Early cinema, despite a lack of conventional sound, has always been engaging as an experience since it's typically been paired with live scores to match a specific film's tone. Screening with live scores can still be found today, but Austin's Blue Starlite Mini Urban Drive-In founder Josh Frank decided to put an interesting spin on the classic concept; Frank decided to change up the experience by pairing silent films with contemporary live performances by bands like Radiohead and R.E.M.. For its first installment of screenings, played in art theaters and drive-ins across the country, they'll be pairing the 1922 horror film Nosferatu with Radiohead's albums Kid A and Amnesiac. So today on FilmWeek, we talk to Josh Frank about his latest venture and the thought process behind it.

And what can be done to improve the communication between doctors and patients on these health matters? And the Oscars are Sunday night, but we reflect on a movie that never got made. It was called Giraffes on Horseback Salad, and the screenplay was the product of an unusual collaboration between comedian Harpo Marx and surrealist painter Salvador Dalí. While it never made it to the big screen, Houston native Josh Frank made it into a graphic novel by the same name. We revisit our 2019 conversation with Frank.

This book, based on an unmade screenplay written for the Marx Brothers by none other than surrealist Salvador Dali and adapted by Josh with Tim Heidecker offers a unique chance to see something that could have been. A film that will never be made, brought to life via the medium of comics. This episode is a nod to the crate diggers. Phil Ranelin may be considered underground, but he's an artist of large stature in the world of rare grooves. Sought after by collectors, and for use of samples and remixes, Ranelin's music is now widely accepted which nearly eluded him since he began back in the '60s. His Collected Works 2003- 2019 from Wide Hive Records prove what a treasure he is. You don't even have to take our word for it, Motown, Stevie Wonder, Freddie Hubbard, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and John McEntire of Tortoise have been hip to the notion all along. Ranelin's music is all his own, leaning towards an Afro-centric soul vibe with a dissonant cry of freedom, future, and self-expression. Along for the ride is fellow jazz titan Pharoah Sanders, and young lion Kamasi Washington. We got Mr. Ranelin on the line to share his thoughts and feelings about this proper retrospective. Crate digging is generally a pastime involving vinyl records, but it could be applied to books and rare artifacts–something Josh Frank does all at once. First an author (notably of the post-modern biography In Heaven Everything Is Fine and co-author with Frank Black of the Pixies in The Good Inn), and now a pop culture explorer, Frank unearthed, "directed," and scored the long lost film project between surrealist artist Salvador Dali and the Marx Brothers. Need a minute to ponder that? Wait 'til you hear the title: Giraffes On Horseback Salad. Frank has done the impossible by adapting this once long-lost curio as a fully formed, eye-popping graphic novel. In keeping with Dali's wishes, he also produced a soundtrack in the vein of Cole Porter with the help of Pepe Deluxe and Quin Arbeitman. It's a score that's all things old Hollywood, absurd, delightful and as zany as anything the Marx Brothers did during their time on earth, and now in the hereafter. Or is it? Josh Frank helps makes heads or tail of it all. ABOUT THE MAJOR SCALE: Your attention please to a new program that celebrates and takes a fresh and bold look at the great American art form- JAZZ!!! The Major Scale is the title, the motto and the mission are, Jazz- past, present, future, and everything in between. A lot of focus will be on new and fresh sounds, deep cuts, closer looks at underrated artists, taking a different look at some of the titans of the genre, and getting the two cents worth from a number of surprise guests and sources. The Major Scale can boast amongst it's guests- legends like Herbie Hancock, Tom Scott, and Ahmad Jamal. The up and coming and the underrated-Kamasi Washington, Mia Doi Todd, Michael Blake. Fresh perspectives and commentary from the likes of Rock legend Al Kooper, who weighed in on the gospel. From The New Yorker, Amanda Petrusich expounds on her article about the movement to rename the Williamsburg Bridge in honor of Sonny Rollins. We explore the Soul-Jazz experiments of the Rascals. Grace Kelly from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert talks about her pop-up/flash mob concerts. Plus Thundercat, Henry Mancini, Ghostface Killah, Jaimie Branch, Nels Cline, Badbadnotgood, Cecil Taylor, and more get pick up on the Major Scale radar. Produced in Central Florida, this program seeks to become one of the defining voices of this Native American art form, and everything else that finds itself under it's umbrella. Think about programming and content found on the likes of World Cafe, Philadelphia, PA. Tiny Desk from Washington D.C., and KEXP Live from Seattle, WA. and that's what the Major Scale strives to do. For the curious, and lovers of music who like the details in between. ABOUT KYLE EAGLE (Host): Kyle Eagle has been a contributing writer and producer for the NPR-WBGO, WUCF, WPRK, Wax Poetics, The Orlando Weekly, Artbourne, and The Fiscal Times, as well as several music and film releases- Light in the Attic's documentary "This Is Gary McFarland", and an upcoming film on composer Jack Nietzsche. Recordings- Call Me-Jack Wilson, Live at the Penthouse, Grachan Moncur III, Chico Hamilton, and Andy Bey. ABOUT CHRIS BARANYI (Producer): Chris Baranyi is a sound engineer and music producer. He splits his time between designing AV systems for theme parks and recording music. I caught author & pop culture archeologist Josh Frank in the midst of touring for his great new book Giraffes on Horseback Salad, a graphic novel that bills itself as the legendary unmade film collaboration between real-life friends and absurdist kindred spirits Salvador Dalí and Harpo Marx. Josh gives the fascinating background to how the project — his fourth in a series of ‘lost histories’ (the second of which was coauthored by yours truly) — came to be, and many times almost didn’t. He gets into his lifelong obsession with lost layers of pop-culture history and the intense ups, downs, and general non-linearity of life as a working, wandering artist.

Even some of the most devoted of Marx Brothers fans don’t know about this project: a wild, fantastical movie script that Surrealist artist Salvador Dali wrote for the comedy icons, after forging a fast friendship with the most beloved of the Marxes, Harpo. The movie was called Giraffes on Horseback Salad, and not only was it too over the top to get made, the film script was also lost to history. Until now. Pop culture archaeologist, and lifelong Marx Brothers fan, Josh Frank, spent six years piecing the storyline together from copious amounts of research and contact with both the Dali and Marx camps. Now he’s turned it into a new book – also called Giraffes on Horseback Salad – that unfolds the story behind the story and presents the script as a gorgeous graphic novel. We talk to Harris about his must-read new passion project on this week’s Pop Literacy. My guest on today’s show undertook the enormous task of writing a graphic novel version of the strangest movie never made.  Writer Josh Frank presents the all signing, all talking Giraffes on Horseback Salad, a graphic novel published by Quirk Books, which is based on the undeveloped screenplay by Salvador Dali for The Marx Brothers.  It is the fantastical tale of a businessman named Jimmy who finds himself drawn to the mysterious Surrealistic Woman, a figure whose very presence can transform reality. With the help of The Marx Brothers, Jimmy tries to join her strange world, but the forces of normalcy seek to end their romance.  The book is a must-read for fans of Salvador Dali or The Marx Brothers or both. The author Josh Frank is a life-long fan of The Marx Brothers and did extensive research for the book, including having Dali’s hand written script and film treatment translated. Where additional Marx Brothers gags were needed to complete Dali’s unfinished script, Josh enlisted the talent of Tim Heidecker of the Tim and Eric Show. Spanish artist Manuela Pertega provided the surrealistic illustrations for the graphic novel. Josh discusses how he became interested in little unknown pop culture history, which ultimately led to his crowning achievement to date, Giraffes on Horseback Salad. How have The Marx Brothers comic genius and sense of anarchy influenced later comedy filmmakers? How did Harpo Marx and Salvador Dali strike a friendship?  Where was Salvador Dali in his life at the time he and Harpo made the film pitch to MGM?  And how did Dali’s current outlook influence the obstacles Jimmy was so desperate to over come in the screenplay? How does Josh’s day, or rather night job, dovetail with his passion for classic films?  Which of The Marx Brothers’ films is Josh’s personal favorite, and which is the most underrated? And how the heck does Zeppo figure into all of it? All this and more in my Kicking Back With The Creator segment!   Please take a moment to rate Creator Talks on iTunes More about The Creator  About the book Giraffes on Horseback Salad This episode is sponsored The Comic Book Shop, where comics as for everyone
