I sign off every episode of Reppin with “Stand Up and Represent.” My next guest truly LIVES this mantra. Karen Olivo is a powerhouse talent. They're an American stage and television actor, theater educator, and singer. In 2008 Karen originated the role of Vanessa in In The Heights on Broadway. The following year, they won the 2009 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress In A Musical for their performance as Anita in a revival of West Side Story. They are the first and only actor to win a Tony award for a performance in West Side Story. From 2016 to 2017, Olivo portrayed the role of Angelica Schuler in the Chicago production of Hamilton 2019, Olivo originated the lead role of Satine in the stage adaptation of Moulin Rouge on Broadway and was nominated for the 2020 Tony Award For Best Actress in a Musical. With this incredible, illustrious career, Karen risked it ALL when they publicly spoke out against a very powerful and influential producer. We've all encountered bullies and difficult bosses-but would YOU have the courage, truth —and readiness to do what Karen did? Learn more about this talented, remarkable person and where they draw their strength from. Featured on today's episode Salisha chats with Tony award winner, Karen Olivo. Karen tells about her take in an article where she said that being a domestic abuse survivor she is compelled to do something that it all just felt necessary for her to exist. What she's seeing right now is that the industry she's in needs her to be an activist. They also talked about what Karen will do if the entire Broadway community were not going back to work. Karen answered that she's going to have to get another kind of job but it's not going to be an acting job. Another question asked to Karen is her family upbringing because Salisha is fascinated by Karen's confidence. She said that she did a lot of reading and training where she mentioned a book which is the Psychology of Oppression, which she's trying to utilize these resources in real-time at all times. Karen shares that she tries to advocate for herself because when she doesn't she will leave the door open to be mistreated. So she's constantly trying to model standing up for herself because she knows that there's someone else who probably needs it. She's using her skillset to push over uncomfortability so that she can advocate for herself. Salisha takes the conversation to Karen being an educator where she's been on and off for close to 10 years where has taught at a couple of colleges. She started to rethink that she might do more in private coaching where she has a handful of students that she teach now. She usually tries to get her students to turn off all other stuff and really get quiet and think about what they know to be true. And then approach all of the work from what they know that will give them a little more competence rather than trying to adopt something that they've seen. So join Salisha and Karen as they discuss Karen's journey in standing up for the truth and coaching career that inspires a lot of her students to be more competent and unique in their own way. This week on the Best Supporting Aftershow it's Nick's turn to stump Colin in a game we like to call "Close, but no Oscar," highlighting the career of Glenn Close. In our BSA of the week segment, Nick raves about a life changing burger and just can't get enough of the Sunday Pancakes podcast featuring recent guest, Karen Olivo. Colin treats himself to a bit of self care in the form of a Snickers and tests the waters on the newest Jean Smart vehicle courtesy of HBO Max.
Eden Espinosa may have gotten her start singing nearly every Disney princess ballad for Disneyland park-goers, but that was just the beginning. She's now one of the best-known contemporary stage actresses in the world and has had lead roles in iconic shows including RENT and Wicked. On this week's episode of Why Here, hosts Benton and Tristan chat with Eden about her humble Orange County beginnings, her political and social activism, her Mexican American heritage and the admittedly comical recurring nightmares she has from playing a green witch. At the end, Tony award-winning actress and activist Karen Olivo joins the conversation to make sure Eden shared the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

AFECT was formed in June 2020 by Karen Olivo and Eden Espinosa on the heels of continued violence and injustice against Black, Indigenous People of Color. Conversations were started in response to the racism that is prevalent in the American theater and it came to light that prominent Broadway names had repeatedly contributed to political candidates and movements that directly contradict the ideals of many artists in the industry. Armed with this knowledge, Olivo and Espinosa vowed to withhold their artistic services from “any theatre, company, or persons who would knowingly fund organizations that perpetuate inequality”.

Last week Cara and Jessica had the honor of moderating a panel for Women’s Day on Broadway a celebration of female identifying people, who are working in - or are fans of - the Broadway, Off-Broadway and professional theater industry. Each event Women of Broadway hosts is meant to offer an opportunity to share experiences, struggles, and victories with the goal of supporting each other to make our industry stronger. This year, for the first time, the plight of the working mother was brought to the forefront, highlighting how this pandemic has disproportionately affected those who are trying to manage not only a career and parenthood, but the social reckoning that our nation and industry is undergoing. Our conversation was one of truth, both in pain and hope. In case you missed the event, here is our panel with Laura Benanti, Tanya Birl, Julia Jordan, Vanessa Javier and Karen Olivo. “This is a story about love” is how Arthur Laurents- writer and director of West Side Story- described the show to Karen Olivo who was cast as Anita. He went on to say “You fight because you love. The hate you feel is because you fear the thing you love will go.” On this episode of “ And The Tony Goes To…” Karen shares details about her complex and close relationship with director Arthur Laurents, with whom she connected deeply and Karen shares how she felt overwhelmed by the expectations of playing Anita- a triple threat role where one is meant to be a great dancer, singer and actress and she describes in detail how Arthur made sure that Karen felt supported in all those areas. To this day when she speaks of Arthur she gets emotional remembering what it was to work with him and how much he meant to her and of course- we talk about how her friend Lin Manuel Miranda was instrumental in her getting the role. The Friends sat down and recorded over Skype on June 8. They discuss the recent discovery that Broadway theater owners the Nederlanders gave over $150,000 to the 2016 Trump presidential campaign and why we should care. Plus, they talk about two theater productions that were filmed: Pass Over by Antoinette Nwandu (available on Amazon Prime) and American Son by Christopher Demos-Brown (available on Netflix). They compare and contrast police brutality as portrayed by a Black playwright versus a white playwright. Their guest this episode is Jasmine Batchelor, whose film The Surrogate is out for virtual release starting June 12. Batchelor discusses how the film opened her eyes to inequality for disabled people and what's it like for your mom to be played on screen by Tony winner Tonya Pinkins. The "Moulin Rouge!" star talks shaping Satine, 'In the Heights' anticipation and the felting on her to-do list.
Continuing our “Journey to Motherhood” series, star of Moulin Rouge and Tony Award winner, Karen Olivo shares with us how marrying into motherhood has been the greatest gift: how seeing herself through her children’s eyes has forced her to be kinder to herself, how listening to her gut has always guided her life in and out of the business, and how embodying the sparkling diamond every night shows the next generation that diversity can not be the exception but the rule. Karen Olivo is a Tony-Award winner who made her Broadway debut in Rent before going on to roles in Brooklyn, the Musical, In The Heights, and West Side Story (which is where she won her Tony!). She is now amazing audiences, critics, and everyone in between 8 times a week as Satine in Moulin Rouge the Musical. Karen was born in the South Bronx before moving to Central Florida. Although far from Broadway, performing was still in her family. Her dad was a director and mom worked lots of jobs in the theatre. After her dad started his own troupe, she found herself on stage at the age of 6, where she discovered a sense of power and belonging. The stage gave her balance and was a safe haven to escape the troubles of youth. After bouncing between a performing arts high school and "regular" high school, she found herself at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) -- but never graduated. She went to her first open call [for Rent]... and booked it. The rest, as they say, is history.
