk about the Rangers and Barclay Goodrow and Gio couldn't handle it. Unfortunately he talked about it for quite a while. C-Lo is in for Jerry and is here for his first update of the day. Jerry took his family to Arizona, where it's going to be 113 degrees. C-Lo started with the Yankees loss to the Orioles and Gerrit Cole getting his first start of the season. The Mets winning streak is over and they play in Chicago starting tomorrow. In the final segment of the hour, Gio visited Gunnar yesterday and watched him ‘powerwash'. It did not go well. Gio understands, as the only tool in his toolbox is a checkbook.  Hour 2 It seems to come up every year, retaliating by drilling the opposing team's hitter if they hit your guy. Gio thinks it's weird because we often talk about safety in sports, and then say you have to retaliate. The Yankees did it last night and it hurt them because the guy they hit scored. It does seem to make the fans happy, but it really didn't make much sense for them to do that. Will Aaron Judge be in the lineup today? We also somehow talked about Boomer always playing poorly in the Astrodome against the Oilers. C-Lo returns for an update and starts with a Devils trade for goalie Jacob Markstrom (Boomer insisted he start with that). He then went to Barclay Goodrow being claimed off waivers by the Sharks. Then we turned to baseball as Jose Trevino gave up another 4 steals. Gerrit Cole talked about his first start of the season. Brandon Tierney really wanted the Yankees to drill two Orioles. The Mets winning streak came to an end with a loss to the Rangers. We got into a discussion about mosquitos and how they suck our blood. In the final segment of the hour, a mom from Long Island called in to tell her side of the story from yesterday, when Jerry said there was almost a fight between parents at a little league game. A few callers came at her and she remained calm and stood her ground.  Hour 3 We continued our discussion on youth sports and how some parents get completely out of hand. C-Lo returns for an update and starts with the Yankees losing to the Orioles in ten innings. The Yankees retaliated by hitting two Orioles players after Aaron Judge got hit on the hand the night before. Buck Showalter talked about what he looks for in a player. He doesn't want a flat butt player or a player that already has a full beard. He has his reasons. Boomer talked about quarterbacks needing to be thick in the butt and thighs. In the final segment of the hour, Boomer said he watched the Fever vs the Mystics in the WNBA. The Mets are off and the Yankees are playing a day game, so Gio will watch the Netflix documentary, ‘Tell Them You Love Me', about a professor at Rutgers and a non-verbal person. The professor went to jail so it's pretty interesting.  Hour 4 We talked more about the Yankees retaliating last night by hitting two Orioles hitters. We also heard from Joe Francisco, as his little league team was being badmouthed from some opponents in NJ. C-Lo returns for his final update of the day, but first Boomer tries to talk him into doing the 5-Borough Bike Tour next May. The Moment of The Day involves a little league mom defending her team's behavior and a caller telling her she's the problem with youth sports. In the final segment of the show, we are both getting texts about Team Francisco, a little league team on Long Island. Gio also talked about the lack of lovemaking if someone is staying at their house.

The shooting occurred at around 10:30 a.m., and the police have released a description of a single suspect—a slender male, approximately six feet tall. The suspect was observed fleeing the area after the shooting. Responding officers utilized K-9s and technology to gather evidence and identify the suspect. Investigators believe the incident was not a random act of violence, and there are no indications that the public is at risk. Police encourage individuals with information to contact 911 or CrimeStoppers Greater Atlanta at 404-577-TIPS. STORY 2: Cobb Teachers Will See Bonuses this Month The Cobb Board of Education unanimously approved staff bonuses, recommended by Superintendent Chris Ragsdale. The bonuses will be partially funded by the state, with Governor Brian Kemp's announced pay increase for certain educators. The district is providing additional cash to all non-temporary employees, with amounts varying based on their work hours. Employees working more than half-time will receive a $1,000 bonus, while those working less than half-time will get $500. The bonuses will be reflected in bi-weekly paychecks on Jan. 19 for some and Jan. 24 for monthly pay. The move aims to offer extra support to district employees. STORY 3: North Cobb Seniors Take Polar Plunge to Help Friend 'Strike Out' Cancer North Cobb High School senior Kendall Vincent, diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma, has received overwhelming support from his four best friends, known as the "Fab Five." When Vincent lost his hair due to chemotherapy, his friends shaved their heads in solidarity. To raise funds for Vincent's treatment, they organized the "Strikeout Cancer Plunge," where they jumped into a freezing pool. The effort, led by Mitchell Addison's mother, aims to help Vincent, whose father is also battling cancer. The community and social media have played a crucial role in raising awareness and support for the Vincent family. Contributions can be made to @Susan-Addison-2144 on Venmo with the memo "Strikeout Cancer." We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Break:  ESOG – DRAKE   STORY 4: Scamihorn Elected Cobb School Board Chair The Cobb County Board of Education elected Randy Scamihorn as chair and David Banks as vice chair for 2024. Scamihorn, who has served three previous terms as chair, expressed the importance of continuing to build on the excellence of Cobb Schools and ensuring the safety of students, staff, and faculty. Banks, who cited hearing and eyesight concerns, prioritized lowering taxes for constituents. The board, predominantly Republican, has seen the chair position shift within the GOP for over a decade, with the last Democratic chair serving in 2011. STORY 5: Following Debate Cobb School Board Sets 2024 Schedule The Cobb County Board of Education approved its 2024 meeting schedule with one meeting per month, following a 6-0 vote by members, with one Republican voting "present." Democratic member Becky Sayler proposed an amendment to add six additional meetings, emphasizing the need for more time to review agenda items before voting. The amendment was defeated in a 4-3 vote along party lines. Another successful amendment, proposed by Leroy Tre' Hutchins, recommended scheduling a board retreat to build relationships and discuss norms. The retreat date is yet to be confirmed. The debate highlighted differences over meeting frequency and transparency practices. We'll be back in a moment. Break: INGLES 10 STORY 6: Marietta Postal Worker Alleged to Have Stolen Amid Flood of Complaints Multiple Cobb County residents, including Kennesaw resident Ralph Fowler, have reported incidents of stolen and altered checks sent through the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). Fowler's checks, sent to pay bills, were washed, with one changing from $30 to $3,000. The Marietta Post Office manager confirmed the internal issue, revealing that an employee involved no longer works there. Many other residents have reported similar thefts of thousands of dollars. The USPS Office of the Inspector General is investigating the matter. Thirteen Georgia members of Congress have written to U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy about widespread USPS issues, including mail theft. STORY 7: Gas Prices in Cobb Drop 16 Cents On Average in Last Month Gas prices in Cobb County have decreased by an average of 16 cents in the last month, according to data from the American Automobile Association (AAA). The average cost of unleaded gas in Cobb County is $3.01, down from $3.17 in December, while the state and national averages are $2.98 and $3.09, respectively. The drop in prices is attributed to lower oil prices, and AAA suggests that prices could continue to decrease. However, motorists are advised to be cautious, as seasonal factors may impact future prices during winter. In December, gas prices spiked after the expiration of Georgia Governor Brian Kemp's executive order suspending the state's gas tax.   Break: Henssler :60  Signoff-   Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal podcast. Break 1: MOG   STORY 1: Two Teens — One Still At Large — Charged In June Shooting Death At Gwinnett County Park Two teenagers, Anwar Brenard Singleton and Prince James, have been charged with murder in the shooting death of 19-year-old Brian Arnold-Causey in June. Arnold-Causey was shot at Lenora Park and later dropped off at a Gwinnett County fire station, where he succumbed to his injuries. Anwar Brenard Singleton, 18, has been charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during certain felonies. He was booked into the Gwinnett County Jail on October 28, 2023. Prince James, 19, also faces the same charges, and his whereabouts are currently unknown. Police are seeking information on James' location.   STORY 2: Lanier Grad Derrick Brown Nears NFL DT Tackles Record Derrick Brown, a former Lanier star and defensive lineman for the Carolina Panthers, is on the verge of setting an NFL record for tackles in a season by a defensive tackle. Brown, who tied a Panthers record with 67 tackles last season, is two tackles away from surpassing the record of 96 stops set by the Miami Dolphins' Christian Wilkins in 2022. Despite the Panthers' challenging season with a 2-14 record, Brown has been a standout player, being the NFC's first alternate at defensive tackle for the Pro Bowl. Brown, 25, is in his fourth NFL season out of Auburn. STORY 3: Gwinnett Chef Plans 'Major Pivot' to Feed the Hungry Chef Hank Reid, through his mobile food distribution organization Lettum Eat, has provided over 150,000 nourishing meals to the food-insufficient in Gwinnett County. In 2024, Reid plans to pivot by purchasing three modular classroom trailers from the Gwinnett County School District. These trailers, called Modular Production Kitchens (MPKs), will be strategically placed in food desert areas in partnership with churches to streamline the meal outreach process. Reid is seeking funding to complete the prototype MPK, and the entire three-trailer project is expected to cost at least $200,000 each. Lettum Eat has been serving the community since 2019, providing fresh meals through food truck feeding tours and distributing prepackaged frozen meals.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back   Break 2: TOM WAGES – DTL   STORY 4: Gwinnett will Spend $2.5 Billion to Operate County Government Gwinnett County commissioners voted 4-1 to approve the $2.5 billion 2024 budget, which includes the $1.97 billion operating budget and the $561 million capital budget. The budget introduces 104 new positions across various departments, expands microtransit into Suwanee, Sugar Hill, and Buford, offers a 4% pay-for-performance raise for county employees, and addresses affordable housing needs. The county allocates $25.3 million for elections, adds two affordable housing coordinator positions, and utilizes $18 million in federal funding to incentivize affordable housing development. Other additions include a new med unit in Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services, expansion of the Gwinnett Trails program, and improvements in mental health care.   STORY 5: State Rep. Greg Kennard will not seek re-election after redistricting put him in the same district as Sam Park Two Georgia House Democrats, Rep. Gregg Kennard and Rep. Doug Stoner, will not seek reelection in 2024 after being drawn into districts with fellow Democrats during the recent redistricting special session. The new House map approved by Republican majorities paired Kennard with House Minority Whip Sam Park in Gwinnett County, and Stoner with Rep. Teri Anulewicz in Cobb County. Kennard cited his unwillingness to force voters to choose between him and Park as a reason for stepping down. The redistricting special session aimed to address a ruling declaring the 2021 legislative and congressional maps violated the Voting Rights Act.   We'll be back in a moment   Break 3: ESOG – INGLES 2   STORY 6: UGA Extension offers disaster support throughout the state The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension is aiding Georgia's farmers in emergency preparedness and recovery from climate-related events. With a presence in all 159 counties, UGA Extension provides training and resources to help communities prepare for and rebound from weather-related calamities. The extension has received grants to spearhead emergency preparedness throughout the state, focusing on the unique challenges faced by each region. The extension agents work with the Georgia Department of Agriculture to collect agricultural economic damage data and assist farmers in navigating relief programs after disaster events. The program also addresses farm and rural stress initiatives.   STORY 7: PCOM Georgia and Gwinnett County Public Schools work together to help STEM students Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) Georgia collaborate to provide STEM opportunities for Gwinnett students. PCOM Georgia serves as the presenting sponsor for the Gwinnett Science, Engineering + Innovation Fair, an annual event encouraging students to explore the sciences. PCOM Georgia faculty and staff also contribute to advisory boards and participate in events like Principal for a Day and the annual STAR Student luncheon. The collaboration extends to career fairs, simulation activities, and programs like the Future Healthcare Scholars program, reinforcing the commitment to STEM education in Gwinnett County.   We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: Henssler 60   Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post podcast. In the years when I was deciding that I wanted to do sports-talk radio, Andy was who I was listening to, and even though we didn't work with each other ton, I spent just enough time with him during my early years in the business to develop a deep appreciation for what he does, even if I don't always agree with what he says.In our conversation, Andy discusses the art of the interview, how his on-air career began, what it was like to feud with sports figures like Bob Huggins and Sam Wyche, being on air locally versus doing shows nationally, and the things he's regretted saying on the air. I wanted Andy as a guest because I wanted to try my hand at interviewing a great interviewer, and I hope you enjoy what I think is an entertaining conversation.

But first, he checks in with TommyFreezePops (Tom Carroll) for this week's edition of the “Opening Kick” (00:57 – 13:04). Plus, the guys talk about the Mardi Gras celebrations happening right now in New Orleans, LA.We then move to our interview with Ickey Woods, where he discusses a wide range of topics: how the Bengals of today still pay tribute to Ickey Woods by breaking out the “Ickey Shuffle” (15:14); why he was surprised by the Bengals' run this season, and thoughts on the Bengals' loss to the Rams in the Super Bowl (16:47); how Joe Mixon is able to stand out in a league that is continuing to devalue running backs year-after-year (18:48); thoughts on Joe Burrow, and what the Bengals have to do to improve next season (19:55); why the AFC is going to be a three-horse race for the next decade, and why the Bengals are capable of being the 1-seed in the AFC as soon as next season (22:07); why the 1988 Bengals were so special compared to the other Bengals' teams of that era (24:37); how Boomer Esiason was able to rise above a loaded quarterback field in 1988 to win NFL MVP (26:40); the origin of the “Ickey Shuffle,” and why it wasn't an overnight sensation (27:46); the difficulty of retiring at such a young age (29:15); his involvement with the Cincinnati Sizzle, and why he believes women's football could take off if the NFL gave it some real support and backing (30:13); the background and mission of his foundation, the “Jovante Woods Foundation,” and where people can go to support Ickey's mission of ending Asthma-educed deaths (32:29); why Ickey hated playing against Morten's Saints (36:22); why he believes it's partially the Bengals organization's fault that there is only one player from their team's history inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame (37:37); why he's happy Las Vegas finally got an NFL team, and the advice he'd give players who are embarking on a football career in Sin City (38:54); and this week's edition of “The Name Game,” featuring Randall Cunningham, Anthony Muñoz, Boomer Esiason, Paul Brown, Cris Collinsworth, Sam Wyche, Solomon Wilcots, James Brooks, Eddie Brown, Max Montoya, David Fulcher and Dick LeBeau (40:47).Finally, we close things out with “Morten's Game Winner” – a weekly monologue from The Great Dane on his biggest takeaway of the week. On the second and last Madison BookBeat show during the fall pledge drive, Stu Levitan welcomes a long-time friend of community radio and other alternative media, Dave Zirin. His new book The Kaepernick Effect: Taking a Knee, Changing the World was just published by our friends at The New Press, and brought him to a Madison book event at the Cap Times Idea Fest earlier this month. You probably know about Colin Kaepernick, the former quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. In 2012, he led the Niners to their first Super Bowl appearance since 1994 – a playoff run that you might recall included a record-setting performance against the Green Bay Packers. The next year, his first full season as a starter, the 49ers almost made it back to the big game, narrowly losing the NFC championship game to the Seattle Seahawks, led by former Badger Russell Wilson. 2014 and 2015 weren't that hot for either Kap or the Niners, and after several coaching changes, by 2016 he was back to being the backup. In the 49ers' third preseason game in august 2016, again against the Packers, Kaepernick sat on the bench during the playing of the U.S. national anthem, rather than stand. It was a low-key, personal protest against systemin racism and police literally getting away with murder. When a reporter for the NFL Network, Sam Wyche, asked him why, Kaepernick gave a direct answer: “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color,” he said. “There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.” And his comments were prophetic: “If they take football away, my endorsements from me, I know that I stood up for what is right.”There was a fair amount of outrage, but nothing that would compare to what happened after Kaepernick and former Green Beret and NFL player Nate Boyer discussed the matter and concluded that taking a knee rather than sitting on the bench would be a more powerful and more respectful protest.Of such miscalculations is history made.Kaepernick regained his status as the starting QB, and had an excellent season – 16 touchdowns against just four interceptions, and a league-leading 6.8 yards per carry. But he also knelt before every game, and was vilified from the White House to the outhouse. He became a free agent, but no other team would sign him. He has not played professional football since. But what of other athletes, not just fellow professionals, but athletes in high school and college, athletes who felt as he did about police brutality and systemic racism, athletes whom he inspired and gave language to, athletes who also knelt, or raised their fists, in the years 2016 to 2018. How did they come to take that action, and what reaction did they face when they did? It is their stories, not Colin Kaepernick's, which Dave Zirin tells in this powerful and important new book.It is a book Dave Zirin is supremely qualified to write. As sports editor for The Nation, columnist for the Progressive, host of the Edge of Sports podcast, and past winner of the NY Press Club Award for Sports Journalism, he is one of the foremost analysts of the role of sports in society. Which is why Named one of UTNE Reader's “50 Visionaries Who Are Changing Our World.” The Kaepernick Effect is his eleventh book since 2005, when What's My Name, Fool? Sports and Resistance in the United States was published by Haymarket Books, which has also published Things That Make White People Uncomfortable¸ written with former NFL star Michael Bennet, Welcome to the Terrordome: The Pain, Politics, and Promise of Sports, with a forward by Chuck D; and The John Carlos Story: The Sports Moment That Changed the World, written with that great athlete and social activist, and other books. Among his earlier books from the New Press, A People's History of Sports In The United States, part of Howard Zinn's People's History Series. ; Game Over: How Politics Has Turned the Sports World Upside Down, and Bad Sports: How Owners Are Ruining the Games We Love. His website is davezirin.com, his twitter handle @edgeofsports.It is a pleasure to welcome to Madison BookBeat, Dave Zirin

We can also connect via Twitter: @richtakesports Or you can email me: richmond@richtakeonsports.com   This week in the Rich Spotlight our guest is James Trapp most notably known now as Minister James Trapp on Twitter as his life has unfolded into serving others. James’s story is one of how talent can take you far greater than you can ever imagine through God given athletic ability but also the destruction that can occur when you become so self-absorbed in yourself. James was a stand-out cornerback at Clemson University and was selected in the 3rd Round of the NFL draft by the Oakland Raiders. He was also a world class sprinter and a two-sport athlete at Clemson from 1989-1993 where in 1992 he was the 200 meter indoor NCAA Champion and won 2 gold medals in international competitions and was selected as an alternate for the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. James was not a track guy playing football. He was a football player that just happened to run track and ultimately reaching the pinnacle in the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens by winning Super Bowl 35 in 2000 and you’ll understand what I mean after hearing his story. James’ journey started in Greenville, SC. Gives special recognition to Sam Wyche and his store because they gave him his first pair of football cleats. Played all sports in the neighborhood. Football was a part of his life because it was a get away from the life that he was living. You become cocky once you realize that you’re good at sports. Started playing football at 7 or 8.  Neighborhood vs. Neighborhood. Loved the physicality of football and become a sport that he really enjoyed. Baseball was too boring and basketball too many fouls. Moved out of South Carolina in Texas and Mom was in the military. In Fort Hood living in a new environment and ran track but did not play football. Moved to Oklahoma and started playing football and played QB. Very arrogant and cocky and the only thing that drove him was him. Played with Will Shields who is an NFL Hall of Famer and most of his coaching staff is still alive. Only players that could play were the ones that wanted to play at the next level. Coaches provide so much than just coaching. Knew he was better than everyone else in junior high school. Normally all kids from Lawton HS went to Oklahoma, however, Coach Switzer was not confident he would still be head coach and James actually want to go to Clemson and play for Coach Danny Ford. He was called a traitor by all of the people in Oklahoma when he signed with Clemson. Only ran track at Clemson because he couldn’t start on the football team as a freshman and he was very cocky on the track and he was a loud mouth. Had a to make a decision if he was going to really put in the effort to train more and better to compete against the best in the world. Changed his decision to fish only and the new training made the biggest difference. Started to make significant improvements and then made the Olympic team. Herman Moore torched him in a game. He knew he could play in the NFL and kept pushing forward and was kicked off the team by Ken Hatfield. James had a deal with Adidas on the table but still...

Episode 4 features former NFL Head Coach for the Cincinnati Bengals and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Sam Wyche shares his journey into sports that started with the competition between him and his younger brother.  His brother, Bubba was actually the better athlete however, Sam was still able to walk-on at Furman University and played QB. His first entry to coaching football was as a graduate assistant at the University of South Carolina working with Lou Holtz who was a defensive backs coach.  This assignment was temporary as he still wanted to play and eventually earned a position with the Cincinnati Bengals and ultimately played in a Super Bowl as a member of the Washington Redskins. After, he retired from playing Sam joined Bill Walsh’s staff in San Francisco as his top assistant and helped guide the 49er’s to a win in Super Bowl XVI.  His opportunity to be a head coach came shortly after that Super Bowl win as he accepted the position at Indiana University.  Only staying one year, Sam was convinced to become the Head Coach of the Cincinnati Bengals. At Cincinnati, Sam led the Bengals to one of the most potent offenses in league history at the time and earned a spot in Super Bowl XXIII against his best friend Bill Walsh who was still with the San Francisco 49er’s.  A narrow loss in the last 35 seconds still haunts Sam today and he eventually moved to Tampa Bay to become their head coach. Turning his career to broadcasting, Sam enjoyed the opportunity of working with the likes of Marv Albert and Kevin Harlan however, a medical malpractice issue which damaged is laryngeal nerve ended his broadcasting career. Sam experienced another medical issue and was only given hours to live before he received a heart transplant in September 2016.  Today, Sam is trying to create public awareness for organ donation.
