This week, Andrew and Jago dive into the chaotic world of **musical rivalries**, from playground-level spats to outright murderous feuds. Highlights include: - Jago's dangerous addiction to seaside 2p machines, proving the only real winner is the arcade owner. - The eternal bitterness of Dave Mustaine (_35 million albums sold but still salty_). - Blur vs. Oasis—teen idols or commercial gladiators? - Charles Manson: misunderstood artist or murderous twit? (_Spoiler: Jago's hero worship is… complicated_). - Brian Harvey of E17's many adventures—from parking tickets to jacket potato chaos. With riffs of the week by **Will Haven** and **Jesu**, a dash of Blur's weirdness, and some surprisingly heartfelt moments (looking at you, Softplay), this episode is chaos wrapped in catchy melodies. Will Andrew and Jago choose sides in these rivalries? Spoiler: expect zero objectivity. Like, subscribe, or just send Brian Harvey your best wishes—he might need them more. ### Riffs of the week #### Jago's Riff - Will Haven - Miguel (1:55) #### Andrew's Riff - Jesu - Silver (opening) ### Jago's track choices 1. The Beach Boys - Never learn not to love VS Charles Manson - Cease to exist ### Andrew's track choices 1. I finished The Godfather, and give my final thoughts on the fucker. (You won't have to hear about it again. At least not for a long time. Probably.) I saw that movie “The Apprentice” about young Trump and Roy Cohn. I was lulled in by suggestions that it was “objective” and almost “sympathetic” to the man; spoiler alert: it wasn't. I talk about the Will Haven/Strife show at the Troubador.   *Editor's Note: The song I was referring to was “SAIL,” from AWOL Nation. Not “Air,” as I erroneously portended.

Esteemed bands like Deftones and Slipknot, who have shared the stage and collaborated with them, champion the Sacramento-based crew, recognizing their prowess in delivering challenging, aggressive metallic hardcore and sonic dissonance since their inception in 1995.Described by Metal Hammer as "bleak noise and controlled chaos" and regularly featured alongside the likes of Nine Inch Nails, Metallica, and Foo Fighters on year-end lists by Kerrang!, WILL HAVEN's music showcases muscular, agitated sounds with influences ranging from Neurosis to Jane's Addiction. Their latest 2023 release, "VII," is a natural culmination of their nearly thirty-year journey in the heavy metal world, embodying all the elements that have made them cult heroes. The band's foundation consists of lifelong friends, frontman Grady Avenell and guitarist Jeff Irwin, who met in fifth grade. Drummer Mitch Wheeler joined over two decades ago, while bassist Adrien Contreras joined in 2010. Together, they form an inseparable bond and a powerful creative force, anticipating each other's moves and reactions during the songwriting process.Adding to their dynamic lineup is Sean Bivins of Death Valley High, who joined as a touring musician in 2018 and became involved in the production of "VII," contributing synthesizer textures and additional guitar.WILL HAVEN's musical journey began with their 1997 debut, "El Diablo," where they fused doomy hardcore with experimental angst, earning recognition in the metalcore community alongside bands like Converge and Coalesce. Their sophomore album, "WHVN," released in 1999, achieved classic status among skaters, punks, and hardcore enthusiasts. Subsequent albums like "Carpe Diem" (2001), "The Hierophant" (2007), and "Voir Dire" (2011) showcased their evolution, solidifying their reputation as a pioneering force in the genre.Their 2018 album, "Muerte," exhibited the band's unwavering dedication to uncompromising and thought-provoking music, with guest appearances from notable artists like Mike Scheidt of Yob and Deftones guitarist Stephen Carpenter."VII," their latest offering, stays true to their heavy guitar-driven sound while incorporating elements from their previous works, resulting in an unapologetically metal album. The combination of down-tuned, djenty riffs with Grady Avenell's tortured screams creates a twisted yet captivating listening experience. In the ever-evolving landscape of This episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.

Dreams of Consciousness

Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 285 features an interview with Jeff Irwin of Will Haven. Will Haven were always ahead of their time. Their Nineties output mixed slow, ominous metal with extensive atmospheric sections, anticipating the "post-metal" and "doomgaze" movements that took shape in the following decade. Waves of metal sub-subgenres have peaked and subsided since then, but Will Haven are still around, and are still finding ways to stay ahead of the curve. I spoke with guitarist Jeff Irwin about how he finds the balance between "brutal" and "pretty", and how audiences reacted to the band's sound during their early years. We also discussed how an interest in numerology guided the release of the latest Will Haven album VII, and why groove is an important element of Will Haven's music. My thanks again to Jeff for speaking with me, and to you for listening. January 11th, 2000 is a very historic day in Oklahoma City concert history. Slipknot was scheduled to play the Tower Theater for the 3rd time. The first show, they didn't have enough room to play the show due to being the opener on a Coal Chamber & Machine Head Package Tour. Max & Jimmy Johnson from Element, scramble, put their heads together to figure out how to get Slipknot back to OKC to play a headlining date. They have an off day on a Monday 10 days later, resulting in Slipknot coming back to play for 400 or so people with Element & Lowlife opening the show. Max see's the popularity of the band growing & wants to bring them back through again & the January 11th, 2000 date was booked. Keep in mind, during this time, 23rd street OKC, was not the nice vibrant neighborhood that it is now! It was a dangerous place to be with vacant store fronts everywhere. We set down with Max Baker Jr. & Jeff Brownen to tell their accounts of what happned that day, where they were during the chaos, the discussions between the band management & the booking agent, & paying the band, all before Slipknot decided not to play. There were rumors for years about what happened that night, Hopefully this clears up some of the chaos & confusion & brings people back together!  Published & Aired Feb. 28th, 2000 on MTV News - "It was a bad gig, man. We learned out lesson," Corey Taylor (#8) continued. "We're never going to play there again. We're going to play a place that will hold everybody. And he will not be involved," percussionist Shawn Crahan (#6) added. https://www.mtv.com/news/k9uiqu/slipknot-has-its-say-on-oklahoma-city-concert-flap  Fast Forward 22 years later to 2022 & Max Baker Jr. was involved in a Slipknot show in Oklahoma, where his company The Baker Boys did production load in & load out.... and yes, Max was in the building, from start to finish! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome back to another very fine, if we do say ourselves, episode of Riot Act, the alternative music podcast. Steve and Remfry return with a packed show this week, part of this is because we're happy Kate Bush is going to be number one in charts around the world, part of it is because we're intrigued to see how the upcoming Taylor Hawkins tribute concerts will play out, a little because some girl did some metal shouting on America's Got Talent this week, and also because there are new records by Foals and Prison Religion to talk about. Mainly though, our show is a long one because they've seen a lot of live music in the past fortnight, and we'll tell you about it all on the show. Recent gigs from the likes of Deftones, Meshuggah, Will Haven,  Run The Jewels and Genesis Owusu all get a good going over, plus Steve attended the Download festival. The line that seems to follow Will Haven is that they are ‘your favourite band's favourite band'. Does this mean that they didn't get the commercial success they deserved? It seems like those who are into WIll Haven, are really into Will Haven and for a lot of those people, Carpe Diem was the album they first heard. But we'll talk about how touring with Slipknot influenced the song writing on this record as well as the importance of clubs such as Sacramento's, Cattle Club that treated bands well, gave them a space to play and helped form a scene that fostered bands like Deftones, Far and of course, WIll Haven. Speaking of Far, we were lucky enough to have an appearance by Jonah Matranga on the episode! Buy Jonah's book, Alone Rewinding here. Shout out to all of those unsung heroes in our lives! Love forever and ever, Bacio Death Trip

Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon presents JASON BIELER (Recorded December 21st 2020) Jason talks about his new album Songs For The Apocalypse, Saigon Kick and more. See full press release below: RELEASE DATE: January 22, 2021 Jason Bieler is prepared to release his new solo album, “Songs For The Apocalypse” this coming January. The album, aptly being released under the monkier JASON BIELER AND THE BARON VON BIELSKI ORCHESTRA, sees Bieler working with a diverse array of musical friends including: Todd LaTorre (Queensryche), Dave Ellefson (Megadeth), Devin Townsend, Pat Badger (Extreme), Butch Walker (ex-Marvelous 3), Bumblefoot (Sons of Apollo), Clint Lowery (Sevendust), Benji Webbe (Skindred), Kyle Sanders (Hellyeah) and more! When Bieler was reached for comment about the new album, he said: "I'm fairly certain they mistakenly assumed they were signing Justin Bieber based on the blockbuster deal we signed…but it's too late for them now as I'm already recording and spent an obscene amount of the budget on my Super PAC advocating that 'Lunch Is On The Way' be Subway's new official theme song." When asked about the record, Jason will only say that "it will NOT be my heaviest record yet, but it will feature a bunch of friends and musicians I love and respect. It should sound something like if NEUROSIS got stuck in a blizzard at a Wawa with SUPERTRAMP, then JELLYFISH showed up and they all decided to do Barry Manilow covers in the style of MESHUGGAH, but in waltz time with slight country underpinnings…yet accessible for the masses." Bieler then asked that Frontiers promptly get the hashtag #ChockFullOfBangers trending on Twitter. Bieler is a singer, guitarist, songwriter and producer who is also known for playing with hard rock band SAIGON KICK, which achieved a platinum single in the US with the timeless hit "Love Is On The Way" from its gold-selling album "The Lizard", which Jason also produced. Bieler also played in an early touring version of TALISMAN with Marcel Jacob and Jeff Scott Soto, as well as SUPER TRANSATLANTIC, with EXTREME bassist Pat Badger, earning them a gold record for their work on the soundtrack for the "American Pie" movie. Recently, Bieler had been touring extensively as a solo artist (until the worldwide pandemic slowed that down). The shows featured a wide array of musical styles, absurdists humor, special guests, and more. He also runs, along with his brother, a successful record label, Bieler Bros., which has worked with SKINDRED, WILL HAVEN, NONPOINT, KARNIVOOL, SIKTH, and many more. Warzone/Always - A Friend For Life (Lower East Side Crew E.P.) Youth of Today/Shout It (Break Down the Walls) Bold/Nailed To The X (Speak Out) Gorilla Biscuits/New Direction (Start Today) Judge/Bringin' It Dow (Bringin' It Down) Shelter/Enough (Perfection Of Desire) Inside Out/No Spiritual Surrender (No Spiritual Surrender) Iceburn/Iron - I (Hephaestus) Into Another/Anxious (Ignaurus) Better Than a Thousand/Motivation (Just One) Elliott/Second Story Skyscraper (U.S Songs) Primal Rite/Chapter Zero (Dirge Of Escapism) Pour finir un mix des groupes qui nous semblent important.

What do they put in the water in Sacramento? After chatting to Jonah Matranga and listening to Will Haven’s third album ‘Carpe Diem’, we’re left wondering what it is about that place which chucks out such genre bending bands like Will Haven, Far and Deftones. In our view, ‘Carpe Diem’ is the greatest expression of Will Haven’s unique songwriting talents. It’s always a struggle to accurately describe what this band sound like. Their preferred definition is ‘noise metal’ and we feel this is somewhat accurate. On this episode Chris and Weaver tell us just how important this album is to them. Weaver makes the bold assertation that this album is the distillation of everything he loves about music, and Chris professes his love for the weirdness of the record. On its surface it feels straight forward, but after a few minutes you realise that something is not quite normal. It has a feel, an atmosphere, which is all its own. Chris explains the mechanics behind their music and offers some thoughts on why this album in particular is the most complete Will Haven record yet. This podcast was once very different. We actually recorded once before then somehow manage to lose the file, and on this second go around the record had grown on Mark a lot. Initially he couldn’t really see why Chris and Weaver (and so many others) love this record, but the time in between the first take and the second had changed his mind quite dramatically, boldly stating that this record needs to go into our discography. How do you feel? Should ‘Carpe Diem’ by Will Haven be added into our discography? Listen and vote on our Facebook page.

It was founded in 1987 by owner Jordan Cooper, along with Ray Cappo of Youth of Today, with the sole intent of producing the Warzone Lower East Side Crew 7". Within the year, they put out two more releases and a limited 4th pressing of Youth of Today's Can't Close My Eyes 7", which had been originally released on Positive Force Records, just for the two of them to trade for vintage G.I.Joes and other action figures. In the first three years, the label put out 23 releases and pressed approximately 50,000 records, and it has continued to release an average of 78 albums a year.   Cappo left the business in 1988, to focus on his band Shelter and to start his own label Equal Vision Records (which he later sold to Youth Of Today roadie, former Revelation employee and friend, Steve Reddy), though his albums were still released by Revelation after that. The label put out several definitive hardcore and metalcore records in the late 1990s and early 2000s, with notable releases coming from Damnation A.D., Will Haven, Shai Hulud, Curl Up and Die, and Himsa. However, by the mid2000s, Revelation Records had seemingly fallen by the wayside, with very few releases between 2004 and 2006. However, the label is returning to its former stature as a premier oldschool hardcore label.   RECORD REVIEWS   Violent Reaction - Marching On   Originally conceived and executed as a oneman project by Tom Pimlott on the banks of the Mersey River in Liverpool, England, Violent Reaction recorded a demo in 2011, an EP in 2012 and an LP for Painkiller Records in 2013. Soon after, Tom relocated to Leeds to assemble a full band with an end result that finds the lads playing straight edge, hardcore punk with an obvious oi influence. With a lengthy American tour with their brother band The Flex under their belt, Violent Reaction is set to make their Revelation Records debut with "Marching On."   http://www.violentreaction.blogspot.com/ https://www.facebook.com/pages/ViolentReaction/177017079042937 http://www.revelationrecords.com/band/195   JUDGE - Bringin’ It Down   Judge stood tall in the face of changing times while helping to transform the musical landscape around them. Porcell, Ferraro, Siegler and Pincus may have had a list of priors that screamed “milewide X’s on the backs of your hands” (Youth of Today, Death Before Dishonor, Bold, Side by Side, Project X, Gorilla Biscuits, Young Republicans, Violent Children, Schism Records/fanzine, etc.), but even as they remained true to the edge, Bringin’ It Down moved towards a more sinister vibe and further promoted the nascent collision of metal and hardcore, while setting the stage for the likes of Integrity, Ringworm and Starkweather. This, in spite of—or maybe because of—having to re-record the album after a subpar session at Chinatown’s infamous Chung King Studios. Not bad for a band that was originally designed to be a oneoff for Ferraro’s frustration with the “Edge ’til 21 Crowd.”   https://www.facebook.com/pages/Judge/195626400586989 http://www.revelationrecords.com/release/228 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bringin%27_It_Down   DROWNINGMAN - Rock n’ Roll Killing Machine   Drowningman was a hardcore punk band from Burlington, Vermont, which was active from 1995 to 2005. Formed in the fall of 1995 by Simon Brody, Denny Donovan, Javin Leonard, Dave Barnett and Todd Tomlinson, the band was heavily influenced by a variety of bands including Deadguy, Unbroken, Shotmaker, Unwound, Sunny Day Real Estate and Promise Ring. This musical amalgamation helped to pioneer the modern metalcore and mathcore musical subgenres. The band was known for revolving membership and frequent record label changes.   A first full US tour with The Dillinger Escape Plan was embarked on to support the release.[6] Soon after returning, production of the Rock And Roll Killing Machine record began in Washington, D.C. at the Salad Days Studio. A great deal of technical difficulty was encountered; Simon Brody had claimed in interviews the stressed work environment caused the tempo of many of the songs to rush and that record lost some of the previous efforts melodic counterpoint. Still, it was well received, earning a 10/10 in respected extreme music magazine Terrorizer and finding its way into many publications' top ten lists for 2001.Aside from making regular appearances at Hellfest, Krazy Fest, Monster Fest and The New England Metal and Hardcore Festival, Drowningman began touring extensively in support of this latest record. They toured with hardcore and metal bands as varied as Earth Crisis, Glassjaw, Shadows Fall, Darkest Hour and Twelve Tribes. However, projected gigs for early 2001 were curtailed when the group lost its drummer. By May 2001 road action was resumed with regular partners Darkest Hour on the "BroDown 2001" tour.   http://drowningman.com/ http://www.revelationrecords.com/release/97 https://www.facebook.com/drowningman2014   Other Links and Info:   Our Blog: Deathwish Racing - http://deathwishracing.blogspot.com/ Become a Mountain Bike Radio Member Email Kyle Email Mountain Bike Radio
