Interview by Kris PetersRight before the turn of the century, casual jam sessions between a group of friends unassumingly lit the fuse for an insane 25-year ride to follow…Hailing from Western Massachusetts (where the only thing icier than the freeway in winter is the blunt sense of humour shared by the locals), Killswitch Engage — Adam Dutkiewicz [guitar], Joel Stroetzel [guitar], Mike D'Antonio [bass], Justin Foley [drums], and Jesse Leach [vocals] — always stood apart. For as deadly serious as their airtight technical riffing is, they also knew how to have a good time, riling up crowds with uncontainable energy and unpredictable performances. They could bludgeon with the best of them, or serve up the kind of sing-along banger you could blast with the windows down. From day one, they naturally appealed to the headbangers, hardcore kids, and heartbroken alike. With eight successful albums under their belt, Killswitch Engage haveharnessed all of their strengths on their ninth full-length LP, This Consequence. They've distilled the hallmarks of their signature sound into a bruising, often brutal, and at times brilliantly bright body of work. This time around, the group emphasized working together face-to-face in a Massachusetts rehearsal spot. The process enabled them to apply the pressure on every element. At the collective urging of his bandmates, Jesse poured over his words like never before. Now, This Consequence might just set the stage for another 25 years of Killswitch Engage.HEAVY caught up with frontman Jesse Leach to find out more."Excited," he smiled when we ask how he is feeling about the impending release of This Consequence. "It's been a long time coming for many reasons. There's a bit of excited anxiety, like let's just get it out there. Let's just get it out there and start playing for the people."We ask if, after eight previous albums, the excitement levels during the lead into an album release are still the same."It's a little different now," he measured. "It's still very exciting, but there's a certain amount of… I don't wanna use the word ease, but just comfort in the fact that we've done this enough. I think with this record, especially, we all feel like this feels like taking it to the next level. Even the decision to change the logo up… it just feels like a shift into a different era of the band. So there's an added excitement, but also a calm feeling that this feels right."In the full interview, Jesse outlines the musical side of This Consequence, the first single Forever Aligned and why it was chosen to represent the album, the title and its significance, how this album is more of a collaboration than recent efforts, the bands blending of harmonies with brutality and how it works in the creative process, the early days of Killswitch Engage and where they fit in, how their music has changed over the years and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

My 3 Questions To: Justin Foley (Killswitch Engage-Lybica).
We had the pleasure of interviewing Lybica over Zoom video!Meet Lybica, a dynamic instrumental 3-piece force from south Florida that seamlessly blends flavorful guitar melody with powerful metallic crunch. Lybica will take you on an epic musical journey of peaks and valleys where the possibilities are endless.Lybica was first conceived in 2020 when it became clear to Justin Foley (drummer of Killswitch Engage) that he wasn't going to be spending much time with his normal dudes for a while. Quarantine days still needed to be time well spent, and he'd been working on some demos that he finally decided to share with a few local friends in south Florida. “I'd written a bunch of stuff that didn't quite fit into traditional song structures,” explains Justin, “and I've always been drawn to bands where the instruments provide hooks, rather than relying on a lyric. It seemed like a good time to start something new and see where it could go.”Justin had met fellow musicians Doug French (Gravel Kings) and Joey Johnson (Gravel Kings, Barriers Now Bridges, Days Spent) back in 2016 and they had repeatedly talked about jamming together but never actually got around to it. Justin and Doug, both drummers, often spoke about trying something different that allowed them each to get out from behind the kit. “I've always wanted to play a stringed instrument”, says Doug, “and bass felt natural since it is the other half of the rhythm section.”Guitarist Joey Johnson grew up playing shows all over Florida, heavily influenced by early punk and then both hardcore and metal. “All the good places to get a beer kept asking me if I had met Justin, since they know I play music. I heard about him in our town for about a year before we actually met through mutual friends. We hit it off when we started talking instrumental music.”So when Doug and Joey eventually received the demos from Justin, they really liked what they heard. For several months the three emailed music back and forth while learning the parts, especially Justin (guitar) and Doug (bass) on instruments they weren't experienced playing. They eventually started playing together with the drum tracks from the demos blasting through the PA speakers. Before too long they had enough music for a full record and the direction of the band was starting to take shape. The trio soon discovered that they had something else in common besides music. “The three of us are pretty big cat people,” Justin points out, “so it only made sense to call the band Lybica.” Named after a small wildcat species native to Africa that is widely considered the godfather of the modern house cat, Lybica is the first known feline species to be tamed and domesticated by humans.Fast forward 10,000 years, and today Lybica the band are as addictive as catnip. With plans to release their debut self-titled full length album later this year, Lybica is poised to make some serious noise in 2021 and beyond, fur-real!We want to hear from you! It's easy to spiral from the seemingly smallest things during the pandemic. Life has been really tough for a long time now. But one thing, one huge thing, has helped immeasurably: being sober. And in this episode, Brandon shares his experience of leaning into the AA community and reaching his first year of sobriety. Choosing a life of sobriety, he says, has been the hardest and most gratifying thing he's ever done. Brandon is a brilliant human, an empath, and an authentic voice on and off screen, which makes him a dream to talk to. We swap stories on living solo during the pandemic, about self-reflection and engaging in the quality of friendships. We talk about shows that are bold enough to tackle storytelling in a different way, and his character as the complex and conflicted heartthrob, Justin Foley, in the Netflix hit series, 13 Reasons Why. And lastly, we look at how the culture of curiosity plays a part in activism and community work. Enjoy listening. And mad amounts of love. As Daylight Dies, «The Arms of Sorrow».

Division II Top Bracket St. Cloud State is looking to win its third straight National Duals crown and a fifth overall. Currently riding a Division II-best 35-match win streak, the Huskies will be the top seed and open with Seton Hill in a rematch of last year’s final which St. Cloud State won 41-0. The Huskies (7-0) also bring a Division II-best eight nationally ranked wrestlers to Louisville, led by top-ranked 125-pounder and 2016 NCAA Division II champion Brett Velasquez and top-ranked 197-pounder Vince Dietz, a Division II runner-up a year ago. The winner of the dual will face the winner of the Upper Iowa-West Liberty dual in the quarterfinals. Upper Iowa, seeded eighth, has four nationally ranked wrestlers to contend with, led by Justin Foley at 133 and Dalton Hahn at 184 pounds. The pair comes in ranked seventh. There’s one matchup between ranked foes that could take place and that’s at 197 pounds where West Liberty’s Logan Kemp is ranked seventh and Upper Iowa returning All-American Nick Baumler is ranked No. 12. Despite its amazing wrestling tradition, the Mountain Cats of Pitt-Johnstown have never finished higher than third at the National Duals. That third-place finish came back in 2016 and longtime coach Pat Pecora’s squad will come to Louisville with five ranked wrestlers, including top-ranked returning Division II national champion Chris Eddins at 149 pounds. The Mountain Cats open with Fort Hays State, which has placed in the top eight just once in school history. Coach Chas Thompson’s team finished fifth back in 2014. The key matchup is a possible national final at 133 pounds as 2017 All-American Brandon Ball is ranked second for Fort Hays State, while UPJ counters with third-ranked Joey Alessandro. The winner of this dual will advance to the quarterfinals to face either Indianapolis or No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney. While Nebraska-Kearney is ranked No. 1 in Division II, that ranking is based on a tournament point projection by how teams’ individual wrestlers are slotted in the rankings. The Division II Coaches Association seeded the National Duals based on dual strength as each region had a representative submit their votes for the top eight seeds. The Lopers will face a UIndy team that could make things interesting as the Greyhounds have three ranked wrestlers in the mix. The Lopers boast a pair of top-ranked wrestlers – Matt Malcolm at 157 and Calvin Ochs at 165. The top matchup comes at heavyweight as UIndy’s Dylan Faulkenberg comes in ranked third, ahead of returning All-American and fifth-ranked Jarrod Hinrichs. Bottom Bracket Third-seeded Notre Dame College is loaded again as the Falcons have five ranked wrestlers and return All-Americans Kelan McKenna (133), Tony Vezzetti (184) and Kameron Teacher (285). They’ll face UW-Parkside, which returns All-Americans Airk Furseth (133) and James Lehman, who was an All-American at 197 last season, but has competed at 184 this year. The winner will advance to face either No. 6 Lindenwood or Wheeling Jesuit. While Seton Hill was the unseeded team making a run to the finals last year, the year prior, it was Wheeling Jesuit that crashed the party. The Cardinals again find themselves unseeded, opening up with No. 6 Lindenwood. With 11 wrestlers ranked between the two teams and three matches head-to-head involving ranked wrestlers, the key for advancing in this tight dual will be bonus points. Third-ranked Carlos Jacquez of Lindenwood has been on fire recently, winning the Midwest Classic. He’ll face fifth-ranked Cole Laya. Danny Swan was a solid fifth at the Midwest Classic and he’ll match-up with returning All-American Tyler Warner of Wheeling Jesuit at 133. The dual could come down to a pair of ranked heavyweights as Wheeling Jesuit has a strong presence with returning national champion Terrance Fanning. Lindenwood can counter with 11th-ranked Courvosier Morrow. The rest of that quarter bracket involves seventh-seeded Central Oklahoma squaring off with Gannon and second-seeded McKendree drawing Limestone to open the round. UCO has placed in the top eight 15 times and was a 2002 winner of the event. The Bronchos (yes, with an h) have three ranked individuals, while Gannon’s top individual is fifth-ranked George McGuire at 157 pounds. McKendree is a solid No. 2 seed and the Bearcats are looking to set a new program record for highest men’s finish. The team finished fifth in 2017, while the school’s women’s program has two National Duals runner-up finishes to its credit. McKendree has been bolstered by the availability of Michael Pixley, a past NAIA national champion who transferred from Grand View and had previously been an NAIA finalist at Lindsey Wilson. With no ranked wrestlers, Limestone will have a monumental task ahead of itself should the Saints want to be this season’s Cinderella. Live From The Barrage
Prolog: school and mice. Justin Foley rocks out to KISS and makes new friends, Matt and Jerry. Annette Barker stresses about the first day of school.
We were joined by two special guests on this edition of the Metal Injection Livecast, Justin Foley of The Austerity Program and our good friend Axl Rosenberg of MetalSucks. We opened the show talking about Sid's honeymoon and his experience taking public transportation in San Francisco. Rob and Axl recalled a story of how they were on a bear trail and could've died out there. Rob then read a letter that he got from Slayer's publishing company in regards to the website he created, TomArayaScream.com. During hour two, we went through a thorough analysis of the merits of Metallica breaking up or staying together. Here is this week's playlist: Meshuggah – Combustion (Toronto) Carcass – Cross My Heart Obscura – Ocean Gateways Goes Cube – Year Of The Human Gojira – Yama's Messangers
