JOHN 4:1-15 JESUS MUST GO THROUGH SAMARIA

His Love Ministries

As we move into Chapter four we will see John show us another side of Jesus.  So far He has pursued his disciples and been pursued by Nicodemus, a supposedly very righteous and influential man, now He will make sure He will have a divine appointment with this very unrighteous and shunned woman of Samaria.  Just as Nicodemus did not understand what Jesus was trying to tell him, this woman will not get it either.  It is amazing how simple the Gospel is, that a little child can understand and believe, yet a grown man or woman with great intelligence will not and cannot understand it.  Have you come to that place yet where you believe?  I hope so, if not by the time this message is over I pray you will understand the truth and truly believe Jesus is the Christ, God in human flesh and ask Him to forgive you and save you. It was, more than anything else, the glory of the land of Israel, that it was Emmanuel's land Isa 8:8 He will pass through Judah, He will overflow and pass over, He will reach up to the neck; And the stretching out of his wings Will fill the breadth of Your land, O Immanuel., not only the place of his birth, but the scene of his preaching and miracles. This land in our Savior's time was divided into three parts: Judea in the south, Galilee in the north, and Samaria lying between them. Now, in this chapter, we have Christ in each of these three parts of that land. 1 When therefore the LORD knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, 1Co 1:17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect. [Jesus made and baptized] It is Christ's prerogative to make disciples, first to bring them to his foot, and then to form and fashion them to his will. These seem to be quoted as the very words which were brought to the Pharisees; and, from our Lord's conduct after this information, we may take it for granted that they were so irritated that they were determined to find an occasion to take his life; in consequence of which, leaving Judea, he withdrew into Galilee. Already the Pharisees had turned violently against John who had called them broods of vipers. It is most likely that they drew John out about the marriage of Herod Antipas and got him involved directly with the tetrarch so as to have him cast into prison. and hence they supposed they had a right to inquire into the conduct of both John and our Lord. They had on a former occasion sent to inquire of John to know by what authority he had introduced such a rite into the religion of the Jewish people. Though he feared not death and did not shrink from suffering, yet he did not needlessly throw himself into danger or provoke opposition 2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,) sent to baptize with the Holy Spirit, means that it was not the habit of Jesus. This is the last mention of baptism under the direction of Jesus till the Great Commission (Mt 28:19). It is possible that Jesus stopped the baptizing because of the excitement and the issue raised about his Messianic claims till after his resurrection when he enjoined it upon his disciples as a rite of public enlistment in his service. 3 He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee. Each time hereafter that Jesus appears in Jerusalem and Judea before the last visit there is an open breach with the Pharisees who attack him (Joh 5:1-47; 7:14-10:21,22-42; 11:17-53). 4 And he must needs go through Samaria.   Lu 2:49 And He said to them, "Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father's business?" Or, it was necessary for him to pass through Samaria; for this plain reason, and no other, it was the only proper road. Samaria lay northward of Judea, and between the great sea, Galilee and Jordan, and therefore there was no going from Galilee to Jerusalem but through this province. From Jerusalem to Galilee, through Samaria, according to Josephus, was three day's journey. The direct and usual way was to pass through Samaria. Joseph was directed by God to go to Galilee, a place of safety. 5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. The Jews, regarded Samaritans as the most abominable of mankind. So He came by going through Samaria to a city of Samaria.  Now Samaria originally was the name of the capital city of the northern kingdom.  When the kingdoms split after Solomon—Solomon was the last king of the unified kingdom (Saul, David, Solomon, and from Solomon's sons)—the kingdom split, ten tribes went north, two stayed south. The south became known as Judah.  The north as Israel. That's historic. When the kingdom was established independently in the north, Omri, who was one of the kings of the north...and by the way, all of them were evil, all of them were wicked, all of them were unrighteous, there was never a good king in the north. But Omri, according to 1 Kings 16, identified Samaria as the capital city.  Well, it didn't take long for the word Samaria to extend from the capital city to the whole region, so it all became known as Samaria. [A city called Sychar] This city was anciently called Shechem. It seems to have been situated on the foot of Mount Garazim, in the province of Samaria, on which the temple of the Samaritans was built. After the ruin of Samaria by Salmanezer, Sychar, or Sheckem, became the capital of the Samaritans. This place is remarkable in the Scriptures; 1. As being that where Abram first stopped on his coming from Haran to Canaan. 2. Where God first appeared to that patriarch and promised to give the land to his seed. 3. The place where Abram first built an altar to the Lord and called upon his name. . It was at this place that Joshua assembled the people before his death, and here they renewed their covenant with the Lord, Joshua chapter 24. After the death of Gideon it became a place of idolatrous worship, the people worshipping Baal-berith, One of the names of the city was Neapolis. Now it is the first place where the gospel is preached out of the commonwealth of Israel; so Dr. Lightfoot observes; as also that the valley of Achor, which was given for a door of hope, hope to the poor Gentiles, ran along by this city, Ho 2:15 So we read there that He came to this place, a city in Samaria called Sychar.  Probably modern Askar, still around, and located on the slope of Mount Ebal, opposite Mount Gerizim.  Do you remember Ebal and Gerizim from Deuteronomy 28?  The mountains of cursing and blessing where God warned the people, “If they obeyed they'd be blessed, if they didn't, they'd be cursed?”  That area.  Now not just near this village, and by the way, the best estimate would be that if you started in Bethany, maybe He was staying with the family of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus, we don't know. But let's assume Bethany, which is right by Jerusalem, somewhere in that area.  It's about a twenty-mile hike and when I say hike, I don't mean it's a flat walk, I mean it's an exerting kind of hike, up and down and up and down and a rigorous walk, 20 miles would take it to where the modern town of Askar is, if that's close to where Sychar is—a twenty-mile walk that day. [That Jacob gave to his son Joseph] Jacob had bought this field from the children of Hamor, the father of Schehem, for a hundred pieces of money. Joh 4:1b1a) Here lay Jacob's ground, the parcel of ground which Jacob gave to his son Joseph, whose bones were buried in it, Ge 48:22; Jos 24:32. Probably this is mentioned to intimate that Christ, when he reposed himself hard by here, took occasion from the ground which Jacob gave Joseph to meditate on the good report which the elders by faith obtained. In faith Jacob said take my bones back 6 Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. a state of weariness. The verb means to toil excessively (Lu 5:5). John emphasizes the human emotions of Jesus (Joh 1:14; 11:3,33,35,38,41; 12:27; 13:21; 19:28). So Jesus goes the twenty miles and He arrives near Sychar, and some suggest that Jacob's well (It was called that because Jacob's bones were buried nearby)—they know where that is today. It was probably between a half a mile and a mile away from the village of Sychar.  Askar is about a half a mile or so away. He arrives at that place and we read this: “Jesus being wearied from His journey was sitting thus.” What does “thus” mean?  Wearied, in a wearied condition; He sat in a slumped, wearied condition by the well. It was about the sixth hour.  The day began at dawn, which means it began say around 6 A.M. and sixth hour puts it at noon.  It is high noon; it is the middle of the day. The sun is at its peak and He has walked 20 miles, a rigorous, rigorous walk that morning.  And He's exhausted.  The word “wearied,” kopiao, means to be to the point of sweat and exhaustion.  It's an extreme condition.  He is worn out.  He is spent.  And at noon, under the blazing sun, He sits down on the edge of the well. Even though Jesus was the eternal Word, He became fully man and shared the fatigue and thirst that all travelers experience (cf. Heb. 4:15-16). The stage is set for this amazing encounter that is about to happen.  And again there you see the humanity of Jesus, don't you?  You see His humanity.  He understands all that we suffer as men and women because He was one of us. He knew what it was to be weary, to be thirsty, to be worn out, to be exhausted, which contributes to Him being a sympathetic high priest who learned from His own experiences how to sympathize with us.  That kind of thing brings shame on those who say that only the Virgin Mary or the saints can sympathize with us.  Jesus walked in our flesh.  He understands even our physical weariness. And there He is by the well. [Jacob's well] Cutting wells or pools for public use rendered a man famous, so this well was named after Jacob because he had digged it, and it was for public use. The well stands about a third of an hour walk from the present city of Neapolis and may be seen today. The word John uses here is pege, rather than the usual Frear. “On the difference between the two Loyd comments: ‘A spring is a God-given thing. God creates the spring; man only digs the well.' It is a curiosity that such a deep well should have been dug in a country where there are many springs. (Godet says that there are as many as eighty springs in the region.) The well must originally have been well over a hundred feet deep, so that digging and lining it was no small task. This has been worked into an argument that the well really was dug by Jacob. Only ‘a stranger in the land' would have gone to all the trouble to construct such a well in a land as plentifully endowed with springs! Many commentators give the depth of the well as about seventy-five feet, but according to Hendriksen a great deal of debris has been cleaned out and the well restored to its original depth.” Morris, p. 257, fn. 20. [1] Time does not permit an extensive exploration of the “well motif” in Genesis, but it has been noted elsewhere. Many of the important events in Genesis took place at a well. It was at a well that Abraham's servant found a wife for Isaac (see Genesis 24). It was also at a well that Jacob first met Rachel (Genesis 29). A spring plays a vital role in the survival of Hagar and her son, Ishmael (Genesis 16). [The sixth hour] About twelve o'clock. The time is noted here; 1. To account for Christ's fatigue - he had already travelled several hours, 2. To account for his thirst - the sun had by this time waxed hot. 3. To account for the disciples going to buy food because it was the normal time of dinner among the Jews. 7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. A polite request. Three things about this woman seem to put her at a distinct disadvantage. First, she is a Samaritan. Second, she is guilty of sexual immorality, and third, she is a woman. We have already commented about the way the Jews felt toward the Samaritans. We are not left in doubt as to how the Pharisees would have dealt with such a woman: [There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water] This was the normal employment of women, as we see in different parts of the sacred writings. The Jews say that those who wished to get wives went to the wells where young women were accustomed to come and draw water; and it is supposed that women of ill fame frequented such places also. Joh 4:1. 8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.) Drawing water was women's work.  Men worked in the field and did the hard work; women drew the water. That's supported by all kinds of historical data.  They did it every day.  They did it every day because they needed water every day.  Water was scarce in that part of the world, as you know.  Wells were visited every day. That was a common meeting place for the women who came to draw water. What is fascinating is that they came at dusk, typically. They came when the day had cooled down in the evening.  Why is she coming at noon?  Why is she there at twelve?  Well, we can't be certain about it, but it would be a reasonable thing to assume that this woman was a woman in town who had a very bad reputation—five husbands and living in adultery.  And oh, by the way, the Samaritan religion was based upon an understanding of the Pentateuch which contains the Ten Commandments and a whole lot of other things that have to do with marriage and divorce and adultery, the five books of Moses.  This is a scarlet woman.  She would normally come at dusk if she was like other women, but if she was a woman of shame, maybe she came at noon because she knows nobody else is going to be there. And maybe she's avoiding the confrontation and the stigma that she bears.  And why this well?  Because there's some information historically that there were wells closer to Sychar. Why go this far?  Why pass other wells?  And the answer might be the same, that she avoided the very convenient places in the normal time of day to avoid the scorn of other women that she would have to face.  She is not a respectable person. Consequently by all expectations, she is not a woman worthy of attention from the Son of God.  She is not a woman who is elevated. This is condescension.  And how does He begin?  He takes the initiative.  He says to her, “Give Me a drink.  J.C. Ryle says, “This is a gracious act of spiritual aggression on the sinner.”  We don't think about aggression in terms of evangelism, but we should.  It's a shocking thing, really, very shocking.  Not so much in our culture, obviously, but in that culture it's a shocking thing for Him to do because men don't speak with women in public. That's a breach of religious etiquette.  And especially rabbis don't speak to women in public.  In fact, I remember reading years ago, a group of Pharisees and rabbis who were called the bruised and bleeding Pharisees and the reason they were bruised and bleeding was because every time they saw a woman they closed their eyes and they kept running into buildings.  Jewish men didn't talk to women.  Do you know that Jewish rabbis were not supposed to talk to the women of their own family in public. Whatever might be thought of the propriety of asking for a drink …, no Rabbi would have carried on a conversation with a woman. One of their sayings ran: ‘A man shall not be alone with a woman in an inn, not even with his sister or his daughter, on account of what men may think. A man shall not talk with a woman in the street, not even with his own wife, and especially not with another woman, on account of what men may say.'” Morris, p. 274, citing SBk, II, p. 438. So here Jesus, a rabbi, a Jewish man, not only talks to a woman, but He talks to a woman who is an outcast, despised woman, who is a half-breed pagan and worse than that, she is by every measure a well-known adulteress who probably has been an adulteress for a long, long time, hence so many divorces.  'Cause if you look into the Law of Moses in the Old Testament, you will find that Moses did grant a divorce, but a divorce, as we know—because Jesus repeated it—for immorality.  This is an immoral woman.  It's a shocking breach of everything Jewish for Him to say to this woman, “Give Me a drink.”  And somebody might say, “Well, why doesn't He have the disciples get Him a drink?”  Well, can't because verse 8 says they had gone away into the city to buy food; so He's there alone.  Why is He there alone?  Well, because they needed food.  How many disciples does it take to get food?  All of them?  No, but dismissing them was beneficial to the conversation, let's put it that way.  He wanted to be alone with the woman. Joh 4:8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. Without them there to get Him a drink, and without any instrument to get a drink, He says to the woman, “Give Me a drink.”  It's just absolutely shocking.  And by the way, just a footnote, Jesus never did a miracle to quench His own thirst, satisfy His own hunger, or provide anything for Himself, never.  There's no record in all four gospels that Jesus ever did any miracle to feed Himself, provide for Himself, and thus He honored work, and He honored effort, and He honored care, and He honored sacrifice, and He honored giving and all the things that we do in life to sustain ourselves.  This was also part of His commitment to humanity.  We get what we need through either our own work, and our own effort, or somebody else's work and somebody else's effort.  He didn't do those kinds of miracles that would supply His own wants. A Jewish Rabbi would rather go thirsty than violate these proprieties. Strict Jews would not have purchased food from Samaritans as Jesus' disciples were attempting to do 9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. Here is another empty waterpot that I believe symbolizes the empty religion that man seeks for himself Notice that in the verses that follow, Jesus does not answer this question. It is the gospel which changes all this: Galatians 3:26-29- 26 For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God through faith. 27 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's descendants, heirs according to the promise  [That thou, being a Jew] Possibly the inhabitants of Judea distinguished themselves from those of Samaria by some peculiar mode of dress; and by this the Samaritan woman might have known Christ; but it is likely that our Lord spoke the Galilean dialect. [The Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans] The woman's question appears to have ended with the words, "Of Samaria" and the subsequent phrase are the words of the evangelist to explain the reason for the woman's question. It certainly surprised her when He asked for a drink of water. She surmised that He was a Jewish rabbi, and perhaps she tried to “read between the lines” to find another meaning to His request. What was He really seeking?[i] Of course, our Lord's request was simply a way to open the conversation and share with her the truth about “living water.” [ii] The hatred which existed between these two nations is well known. [The middle kingdom was taken captive by the Assyrians, who then repopulated the area with non-Jews (see 2 Kings 17), and to the Jews, who so prized racial and religious purity, the Samaritans were at best a people of suspect pedigree who practiced a corrupt religion. Perhaps she was surprised that Jesus would drink out of her water pot. That he should ask this kindness; for it was the pride of the Jews that they would endure any hardship rather than be beholden to a Samaritan. 2. She wonders that he should expect to receive this kindness from her that was a Samaritan: Christ takes this occasion to instruct her in divine things: John adds, “The Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.”  They don't use the same utensils.  The Jews “do not use dishes Samaritans have used.” A Rabbinic law of A.D. 66 stated that Samaritan women were considered as continually menstruating and thus unclean. Therefore a Jew who drank from a Samaritan woman's vessel would become ceremonially unclean.[iii] In fact, the Jews in John 8:48 said, “Do we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan and have a demon?”  That's what they said to Jesus.  You're nothing; that was one of their descriptions.  “You're a demon-possessed Samaritan.”  Terrible scorn for the Samaritans. Now again, you go back to 722 B.C., Assyria captures the northern kingdom. Transports everybody out.  You can read the story yourself in 2 Kings 17.  Takes everybody into captivity, leaves a few people there, a few of the Jews from the ten tribes, and into the district come Babylonians, people from Cuthah, Avva, Hamath, Sepharvaim. They're even listed in that chapter of 2 Kings.  They come in, they intermingle, they bring their gods, they get married, they lose their racial purity. This is an uncivilized time in the eyes of the Jews.  They devise some bizarre form of their own religion, they build a temple on Mount Gerizim and they carry on their own kind of worship.  We'll see more about that later.   The bitterness is profound after the Jews in the southern kingdom, Judah came back from captivity. Remember they came back from their captivity.  After they came back and rebuilt, you remember, it was Samaritans who tried to help them. Do you remember at the story of Nehemiah? The Samaritans wanted to help them and they refused to let them help. And so the Samaritans then tried to stop what they were doing and the bitterness got deeper and deeper and it lasted, and it lasted, and it lasted.   A renegade Jew, actually, it was a renegade Jew named Manasseh, who married a daughter of the Samaritan Sanballat. You remember he was the enemy of Nehemiah.  This renegade Jew named Manasseh, who married the daughter of Sanballat, he's the one that went up into Samaria and built the temple to sort of be their temple because they couldn't be a part of the new temple being built in Jerusalem.  So this rivalry had gone on.  Here we are four or five hundred years later and the attitudes are bitter and deep. Samaritans continued to worship on Mt. Gerizim and accepted only the Pentateuch as canonical. A small group of Israelis who claim to be able to trace their ancestry back to the Samaritans survives to the present day. The Samaritans professed to believe in the God of Israel and awaited the coming of Messiah (see John 4:25). They accepted only the first five books of the Law, but rejected the rest of the Old Testament Scriptures. Wherever they found it necessary to justify their religion and their place of worship, they modified the Law. The relationship between the Jews and the Samaritans was definitely strained.   10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. Having captured her attention and stimulated her curiosity, Jesus then spoke a puzzling saying to cause her to THINK…. It was as if He had said, “Your shock would be infinitely greater if you really knew who I am. You—not I—would be asking!” Three things would have provoked her thinking: (1) Who is He? (2) What is the gift of God? (3) What is living water? “Living water” in one sense is running water, but in another sense it is the Holy Spirit (Jer. 2:13; Zech. 14:8; John 7:38–39).[iv]             (1.) Christ is the fountain of gardens, and well of living waters, open for every poor sinner, and freely given, that whosoever will may come unto him, and drink of the riches of his grace. (2.) Many carelessly disregard the invaluable blessings of the gospel, because they perceive not their excellence, nor their own want of them. (3.) They who would obtain the blessings of grace from Jesus and his Holy Spirit, must seek them in persistent prayer; and he who is faithful and true, hath promised, that none such shall ask in vain. Is 55:1-7, Rev 7:16-17 The word used means, the free gift of God. And this is where evangelism starts.  You initiate the conversation, you find your way in at a common point of interest, and then comes the reality that you are offering the sinner it without regard to moralit.  It is mercy with no regard for morality.  It is mercy with no regard for religion.  It is just mercy.  It is just grace. It is the gift of God. This is the unique glory of the gospel.  In opposition to all religion, all religion says, “Do this, do this, do this, do this, and God will give you this.”  The gospel says, “In whatever state you're in religiously, and whatever state you're in morally, here's a gift.”  It is the gift of God.  It is a gift of grace.  It is a gift of mercy.  Dorean, the word here, is “free gift.”  Paul loves that word.  Paul uses that word in Romans.  He uses it in chapter 5, the free gift, the free gift.  And that's where our Lord starts with this unsolicited mercy being offered. This was one of the many instances in which he took occasion from common topics of conversation to introduce religious discourse. None ever did it so happily as he did, but, by studying his example and manner, we may learn also to do it. One way to acquire the art is to have the mind full of the subject; to make religion our first and main thing; to carry it with us into all employments and into all society; to look upon everything in a religious light, and out of the abundance of the heart the mouth will speak,    Mt 12:34 "Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. [If thou knewest the gift of God] The Greek word used here signifies a free gift, a gift which is given without asking anything in return. Such a free gift of kindness was Jesus Christ to the world (chapter 3:16), and through him comes the gift of the Spirit which those who believe on his name were to receive.  2Co 9:15 Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift! Eph 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, Christ will convert this woman, not by showing her that the Samaritan worship was dividing (though really it was so), but by showing her her own ignorance and immoralities, and her need of a Saviour. He hints to her what she should know, but was ignorant of: If thou knewest the gift of God, that is, as the next words explain it, who it is that saith, Give me to drink. If thou knewest who I am. She saw him to be a Jew, a poor weary traveler; but he would have her know something more concerning him that did yet appear. Note: (a.) Jesus Christ is the gift of God, the richest token of God's love to us, and the richest treasure of all good for us; a gift, not a debt which we could demand from God; not a loan, which he will demand from us again, but a gift, a free gift, Joh 3:16. (b.) It is an unspeakable privilege to have this gift of God proposed and offered to us; to have an opportunity of embracing it: thou wouldest have asked. Note: (a.) Those that would have any benefit by Christ must ask for it, must be earnest in prayer to God for it. (b.) Those that have a right knowledge of Christ will seek him, and if we do not seek him it is a sign that we do not know him. Jesus here means to denote by it his doctrine, or his grace and religion, in opposition to the impure and dead notions of the Jews and the Samaritans.  Ps 9:10 And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; For You, LORD, have not forsaken those who seek You. What is the gift of God?  What is the living water?  Well, it's salvation, clearly.  Everything that's in salvation—mercy, grace, pardon, forgiveness, justification, flowing and flowing and flowing and flowing and flowing—and endlessly flowing. [Living water] By this expression, which was common to the inhabitants both of the east and the west, is always meant spring water, in opposition to the dead, stagnant water contained in pools, ponds, tanks and cisterns; and what our Lord means by it is evidently the Holy Spirit, as may be seen in chapter 7:38-39. As water quenches the thirst, refreshes and invigorates the body, purifies things defiled and renders the earth fruitful, so it is an apt emblem of the Holy Spirit which so satisfies the souls that they no longer thirst for earthly good; it purifies them from spiritual defilement and it makes them who receive it fruitful in every good word and work. As in His conversation with Nicodemus (3:5), Jesus again alluded to the Old Testament passages that promised salvation as satisfying water (e.g., Isa.12:3; 44:3; 49:10; 55:1-7; Jer. 31:29-34; Ezek. 36:25-27; Joel 2:28-32). Isa 12:3 Therefore with joy you will draw water From the wells of salvation. Jer 2:13 "For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, And hewn themselves cisterns-broken cisterns that can hold no water. Zechariah 14:8 And in that day it shall be That living waters shall flow from Jerusalem, Half of them toward the eastern sea And half of them toward the western sea; In both summer and winter it shall occur. Is 1:16-18 Isa 1:2; Jer 6:19 Ps 36:9 For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see light.  Jer 17:13 O LORD, the hope of Israel, All who forsake You shall be ashamed. "Those who depart from Me Shall be written in the earth, Because they have forsaken the LORD, The fountain of living waters." Jer 18:14 Will a man leave the snow water of Lebanon, Which comes from the rock of the field? Will the cold flowing waters be forsaken for strange waters? Re 22:1 And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb 11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? concludes his boasts were absurd, and his offers a mere joke. Jesus was speaking about spiritual water, but she interpreted His words to mean literal water. Again, we see how easily people confuse the material and the spiritual. Furthermore, this woman was concerned about how He would obtain this water, instead of simply asking Him to give her a drink of it.[v] [Thou hast nothing to draw with] Thou hast no bucket. Good water is not plentiful in the east and travelers are often obliged to carry leather buckets or bottles with them, and a line also, to let them down into deep wells in order to draw up water. She said to Him, ‘Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep.  Where then do you get that living water?'”  This is sarcasm. This is a kind of scorn, kind of mockery. This woman is very used to defending herself.  12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? “You're not greater than our father Jacob, are you?  Who gave us the well and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?”  Who do you think you are?  You've got something better than this?  How are you going to give me water when you don't have a bucket?  How you going to drop the rope a hundred feet, pull up the water?  Do you have some other well?  Are you greater than Jacob?  "There was a trace of sarcasm in the woman's reply, as if she meant, 'We Samaritans are the dirt under your feet until you want something; then we are good enough Genesis 33:18 and 19, “Dug the well.”  This is skepticism, mockery.  Again, mercy responds kindly, patiently.    Of course Jesus is greater than Jacob—and greater than the well itself! To paraphrase His reply: “Whosoever continues to drink of this material water (or anything the world has to offer) will thirst again. But whosoever takes one drink of the water I give will never thirst again!” (see John 4:13–14) How true it is that the things of this world never completely satisfy. In hell today, people are crying, “I thirst!”   We have noted before that life is one of John's key concepts. He uses the word at least thirty-six times. Campbell Morgan has pointed out that mankind needs air, water, and food in order to have life. (We might also add that he needs light.) All of these are provided in Jesus Christ. He provides the “breath” (Spirit) of God (John 3:8; 20:22). He is the Bread of Life (John 6:48) and the Light of Life (John 1:4–5), and He gives us the water of life.[vi]    [Our father Jacob] Despite of the mixture of the races the Samaritans still counted themselves as descendants of Jacob. Art thou greater? Art thou wiser, or better able to find water, than Jacob was? It seems that she supposed that he meant that he could direct her to some living spring, or to some better well in that region, and that this implied more knowledge or skill than Jacob had. To find water and to furnish a good well was considered an indication of skill and success. It was a subject of great importance in that region. Men like to commend that which their ancestors used as superior to anything else.  The world over, people love to speak of that which their ancestors have done, and boast of titles and honours that have been handed down from them, even if it is nothing better than existed here--because Jacob's cattle had drunk of the water. Her reference to "our father Jacob" was probably another barb designed to remind this Jew that Jacob was the Samaritans' ancestor as well as the Jews'. 13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whoever drinks of this water shall thirst again: Jesus did not directly answer her question, or say that he was greater than Jacob, but he gave her an answer by which she might infer that he was. He did not despise or undervalue Jacob or his gifts; but, however great might be the value of that well, the water could not altogether remove thirst. 14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up (bubbling up) into everlasting life. All the comforts of the world are insufficient to give any abiding satisfaction; Christ alone can bestow the substantial portion on the soul. They who pant after the earth, and its enjoyments, drink and thirst again; It is a striking image, and especially in Eastern countries, where there are vast deserts, and often a great want of water. The soul by nature is like such a desert, or like a traveler wandering through such a desert. It is thirsting for happiness, and seeking it everywhere, and finding it not. It looks in all directions and tries all objects, but in vain. Nothing meets its desires. Though a sinner seeks for joy in wealth and pleasures, yet he is not satisfied. He still thirsts for more, and seeks still for happiness in some new enjoyment. To such a weary and unsatisfied sinner the grace of Christ is as cold waters to a thirsty soul. [Springing up into everlasting life]. This water from Jacob's well would satisfy only bodily thirst for a time. But the water Jesus gives provides continual satisfaction of needs and desires. In addition one who drinks His living water will have within him a spring of life-giving water (cf. 7:38–39). This inner spring contrasts with the water from the well, which required hard work to acquire. Jesus was speaking of the Holy Spirit who brings salvation to a person who believes and through Him offers salvation to others.[vii] Joh 6:35 And Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst again Joh 7:37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. What is it?  It's living water.  It's satisfaction forever, soul satisfaction forever. 15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw. The woman could not grasp this dark saying because of her sin and materialism. All she could understand was that if she had a spring she would not get thirsty and would not have to work so hard.[viii]                   [Give me this water] She did not as yet comprehend our Lord's meaning; but her curiosity was much excited, and this was the design of our Lord, that he might have her mind properly prepared to receive the great truths which he was about to announce. water that will prevent thirst. Neither come, "nor keep on coming" as she has to do once or twice every day. She is evidently puzzled and yet attracted. Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. Have you trusted Him as your Savior? He can Save you if You ask Him based on His death, burial, and resurrection for your sins. Believe in Him for forgiveness of your sins today. “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”  -John 8:32  Our mission is to spread the gospel and to go to the least of these with the life-changing message of Jesus Christ; We reach out to those the World has forgotten.  hisloveministries.podbean.com #HLMSocial hisloveministries.net https://www.instagram.com/hisloveministries1/?hl=en His Love Ministries on Itunes Don't go for all the gusto you can get, go for all the God (Jesus Christ) you can get. Pastor Bill: [0:00] Hello and welcome to season 3 episode 62 of The Berean Manifesto; Faith, Hope, and Love for the Modern Christian. I'm Pastor Bill and I'm joined by Pastor Newms the ever wonderful bearded one who wears beanies or hats most of the time I see you still have your tree up back there but it doesn't have any light.   Pastor Newms: [0:31] It's actually pretty lit but we're not going to talk about that we took the balls off. Christmas tree is still up yeah I mean there's part of me that's like it's a black Christmas tree do I really take it down. You know I joked about in the past I had a tall skinny one that wasn't a real tree it was one of those that just like Circle down and looked all funny I talked about leaving that one up all year round. But now we've lost it somewhere in our garage which is crazy because our garage is not that big but I'm not sure how we lost it. Hello Phoenix.   Pastor Bill: [1:34] So if you're listening to this podcast and you're new to The Berean Manifesto, we record live every Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m. Central Standard Time or at least when life doesn't throw us curveballs and sometimes we don't record but when we release new episodes they are recorded live ahead. So we recorded this one but we do it with a live audience or we invite a live audience we have some regulars that join us. Biggs, thank you for being here. Phoenix, thank you for being here. Perhaps Groggy will come in later. He comes in from time to time to say hello and basically what we want to do is Foster an environment where there can be interaction. You don't have to interact if you don't want to. Chime in and say anything but if you wanted to then you could catch this live on Twitch YouTube. Like I said on Sunday nights where we go live and then you can just participate in the chat you know with your little keyboard or on your phone and be a part of the conversation that's going on sometimes we get off of topic but we've always. Like tonight's episode is called at the well and so we're gonna try to stay on topic in steer into that as much as possible but don't know, sometimes sometimes we go different directions so yeah how was your week Pastor Newms.   Pastor Newms: [3:15] Our work is pretty good work is real busy right now it's a little crazy, my girls ended up sick this week so that was fun they were home for multiple days we've got. Streaming we did throughout the week streaming Borderlands and we did we're still at war in Star Trek so you know just a little bit of everything.   Pastor Bill: [3:51] My week was good yeah I did some art for our streaming stuff. That was fun it was good to get back into Photoshop and illustrator and get some stuff done in there and.   Pastor Newms: [4:10] Make our titles prettier and our.   Pastor Bill: [4:14] Yeah we can't use the same little characters though because yours is all like.   Pastor Newms: [4:20] Yeah like I don't normally look on every Sunday just say.   Pastor Bill: [4:22] Only after I only have two eyes.   Pastor Newms: [4:25] I almost I almost switched I almost switched just mine I didn't tell you.   Pastor Bill: [4:34] I know that I wouldn't see it because what you send me has your title.   Pastor Newms: [4:38] You would but it would be it would be funny because I could get out it would just be like wait did you change mine know why cause you're just the wrong size mines the correct size.   Pastor Bill: [4:50] No oh yeah it is because of.   Pastor Newms: [4:56] We only see part of the word Pastor if we use the same one. Well I could just shrink it but my name would be like twice your size even though our pictures are different so but yes.   Pastor Bill: [5:12] All right so that was my week my work is great. I really have anything else to share about my week. Did a couple airport runs that was fun a regular customer that calls me for Uber rides and then my aunt was going out of town, so I needed to airport runs this week and then my wife had an airport run for my cousin on Friday evening so buddy airport runs this week going on three is a bunch. Sure all right well without further.   Pastor Newms: [5:53] More times than I went to the airport this week.   Pastor Bill: [5:55] It is time for Getting To Know The Pastors and this week it is a card from Pastor Newms from his pack that his wife and sister bought him, some event I can't remember what it was Biggs on Twitch asks if it was Love Field or Dallas-Fort Worth Airport and all three trips were Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. Why is that sad?   Pastor Newms: [6:26] Huh.   Pastor Bill: [6:28] Totally like 20 minutes difference and the Dallas when you got to get into Dallas traffic and little.   Pastor Newms: [6:35] You really do all right you ready.   Pastor Bill: [6:40] Or I should I should say the Love Field one you have to get into Dallas traffic.   Pastor Newms: [6:46] We're going to end up pulling another card probably but maybe not, “If you could hear a speech from any leading figure in any field what would you choose to hear?”   Pastor Bill: [6:59] I've always wanted to and you didn't you don't mean a recording of it, you mean.   Pastor Newms: [7:05] Right live here speech.   Pastor Bill: [7:06] Be there live yeah I've always wanted and I feel like that card was destined to be pulled today. I've always wanted to attend the “I Have a Dream” speech for Martin Luther King jr.   Pastor Newms: [7:27] Okay.   Pastor Bill: [7:28] I've always wanted to attend it I've heard I'd rather recording multiple times and it always moves me with emotions, always every time it never loses any of its. Any of its power and so I've always wanted to attend that live. So that was an easy one for me.   Pastor Newms: [7:54] Yeah we really was and.   Pastor Bill: [8:02] Then the reason I feel like that was you know destined is because tomorrow's the man's holiday.   Pastor Newms: [8:08] Yes yeah tomorrow is yeah I don't I can't think of anything that's like I want to hear this speech, I can't think of anything that's pressing in my mind there's probably some technical lectures I would really enjoy but there's a couple of you know, the tech ones that happened throughout the country and Nations each year I'd love to travel to a bunch of those and just hear experts that actually have passions for their games actually talked about developing them and stuff live as opposed to just recorded but.   Pastor Bill: [9:04] So nothing like the Gettysburg address or Sermon on the Mount or.   Pastor Newms: [9:15] See I took it to mean a living person but it didn't specify that. Yeah, it didn't specify living or dead but.   Pastor Bill: [9:28] I can't think of one single person alive today that I would want to go listen to just talk.   Pastor Newms: [9:35] I can think of a couple of leaders in business and stuff that I would actually attend a lecture on but my thing is I get the same enjoyment normally. For the speech aspect in just watching it I'm not a person who needs to be in person I prefer everything to be.   Pastor Bill: [9:58] I thought of one Craig Groeschel retelling the story of the first time he gave a sermon. In that, United Methodist I think it was and they were wearing the robes and all that all those details that's a great story if I could arrange to have him read tell me that story face to face, I would want to do that, they go a living person.   Pastor Newms: [10:29] So Gran sent me a private message in Star Trek and he has a he has a good one, which is Neil DeGrasse Tyson on interstellar theory in the scope of the universe, and I could see that one that's one of those technical ones that I really think I would enjoy, because it's always interesting to hear those people especially ones like Neil deGrasse Tyson who is so passionate and so well-articulated, in because some scientist sadly are not.   Pastor Bill: [11:06] I'm not a fan of Neil DeGrasse Tyson but only because you know how some people inexplicably urk me, something about their mannerisms something about attitude I don't know I did he just doesn't eat kind of don't know something about him just is off-putting so I'm not a fan.   Pastor Newms: [11:29] You're like that with a lot of people.   Pastor Bill: [11:31] Am I okay.   Pastor Newms: [11:32] Yeah but that's okay I mean you have your opinions but there's a lot of like YouTubers.   Pastor Bill: [11:41] Oh yeah, I mean I'll just say it, RevDuece. I can't watch any of RevDueces videos. A guy that makes content for Star Trek Fleet Command, I just can't watch them I get I get like 30 seconds then I'm like I'm done I'm done I can't even I can't make it any further.   Pastor Newms: [11:56] And a lot of my SCP videos and stuff you're like I can't listen to that person I almost fell asleep I don't like that person that way that person speaks is terri… you know it's like okay no I got.   Pastor Bill: [12:07] I finished watching the expanse right so that five seasons, there's just one character I kept rooting for them to kill off because she intentionally speaks in this low gravelly voice and every time she talks all I can mentally process is, why that voice why is this character still alive why can't I get over her voice.   Pastor Newms: [12:36] Yeah it's there's just some people I have a couple people I work with that are like that but we won't name their names of course.   Pastor Bill: [12:46] In the church and their church because because that's… would be me and your wife or the only people you work with in the church.   Pastor Newms: [12:52] Not in the church no.   Pastor Bill: [12:53] You're like I don't like your voice I don't like my wifes voice, I don't want to be here.   Pastor Newms: [13:00] There are some days your voice grades me but it's usually because we've just gotten in an argument not because of anything valid we've gotten in one of our spats about.   Pastor Bill: [13:09] And we argue man we spat about the stupidest thing sometimes.   Pastor Newms: [13:14] It's the stupidest that it's semantics it's English-language ninety percent of the time because we both have a different position and we're trying to understand the other person's position but we can't because there's some word one of us is hung up on, and then we get to the end and you're like wait did we just argue for two hours on a word.   Pastor Bill: [13:34] Yeah did we just uphold the exact same point of view and argue about it for two hours because we were stating it in different ways so you don't disagree that.   Pastor Newms: [13:45] Gran says hooray for Network management protocols.   Pastor Bill: [13:54] I don't know I thought if I did that that head shift thing that dogs do I'm I understand what he's saying what does that mean.   Pastor Newms: [14:01] I'm not a hundred percent sure but I'm assuming it has something to do with. Network management protocols so I'm assuming it's Gran thought I said SN SNMP.   Pastor Bill: [14:22] OS and MP.   Pastor Newms: [14:25] Which is Network protocols.   Pastor Bill: [14:26] You said.   Pastor Newms: [14:28] SCP is the is the is a is a fandom online of, stories about what if all kinds of crazy things actually existed and there's a, non-governmental agency called the SCP Foundation which is secure contain protect. And so they there's all these short stories and all these that are some of them are phenomenal and some of them are garbage because they're written by their written on a Wiki and so it's open for people to write, um and one of the rules is it in it is because the SCP deals with reality Benders all the time there is no Cannon, so the writers themselves take what Canon they believe is true and right off that and then you when you're listening you're like and so there's these people that do these YouTube videos where they read the stories, and then add extra details from other stories that involve those essays and it's, I fell in a hole for about two years where I was listening to like three hours of it a day. It was a little crazy I have to say but.   Pastor Bill: [15:52] And then he was like.   Pastor Newms: [15:53] I know a lot about it.   Pastor Bill: [15:54] He was like you should listen to some of these with me sometime and I was like okay I dragged you into Star Trek world and made you watch some Star Trek made you play store we're going to try this SCP thing it's not for me.   Pastor Newms: [16:09] It's not for him.   Pastor Bill: [16:10] I'm glad that Newms enjoys it and that there's something out there that can captivate him that way but it's definitely not for me.   Pastor Newms: [16:27] Because I always forget my sister exists, and so it's an SCP of this person who everyone thinks is their little sister but when they're not like actively paying attention she disappears. But yet everyone else around them knows that and they're like wait didn't you forget your sister and that's constantly a question that whoever she's currently attached to has to ask and so it's kind of humorous.   Pastor Bill: [17:00] It's a kind of object permanence/silence thing.   Pastor Newms: [17:07] There's a couple of there's a couple of SCPs that have that mind-altering, reality let go like I called them reality Benders pretty constant but, I think it's funny just because we were talking about it one time and everyone's like why do you always forget your sister and I'm like I don't know I love her she lives here, like.   Pastor Bill: [17:29] She's not real she's an SCP.   Pastor Newms: [17:31] I don't I'll put four plates out and then like keep making dinner and people are like, “Don't you need 5 plates?” “Why?”   Pastor Bill: [17:41] So your sister getting too.   Pastor Newms: [17:43] Because Phoenix might come down and eat I don't know.   Pastor Bill: [17:48] She don't get a plate we're just gonna put her slop straight on the table.   Pastor Newms: [17:51] Yeah she can eat off the table and then I make food for the dog but then like don't put food out for her like you know just.   Pastor Bill: [18:00] Food out for your sister.   Pastor Newms: [18:03] Well I I mean like make her a plate or put her plate out or that sounded terrible.   Pastor Bill: [18:08] It sounded horrible.   Pastor Newms: [18:09] That's okay this morning Kaiju is learned a new thing Kaiju has learned to alert me when she is not happy, I'm with her breakfast and that she would like a breakfast additive such as you know an egg or some potatoes or you know something that that Daddy me being me would have to cook she now, goes to her food bowl she looks at her food bowl she looks at her, dry container that's next to it she puts her face on the dry container she looks at the food. Takes a bite stares me in the eye while she chews her one bite and just looks at me. While she's eating and I'm like and then she'll get up and go sit in the kitchen. Just sit on there's a rug for like washing plates right and that's where she sits when I'm cooking because it's behind the stove but it's close in case something falls off but you know, and so for breakfast when I didn't cook I had cereal the girls had cereal Kaiju had an egg so she has me properly trained, she's so cute though her little puppy dog eyes.   Pastor Bill: [19:41] All right we got a commenter on YouTube but I don't understand the comment that's okay.   Pastor Newms: [19:48] Born To Go not sure.   Pastor Bill: [19:49] Yeah voor in go I don't know what that means either perhaps it's another language their name is clearly not English, kind of looks like they just went on the keyboard when they put in their name. That's kind of cool I would like a name that it looks like I just switched on the keyboard that'd be awesome I'd be like what's your name, all right so this week we're the title was at the well so, if you're wanting to follow along in the Bible we're going to pull up this one story and then we're going to do some history stuff and we're going to talk about how things relate to us and on and on our right, so if you want to go to John chapter 4. John chapter 4 and then I'm going to start reading in verse and let's just start in verse 1 because it's good to have. Context of what's going on at the time and we're going to read all the way through verse 26. We might talk about verses 27 through 38 here in a little bit if we get to it, all right when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard he was making and baptizing more disciples than John although Jesus himself was not baptizing but his disciples were, he left Judea and went again to Galilee, he had to travel through Samaria so he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar near the property that Jacob had given to his son Joseph Jacob's Well was there, and Jesus worn out from his journey sat down at the well it was about noon. A woman of Samaria came to draw water give me a drink Jesus said to her because his disciples had gone into town to buy food. How is it that you a Jew ask for a drink for me of Samaritan woman she asked him, for Jews do not associate with Samaritans Jesus answered if you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you give me a drink, you would ask him and he would give you living water, sir said the woman you don't even have a bucket and the well is deep so where do you get this living water, you aren't greater than our father Jacob are you he gave us the well and drank from it himself as did his sons and livestock, Jesus said everyone who drinks from this water will get thirsty again but whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty again, in fact the water I give him will become a well sorry will become a well of water springing up in him for eternal life. Sir the woman said to him sir give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and come here to draw water go call your husband he told her and come back here, I don't have a husband she answered you have correctly said I don't have a husband Jesus said, for you have had five husbands and the man you now have is not your husband what you have said is true, sir the woman replied I see that you are a prophet I feel like that's like the blondest answer, anyway. No friends to bonds but you get the concept our fathers worshiped on this mountain but you Jews say the place to worship is in Jerusalem, Jesus told her believe me woman an hour is coming when you will worship the father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem, you Samaritans worship what you do not know we worship what we do know because salvation is from the Jews, but an hour is coming and is now here when the true worshipers will worship the father in spirit and in truth, yes the father wants such people to worship him God is spirit and those who worship Him must Worship in spirit and in truth, the woman said to him I know that the Messiah is coming he was called Christ when he comes he will explain everything to us Jesus told her I the one speaking to you am he. So we've got this dynamic between the superior and Samaritans and the Jews and you've got this issue where Jesus, has to travel through Samaria for some reason to get from Judea to Galilee and I say has two because there are two paths from Judea outside of Jerusalem. So if you if you look at it here I'll put a map here for you if you follow this this part of my hand right here this is the Jordan River the river where Jesus was baptized and over here you've got Judea and all the Hill Country of Judea with Jerusalem, if you go up then you've got some Merit Samaria is here and then where he's going in Galilee is up here well shoe passes there, you can go through Samaria which is the quick path because there's a mountain range here and then the river it's you know you're basically by passing the mountains or, you can go over the mountains to the other side of the Jordan River and up and then back again which is a much longer trip, it is much more difficult trip so, had to go through Samaria well most Jews don't ya Biggs on Twitch says nice map, most Jews wouldn't go through Samaria they refused and they would take the long path and at one point in the Book of Luke Luke chapter 9, Jesus is actually traveling through Samaria and tries to enter a Samaritan town and they wouldn't let him because his face looked too Jewish, um or rather specifically it says when they saw in his face that he was determined or likely. Suppose the.   Pastor Newms: [26:28] Nope.   Pastor Bill: [26:31] And they did not receive him because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem so they're saying you can't come in our town because you look like you're a Jew, we're not going to have any of that here so the Samaritans didn't like the Jews for good reason the Jews didn't like the Samaritans, for an understandable reason I'm not going to say it's a good reason because it's in my opinion not a good reason but understandable reason, so if we want to rewind time and we go back to where so Jerusalem was was not Jerusalem the the people of Israel were two kingdoms the northern kingdom and the southern Kingdom and those two kingdoms were then United when Samuel anointed Saul as king, Saul became the king these two kingdoms were United and then Saul, loses the kingdom today that a David becomes the new king and they're still then one Kingdom Loosely one Kingdom David did more to unite the two the two kingdoms than anyone else in all of their history. And so then Samuel dies well when Samuel dies then you start to get the insurrections and the issues that David faced with his own son turn usurp him and and on and on, so then they basically split into effectively two kingdoms, they would still work together fight wars together against Outsiders but they also fought Wars against each other constantly and so that's, you know the problem is going there and then because they had, Take It On Foreign gods and married foreign wives and on and on and on the Bible says that God then handed them over to Assyria, so they go into captivity to take captivity in Assyria but there was a contingent of Jews who fled into the mountains where the Assyrians couldn't find them, and these people established on and around Mount I had it pulled up. It's the mountain that the woman in the story we just read was talking about it is Mount. And of course I scrolled away from the name of the mountain Garrison or jerez mmm.   Pastor Newms: [29:08] My chair is acting up sorry.   Pastor Bill: [29:11] On or around that mountain now this mountain is where the Samaritans believed, that Moses actually met with God that's the mountain where they believe that Moses met with God. The Jews believe that Moses met with God on a different Mountain the Samaritans also believe it was on this mountain that God not only gave Moses the Ten Commandments but the Samaritans believed that God, wrote the first five books of the Bible himself and presented them to Moses, when he gave him the Ten Commandments a big just saying Mount Sinai that's where the Jewish belief that God met with, Moses and did all this the Samaritans believe it's a different Mountain they also believe that this mountain is the mountain where Abraham was instructed to sacrifice Isaac, and then was stopped by the angel and this these are reasons why the Samaritans believed, that mountain is where God should be worshipped because of these events that their historical records tell them happened there. And so this offshoot of people who weren't taken into a Syria they are living up in the mountains they're worshipping, the same God but they're also worshiping Asherah they're continuing to have a Shore polls they're continuing to have the gods of other, kingdoms and other religions and they've got this whole list of gods that they're. And so then when the Jewish people are not technically freed but, king of Assyria plants groups of Jews into the territory where the Samaritans are now living, they, and these weren't just use they were Jews they were Assyrians that Jews had married they were The Offspring of people that Jews and Assyrians they were the friends and family you know extended family of so you've got, not just Assyrians but other people the Assyrians had taken you know had conquered and taken in as well as whole Melting Pot of, and this whole Melting Pot of people thing is why when the Jews do then re-establish, the southern kingdom in Jerusalem they consider Samaritans to be mongrels or mixed breeds because, they're not pure Jews anymore, in any of the Jews who had married Assyrians and so on and so on while they were in Assyria were considered mongrels and mixed breeds as well and were you know sent off. So they've got the southern Kingdom now and then the Samaritans are making up the Northern Kingdom at this point right so we fast forward to, um becomes time in the book of I want to say Ezra. In the book of Ezra it comes time where they're going to rebuild Jerusalem they're going to rebuild the Temple. And by this time, the Samaritans that had stayed had given up Asherah they've given up all the foreign Gods the only God that they're worshiping now is still. The god of the Israelites however they have their own name for him own nickname remember last time we talked about nicknames so the Sumerian nickname for God was Shehmaa, now Shehmaa is literally the word for the name, they literally nicknamed God the name. Um they were still that at this point they were exclusively worshipping the name which is the name their nickname for Yahweh, and they come and they ask well we're worshipping the same God you are we're making sacrifices to God on the mountain we would like to help build the temple and then we can all worship God together. And the team that's in charge of building the Temple says, you can't be a part of what we're doing we're doing it the king of Syria gave us leave to come do this and this is our work we're rebuilding Jerusalem and the temple you're not allowed to help us and sent them away. So this is why Samaritans don't like the juice hit that one moment in history, LEDs has led to hundreds of years of Samaritans not liking juice now today as of right now there are about 1,000, less than 1000 Samaritans left most of them hold dual citizenship Jewish and Palestinian, um and the ones that don't are full Jewish citizenship, the ones that hold dual citizen are a lot aren't required to serve in the Jewish military when they turn 18 but the ones that only have Jewish citizenship are required, and they basically all live in this one neighborhood on the outskirts of. Right there anyway so yeah there's that there's that so this is the history of that they have with each other so, we fast forward to where in Jesus time the Jews see the Samaritans as the descendants of mongrels, worse than Gentiles because they're the descendants of people who had access to God and then mixed with people who didn't, and created these Offspring and the Samaritans don't like the Jews because the Samaritans are going well we've got the word of God we worship the same God we love God we want to be together and you just told us to, go off back in the mountains and keep being mongrels right so that's where we are so Jesus. He plays on this hatred to prove a point when he tells the story of the Good Samaritan and the Pharisees actually, use the term Samaritan as an insult and describe Jesus as a Samaritan, or demon-possessed man that's actually how they describe Jesus as an insult was to call him a. So we've got some serious issues going on right but both groups want. To worship God and Jesus says well the day is coming where it won't matter. On the mountain or in the temple or by the tree or at the well or anywhere else because you will worship in spirit and in truth. See that there's this whole thing going on here in in John 4 beyond the idea of Living Water, to where you'll thirst no more, that means something different than any means now when you're thirsty it means you want some physical intimacy and you're scrolling online to try to find some substitute for it because you're thirsty. Then it means something completely different liquid was equated to spiritual life, if you were dry and parched spiritually then you were thirsty, and Jesus is using this well as is example of well I bring living water so that spiritually you won't be empty and dry and longing and thirsty anymore. But there's more going on here there's this there's this thing where Jesus is going there's this time. When you're all going to be one and it won't matter what that label is anymore of Samaritan or Jew, Gentile, Baptist, Methodist, Protestant, Evangelical, Catholic. On and on and on I can't list all of them Lutheran Methodist can't list all these labels that we tried to use to create separations in the. The only issue that makes you not a part of the church is If you deny that Jesus came and died on the cross and was raised again. That's it if you believe that three part statement came died rose again. Then we're the same group we're the same should be no barriers between us. And that's what I wanted to highlight from the story of at the well it's because. When we put our faith in Christ. We all receive that well spring of Living Water in our hearts and it's all the same Wellspring and it's all Fred fed from the same Waters we all have that same wall spring in our hearts. Anything you want to add to that Pastor Newms.   Pastor Newms: [39:41] No I will agree I think that that's a very important part of the story that often gets gleaned over, just because you know there's the hole, Jesus went out of his way to show the Samaritans that they were part of this to this you know there's this part of the story that part of the story you know oh look Jesus knows everything just by looking at someone you know there's all these different parts of the story that a lot of people spend a lot of time highlighting and skipping over the part where Jesus is basically like can y'all stop squabbling like children like this isn't what matters, very soon none of this will matter as far as who and where because everyone can worship anywhere and I think that's also a very important part of that because, so often we you know you have a mindset that some people have that worship is only in a church building, not everyone I'm not trying to say you know not a specific denomination not a specific type of person but there are people who believe that and.   Pastor Bill: [40:53] Like cursing I don't curse in a church building.   Pastor Newms: [40:57] Sometimes yeah don't wear a cowboy hat.   Pastor Bill: [41:00] Does it make that it's that four walls instead of this four walls.   Pastor Newms: [41:04] What's you shouldn't live different. But another aspect of that is that those types of people that are like oh well I'm at church so I'm going to worship and then, the rest of the week rolls around and there is no Worship in their hearts, there is no prayer and Thanksgiving there is no it's just, I work I do my stuff I am who I am I'm you know they ignore God all week because they can only pay attention to God in the house and it's like, that's not the holy spirit in us as that Wellspring doesn't everywhere we go every time we talk every time we eat Saul, that you know it's all influenced by it it's you know I find it interesting often you know there's a difference between like a Christian Author and an author who is Christian and a Christian artist and an artist who is Christian and and oftentimes you know even if you're writing in the secular, if you are a Christian who is actively accessing the Holy Spirit, You Can't Hide certain aspects you know there are certain stories that have been told.   Pastor Bill: [42:37] That's why when you listen to Switchfoot songs you hear even though they are technically a cycler band you hear a come through you listen to Lifehouse, you hear their faith come through.   Pastor Newms: [42:52] And even bands where you look at bands like Korn where, several of their members became Christian but they can sit they continue the same style of music in the same way but the music takes a drastic shift and everyone's like oh it's because they got sober, oh it's because of this oh it's because of that it's like well yes all of those. And like and so it's interesting too.   Pastor Bill: [43:24] And you're going to tell me them altar calls at the end of the Korn concert that's because of.   Pastor Newms: [43:29] Yeah it is it's just because they got sober.   Pastor Bill: [43:31] Sober as well that's because I got so okay okay.   Pastor Newms: [43:33] Yeah that's the only reason.   Pastor Bill: [43:35] I got you I got you.   Pastor Newms: [43:38] Yeah but it's always interesting to see you know there are people who you cannot and then we have the opposite we have people who claim to be Christians and you know they win an award and thank God and yet you look at him and you're like.   Pastor Bill: [43:52] Mmm.   Pastor Newms: [43:55] There's no fruit there's no fruit that's a dead tree if that is a tree.   Pastor Bill: [44:00] There is no light shining forth here this is not.   Pastor Newms: [44:03] There. You know but in that you know. It sometimes feels like application but you see some of those people down the road. Make their realizations you know so it's always interesting to watch some of those kinds of things but what's important is not where we are or whom we are, or in what way we do it it's the problem is that spirit and Truth, that's that big important part of worship in and of following is the spirit and Truth not necessarily all the extra stuff that we often as we mentioned in the beginning there are times, that we will argue there are times that we disagree on Little Things, because we believe and the reason why we typically get to that point is trying to defend the truth that we believe in and that's something as, Berean lifestyle like we talked about so often of searching for the truth in the Bible in historical documents in you know, not taking something someone says even if I say it bill says it you know your mama across the street says it 14 people, told you one time that your cousin said it you know it doesn't matter who said it we should always be searching for, the actual truth in that.   Pastor Bill: [45:42] That's the main thing is prove it.   Pastor Newms: [45:43] You like to the 14 people telling me that your cousin said.   Pastor Bill: [45:48] Yeah like that that was.   Pastor Newms: [45:49] Did you like that okay just because it comes across your Facebook feed your Tik-Tok your Instagram, your YouTube does not mean it's truth I don't actually like for me for example I don't actually believe the SCP Foundation is real because they wouldn't call it that and then make a series but there are people who are like see they wrote about it and since they wrote about it that's because it's true.   Pastor Bill: [46:17] Plausible.   Pastor Newms: [46:17] Plausible deniability that's why they wrote it they wouldn't have wrote it if it isn't true and you're looking at the person going.   Pastor Bill: [46:23] They actually did run plausible deniability programs in the 80s and 90s with TV shows and.   Pastor Newms: [46:32] Do they still do.   Pastor Bill: [46:33] Well I mean not as much as they used to but it's set off such a firestorm in conspiracy theory circles that they were like we made it worse we made it so much worse we might help me move in it so much worse.   Pastor Newms: [46:45] Yeah I mean there are things that are you know crazy that are out there but, you know we deal with it we move on but I'm just saying we have to search for the truth now I'm not trying to say don't believe anything you read, because things that are published and peer-reviewed multiple times by whole separate groups can be trusted to certain degrees, again just because someone else on Facebook says something isn't true doesn't mean it is but, that's my soapbox.   Pastor Bill: [47:24] So with the like the Doom and Gloom over the last few years, we're all gonna die we're all gonna get sick and suffer and die and and it's going to be horrible and, okay okay I'm not going to dispute the facts of what you're saying, there are diseases people are going to get infected it's going to happen but what I am going to say is, you're telling me that's important and I'm telling you that the hope and promise that I see here. Is what's important so that's my truth in that Doom and Gloom moment is you're telling me The Skys Falling Down. And this book tells me that Skies only my temporary roof for now I got bigger things to worry about.   Pastor Newms: [48:22] And that that does say the sky will fall at a certain point but that doesn't mean we.   Pastor Bill: [48:27] More like the sky will rip open like a scroll like a scroll has been pulled too tightly.   Pastor Newms: [48:43] The whole point of it talking about things like that is to show us that's not the true end that is the end of this realm and so yeah it's going to happen but.   Pastor Bill: [48:56] Bad things are always going to happen.   Pastor Newms: [48:58] Yeah yeah. Love.   Pastor Bill: [48:59] But I have hope I have faith there's things that are more important to me yeah faith hope The Berean Manifesto; Faith, Hope, and Love for the Modern… You did it you did it.   Pastor Newms: [49:17] I know I apologize to all the viewers.   Pastor Bill: [49:20] You brought it right out of me.   Pastor Newms: [49:22] And I did I did I'm sorry.   Pastor Bill: [49:25] So did you learn anything about the Samaritans tonight Pastor Newms   Pastor Newms: No.   Pastor Bill: No, you knew about Mount Gersh Gershom?   Pastor Newms: [49:34] The only thing I didn't know I guess I did learn one thing I did not know they all currently live in one neighborhood I knew there was one, area but I thought it was more than a thousand people left so that that that I didn't know, but yes.   Pastor Bill: [49:59] Alright so here's another thing that I can tell you about Samaritans so there was a time when Ithamar was a priest who was a descendant of Aaron in the Levitical line and there was another place priest named Eli. And Eli didn't think he was getting enough kickback, from the offerings and tied the people were bringing to the temple so he left and went into the mountains and built a temple for the Samaritans where they could worship God, and that went great for Eli for a while until the Samaritans got wise to why and what he was doing, and then they ran him out of town and then nobody knows what happened to him after that. But they got it simple out of it on the mountain that Temple that she was talking about worshiping God in that's the temple Built by the evil priest Eli and then used by God to draw those people back towards himself. Because that's what God does constantly throughout history we see it.   Pastor Newms: [51:27] Everything that's meant yep.   Pastor Bill: [51:30] And you can call God by any name you want to call him, but when it's the same profile and the same mercy and the same and the same and the same and you can see it and you go well that's clearly the same God of with different names reaching out to different people, the reason that Jesus came as a Jew. Was one fold that is one reason and that was because when God found no one faithful on the Earth. Abraham heard a whisper in the wilderness and had faith that it was real. And it turned out to be the voice of God. That's it that's the only reason because one man was trying to have faith when everyone else in the world had given up on faith. The story of that the well. I believe the most important part there is as Believers we are the church one body, an antibody has different parts we have a mouth and eyes and ears and hands and feet and we serve different purposes and we reach different people in different ways We Are One. Why are you smirking over there.   Pastor Newms: [53:24] Sorry I'm a bad person and the only thing I could think of was the fact, two groups of people that we have recently been talking about a lot are two arms of the same body and it just it made me chuckle and I was trying to keep it to myself but I obviously my face couldn't, sorry.   Pastor Bill: [53:47] Has a Star Trek reference by the way to our do the Star Trek game that we play.   Pastor Newms: [53:49] Is the Star Trek Fleet command reference is yes anyway sorry.   Pastor Bill: [53:55] All right well we're now we're in and that's usual work you know at the 59th minute not quite an hour yet but I don't think anyone online has any questions always typed in any questions so, who's hitting themselves what big.   Pastor Newms: [54:13] Yeah why are we hitting ourselves.   Pastor Bill: [54:14] What are you talking about.   Pastor Newms: [54:16] I'm confused Biggs are you talking about I'm not hitting myself.   Pastor Bill: [54:23] All right well that's all we have for tonight I love you guys and I hope you have a great week.   Pastor Newms: I love you guys and be safe out there.   Pastor Bill: And until next time…

TRANSCRIPT: Good morning, Five Minute Families. It's a new month and yet another chance to begin making changes that will impact your family for generations to come. Every day choices become lifetime legacies, and so we encourage you to continue to cultivate grit in yourself and your family for the sake of God's work in you and through you. Let's continue to breakdown the concept of grit. As we mentioned last week, grit can also be called resilience. The APA Dictionary of Psychology definition of grit is that it is “a personality trait characterized by perseverance and passion for achieving long-term goals. Grit entails working strenuously to overcome challenges and maintaining effort and interest over time despite failures, adversities, and plateaus in progress.” Joseph - Jacob's eleventh son - was resilient. He showed true grit despite his circumstances. Joseph had been given visions from God and he trusted in God's plans - even when his older brothers sold him into slavery, even when Potiphar's wife lied about him, even when he was forgotten for years in prison… he held fast to the truth about God, not the world of circumstances at the moment. Because of his trust in God, he exhibited the characteristics needed to face the disappointments that were thrown at him. So, how does a five-minute family work through disappointments in order to glorify the Lord? 1.    First, you have to fully acknowledge your hurts and disappointments. We cannot work through them if we do not want to admit they exist. There are numerous verses which demonstrate the hurt and pain the biblical heroes of old faced; one such beginning is found in Psalm 42:3, “My tears have been my food day and night.” Allow your child to recognize those disappointments and speak about them. Allow yourself to do the same. 2.    Second, remember that being disappointed isn't being unfaithful to your belief in God's greater purpose and plan. Psalm 34:18 tells us, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” He knows we will face disappointments, and He isn't surprised by them. 3.    Third, remind yourself and your child about God's view of them and you, not what the failure or disappointment might be causing you to think. YOU are not a disappointment. The situation may be, but the person is NOT. As Romans 8:1 says, “Therefore, there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” 4.    Next, you must shift perspectives and review whether your beliefs or thoughts set you up for this disappointment with unrealistic expectations. Our beliefs lead our thoughts which, in turn, lead our actions. As Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on YOUR OWN understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” 5.    And, finally, discuss why the disappointment might be a good thing. 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 reminds us that though we may be afflicted in every way, we are not crushed. We may be perplexed but not driven to despair. We may be persecuted but we are not forsaken, and we may be struck down, but we are not destroyed.   Disappointments can be challenges that lead us to trust God more and look to Him continually for our purposes, or we can let them allow us to conform ourselves to the world and its standards. Its standards of having to fight to win, the world's standards of success in all areas is all that matters, the world's standard that a good leader or worthy person must have never face disappointments along the way… but that just isn't true. Isaiah 40:29 says, “God gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength.” Humans don't always give God the glory when we think we have done all the work ourselves, but when we allow Him to guide us, renew us, repurpose and transform us, then we can see the good and give him the glory. We...

The Life of Joseph: Gen. 49:1-33 NIV – Jacob’s “Blessing” (Last Words) to His Sons…    Jacob’s Blessing or last words to his sons.   Rather than a blessing, it’s more of a Prophecy of what is to come.   Interesting note by David Guzik, Enduring Word, these were the first Prophetic words by a Man in the Bible. Genesis 49 Then Jacob called for his sons and said: “Gather around so I can tell you what will happen to you in days to come.2 “Assemble and listen, sons of Jacob; listen to your father Israel. 3 “Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might, the first sign of my strength, excelling in honor, excelling in power. 4 Turbulent as the waters, you will no longer excel, for you went up onto your father’s bed, onto my couch and defiled it. Rueben was the first born but forfeited his birthright through his pride and lust for the flesh… He slept with his Father’s concubine Bilhah, the mother of Dan and Naphtali (Gen. 35:22) Unstable like water. The least little thing causes water to become unstable.  Water follows the least path of resistance. You shall not excel. No Prophet, Judge, King ever came from the Tribe of Rueben.  Remember a few weeks ago, “Character and Integrity.”   5 “Simeon and Levi are brothers— their swords are weapons of violence. 6 Let me not enter their council, let me not join their assembly, for they have killed men in their anger and hamstrung oxen as they pleased. 7 Cursed be their anger, so fierce, and their fury, so cruel! I will scatter them in Jacob and disperse them in Israel. Simeon and Levi were the brothers who wiped out the men of Shechem for raping their sister Dinah. (Gen. 34:25-29) They were men of Fierce Anger, Hot heads… They killed Oxen just for fun. (Oxen were used for the farms…) Let me not enter their council, join their assembly… Don’t listen to or associate with men who are hot heads, they’re unstable and lack self-control. God will divide and scatter them… He did. Simeon (started out as the 3rd largest tribe) but became the weakest and smallest of all Tribes, sharing land with Judah. Levi, (The only Tribe that did not participate in worshipping the golden calf at Mt. Sinai.) was selected to serve God in the Temple.  No land of their own but lived in towns scattered all across Israel.   8 “Judah, your brothers will praise you; your hand will be on the neck of your enemies;  your father’s sons will bow down to you. 9 You are a lion’s cub, Judah; you return from the prey, my son. Like a lion he crouches and lies down, like a lioness—who dares to rouse him? 10 The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he to whom it belongs shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be his. 11 He will tether his donkey to a vine, his colt to the choicest branch; he will wash his garments in wine, his robes in the blood of grapes. 12 His eyes will be darker than wine, his teeth whiter than milk.   Judah, the brother who suggested selling Joseph into slavery, who left the family for a foreign country, intermarried with foreigners. Did his daughter-in-law wrong because he would not offer his youngest son to provide an heir for her after her husband died. Had sex with what he thought was a temple prostitute but it was really his daughter-in-law! When she became pregnant… his sin was exposed… “She is more righteous than I.” Judah repented and then offered his life for Benjamin… Judah inherits the lead role in the family. The scepter will not depart from Judah… Kings would come from Judah and eventually the KING OF KINGS… the LION of the Tribe of Judah – Jesus!   13 “Zebulun will live by the seashore and become a haven for ships; his border will extend toward Sidon. Zebulun was a trader with those who traveled the seas.   14 “Issachar is a rawboned donkey lying down among the sheep pens. 15 When he sees how good is his resting place and how pleasant is his...

HEBREW BIBLE EXODUS 3:1-15 Leader:  The first reading is from the book of Exodus, and is read responsively.Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law Jethro; he led the flock through the desert, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire, out of a bush; he looked, and the bush was blazing, but it was not consumed by the fire. Then Moses said, All:  “I will stop to look at this, and find out why the bush has not burned up.” When the Lord saw that he had turned aside, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, All:  “Here I am.” Then God said, “Come no closer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” Then God said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.Then the Lord said, “I have seen the misery of my people who are slaves in Egypt; I have heard their cry under the cruelty of their masters. I know their sufferings, and I have come down to deliver them from the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and wide land, a land flowing with milk and honey. The cry of the Israelites has now come to me; I have seen how the Egyptians oppress them. So come, I will send you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt.” But Moses said to God, All:  “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” God said, “I will be with you; and this shall be the sign for you that it is I who sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God on this very mountain.” But Moses said to God, All: “If I come to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is God’s name?’ what shall I say to them?”  God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” God added, “Thus you shall say to the Israelites, ‘I am has sent me to you. The Lord, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you’. This is my name forever, and this my title for all generations.”Leader: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.✠ THE GOOD NEWS Luke 15:1-3, 11b-32 Leader:  The good news of Jesus Christ, according to the gospel of Luke, the fifteenth chapter. All:  Glory to you, O Lord. Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him. And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, “This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.”So he told them this parable: “There was a man who had two sons. The younger son said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of the property that will be mine when you die.’ And the father did so. A few days later, the younger son gathered all he had and traveled to a distant country, and there he squandered all he had in extravagant living. When he had spent everything, a severe famine took place throughout that country, and the son found himself in need of food and money. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed the pigs. He longed for even a scrap of the food the pigs had, but no one gave him anything. He came to his senses and said, ‘How many of my father’s hired hands have more than enough to eat, and here I am dying of hunger! I will get up and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me like one of your hired hands.”’ So he set off and went to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him, and was filled with compassion; he ran to him, hugged him, and kissed his face. Then the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick, bring out a robe—the best one—and put it on him! Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Get the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; for this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found!’ And they began to celebrate. Now his elder son was in the field; and when he came towards the house, he heard music and dancing. He called one of the servants and asked what was going on. He replied, ‘Your brother has returned, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has got his son back safe and sound.’ Then the older was furious and refused to go inside. His father came out and begged him, but he answered, ‘Listen! For all these years I have been working like a slave for you, and I have never disobeyed your command; yet you have never given me even a young goat to kill and eat with my friends. But when this son of yours came back, who has devoured your property with extravagance, you killed the fatted calf for him!’ Then the father said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and has been found.’”SERMON Pastor EmmyA CELEBRATION OF MEN OF HEART Leader:  On this day when fathers and men are uplifted and celebrated, we join our voices both with those who grieve and those who rejoice, remembering the many fathers of faith who came before us.Leader:  We remember every man who held his newborn child and found it to be the greatest gift and the hardest task of all. We celebrate with you. All:  May the God who bears new life in us inspire love in you.Leader:  We remember fathers who, like Jarius the synagogue leader, have sat beside the beds of children who were sick, and cried out to God on their behalf. We pray alongside you. All:  May the God who fathers each of us be a source of life for you.Leader: We remember men who have sought to become fathers and yet, through many life circumstances, find themselves without children to care for. May you, like the Jewish leader Mordecai and the Ethiopian eunuch, find that in your faithfulness to God you bear children of hope to the whole world. All:  May the God who fathers each of us be a source of life for you.Leader: We grieve alongside men who, like David and Job, have buried their own children, and alongside men who, like Jacob, have lost their wives well before it seemed fair. We mourn with you. All:  May the God who fathers each of us be a source of life for you.Leader: We remember children who face this day, whether for the first time or for the fiftieth time, without a beloved father. May you, like Joseph son of Jacob, know with confidence that your father’s life is honored and his legacies remembered. We mourn with you. All:  May the God who fathers each of us be a source of life for you.Leader:  We remember those who face this day in pain from fathers who did not celebrate and uplift the image of God in their children. We celebrate those who, like Esau the brother of Jacob and Joseph Jacob’s son, refuse to continue the cycle of manipulation and abuse, but instead choose to step into reconciliation and healing. We celebrate with you. All:  May the God who bears new life in us inspire love in you.Leader: We remember and give thanks for men who, like Joseph the father of Jesus, have made a family through adoption and stepfatherhood. We celebrate with you. All:  May the God who bears new life in us inspire love in you.Leader: We remember all those who have found freedom and new life in the difficult process of divorce. We celebrate with you. All:  May the God who bears new life in us inspire love in you.Leader: We remember King David and the poets and prophets, who in their mourning and in their celebrating were unafraid to show the fullness of emotion. We celebrate with you. All:  May the God who bears new life in us inspire love in you.Leader: We lift up all your children, O God, who have reflected, in ways large and small, your overwhelming compassion. Wherever we may be this day, in grief or joy, may we find ourselves turned towards You, whom Jesus spoke of as a wastefully extravagant father, lavishing us with joy and peace. All: Amen.

Summary of today's show: Father Matt Westcott is a former Marine who loves being a diocesan priest, and yet he serves at perhaps the world's most prestigious university, Harvard, as chaplain to its Catholic undergraduates. Scot Landry and Fr. Matt Williams welcome Fr. Westcott to hear about his path to the priesthood and the four years he served in parishes before becoming Harvard's chaplain. They also discuss the unique joys and challenges of serving a student body that is highly accomplished and motivated and just doesn't know when to slow down. Listen to the show: Today's host(s): Scot Landry and Fr. Matt Williams Today's guest(s): Father Matt Westcott Links from today's show: Today's topics: Priest Profile: Father Matt Westcott 1st segment: Scot Landry welcomed everyone to the show and mentioned his kids had their first day of school. He then noted that since Fr. Matt Williams was last on the show over a month ago he was in the Dominican Republic with a pilgrimage of six young people for a mission experience as part of their leadership curriculum, which follows after Witness to Truth and Witness to Love retreat courses. They partner with Sr. Lisa Valentini, who's been on the show several times. He thinks these young people will never look at the world the same way again. Fr. Matt then related a story of one of these life changing encounters with a family there. Scot said Boston is known as a university town and the Archdiocese has a special responsibility to help form in the faith young people who come here from across the globe. The undergraduate chaplain at the Harvard Catholic Student Association and parochial vicar at St. Paul Parish in Cambridge. He was ordained in 2007. He's originally from St. Clement in Somerville, which he says is now technically in Medford. HE sometimes jokes that growing up it felt like a 1950s parish with a bunch of priests in the rectory, full schools and pews, and lots of activities. Everything in life was parish-based. Fr. Westcott also worked in the rectory as a youth, answering the door and phones. He got to see the day to day life of the priest, which later influenced his decision to enter the seminary. After St. Clement's high school, he entered Norwich University in Vermont in 1993. It is a military college and he intended to make a career in the military and served in the US Marine Corps. He went on to law school later and graduated in 2000. He entered seminary in Fall 2001 in order to give God one year to show him whether he was being called to the priesthood. What he was looking for whether Jesus was enough for him in whatever way he is called. He said the decision to enter the seminary is the decision to discern along with the Church whether the man is called. The discernment is by both the man and the community of the Church. Scot said the month he entered the seminary was the attacks of 9/11 and just four months after entering the clergy abuse scandal broke. He said it was actually a good time to be in the seminary because they weren't in the parishes like the priests were and weren't in the battle. For most of the men it served as galvanizing force for them to take to heart the call to holiness. For Fr. Westcott, he was very excited about being a Boston diocesan priest. It is where the grace of God intersects with the every day existence. The parish priest, among all the roles in the Church, walks with people in the joys and tragedies and routine of life. After ordination, Fr. Westcott spent his first three years at St. Mary in Scituate. He still feels close to the people in that town. The community was based seriously on the Gospel and were serious about their town. He then went to St. Mary in Foxboro for only one year. Then he was asked to become undergraduate chaplain for Harvard. Fr. Westcott had anticipated being asked to be pastor, and he hadn't considered specialized ministry. One of the threads of his priesthood was his friendship with Fr. Bill Murphy and he was his predecessor at Harvard, so they talked about it. It is very different from parish work. The work is much less sacramental–fewer baptisms, funerals, and weddings– and the pace is different. Scot asked what the typical day is like for the chaplain. Fr. Westcott said the typical parish priest is more free to plan disown day, until there's an emergency call. Working with undergrads, he finds himself on their schedule. The opportunity to meet them when and where they're free is crucial because they're not working 9–5 lives. He might says the 8am Mass at St. Paul's and then be out of the residence until 11pm. The goal is authenticity, to be visible and approachable. One way is to wear his collar and walk through Harvard Yard. They then commented on Fr. Westcott's accent saying Harvard Yard. Fr. Williams asked Fr. Westcott his greatest challenges in fulfilling his role as priest-chaplain. Fr. Westcott said Harvard is unique. All the students are smart, but the students are also extraordinarily driven. They take tasks on themselves and want pressure. Motivating a Harvard student isn't a problem, but getting them to slow down and cultivate silence is. They need to give themselves time to explore how the Holy Spirit is working in their lives. Even when they're doing good things, it can stifle one's spirit because they don't have time or energy to dedicate to prayer. As a practical matter, he preaches about and talks about it in personal conversation. Scot asked about fielding the very tough questions from very smart and motivated students. Fr. Westcott said some of the conversations he has are almost like a seminar. Once they see the willingness to learn more, the students are capable. 2nd segment: This week's benefactor card raffle winner is Joseph Jacob from Newton Center, MA He wins a CD from the Envoy Institute: "the Roots of Modern Atheism" by Dr. Ed Fesem and the booklet "Catholics in the Public Square" by Bishop Thomas Olmsted of Phoenix. Westcott talked about the four missionaries from Fellowship of Catholic University Student who help him to reach the students where they are, in places that Fr. Westcott generally isn't available and they also meet them in in all phases of life, including social. FOCUS works on many college campuses across the country and they work closely with Fr. Westcott to ensure they are meeting the unique needs of Harvard. The vision and methodology are well in place as they begin the new academic year. Fr. Westcott said there is no shortage of information and material from FOCUS to help him work together with them. one of the FOCUS missionaries is the leader and he helps to ensure they're on the same page, coordinating calendars, etc. The guidance generally comes from the Catholic Center out to the FOCUS team. He's impressed by their dedication to daily Mass and a duly Holy Hour. FOCUS does a good job of taking care of their own missionaries and a regional coordinator also coordinates with Fr. Westcott and the pastor at St. Paul's. Scot said he guessed about 400–500 freshmen at Harvard are Catholic. Fr. Westcott said there's no shortage of opportunities for Harvard students to spend their time doing many things, but they encourage them to get involved in mall faith-sharing groups to give them a personal investment in the life of the Catholic Center and to create personal relationships. Scot noted that they now have adoration in the chapel. Fr. Westcott said they are clear that the Eucharist is the center of Catholic life and their is great desire among the students for expressions of devotion that are Eucharist centered. Scot notes that St. Paul's is a parish that appreciates liturgy done well. There will be a special kickoff Mass on September 16, 11am, celebrated by Bishop Jim Connolly of Denver, for the new academic school year. He'll then give a lecture after. Fr. Westcott said the Mass of the Holy Spirit derives from the great golden age of the universities of Europe, which began the academic year invoking the Holy Spirit in the pursuit of truth. Bishop Connolly has been invited as a bridge between FOCUS and the diocesan chaplaincy. He's a friend of FOCUS and St. Paul's pastor, Fr. Michael Drea. He will address the pursuit of academic truth and the life of the Church. Fr. Westcott said he hasn't gone a day without being tremendously impressed by several students, not just by their resumes, but by their hearts and desire to live lives as holy men and women with authenticity in the world and for God. Scot said one of the most moving moments in his time serving the Archdiocese was the funeral Mass for one of Fr. Westcott's classmates, Fr. Dan Kennedy, who died just 8 months after being ordained. He recalls all the priests singing at the end of Mass, Cardinal Seán's palpable emotion at Fr. Dan's passing, and Fr. Dan's father's talk at the end of Mass which was perhaps the best vocation talk he's ever heard. He asked Fr. Westcott how this event has affected him. Fr. Westcott said they became friends the first year in the seminary. Neither remembers meeting, but they always seemed to have been friends. Fr. Dan remains close to him and there isn't a day that goes by that he doesn't think of something he'd like to talk to Dan about. He also remains close to Fr. Dan's family. Fr. Westcott said Fr. Dan died one year to the day from when they were ordained deacons. Fr. Westcott says he finds himself praying for the intercession of Fr. Dan for vocations to the priesthood, but also for many of the young couples Fr. Westcott encounters. He was always very gregarious and joyful in his priesthood and touched many, many people in his brief time. Fr. Westcott clarifies that he's not claiming Fr. Dan is a saint, but he's relying on the graces and devotions we make for the deceased and has a private conviction that Fr. Dan is in heaven. Scot asked for prayers for Fr. Dan and for people to pray to him. Scot also noted that today is also the 15th anniversary of the death of Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta.
