The goals and resolutions kicked off at the start of the year create a high energy of action, however, if we don’t do the necessary work to clean up and clear out those things that no longer serve us, it will be very challenging for our goals to flourish. It’s time to get clear on what we really want in our lives, who we want to be and to remove all of the noise, congestion, people, events and spaces that no longer support our growth.

When a social media platform isn't working for you, do you stop using it? I read and heard from a few different sources that Pinterest was the tool to use to get more traffic to your website. I checked my website analytics and... barely any traffic. But... I wasn't using Pinterest to its full advantage. I did a couple things: joined Pinterest groups (using the http://pingroupie.com/ website where you can find relevant groups) redesigned my old blog posts to include a custom Pinterest graphic started using Tailwind to schedule started pinning more of other peoples Pins. keep learning from Pinterest-ninjas like Peg Fitzpatrick and Melyssa Griffin And then I checked my analytics soon after AND! Nothing. Well, barely anything. But I wasn't patient enough and expected results too quickly. Well I was checking my analytics the other day (not to check Pinterest, but for something else) and was pleasantly surprised when Pinterest was actually showing me some traffic. So my advice to you is, if you have been putting in a lot of work into a platform and it just isn't doing anything for you, you might want to quit. BUT, if you aren't getting any results from a platform, look at what you're doing. Is your platform completely optimized? Are you putting in enough effort to get results? Make the most of your social media platforms and make sure they are optimized to get the most out of them! Making the Most of Tools, Apps and Services to Create Visual Content for Your Blog In today’s lesson, we’re going to talk tools for creating great visual content for your blog. Over the last few weeks, we’ve been exploring different types of content that you can use on your blog. In episode 187 we talked written content, in 189 video content and back in 180 we talked about live video. Each are important types of content to be able to create for your blog - but one that is increasingly important today is visual content. When I was looking back at some screenshots of my very first blog from 2002, recently, I was amazed by how boring it looked. Not a single post in the first few months of my blogging used even an image - it was purely text. Today, the web is a much more visual place and I can’t remember the last time I published content without at least one form of visual content in it. Visual content helps you to stand out from the crowd, it gives your content personality, it makes it more useful and it increases the chances of it being shared. The great thing is that we’re operating in a time where there are so many great ways to create visual content. There are so many tools and services available to us - so many that it can be overwhelming to know which ones to use. So in today’s episode, I asked Peg Fitzpatrick to come on the show to talk to us about her favorite tools, apps and services. Over the last few weeks and episodes of this podcast, we’ve been exploring different types of content that you can use on your blog. In episode 187, we talked about written content, perhaps the most obvious type of content for a blog. In 189, I talked about video content and had a great interview with Justin Brown on how to create great video content. Even back in episode 180, we talked about live video and how to create a live video particularly for Facebook. Each of these types of content is really important to be able to create for your blog today. But one that’s increasingly important today is visual content. It can actually be used in a lot of the other types of content as well. I looked back the other day at my first blog and some screenshots of it from 2002 and I was amazed at how boring it looked. Not a single post on the front page of that blog in 2002 had even any image in it, it was purely text. Today,

We asked her here to teach us how – because we know lots of business owners feel like social media success isn't possible for someone in their “boring” business. Sometimes Marketing is a Challenge No one ever said marketing is easy. If it's not working, don't spend your time complaining – get creative and make it work! How to Know What to Share Every once in a while she'll ask fans what they want to see. Recently she discovered that they want more of the inspirational quotes. Huh! After a while you will know what works and what your audience enjoys. And remember, social media is not about sales, it is about being helpful. Can you think of a series of “Did you know?” tips that you could share? People love to share those! Think about the life of your customer – think about what will help them in multiple areas of their lives. We asked Peg, “Is there any business that is too boring for social media?” Well, social media is where people meet customers now. If you don't have a physical presence, you NEED to be online especially. Everyone has gone mobile, too, so you need to be discoverable. It's not even a choice. I am absolutely thrilled for this episode today. Not only is the topic timely and something that's on a lot of writers' minds, but I get to interview two awesome authors about their new book: The Art of Social Media. These authors are, of course, Guy Kawasaki and Peg Fitzpatrick and their book is filled with tips and techniques that will help with your social media, whether you've been on social media since it started, or are just starting out. After having the pleasure of reading an advanced copy of The Art of Social Media, I would would recommend it for newbies and social media junkies alike, though for different reasons. For newbies, this book breaks breaks things down into small, manageable pieces, so even a topic as broad (and potentially overwhelming) a social media can feel totally doable. And for social media junkies, I would recommend this book for its more overarching ideas: like how to continue to generate good content, and create an integrated social media strategy. As someone who spends a lot of time on social media, I found some great actionable tips and ideas that I've already implemented in my own social media strategy. The people who post for him would never touch on sensitive topics but Guy doesn't hesitate. People never know what to expect from him. Outsourcing social media work to digital marketing agency: If you need help with your social media, get help. But before having someone else doing your social media, look at their social media to see what they do (great content, engagement, followers) Find an independent person to work with you so they can get the flavor of who you are and what you want to do with your social media vs. going to an agency. When your social media strategy backfires: Backfires are not necessarily so bad. At least you're trying and you're going to learn something. Social media is a very forgiving place. People need to chill out. Always keep experimenting. You'll make mistakes. So what? Try stuff. Don't listen to anybody. Facebook already has all your free time. Will they get your business too? Facebook recently announced that it is releasing a business tool that will allow companies and teams to communicate internally, share files, and exchange feedback. It will look like Facebook but will compete with Yammer and other internal communications tools. I would imagine that business professionals, and especially IT professionals, might feel dubious about giving Facebook even more of their personal information. Plus, there are already companies that are doing this, and doing a great job at it I might add. It's hard to know if this will catch on or if it will flop. So, what do you think?
