fWotD Episode 2764: Battle of Cane Hill Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 28 November 2024 is Battle of Cane Hill. The battle of Cane Hill was fought between Union and Confederate forces during the American Civil War on November 28, 1862, in northwestern Arkansas, near the town of Cane Hill. Confederate Major General Thomas C. Hindman had made an abortive offensive into southwestern Missouri from Arkansas earlier in the year, but had withdrawn to Arkansas. Union troops under Brigadier General James G. Blunt had followed Hindman into northwestern Arkansas, and the Confederate general saw an opportunity to attack Blunt while his division was separated from the rest of the Union Army of the Frontier. Hindman then sent a force under Brigadier General John S. Marmaduke to Cane Hill, which was also known as Boonsboro, to collect supplies. In early November, a detachment of Blunt's command led by Colonel William F. Cloud defeated a small Confederate force commanded by Colonel Emmett MacDonald in the Cane Hill area. After MacDonald's defeat, Marmaduke remained in the Cane Hill area with his force. Blunt moved to attack Marmaduke on November 27. The Confederates expected the Union attack to come up the Cincinnati Road, but it instead followed the Ridge Road and then the Fayetteville Road. Cloud's men led the Union advance and made contact with Colonel Joseph O. Shelby's Confederate troopers on the morning of November 28. Shelby withdrew from the Cane Hill area after an artillery duel, and Marmaduke reformed his line in the Newburg area.Due to the Union artillery advantage, the Confederates fell back from Newburg to an elevation known as Reed's Mountain. Shelby conducted a rear-guard action by having a series of small forces confront the Union before falling back and allowing the next line to engage. The Confederates made a stand at Reed's Mountain, but were forced to withdraw. Blunt continued to pursue, and several miles south of the John Morrow house, Confederate troops led by Colonel Charles A. Carroll laid an ambush for Blunt's leading elements. The Confederates then presented a flag of truce as a ruse to give themselves time to withdraw from the field. In early December, Hindman moved to attack Blunt's force, but Union reinforcements from Springfield, Missouri, under the command of Brigadier General Francis J. Herron arrived in time to aid Blunt. The ensuing Battle of Prairie Grove was fought on December 7. While the outcome of the fighting was inconclusive, Hindman withdrew from the field and the Union retained control of Missouri and northwestern Arkansas. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Thursday, 28 November 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Battle of Cane Hill on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Aria.

In this episode, John Pinna interviews Dr. John Andrew Morrow, a Muslim academic and author. Dr. Morrow shares his spiritual journey starting from a young age, studying various religious scriptures and ultimately embracing Islam after being deeply moved by the Quran. He highlights the pivotal role of the Covenant of the Prophet Muhammad with the monks of Mount Sinai in shaping his understanding of Islam. The conversation delves into Dr. Morrow's research on the covenants of the Prophet, which involved tracking down manuscripts from various sources and collaborating with other scholars. These covenants, recognized by various Islamic dynasties throughout history, emphasize the protection and rights granted to Christian communities under Muslim rule. The discussion also touches upon the historical context of early Islamic conquests, the coexistence of Muslim and Christian communities, and the importance of archeological evidence in understanding the spread of Islam. 2019: From very early on, Jack Kirby and Stan Lee sparred about credit for who did what. As editor, Lee always got the final word and took whatever credit he wanted. Usually, that meant words by Lee, art by Kirby. John Morrow, who joins me today, is the man behind Twomorrows Publishing, which just produced his new book, "Kirby & Lee: Stuf’ Said! The Complex Genesis of the Marvel Universe, In Its Creators’ Own Words." He is also the editor of the "Jack Kirby Collector," now in its 25th year.

On April 28th 2018, The Husayniah Islamic Society of Seattle sponsored an interfaith educational event called Husayn Day. The event was a reflection upon Husayn, the martyred grandson of the Prophet Mohammad. Rather than bow to his oppressors, he, along with 72 family members were killed in Karbala, Iraq in 680 CE. He is considered a martyr for justice, truth, love, and resistance. He is a leading figure in Shia Islam and his death is mourned each year by between 15 and 20 million pilgrims who visit his shrine during the forty-day period of mourning from Ashura to Arbaeen. In the these two episodes, you will hear speeches from the presenters on Husayn and the yearly pilgrimage to his shrine. The presenters include, Dr. John Morrow, Sister Nicole Correri, Sheikh Fadhel Al-Salani, Sheik Ahmed Bahriny, Mohammad Baig, and me, John Shuck. The west is ignorant about Islam and, in particular, Shia Islam and the person of Hussain. Twenty million people visit his shrine each year. This the largest annual gathering of human beings on planet Earth. Yet, Western media ignores it. In this episode you will hear more about Husayn, and how he is for those who are devoted to him, a door to truth and justice, and how his sacrifice revealed the true Islam, the Islam of love. In this episode you will hear from… Sheikh Fadhel Al-Sahlani. Shiekh Al-Sahlani is the current leader of the Al-Khoei Foundation in New York. Sheik Ahmed Bahriny. Sheik Ahmed Bahriny is the resident imam and religious director of the Islamic Education Center in Potomoc, Maryland. Maulana Mohammad Baig. Maulana Baig leads the Alwalayah Community in Montclair, California. You will also hear a speech I gave at the event.

Scholars and religious leaders explore the impact of Husayn and the devotion of the 15-20 million pilgrims who visit his shrine each year. Part 1 of 2. This is a rebroadcast of an episode that originally aired in May 2018. I will be attending the pilgrimage to Arbaeen from Najaf to Karbala, Iraq, at the end of October, with a Maulana Mohammad Baig, courtesy of the Husayniah Islamic Society of Seattle. On April 28th 2018, The Husayniah Islamic Society of Seattle and Global Initiatives co-sponsored an interfaith educational event called Husayn Day. The presenters include, Dr. John Morrow, Sister Nicole Correri, Sheikh Fadhel Al-Salani, Sheik Ahmed Bahriny, Maulana Mohammad Baig, and me, John Shuck. The West is largely ignorant about Islam and, in particular, Shia Islam and the person of Hussain. Twenty million people visit his shrine each other. This the largest annual gathering of human beings on planet Earth. Yet, Western media ignores it. According to an article in the Huffington Post by Sayed Mahdi al-Modarresi, “World's Biggest Pilgrimage Now Underway, And Why You've Never Heard of it!” Why you have never heard of it probably has to do with the fact that the press is concerned more with negative, gory, and sensationalized tabloids, than with positive, inspiring narratives, particularly when it comes to Islam. You will hear about it on Progressive Spirit. In this first episode you will hear from Dr. John Morrow, full professor, author, senior research scholar, public speaker and activist. He is author of a number of numerous articles and books including The Covenants of the Prophet Muhammad with the Christians of the World. Dr. Morrow provided a stirring poetic spiritual biography of Husayn. You will also hear from Sister Nicole Correri. She is the preeminent female Shia speaker in North America. She will begin a Ph. D. program at Boston University in the Fall. Sr. Correri told the importance of Zainab, Husayn’s sister, and described her experience attending Arbaeen. Video of the entire conference.
Youth is often the time when we are always looking for new ideas, experiences, information, discovery, and greater personal development. As we get older, we tend to "Settle" in our ways. Beware The Lazy Mind. If you don't keep your mind stimulated, it will slowly break down. This will cause a whole life domino effect. I have found my life is much better and healthier because I challenge mind every day. It's true! Your mind is your greatest asset, but if you neglect your mind, it will take down the wrong path. Let's have a conversation.
I have learned that a lazy mind can lead you to an unhealthy lifestyle. Alzheimer's has taught me this. I am living proof that our minds should and need to be exercised, stimulated, and challenged every day. Join me and Mark Gai as we talk about the "Traps of a Lazy Mind" and how to beat them. Here's to your better health.
Time Codes: 00:24 - Introduction 02:19 - Setup of interview 04:13 - Interview with Peter Normanton 55:17 - Wrap up 55:53 - Contact us On past episodes of The Comics Alternative, the Two Guys have discussed comics fandom and zine culture quite often, although usually the context surrounds American fan activity. But as Derek points out in his conversation with Peter Normanton, he has little knowledge of fanzines outside of the states, particularly within the United Kingdom. That's why Peter's latest book, It Crept from the Tomb, was such an enlightening read. Normanton was the publisher and editor of the UK horror zine, From the Tomb, which began in 2000 and ran for over 20-some issues. Several years ago, he was approached by Roy Thomas about the possibility editing a collection from the pages of his horror zine, and the result was The Best of From the Tomb, which came out from TwoMorrows Publishing in 2012. And then more recently, John Morrow asked Peter about a second “best of” collection surrounding From the Tomb…and this request eventually became Peter's newest release, It Crept from the Tomb. In his conversation with Peter Normanton, Derek talks with his guest about his time as an editor and publisher, the history of comics in in the UK, his love of the horror genre and comics fandom, and the many challenges he faced in putting out a fanzine over the years. NOTE: Over the course of Derek's conversation with Peter, they experienced occasional problems with the internet connection. Peter lives in northwest Britain, and at times the connection on Skype was sketchy. So apologies in advance for the several breaks and momentary silences that are noticeable on Peter's track. Twenty million people visit his shrine each other. This the largest annual gathering of human beings on planet Earth. Yet, Western media ignores it. In this episode you will hear more about Husayn, and how he is for those who are devoted to him, a door to truth and justice, and how his sacrifice revealed the true Islam, the Islam of love. In this episode you will hear from… Sheikh Fadhel Al-Sahlani. Shiekh Al-Sahlani is the current leader of the Al-Khoei Foundationin New York. Sheik Ahmed Bahriny. Sheik Ahmed Bahriny is the resident imam and religious director of the Islamic Education Centerin Potomoc, Maryland. Mohammad Baig. Mohammad Baig leads the Alwalayah Communityin Montclair, California. John Shuck. Minister at Southminster Presbyterian Church, Beaverton, Oregon.
On April 28th2018, The Husayniah Islamic Society of Seattle and Global Initiatives co-sponsored an interfaith educational event called Husayn Day. The event was a reflection upon Husayn, the martyred grandson of the Prophet Mohammad. Rather than bow to his oppressors, he, along with 72 family members were killed in Karbala, Iraq in 680 CE. He is considered a martyr for justice, truth, love, and resistance. The presenters include, Dr. John Morrow, Sister Nicole Correri, Sheikh Fadhel Al-Salani, Sheik Ahmed Bahriny, Mohammad Baig, and me, John Shuck. WIHI - A Podcast from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement
Date: April 4, 2013Featuring: Dorothy Cilenti, DrPH, MPH, MSW, Senior Investigator, North Carolina Institute for Public Health; Clinical Assistant Professor, UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health John Morrow, MD, MPH, Pitt County Health Director; Incoming President, North Carolina Association of Local Health Directors Craig James, MPH, President and CEO, Highlands-Cashiers Hospital One of the reasons it’s so hard to transform US health care into something that’s safe, value-driven, and patient-centered, but also focused on improving the health of the local community, is that the responsibilities and the responsible parties have grown up completely separately. For example, it is not a naturally occurring event for the local public health department to coordinate its efforts with local hospitals… except in cases of disease outbreaks or disaster. So, imagine how rare it is to sit down together to craft overlapping goals for population health or to hatch new initiatives to keep residents from needing expensive acute care. It helps to have a convener to bring parties together… which is why we examined one such coalition that has formed in North Carolina on this WIHI.WIHI host Madge Kaplan invites you to hear what’s been going on under the auspices of the North Carolina Institute of Public Health (NCIPH), and the leadership of Dr. Dorothy Cilenti and her team. They’ve brought together local health directors like Dr. John Morrow of the North Carolina Hospital Association and hospital leaders like Craig James; leaders from community health centers; and many more, to lay the groundwork for the future of health and health care in the state. The effort has become especially relevant and pressing because of new federal requirements for nonprofit hospitals to engage in robust community health needs assessments, with help and input from other groups and agencies. These new IRS rules, and how to make them meaningful, were the focus of the March 21 WIHI, which we invite everyone to listen to as background and context for the April 4 discussion. One of the more intriguing dimensions to the work in North Carolina is its explicit mission to create multiple “community health systems” throughout the state to build and model best practices for population health. The collaborative driven by NCIPH is also working on analyzing return on investment and economic impact to “create the business case for working collectively on improving community/population health.” We’ve got a great case study to learn more about on in this show. Please listen, and make your own work on population health and community health needs assessments all the richer.

Dr. Jeffrey T. Sammons and Dr. John H. Morrow Jr. are the guests on this week's installment of The Chauncey DeVega Show where we discuss their new book "Harlem's Rattlers and the Great War". They are both starred scholars. Jeffrey T. Sammons is Professor in the Department of History at New York University and the author of Beyond the Ring: The Role of Boxing in American Society. John H. Morrow, Jr., Franklin Professor of History at the University of Georgia, is the author of several books, including The Great War: An Imperial History. It has been more than 100 years since the beginning of World War One. In many ways, much more so than is generally understood by the American general public, World War One, "The Great War," has profoundly shaped the present. This is also true of the global colorline. This conversation on The Chauncey Devega Show about World War One and one of the United States' most legendary and accomplished military units--the "Harlem Hellfighters"--is a wonderful lens into some "hidden" American history of which (unfortunately) too few are aware. In this new episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show, Chauncey and his conversation partners Jeffrey Sammons and John Morrow talk about separating myth from fact regarding World War One and African-American military service, why World War One is understudied in America's schools, how the "Harlem Rattlers" came to be known as the "Harlem Hellfighters", the struggles and unique challenges faced by The Harlem Rattlers/Hellfighters as a unit, their experiences in Europe as one of America's most distinguished and accomplished military units, as well as how Jim and Jane Crow impacted its heroes upon their return stateside. Jeffrey and John also share their opinions about how the story of the legendary Harlem Hellfighters is being adapted for a movie starring Will Smith--one that is based on a graphic novel by Max Brooks.
