Jerry Roberts has been an associate pastor at Hope Church for nearly 26 years. This episode was recorded on his last full weekday before retirement, and pastor Matt asked Jerry to reflect on his life and ministry. Growing up in Fort Worth, Jerry came to faith at a young age but didn't fully commit to following Jesus until later in life. His background in business and psychology, coupled with a heart for evangelism, prepared him for a unique role in ministry. Throughout the conversation, Jerry emphasizes the importance of obedience to God's Word and the courage to share one's faith. He recalls numerous instances of witnessing to others, from door-to-door evangelism to chance encounters on airplanes. Jerry's advice for believers is simple yet profound: "Do what God wants you to do today" and walk by faith, not by sight. Jerry draws inspiration from 1 Peter 4:2, which says, "You won't spend the rest of your life chasing your own desires but you will be anxious to do the will of God" (Living Bible). He encourages listeners to make a daily commitment to follow Jesus, regardless of feelings or circumstances. As he concludes his time on staff at Hope Church, Jerry's life serves as a testament to the impact of faithful obedience and a willingness to be used by God.

It's one of the largest, single-day losses of boats by the United States in a military campaign – and it held that record for 200 years, until Pearl Harbor. The British raid on Essex during the War of 1812 saw more than two dozen ships destroyed. Also ruined were the local economy and the fortunes of those who made their living both in ship building and high seas merchant trading. It was a daring raid, told in great fashion by the foremost expert on the raid, Jerry Roberts, who's researched and written on this major event.

Today, together with Nashville session guitarist Dave Cleveland, we're going to bring you a huge dose of encouragement as it pertains to the journey of a Christian guitarist. To give you a bit of background on what you're going to experience if you're willing to listen to the audio version of today's episode, I've had the privilege of teaching guitar workshops at the Christian Musician Summit here in the Pacific Northwest for fifteen years. Each time I've been invited to teach, I've brought topics related to rhythm guitar, fretboard knowledge, chords, the capo and more, all with a view to equipping Christian guitarists to develop their skills for worship leading and songwriting. My first year at the CMS was 2007, and after road-testing a lot of my teaching concepts for over a decade, I intentionally launched GuitarSuccess4U in 2019. It was there that I began to draw like-minded people into a community where music is a language, guitar is a dialect, and where we work diligently with joy to expand our vocabulary.I'm always growing as a guitarist and as a musician, and my desire to expand my vocabulary is constant. So, at this year's CMS, I was intrigued by a workshop offered by Nashville guitar session player Dave Cleveland. It was all about capos and alternate tunings, both of which I leverage on a pretty regular basis. What followed was unexpected: Dave actually invited me to help him teach the class. With eager onlookers, we delved into multiple capo positions and tunings, leveraged the CAGED System, and called out Nashville Numbers so we could work in tandem.I like to bring a plan, but in this case, there was very little structure, which actually allowed us to explore musical frontiers I didn't even know were possible.Well, I told my tribe of guitarists about this experience and I invited Dave to be on a Zoom call with us to debrief that class, and he accepted. Dave is a gentleman and a scholar, the first-call session guitar player in Nashville, having played on countless commercials, in movies, and on major albums with people like Steven Curtis Chapman, Miley Cyrus, Twila Paris, Lauren Daigle and more. Over his 32-year career, Dave has recorded over 30,000 songs. He graciously granted me permission to share some segments from the Zoom call we hosted recently inside the membership. Typically, I keep these kinds of treats for members only, but I felt like it would be a great way to give you, our listeners here at Guitar Serious Fun, a window into what goes on when we gather for a Zoom call discussion with a guest expert. What you'll sense almost immediately about Dave is that he's super chill, very encouraging, extremely knowledgeable, generous with his ideas, and really, just a brother in the Lord that you're going to love spending a little time with. This was a call where I invited my Guitar Successors, as I like to call them, to type their comments and questions into the chat, so we could cover as much ground as possible during our brief time with Dave. Here's where I link to my YouTube video that captured the visual aspect of the experience. Now that you've heard a bit of the audio from the workshop, I want to encourage you to listen to the podcast version of today's episode to enjoy a distilled audio excerpt from the Zoom call where Dave fielded a variety of questions and offered some tremendous encouragement to our community. Well, I hope you gleaned a few things from our discussion with Dave. I smiled quite a lot as we enjoyed that short and sweet time together. As you might imagine, I seek out several experts who join us on Zoom over the course of each year, and each expert brings a different bit of wisdom. We've had Jesse Ferguson talking about in ear monitors and how to leverage them. We've had Jeff Sandberg, a world-class saxophonist, talking about improvisation. We've had Brian Reding, a multi-instrumentalist and producer, talking about the art of listening. We've had Jerry Roberts, a slow-handed Eric Clapton-esque electric guitarist talking about weaving electric and acoustic together for worship and designing an app-driven pedal board. We've had Jeremy Calvin, a wunderkind aux percussionist talking about creativity for solid rhythm grooves with percussion and guitar. We've had Adam Bollen, a super intuitive bass player talking about arranging, rehearsing, and pedal effects. We've had Ron Mallory, a highly published arranger and keyboard player, talking about relevant music theory and transposition. We've had Dr. Gordon Myco, a chiropractor and health coach, talking about health, posture, diet, and longevity for our musical journeys. We've had the Master Luthiers of Mike Lull's Guitar Works talking about the craft of building, repairing and caring for guitars. And we've got more coming up. Does this pique your interest at all? Leave a comment if it does. And if you're rarin' to go and want to find your people, meet guest experts, and most of all, fulfill your potential as a Christian Guitarist, don't wait any longer.Head on over to GuitarSuccess4U.com to begin your journey with us and take your guitar playing to the next level. Tapping Into Brian Barnwell's Brain WRITTEN by Josh Molina Brian Barnwell greeted me with a cup of coffee. “Do you have any Stevia and cream? I asked. (Yes, I am a lightweight and I like my coffee sweet). “We don't have any Stevia,” he said. “But would you like a scoop of ice cream in it?” Oh yeah, now he was talking my language. “You put ice cream in coffee,” I asked? “Every morning,” Barnwell said confidently. “That's what we do.” Two cups and probably four scoops later, Barnwell and I had taken a ride down memory lane, talked old and contemporary politics, and gushed a little about each other. I guess time makes us all wiser. In the context of journalist and elected official, Barnwell and I were total frenemies. It's my job to hold elected officials accountable. It's the elected official's job to avoid me, or try to charm me, either ingratiate themselves or run away. I've seen it all. I am a pro; I can read their tactics like Patrick Mahomes reads defenses. I covered Barnwell hard, for a variety of reasons. We got along most of the time. He had no problem telling me when I got something wrong. I was professional colleagues with his wife, Camilla Barnwell, so I had a side connection to him as well. But no matter what happened within the context of the dance that journalists and elected officials often partake in, one thing was always clear: I had great respect for his intellect. I don't like saying one person is “the smartest,” or “the best,” or anything like that because it just offends everyone else. But I will say this: Barnwell's intellectual acumen is unmatched on land use, planning and civic government topics. He is well-read, possesses an unreal memory for big and small details, and is generally a fun and charming guy. So after a few months of courting, Barnwell finally said yes to my request for a podcast. I ran into him at the recent screening of Citizen McCaw at the Marjorie Luke Theatre, put on by Newsmakers with Jerry Roberts. At 6 feet 2, Barnwell lumbered over to me and said: “You asked me about a podcast. I want to do it. Let's make it happen.” So here it is, Barnwell and I, from the comfort of his Westside bungalow home, talking for 90 minutes (sorry, I know many of you want shorter podcasts) about housing, or “housing-transportation,” as Barnwell describes it, district elections, high-speed rail, elections, and names such as former mayor Helene Schneider, and councilmember Iya Falcone. Barnwell served on the City Council, Planning Commission and a variety of other commissions and volunteer boards. He still has a lot to offer, as is clear in this episode of Santa Barbara Talks with Josh Molina Check out this 90-minute conversation. I know you'll learn a lot. Hillary Clinton is the latest high profile Democrat to come to Senator Dianne Feinstein's defense, saying she should not resign despite her health challenges. Meanwhile, some members of the House, in particular, continue to call for Feinstein to step down, especially after her return to Washington demonstrated just how frail she's become. The 89 year-old Feinstein is recovering, slowly, from shingles, which brought on a form of encephalitis and another disorder that caused some facial paralysis and hearing loss. She insists she can still do the job Californians elected her to do, and is determined to serve out the rest of her final term, while three prominent Congressional Democrats run to succeed her. Governor Newsom has promised to appoint a Black woman to finish Feinstein's term if she is unable to, and now there's speculation that Oprah Winfrey could be on his short list of possible caretaker Senators if it comes to that. But Feinstein says that won't be necessary, because she isn't going anywhere until the end of 2024. For more on this, KCBS political reporter Doug Sovern, along with KCBS Radio's Megan Goldsby and Bret Burkhart spoke with Jerry Roberts, longtime City Hall reporter in San Francisco. He covered Feinstein when she was a Supervisor and then Mayor. Jerry went on to be Managing Editor of the San Francisco Chronicle, co-founded the political website CalBuzz and these days, he runs Newsmakers with Jerry Roberts, covering politics in Santa Barbara. But most importantly for our discussion, he wrote the definitive biography of Dianne Feinstein, “Never Let Them See You Cry,” which was published in 1994.

Unlike a lot of snow and avalanche professionals, Jerry Roberts spent a fair amount of time hanging out around San Francisco, soaking up the Buddhist-infused literary scene of the '60s. He developed a deep affection for some very old school snow enthusiasts: Basho, Issa, Buson, and other 18th-century Japanese poets. He went on to a lengthy career forecasting for the Colorado Avalance Information Center, the Colorado Department of Transportation, even Quentin Tarantino. Along the way, he's written a number of his own wintry haiku. He joins us to share stories and wisdom from a lifetime in the snowy mountains, as well as a few poems.
Transcript included below…When I was about 11 years old, my parents purchased a beautiful grandfather clock for our family. It became a constant presence in three different homes where we lived, over the course of almost four decades. Now this beautiful heirloom is in my home. This clock has tremendous historical significance, and I am honored to have it where I and my immediate family can enjoy looking at it.Every time the clock chimes the quarter hour, a wave of childhood memories washes over me and I'm instantly transported to the three different homes and the seasons of life I lived there. The chimes are a gentle undercurrent, and a reminder of the swiftness of time. Now I get to make new memories as the gentle ticking marks the seconds, minutes and hours, because it's in our front room. But getting this clock into my house was no small endeavor. In addition to gifting it to me, my parents arranged for a clock moving and repair company to make sure it was carefully transported from their house to mine. When the delivery man arrived at our home with the clock, he knocked on our door and presented his business card. I looked behind him to see if there was a small crew of assistants ready to help him move the clock up our front steps. There was no one else with him.He got to work, and my family watched in awe as he brought the clock up the steps on a specialized hand truck. I couldn't bear to watch, but they all said it was accomplished smoothly. This clock is over seven feet high and very heavy, so this was no small feat.Once he had the clock carefully placed where we wanted it, he measured it with precision and made sure the angle was a perfect 45 degrees in the corner. Then, he proceeded to install the pendulum, the counterweights, and the wood-turned adornments of the crown. He did this all very carefully with special gloves on, in a way that made me think of those people who bring out expensive musical instruments at an auction, or the trained hands of a surgeon with his tools. He was a soft-spoken man in his forties, and as we chatted, it was clear that he was a part of a multi-generational family business that specialized in the transport and repair of clocks. I asked him how many clocks he had transported to date, and he said it was in the arena of 2500. I also asked him what the oldest clock was that he had moved, and he said it was a French clock that was at least 300 years old.Every time he spoke, it was with careful consideration, and just a touch of pride. Not arrogance, but instead great satisfaction in the good work he had leaned into over the course of his career, and the wisdom that had been passed down through generations. He wound the clock, swung the pendulum, and I watched and listened as it awoke in its new home.He gave me some brief “care and feeding” instructions, thanked me, and then departed. I remember saying something to my family along the lines of, “This was not his first rodeo.”Truly, it was not. And I was inspired as I watched him move in a manner that was, well, like clockwork. There's nothing quite as awe-inspiring to me as to witness an expert in their element. Something about watching someone do what they do, knowing that they've honed their craft for decades. A lot of these folks have paid good money for their educations, spent time apprenticing under masters of skill, learned on the job, learned the hard way, and learned from experience. When I've asked a highly experienced person a detailed question that the average person would not be equipped to answer, it's fascinating to watch them quickly mentally scroll through huge archives of wisdom that they've carefully compiled over the course of decades. This wisdom lies in what I'd call their “deep water.”And when they speak, they often speak very deliberately, because they know exactly what they're talking about.Contrast this to someone who wants to “fake it ‘til they make it,” like some of the folks we talked about in Guitar Serious Fun Episode 22 – I Don't Know…But Let's Find Out.” Those less knowledgeable people often answer quickly, perhaps offering premature ideas that haven't fully formed yet, which are basically pretty telling, as they reveal their lack of experience.I love the intentional response from an expert, because they don't just know the answer to my question – they can often offer application of what they know to a very specific scenario. Would you like to hear about some musical experts I've crossed paths with? Allow me to give you a window into our Guest Expert roster at GuitarSuccess4U. As you may know, this is an online guitar experience unlike any other.Through this membership, in addition to sharing from my almost three decades of music and guitar experience, which spans from stage to studio, I love to bring in guest experts that have guitar “touch points.” These experts can teach way beyond what I know, especially in their areas of expertise, and they enrich the learning experience for my members, on multiple levels.Jerry Roberts is our guest expert on the subject of electric guitar. A multi-instrumentalist, Jerry is someone I've collaborated with extensively in the worship environment. As a music teacher and onstage professional, Jerry has shown me his detailed thought process behind designing and operating his app-driven electric guitar pedal board. With a slow hand and highly tasteful style of playing, akin to Eric Clapton, Jerry has an excellent command of the fretboard, coupled with an ear that guides him well as he improvises, creates solos, and cultivates his own original sound, which is steeped in classic rock.In our expert interview, Electric Guitar 101, Jerry talks about how his original sound, combined with the effects he uses, has allowed him to offer melodic lead guitar lines and rhythm swells in multiple musical environments, especially in combination with worship leaders or band leaders who play the guitar.Jeremy Calvin, whom I've talked about in Guitar Serious Fun Episode 31, “Called Up or Settled Down,” is also a multi-instrumentalist with an emphasis in Aux Percussion. As you may know, the prefix aux is an abbreviation of the word auxiliary, which comes from the Latin word auxilium, which means to help or support.Jeremy knows the art of collaboration so intuitively, that I almost always observe him listening to the groove even before he joins the musical conversation. His “help” is much more than that. His artistic percussive accents really authenticate the grooves he supports. And he unpacks his process in our expert interview, detailing his approach to supporting rhythm guitarists in particular.Dr. Gordon Myco, a chiropractor, health coach, and bodybuilding adjudicator, is highly aware of the integral systems of the human body, and how health, posture, and diet are all related. He doesn't just consider the vertebrae and the neck – he looks at the entire skeletal system and muscular system. He also talks about how the food we eat either leads to toxicity or nutrition. In our interview, I take time to ask Dr. Myco to evaluate my standing and seated postures as I play the guitar. Although eye-opening and a little bit humbling, these have impacted the way I spend my many hours playing the instrument.Brian Reding, whom I also mentioned in Guitar Serious Fun Episode 31, “Called Up or Settled Down,” is a highly gifted multi-instrumentalist and producer with a tremendous amount of guitar experience in multiple styles. Speaking from the perspective of a listener and a producer, Brian talks in our interview about how essential ear training is, and with some seriously fun games I spring on him, we put his ears to the test…and he does not disappoint.Jason Edwards is a highly sought-after drummer who teaches, performs, produces, records and collaborates with some serious players. I sought out Jason because I can count on one hand the number of drummers I've played with who had an absolutely solid rhythm pocket…and he is one of them. Add to this the fact that he can summon a variety of groove styles in multiple time signatures on the spot, and Jason was the perfect choice for our expert interview.Complete with a variety of sticks and rhythmic implements, Jason talks about the skillful art of keeping time, trading out leadership roles in a band, and how a guitarist can set up his or her drummer for success. He had mentioned to me in passing that he had even played the drum kit once with chopsticks, so in the interview, I handed him some chopsticks, and we played…you guessed it…the song “Chopsticks,” with me on the guitar. He knocked it out of the park.Hearing words from Jason in our interview about how important it is to hone my guitar craft alone and in a band setting, really challenged and sharpened me.Ron Mallory, a highly published composer and arranger (like hundreds of published works), plays multiple instruments as well, and the keyboard is the vantage point from which he sees a lot of the music he plays. Having served with Ron in multiple settings from stage to studio, Ron has shown me what a true gentleman and a scholar can be like in a musical setting. In our interview, he talks about conquering multiple keys, leveraging the circle of fifths, and doing less at times, to help create artistic contrast, especially when collaborating with a guitar player. I'm always guided to new levels of musical excellence when I interact with Ron. And by the way, Ron has a tiny soundbyte of tremendous wisdom in Guitar Serious Fun Episode 23, “Don't Stop Playing Your Guitar.”Adam Bollen is a ridiculously gifted bass player, whom I also included a tiny soundbyte from in Guitar Serious Fun Episode 11, “Guitar Player, Guitar Owner, or Both?”As a hobbyist, Adam has surpassed several professional bass players I've worked with in terms of skill, and his approach to musicianship always edifies my guitar playing, especially in a worship setting. Adam leverages technology, skills, music reading chops, and a solid ear to coax some of the most tasteful bass lines from his bass that I've ever heard.Lastly, the masters at Mike Lull's Guitar Works, whom I've talked about in a few different episodes, include President Spencer Lull and Master Luthier, Tom Albert. These guys have an awareness of guitars that far surpasses the average set of eyes and ears. When a guitar is brought in for repair or setup, they take this instrument into their hands and look it over thoroughly…and within minutes, they are able to assess what the guitar needs, and what will be involved with restoring it.Having had my guitars re-fretted, Plekked, and set up by these gifted artisans since the year 2000, I can tell you firsthand that they have a level of experience that promotes nothing but trust from me. And as they talk about in the interview, they want their customers to love playing their instruments, so anything they can do to repair or fine-tune them can lead to this. So, as I look back over these eight interviews, each of which I was honored to coordinate, I am in awe at the amount of wisdom that these generous experts have, and were willing to share. Four of the interviews were hosted in my “man cave” studio, three were interviews “on location,” and one was hosted on Zoom as we transcended a couple of time zones. And now the interviews are safely captured in the GuitarSuccess4U portal. Each time I go back and watch or listen to these interviews, I smile. I smile because I know that others who experience the interviews will also be blessed and uplifted, as well as sharpened and equipped, through the knowledge that they have offered. Closing ThoughtsWell, today has been quite the episode. I hope you've been uplifted and perhaps offered some insights for your guitar journey. In addition to hearing examples of how experts in their field can be called upon for wise counsel with regard to their interaction with the guitar, you've also been offered a window into the bonus guest expert interviews that are waiting for you inside the GuitarSuccess4U portal. Incidentally, if you want in to that portal, it's your move. The membership is waiting for you at GuitarSuccess4U.com. What are the common denominators with all of these experts? They all intersect in one way or another with the guitar, and they each speak with…the voice of experience. I'd also add that as they do their good work, it's not uncommon for them to experience serious fun.I'm grateful for the opportunity to seek the counsel of these experts, because I'm a better musician for it, and perhaps a more disciplined, healthier, well-rounded person, to say nothing of how well I steward my guitars. These experts have provided some of the wisest counsel I've received in my career.Proverbs 15:22 Says, “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisors, they succeed.” I really don't have anything to add to that. A fun conversation with an award winning author and publisher. If you are a writer just starting your journey, or an established author, there are nuggets to glean in this episode! Author Roger Leslie is a scholar in the fields of education and success. His award-winning books cover multiple genres of nonfiction and fiction. His memoir, My First Last Year and FLY (First Last Year) courses inspire people to live their dream. For seasoned and aspiring writers, Leslie drew from decades as an author, publisher, editor, and writing coach to move them From Inspiration to Publication. ABOUT Roger I spent my childhood in Michigan loving books and movies. At age 13 those creative diversions ignited an idea. I would be an author. Immediately I took inspiration to action and wrote my first novella. Immersed in the creative process, I sensed to my very soul that I was on a journey of a lifetime. After moving to Texas with my family when I was a teenager, I set my sights on being a novelist. At the time I didn't know if I had the talent to achieve my lofty dreams. But the passion I felt to succeed ran deep enough to sustain me through years of disappointing rejections and fateful detours. Writing consistently throughout my high school years proved empowering. Setting a goal to write my first novel before graduation gave my life a driving purpose and ultimately created my first social identity. To my peers I became “the guy who wrote the book.” Initially, my undergraduate degree focused exclusively on creative writing. But advice from a career counselor proved serendipitous. I changed my major to English education, which expanded my professional prospects to include glorious decades as a teacher, professor, and school librarian. That change in major also resulted in my enrolling in a class where I met my husband, Jerry Roberts. Being a teacher and school librarian fed my passion to write. During that time I earned a Master's degree in creative writing and a doctorate in education. All the while I kept writing and submitting. Over time I expanded what I wrote. Early successes included getting teaching articles published in prestigious journals, winning a prize for a play, and having my first nonfiction book locally published. Finally, multiple publishing successes converged to create a career-paving trajectory. In a single year I became a reviewer for Booklist and received contracts from different publishers for a novel and three nonfiction books. Those diverse opportunities initiated an eclectic writer's journey. I became open to writing in an array of genres, both nonfiction and fiction. As a result I found more publishing success through large, medium, and small publishing houses. I even won multiple local, state, and national awards. Then my agent shared an insight that dug meaningful new paths in my writer's journey. She said I did too much. My published works were so diverse she didn't know how to market me. What she saw as my limitation instead made me uniquely qualified to help others. Years as an award-winning educator paved the way for international speaking engagements. Writing success in so many genres empowered my editing with insights from a writer's perspectives for many types of fiction and nonfiction. Being published through major, medium, small presses, and then running my own publishing house gave me first-hand expertise to coach others to writing and publishing success. https://rogerleslie.com/ From Inspiration to Publication - Available on Amazon Learn more about your host, Kim Lengling at: https://kimlenglingauthor.com --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/kim-lengling1/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/kim-lengling1/support

99: How Writing A Book Has Changed My LifeHow writing a book changed my life and why writing one can change yours too. Writing a book will teach us a lot of things. Patience, hard work, and desire to see the finished products. Writing a book has changed my life in so many ways, but I think my favorite has to be how it has given me instant credibility, given me a platform to talk to people about my business. 02:22- 02:44 Not the best book in the world but mine and it has changed my life. It has given me instant credibility, given me a platform to talk to people about my business and coaching services. It's been a fun and rewarding process to see my name in print. To be honest, it's been awesome to my ego too. 02:49- 02:51 I wrote personal branding secrets and then later, 02:55- 03:06 I wrote Make It Happen. Ways to get from stuck to unstoppable without changing who you are and even if no one believes in you or stands by you. Set an intention to be a published author04:19- 04:27 The actual desire to be a published author is hugely important because without that burning desire it might not ever happen. 04:28- 04:35 The fear and procrastination will derail you, so if you keep your eye on the ultimate goal, you'll be able to get through it.04:36- 04:58 See yourself with your book on bookshelves. See yourself signing books and having sales coming in, again and again. Imagine what your cover would look like. Visualize being interviewed on Ellen talking about your book, Oprah talking about your book. Put a mock cover on your dream board.5:00- 05:29 I set an intention to write a book but I didn't have an idea. So I asked the Universe for a million-dollar book title. And then within a week, I came up with Make it Happen. Ways to go from stuck to unstoppable without changing who you are and even nobody believes in you and stands by you. Time will tell if it's going to make me a million dollars, but the Universe at least gave me a great idea.Find creative ways to get it done fast05:34- 05:54 There's no need to spend years writing your book. Nine months, eight months to write your book. Remember at school when you would pull an all-nighter, put in you midnight oil, and get your 5000-word essay done? Well, channel that part of yourself.Decide how you're going to publish it08:14- 08:30 There are so many different options on how to get published and although I'm not going to trash traditional publishing, I love Jerry Roberts, to be honest, it can seem like a whole lot of work for a small chance, especially if you're just starting out.09:01- 09:17 I love the sense of self-publishing because I'm all about an instant book author. Once your cover is out, it's instant self-gratification. It's out now. It's out immediately. 09:21- 09:42 You could literally have a book up in 48 hours. I'm not kidding. Even up to this week, the end of this week your book will be out. The downside is that there is a lot of crap being published out there. That is why it's important to do it well. Black Lives Matter. So why do so many christianised people amplify only those voices that allow them to opt out of the movement? We look at itching ears, the fiction of public acts and private lives, the link between individual freedom and the Protestant Reformation, the Kingdom that is not of this world and the politics of Heaven. The conversation with Stephen, Sean and Chris starts at 36:20It takes time, money and talent to produce these podcasts. March 2014 Captain Jerry Roberts MBE, one of Bletchley Park’s last Codebreakers, died this week at the age of 93. Jerry was one of the original members of The Testery working on cracking Tunny, the German High Commands code, used by Hitler & his top Generals. Their work warned the Russian’s of The Kursk Offensive, allowing them to defend until the Germans called off, what would be their last major offensive on the Eastern Front. Winston Churchill said “Stalingrad was the end of the beginning, but the Battle of Kursk was the beginning of the end”. In this Bletchley Park Podcast Extra, we bring you the interview we recorded at Jerry’s home, in February 2013 after being awarded an MBE. It is followed a short interview Katherine recorded on the day he received his MBE from Her Majesty The Queen. Sir John Scarlett KCMG OBE, Chairman, Bletchley Park Trust, paying tribute to Jerry said: “Captain Jerry Roberts MBE was a true gentleman and - to the last days of his long life - an outstanding ambassador for Bletchley Park. In World War 2 he was a key member of the team who deciphered the most secret communications of Hitler and his top commanders, work of incomparable importance for the outcome of the War. Unfailingly modest about his own achievements, he was committed to the end to achieving recognition for the work of his colleagues and the contribution of all those who worked at Bletchley Park. He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with his devoted wife, Mei." Picture: ©mubsta.com #bletchleypark, #bpark, #tunny, #ww2, #jerryroberts #wonder88

February 2013 In this episode we have the full interview with Captain Jerry Roberts, who was today (28/02/13) awarded an MBE by Her Majesty The Queen in honour of his 4 year campaign for more recognition for Alan Turing, Bill Tutte and Tommy Flowers. Jerry shares with us what it was like to work in The Testery breaking coded messages from Hitler, his memories of “a great man” Bill Tutte, working as a War Crimes Investigator and setting up the first Marketing company in post war South America. Captain Roberts was one of four founding members of the Testery, named after its leader, Ralph Tester. This team was tasked with breaking Germany’s highest-level cipher system, Lorenz, known by the Codebreakers as Tunny. Captain Roberts worked in the Testery from its inception in October 1941, after Bill Tutte made the first break into the Lorenz system, until the end of the war in 1945. February 2013 This month we talk to Captain Jerry Roberts about being awarded an MBE and his 4 year campaign for more recognition for Alan Turing, Bill Tutte and Tommy Flowers. We have an update from CEO Iain Standen on the Heritage Lottery Funded restoration programme. Also, an exclusive interview with another Bletchley Park Veteran Nancy Jackson, who worked in the Newmanry, the section led by Alan Turing’s friend and mentor Max Newman. A message from mcfontaine This month’s episode has been late due to the death of my step-dad, Mick Chalkley. There was a really nice connection for me between Bletchley Park and Mick as during World War 2 he served in the Fleet Air Arm. A large part of which was on escort duty on amongst others, the Russian and Malta convoys. I explained to him the work that Bletchley Park did during the war, how by reading U-Boat Enigma traffic they could re-route convoys away from attack. This was something he didn’t know and like me, had no doubt that they must have helped to keep him safe and to live through the war. This episode is dedicated to his memory.
