Las Vegas is on everyone's mind who follows the world of Division I wrestling and that also means me. There's a bunch of Vegas-related content in the newsletter today, so again, you can find out how to get that daily at the end of the show. I was on the mic Thursday here in the Twin Cities - more on that in a bit, this is Short Time Shots, a look at the day's results in and around college wrestling. Right now, if you hear any banging around, it's because I'm getting a new furnace installed this morning. Yup. Thankfully before it his absolute zero here this winter. Our installer used to wrestle, too. Links: Did you know you can find all the D1 dual meet scores and links to their results at collegewrestlingscoreboard.com AND I've added another redirect to help you follow all the tournaments from every division at collegewrestlingtournaments.com. As to the aforementioned Minnesota match, Division III's top-ranked team, Augsburg, blanked No. 25 Loras 46-0 at Si Melby Hall. Augsburg won four matchups between ranked wrestlers, including returning national champion Sam Stuhl earning an 11-2 major decision over No. 13 Jalen Schropp at 141 pounds. Top-ranked heavyweight Tyler Kim and 184-pounder Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann picked big bonus victories - Kim with the fall and BSO (his name is too long to keep repeating) with the tech. Other scores around Division III saw Carthage beat Elmhurst 29-15, and Central, that's it, just Central, pushed past Augustana (Ill.) 36-9. UW-Stevens Point trounced UW-Oshkoh (B'Gosh) 40-18. Augustana did beat Simpson (Iowa) The only Division I match of the night featured a pair of transitional programs as Bellarmine heads out to Missouri and beat Lindenwood 35-7. There were some exciting duals in Division II, including Kutztown winning the last five bouts to pull away past Seton Hill 34-15. Both of Kutztown's ranked wrestlers - No. 11 Dalton Gimbor at 165 and third-ranked Matthew Weinberg at 184 - won. Gimbor beat Kane Kettering while Weinberg picked up a forfeit. I hate forfeit. Millersville beat East Stroudsburg 23-19. Colorado School of Mines won the last six weights to top New Mexico Highlands 31-13. Colorado Mesa beat rival Western Colorado 24-17. Davenport beat NAIA Cleary 37-12. Down south, Coker blanked Bluefield State (that's in West Virginia), while Belmont Abbey beat Emory & Henry 48-3. Emory & Henry is transitioning from Division III to Division II. In the NAIA, Ottawa beat Avila 35-13. On the women's side, Grand View beat Central Methodist 27-18, Cedar Crest beat Alvernia 32-16 in the school's first ever home women's wrestling dual. Sioux Falls new women's program improved to 2-0 with a win over Minot State 39-13 and Lock Haven beat Elmira 35-12. Subscribe, for free, to my Daily Wrestling News. Episode 232 is with my friend Demi Michelle Schwartz. Demi is a singer/songwriter and author. She returns to update us on all of the latest projects and things she is working on. You will love her fun spirit and fearless goals. From her website - Demi Michelle Schwartz is an author from Pittsburgh, PA. She's loved reading YoungAdult Mysteries and Thrillers from a young age, and she's inspired by the work of Sara Shepard and Karen M. McManus. Being drawn to these thrilling and twisty novels for the YA audience eventually led her to step into the shoes of an author herself. There's something so enchanting about these stories that pulls her in, beyond the clues, red herrings, and dangerous twists and turns. She's drawn in by the realism and truth that these stories are ones that could happen. There's so much to be gleaned from the way protagonists act and react in the face of danger and how a complex puzzle can lead to justice being served or the lingering feeling of the world still being slightly off-balance. So much can be learned about the human condition from these stories, and Demi continues to explore this concept both as a reader and author of crime fiction.Demi earned both a BA in Creative Writing and BA in Music at Seton Hill University inGreensburg, PA. With encouragement from her undergraduate English professors, she went on to pursue her MFA in Writing Popular Fiction at Seton Hill and graduated with her degree in June of 2022. She has finished writing her debut YA Mystery novel and is currently seeking representation. When Demi isn't revising her second novel, a YA Psychological Thriller, she's busychasing her other dream as a songwriter. Her creativity knows no bounds because along withbeing a creative writer and songwriter, she's the host of her own podcast, Write on Track: ASongwriting Podcast. Whether Demi is writing a full-length novel or crafting her next song, she always aims to inspire and encourage others to shoot for the stars. For more about Demi, visit her website - https://demimschwartz.com/

(December 14, 2021 – Hour Two) 10:14pm: The unofficial (official) band of the BBQ Central show's lead singer, Jose Urquiza from 3 Years Hollow, joins the show after a 10 year lay-off! Tonight Jose and I will talk about what the band has endured from 2010-2015 and then look back at the past 5 years. How does the band look since 2010, what challenges have they faced and overcome, does Jose have any famous friends and I will ask him what advice he gives to kids looking to break into the music business today! Not familiar with 3 Years Hollow?? Here is a link to their page on Spotify! there is a good chance you will recognize some of their riffs!! 10:35pm: Closing the show tonight is someone who has brought me a ton of joy over the past 20 years…my oldest daughter, Bobbi Rempe. As I mentioned last Tuesday, Bobbi is going in for another big hip surgery today (which is why the show is pre-recorded…BUT NEW) and we sat down over the weekend and talked about the 2021 volleyball season at Seton Hill and then we talked about what she expects from this surgery and her associated recovery. It is pretty crazy to hear what she is in for (again) almost 2 years removed from the same thing being done to the right hip. BBQ Central Show Sponsors! Don Bentley read his first Tom Clancy novel when he was 13 years old. This Army Veteran is now writing for the “Tom Clancy universe” with his first novel achieving best seller status. Both Don's grandfather and father served in the military. He was awarded an Army ROTC scholarship to Ohio State University and went on to fly Apache gunships. Don flew as part of the Quick Reaction Force on Operation Red Wings. Following his Army career, Don briefly tried the corporate world but found he wasn't quite ready for the cubicle life. He joined the FBI, serving on the Dallas office SWAT team. He then accepted an offer from some Army friends who founded a company that developed technologies for the special operations community. Don started his first novel in high school and his teacher told him he shouldn't give up on that dream. Enrolling in the Seton Hill writing popular fiction master's program proved to be a defining moment in his career. A contact he made at the Thrillerfest Conference told him “not this book but go home and write a better book.” Don took her suggestion and it became his first book sale. Don Bentley was finding success with his Matt Drake series when he was approached to join the Tom Clancy team to write “Target Acquired”, the latest novel in their Jack Ryan Jr. series. He says the closest equivalent would be a science fiction writer being asked to write the next Star Wars book. We also discuss Don's perspective on the withdrawal from Afghanistan and his opinion piece published in the National Review “Afghanistan – Was It Worth It?” While he believes our initial entry into Afghanistan was justified, he also emphasizes that democracy is not something that can be imposed and exported. “By God, if we would have just summoned the national will to do that, executing a noncombatant evacuation operation in Afghanistan is far from an unsurmountable task.” TAKEAWAY: “If you discount the 17 years and three books that didn't sell, I am an overnight success!”
Coach Dunn breaks down the IUP game and looks ahead to Seton Hill.
https://www.linkedin.com/in/collins-michael-a4921413a/ (Mike Collins) is the head baseball coach at https://www.bloomu.edu/ (Bloomsburg University. ) Coach Collins is the all time winningest coach in program history. He is a 3x winner of the PSAC Coach of the Year and in the Spring of 2021 lead the Huskies to their first ever back to back PSAC Championships when they knocked off #6 in the nation Seton Hill on their home turf. Mike, a native of Scranton, PA, graduated from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia with a Bachelor of Arts in politics. At Saint Joe's, Mike played Division I baseball where he was a two-time team captain and four-year letter winner. After suffering a season ending knee injury during his senior year, Mike spent a lot of time during his rehab just sitting in the dugout and observing and learning the game from a different perspective. He then got the idea that he wanted to become a baseball coach after his playing career was over. After graduating college, Mike Collins had to put in long hours and even longer cross-country drives to make his dream of being a head coach a reality. Mike's first coaching job was at Keystone junior college, where he not only had to build a program, but had to work blue collar jobs when not on the field to help pay the bills. Then Mike moved on to Binghamton University where he served as assistant coach and head of recruiting. His recruiting duties at Binghamton found him living out of his car and driving across the country scouting prospects from PA to California. It was not unusual for Mike to leave the field after a game, jump into his car and drive across country to go recruit. In 2005, Mike Collins was offered the head coaching job at Bloomsburg University, a program that at the time was in need of a rebuild. Mike and I discuss what he looks for in the student athletes and how his program at Bloomsburg has evolved into a Division 2 powerhouse in the highly competitive PSAC. Coach Collins also tells us why he believes a successful college program is not defined by wins and losses only. We discuss his “40-year Plan” that focuses on helping his players develop into future leaders that will play a positive role in the local communities and helps them succeed in life long after their playing days are over. Coach Collins also discusses why it's so important his players play a positive role in their local community and how the program engages their alumni to help work with their current players as they get ready to enter the work force. We also get into why positivity plays such an important role in his leadership style, what book has influenced him and the intangibles that make a great collegiate baseball player Thank you for listening. If you like what you hear, please HIT the SUBSCRIBE BUTTON. We have a bunch of cool interviews, like this one, to come. The fantasy… the employees will enjoy the training and will apply their new knowledge in the workplace. We pay them to do this, so participants should apply their new skills and develop an attitude to solve problems. The reality... most corporate training is dry, dull, boring, and unimaginative. Participants are secretly contemplating ways to "end it now" so that they don't have to sit through another 4 hours of this mind-numbing drivel. There will be no application of knowledge and absolutely nothing will change in workplace behavior. Enter gamification – driving motivation, with the hope of engaging us and alluring us just as games do. But with a potentially significant cost for development and a high chance of failure, is gamification something that we can or should recommend to the C-team? This week, learn how to use a low-tech, low-cost, high-impact gamification strategy as your gateway drug. Get 'em hooked and coming back for more! Gamification doesn't need to be complicated, sometimes all you need is a simple score to change behavior. Score science is a practice that helps you get it right. Toby Beresford created rise.global in his garage in 2012 as a tool to keep and share digital scores. It's now being used by senior influencers across the world to track their own social media success and to encourage others to do the same. Gamification is still just a buzzword for some, while for others they've already implemented it with powerful effects on their business process. We've seen some gamification projects which have a very pretty design but have failed to engage users and others with a very ugly interface but are addictively engaging their users! Gamification as a tool for designing engaging experiences should not be restricted by technology. There is a need for physical and digital experiences to be merged AND playful and gameful inspirations should be at the heart of such a design process.
