We open season four with a discussion of Karina's bill, which hopes to formalize a process for the courts & police departments throughout Illinois to seize guns from individuals who have an order of protection entered against them. Our guest today is Danielle Parisi Ruffatto, Managing Director of the Family Law and Protective Orders Division at Ascend Justice. We discuss the horrific murder of Karina Gonzales & her daughter Daniela Alvarez at the hands of Karina's husband, Jose Alvarez, who had been ordered to stay away from the home. The protector order Karina received from the court revokes a person's FOID card, but the court and police do not have a formal process for ensuring that officers remove the gun when they are serving the order of protection. Karina's bill will formalize this process while empowering judges to approve search warrants when entering the protective order to allow officers to search homes & retrieve weapons if necessary. This episode is brought to you by Sendlane. Jose Alvarez, Co-founder of Abbott NYC, started the brand because he believes nature is healing. The company makes clean fragrances inspired by beautiful destinations. "Urban life is very stressful, and nature provides an escape for us to reconnect with ourselves," Jose says. "I also believe in the power of fragrances to transport you to a particular place, a memory, and I think we've all experienced that. When you do experience it, it's something very visceral, something very emotional. So I wanted to start a line of fragrances that transports you to the natural world." Jose grew up in Nicaragua, surrounded by what he calls "very virgin nature." He fell in love with beaches and surfing in his home country. When he moved to New York City, he found that he came to miss nature, so he began traveling across the country and fell in love with the natural destinations around the U.S. "All these destinations that I fell in love with ended up being the inspiration behind each one of our fragrances," he says. "I also wanted to ensure that we were protecting it - leaving Mother Earth in a better place than without it. So the first thing we did was ensure that all of our ingredients are sustainable." For example, for the brand's sandalwood scent, a green synthetic ingredient is used instead of actual sandalwood, a tree that takes a long time to grow. Likewise, recyclable parts of grapefruit are used for the brand's Montecito scent. Even the products' glass containers and boxes are recyclable. Another Abbott commitment is to avoid any ingredient that could adversely affect consumers. "This means no parabens, no phthalates, no hormone disruptors, no carcinogens," he says. "If you look at most perfume ingredient lists, they'll just put all the perfume in alcohol. We list our full list of ingredients. We believe consumers should know what they're putting on their skins." The idea for the fragrance line began with his travels. Jose and his co-founder Michael Pass used trips to escape their high-pressure careers. A shared passion for fragrances led them to connect the dots. In Part 1, Jose talks about: * Gratitude to his first boss out of college, which gave him a shot working on Wall Street even though he lacked the traditional Ivy League credentials. * Our emotional connection to nature. * His childhood in Nicaragua and how moving to New York changed his perspective. * How he fell in love with natural destinations around the United States. * The need to make products with sustainable ingredients. * The brand's work with charities. * The need to make scents unisex. * How he and his co-founder turned travel into a brand. * How their career success to date helped them gain an advantage with potential investors. * How he re-engaged the creative side of his energy. This episode is brought to you by Sendlane. Know one knows better than yourself what your brand or business is about, says Jose Alvarez, Co-founder of Abbott NYC, a company that makes clean fragrances inspired by beautiful destinations. "I think the most powerful brands are authentic," Jose says. "In today's world, a lot of that authenticity comes from the founders and their beliefs and values." Jose recalls the highs and lows of the brand's launch, calling it an "emotional rollercoaster." Meditation proved to be the key to coping with the pressure. "I meditate in the mornings every day," he says. "I have a journal where I journal different thoughts, different ideas. I think having a co-founder or even a person you trust is advantageous. They can bounce ideas off. I found that that's helpful." Forward momentum - "action" - is one of the most important things not only in business but in life in general, Jose says. "It's quite easy to just stay in your head and get down on things," he says. "But nothing gets done in the world, your life, or your business if you don't take action." Abbott NYC began with four fragrances: Mojave, Telluride, Sequoia, and The Cape. Jose says he likes to focus on a memory for a specific location when coming up with the scents. It can take three to six months to develop a new fragrance. In Part 2, Jose talks about: * Advice for fellow entrepreneurs starting a brand. * The importance of staying even-keeled. * How meditation helped with the stress of the startup. * The importance of having a trusted friend or co-founder to bounce ideas off of. * A look at the brand's products. * The process of creating a scent. Former professional baseball player, Jose Alvarez, shares a message focused on Romans 8:28. How can we find God in "all things"?
A Super recap of Championship Sunday in the NFL and lots more that the sports universe has to offer as Episode #236 has chock full of analysis, thoughts and opinions. On deck: (6:15) The stage is set for Super Bowl LVI as the surging, upstart Cincinnati Bengals defeat the reigning AFC Champion Kansas City Chiefs as they come back from an 18 point deficit to punch their ticket to Los Angeles in two weeks. As for the Rams, they won't have to get on an airplane and can sleep in their own beds as they exorcised some demons and beat the San Francisco 49ers. They'll be in familiar surroundings as they'll play the game in the building that they occupy at So-Fi Stadium. I'll dissect both of these conference title games. The unflappable Joe Burrow. The Bengals stifling second half defense. A bitter Chiefs loss. A hit on Patrick Mahomes legacy. Poor coaching decisions by Andy Reid/Eric Bieniemy. Another great showing by Matthew Stafford. Awful challenges by coach Sean McVay. The non interception by Jaquiski Tartt. Aaron Donald gets a pass (and saves the day in the process) Another gut punch of a Niner playoff loss over the past decade. I'll get into some of the early Super Bowl storylines, more Tony Romo broadcasting blunders, head coaching hires throughout the league and why haven't there been any black coaches promoted to run these teams? Also, some words on the retirement of Ben Roethlisberger, but what about Tom Brady? Word came out over the weekend that he's retiring, but was not made official by Brady himself. Did the reporters jump the gun on this story? (58:07) Is there trouble percolating in Brooklyn as James Harden is reportedly unhappy with the head coach and the Kyrie Irving situation? Could a trade be forthcoming? What about the ongoing saga with disgruntled Sixers All-Star guard Ben Simmons? I'll take a trip around the Association and express more Lakers dysfunction in the process. (1:06:52) The NHL is looking to exhale as the All-Star Break in Vegas is on the horizon. They'll use what was the Olympic break to make up these lost games in the first half of the season due to the coronavirus. There's a new NHL Iron Man as Flyers defenseman, Keith Yandle surpasses Doug Jarvis as the all time leader in consecutive games played. There is someone in the league who is not too far behind. Could this record be on the verge of being broken sooner than we thought? I'll see what else is happening on the ice (including the Oilers controversial signing of forward, Evander Kane) in each conference. (1:15:42) Rafael Nadal has become the all time winningest men's Grand Slam player with 21 victories as he wins his second Australian Open. Can he extend his record lead over his contemporaries in Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer as his favorite Slam tournament (French Open) is on deck? (1:20:55) David Ortiz was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers of America. Is he deserving of this achievement with the report of him using performance enhancing drugs in the past? This is the end of Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens being on the ballot. Should those two have been voted in as well? Plus, an update of the latest labor strife between the players and owners. (1:26:26) Does anybody really care about the Winter Olympics which is set to start this coming Thursday? (1:28:23) To wrap up, my Hero and Zero of the Week. CORRECTION: In discussing my Hero of the Week, I made a reference to New Orleans Pelicans guard as Jose Alvarez. My apologies, but it's Jose Alvarado. The Giants have a small power surge going in their lineup this week with two bombs by young phenom Heliot Ramos and solo shots coming from six other players. Jose Alvarez also signed with the Giants this week, further bolstering their pen with yet another lefty. Eric and Chad talk about how the Giants are building their roster with depth as a strength, since they lack some of the talent that lurks on rosters in LA and San Diego. We also look at another top 5: this time our top 5 Giants pitchers in our own lifetimes. Obviously, Bum and Timmy made our lists, but perhaps we're old enough to sneak on pitchers from the 80's? In the United States alone, roughly 1% of all births take place every year at home or at a birthing center. While this percentage may not seem significant, it does, however, represent a very real shift in the minds of more and more women away from conventional thought which tries to dictate that hospitals are the only safe places to give birth. This episodes guest is author Alejandra Alvarez and we talk about giving birth at home. Alejandra has had all four of her children at home. Her book, Born at Home is her attempt to raise the level of awareness of home births in order that women may have a safer, less invasive, and more personal childbirth experience. From her journey, countless other women have been inspired to take their own journey of giving birth at home. Alejandra Alvarez is the Vice President of Vista Hills Family Dental. In 2008 she earned an Associate of Applied Science degree in Management and Administration from the Hubbard College of Administration. One third of the U.S. population is obese, even as 50 million Americans often struggle to find enough to eat. Bruce McQuain from QandO joined us for another edition of Someone You Should Know. Tonight Bruce told us about four members of the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, "As I’ve mentioned on many segments of SYSK, while soldiers may, in a large-sense, fight for their country and what it stands for, when the bullets start flying, it is their buddies for whom they fight. Among infantrymen, there is nothing more important to them than the acceptance by and respect of their peers. Part of the Soldier’s Creed is never to leave behind a fallen comrade. On the night of March 13, 2006, Sgt. Jeremy Wilzcek, Sgt. Michael Row, Pfc. Jose Alvarez and Pfc. Gregory Pushkin, and the rest of their squad, all members of the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, risked life and limb to live up to that promise." The Someone You Should Know radio collaboration began as an extension of Matt Burden’s series at Blackfive. Thanks to Matt, Bruce is now on board and we are lucky to have him as part of the show.
