EPISODE 76 - “MEMORABLE OSCAR SPEECHES OF THE GOLDEN ERA OF HOLLYWOOD” - 2/24/2025 Winning an Oscar is a dream for most people who work in Hollywood. But you can't just win the Oscar, you have to have a good speech once your name is called and you head to the podium. There have been some great ones — OLIVIA COLEMAN's funny and cheeky speech hit the right tone and who can forget JACK PALANCE's one-arm push-ups or CUBA GOODING's exuberance? There have also been some bad ones — don't we all still cringe a little at SALLY FIELDS' “You like me” speech? As we prepare to celebrate the 97th annual Academy Award ceremony, Steve and Nan look back on some of their favorite Oscar speeches and why they resonate. So put on your tux, don the gown and jewels, pop the champagne, and join us for a fun talk about … well, people talking. It's musicals month and Bob is at least tripling the amount of musicals he's watched in his lifetime on this month alone and today we go to that timeless tale of salt and garlic who truly have the ability to do wonders together if it wasn't for sausage and it's systemic authoritarianism making things too divided. I'm sure it's obvious that we're talking about the Jerome Robbins/Robert Wise/Stephen Sondheim/Leonard Bernstein joint from 1961 “WEST SIDE STORY” starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblin & Rita Moreno. The American take on “Romeo & Juliet” won Best Picture for that year and is the ground floor for many people's introduction to musicals. Jets, Sharks, fake Latinas, star-crossed lovers, tragedy and the most graceful gang warfare you ever saw. Everyone knows this story. Kyle, Joe, and Rick review the original 1961, West Side Story directed by Robert Wise. It stars Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, George Chakiris and Rita Moreno. We ranked 12 songs from the soundtrack, as well as picked our favorite lines, characters, performers, and scenes. Enjoy!
West Side Story's origins as a Tony award-winning stage musical based on Romeo and Juliet meant it was ripe for a film adaptation. Stage director and choreographer Jerome Robbins was set to co-direct with Oscar-winning director Robert Wise; it would be written for the screen by Ernest Lehman, retaining the beautiful score, songs and lyrics by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim.Wise would direct the dramatic scenes, and Robbins the musical sequences, in a lavish, expensive adaptation, shot on 70mm film. Robbins was a notorious perfectionist, often making the dancers vomit due to exhaustion and dehydration, injuries on set were rife, and his repeat takes meant the production ended up almost a month behind schedule. Those weren't the only issues, though; the actors playing Puerto Ricans were forced to wear brownface, and Natalie Wood, who played Maria, despised her co-star Richard Beymer, who played Tony. Robbins was unceremoniously fired from the production, but his contribution would lead to him receiving a co-director credit, and an Oscar win. West Side Story would win 10 out of the 11 Oscars it was nominated for, including Best Supporting Actress for Rita Moreno, the first Latina to win an Academy Award.Moreno would return to West Side Story sixty years later, as an executive producer on Steven Spielberg's new lavish adaptation of the original stage musical, as well as starring in a new role as Valentina. Gone were the brownface and white actors playing Puerto Ricans. A contemporary story from the early 60s about bigotry and xenophobia, patriotism and cultural divides would become a period piece about bigotry and xenophobia, patriotism and cultural divides, and a long-time passion project for Spielberg. Its release would be postponed by the Covid-19 pandemic, but while it would lead to a box office disappointment, it would also lead to the first Afro-Latina, and first queer woman of colour, to win an Academy Award; for the same role that Rita Moreno played sixty years prior... George Chakiris' reclusive reputation has made him highly sought for interviews. Now, as he prepare to release his memoirs, entitled "MY WEST SIDE STORY," he opens up about life in and out of the spotlight.Natalie Wood and “lovely” Richard Beymer, to the mercurial Jerome Robbins and “passionate” Rita Moreno, with whom Chakiris remains friends. “I know exactly where my gratitude belongs,” Chakiris writes, “and I still marvel at how, unbeknownst to me at the time, the joyful path of my life was paved one night in 1949 when Jerome Robbins sat Leonard Bernstein and Arthur Laurents down in his apartment and announced, 'I have an idea.'"Academy Award & Golden Globe winner, George Chakiris, is perhaps best known internationally for his role of Bernardo in West Side Story. In Nov of 2012, Chakiris received what many refer to as the highest honor in Hollywood - His Hand & Foot Prints were placed in cement for all history in connection with the 50th anniversary of classic film West Side Story which premiered at Grauman's over 50 years ago. George Chakiris was born in Norwood, Ohio. He is the son of Steven and Zoe Chakiris. They were immigrants from Greece. A graduate of the American School of Dance, Chakiris recalls the early days of passing the Grauman's Chinese Theatre, “where the worlds most glamorous people were seen,” never thinking that one day he would be attending his own premiere for “Westside Story” (For which he received a Golden Globe and an Academy AwardBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/night-dreams-talk-radio--2788432/support.
Episode 49: WEST SIDE STORY Could it be? Yes, it could. Something's coming, something good. You don't have to wait. Bernstein. Sondheim. Robbins/Wise. It could only be West Side Story, and we've got a podcast all about the 1961 film version. Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer star as star-crossed lovers, but it's Rita Moreno who steals the show as Anita. West Side Story won the Best Picture award, plus a ton of other bling at the Oscars (TM) for that year. It ranks #21 on our countdown.* Come back again next week. We've got our tracking devices set for the Coen brothers' No Country for Old Men. Spoiler Alert: We talk about the movie in its entirety, so if you haven't yet seen it, check it out. Or not. That ball is in your court. *What is this list? We explain it in more detail in our Trailer and its Description, but as a high-level answer: we aggregated several different lists that rank the ninety-four winners of the Best Picture Academy Award in a rough attempt to get a consensus. It is not intended to be rigorous or definitive. It's just a framework to guide our journey through cinema history.

I had the ridiculous honor of being able to speak with Richard Beymer- a Hollywood LEGEND (star of the original West Side Story, Ben Horne in Twin Peaks) who directed the focus of our discussion: The Innerview. Joining us was Jesse Pires, the Director of Lightbox Film Center at University of the Arts, and Ross Lipman who is an Archivist and Film Restorationist. We discuss Richard's impact on film, working on a film for more than five decades and how it adapts over time, and the modern cinematic audience compared to audiences of the past. I hope you enjoy this as I am still gobsmacked that I was able to have a conversation with Richard Beymer. - Mubi article on The Innerview at Rotterdam Film Festival: https://mubi.com/notebook/posts/let-it-take-over-outsider-art-at-international-film-festival-rotterdam Richard Beymer IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000937/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_4_nm_4_q_richard%2520beymer Lightbox Film Center Website: https://lightboxfilmcenter.org Ross Lipman Website: https://www.corpusfluxus.org/index.html Iowa PBS video on the Summer of Freedom: https://youtu.be/KlT6wkaPyWY - Follow Shelf Shock Rewind on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Shelf_Shock Follow Shelf Shock Rewind on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/shelfshockrewind/ Follow Shelf Shock Rewind on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ShelfShockRewind Follow Shelf Shock Rewind on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@shelfshockrewind1231 - Become a patron here: https://www.patreon.com/DiscConnected - Like the page and follow on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/TheDiscConnected - Join me on Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/thediscconnected/ - Or on Twitter: https://twitter.com/disc_connected - Email: DiscConnectedMedia@gmail.com -- Merch: https://www.teepublic.com/user/the-disc-connected - Podcast: https://thediscconnected.podbean.com - If you happen to be shopping on Amazon for something and would like to share some of Lord Bezos' profits with my channel at no additional cost to you, please consider shopping through my link: https://amzn.to/39mcX1t - Tip Jar: https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=TDEVSPJZ9EFCW or paypal.me/RVinls (friends and family only) or Amazon wish list: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/20CR2ZN456P1B?ref_=wl_share - Music is by Michael J. Kicking off our fifth season are the films of Robert Wise, arguably the most important director of the sixties – that is if you're going by box office profits. Despite the musical genre not being one he ever associated with before this decade, Wise almost single-handedly shaped the evolution of the Hollywood Musical. Previously known for his noirs and a few notable sci-fi and horror films, by the 1960s he became the director for two of the biggest movie musicals of all time. In this episode, Bart and Jenna cover these two Best Picture-winning films along with several other notable films that he made this decade – a couple of which are a highly prized by film lovers as his two mega-blockbusters. Though widely regarded as a gifted director with many beloved classics to his name, it's hard to put a finger on any distinct personality or trademarks he brings to his uniformly solid but varied films. Bart and Jenna attempt to pinpoint what, if anything, makes a film identifiably “Wisean” – a tought feat when you're trying to link up The Sound of Music with a depressingly realistic, toxic love and divorce drama. The following films are discussed:• West Side Story (1961) Directed by Robert Wise & Jerome Robbins Starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Rita Moreno• Two for the Seesaw (1962) Directed by Robert Wise Starring Robert Mitchum, Shirley MacLaine, Edmon Ryan• The Haunting (1963) Directed by Robert Wise Starring Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Russ Tamblyn• The Sound of Music (1965) Directed by Robert Wise Starring Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer, Eleanor Parker• The Sand Pebbles (1966) Directed by Robert Wise Starring Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, Mako• Star! (1968) Directed by Robert Wise Starring Julie Andrews, Richard Crenna, Michael Craig
West Side Story (1961) West Side Story is a 1961 American musical romantic drama film directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins. With a screenplay by Ernest Lehman, the film is an adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical of the same title, which in turn was inspired by Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. It stars Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, Rita Moreno, and George Chakiris, and was photographed by Daniel L. Fapp in Super Panavision 70. The music was composed by Leonard Bernstein, with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Released on October 18, 1961, through United Artists, the film received high praise from critics and viewers, and became the highest-grossing film of 1961. It was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won 10, including Best Picture (in addition to a special award for Robbins), becoming the record holder for the most wins for a musical. West Side Story (2021) West Side Story is a 2021 American musical romantic drama film directed and co-produced by Steven Spielberg from a screenplay by Tony Kushner. It is the second feature-length adaptation of the 1957 stage musical of the same name.It stars Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler in her film debut with Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, and Rita Moreno in supporting roles. Moreno, who starred in the 1961 film adaptation, also served as an executive producer alongside Kushner.[3] The film features music composed by Leonard Bernstein with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The film entered development in 2014 at 20th Century Fox; Kushner began writing the screenplay in 2017. In January 2018, Spielberg was hired and casting began that September. Justin Peck choreographed the dance sequences. Principal photography occurred in New York and New Jersey; filming began in July 2019 and ran for two months. In this first part of 2, it's an all out rumble on Fabulous Film and Friends, as we compare and contrast the two visions of the classic musical West Side Story—the 1961 version directed by Star Trek The Motion Picture's Robert Wise and the 2021 version directed by Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull's Steven Spielberg. The first version starred Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Rita Moreno, George Chakiris and Russ Tamblyn. And the update stars Ansel Elgort, Rachel Zegler, Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez and Mike Faist. I'm joined once again by my stalwart war council of movie watchers and deep thinkers, Roseanne Caputi, Burton Brown, Dr. David Johnson and Gordon Alex Robertson. Welcome one and all! If, for whatever reason, you've never heard of this story and what it's all about here's, a synopsis: West Side Story is a musical retelling of William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet set in late 1950's New York where in the stead of feuding Italian families it's warring ethnic gangs. The white gang call themselves the Jets and are led by Riff and Tony and a Puerto Rican gang called the Sharks led by Bernardo and Chino. Tony, however, while one of the founders of the Jets, is starting to grow up and grow past gang life and predicts something coming in the future to fulfill him. And lo and behold when he attends a dance where the Jets and Sharks are both in attendance, Tony falls slackjawed, awestruck, head over heels in love with Bernardo's younger sister Maria, who has just arrived in America. Maria, equally gobsmacked by Tony, dances with him and kisses him in front of her friends and family, which incites an all out rumble between the Jets and the Sharks. Instantly and deeply and love with each other, Tony and Maria commit to marrying each other but before they can have peace, Maria entreats Tony to stop the rumble. Tony promises he will but as the fight unfolds, Bernardo kills Riff, who is Tony's best friend and like a brother to him. Grief-stricken and angry, Tony retaliates and stabs Bernardo, killing him as well. Through plot machinations and misunderstandings similar to Romeo and Juliet, Tony and Maria's innocent and tender love is spoiled by the hatred of one group towards another and we leave the theater to ponder whether love can conquer all? Is that what's truly important as we battle over which version is better?Find out!

Ah, Paul Newman - arguably the biggest actor of the ‘60s. Who doesn't get lost in those dreamy blue eyes? But this episode isn't about him, really. It's about his better half, Joanne Woodward, who had twice his acting chops but, unfortunately, a quarter of his drawing power on the marquee. But you don't need to do the math to discover how great Joanne is after you watch all her ‘60s movies. Don't just take it from us, this episode was actually inspired by a listener's request for more Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward films. (Yeah, that's a thing you can do! No promises we'll always do it though.)In this episode, Bart and Jenna trace Joanne Woodward's films alongside that of her more famous husband and decide that hers are the ones they really wanted to talk about. From her impressive range that spans dramatic to comedic to New Hollywood genuine, she has a charm that cannot be denied. The following films are discussed:• From The Terrace (1960) Directed by Mark Robson Starring Joanne Woodward, Paul Newman, Ina Balin• Paris Blues (1961) Directed by Martin Ritt Starring Joanne Woodward, Paul Newman, Sidney Poitier• A New Kind of Love (1963) Directed by Melville Shavelson Starring Joanne Woodward, Paul Newman, Thelma Ritter• The Stripper (1963) Directed by Franklin J. When it was announced that Steven Spielberg was mounting a new film adaptation of the classic Broadway musical WEST SIDE STORY, it was entirely reasonable to ask, "Why?" Why a new film adaptation and why Spielberg. The 1961 "West Side," directed by Robert Wise, was a Best Picture-winner and is regarded as one of the great movie musicals of all time. Also? Spielberg has never directed a musical. And yet, as revered as that 1961 adaptation is, it is not without its faults, notably the casting of white actors as Latinx characters and a pair of romantic leads (Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer) who don't sing and are arguably the weakest members of an otherwise ace cast. Adam and Josh make the case that with his thrilling new adaptation, Spielberg more than answers the why, without necessarily fixing all of the earlier film's weaknesses. Plus, a review of Sean Baker's latest, RED ROCKET, which has Simon Rex's former adult film star making an ignominious return to his Texas hometown. 0:00 - Billboard 1:06 - Review: "West Side Story" "Cool" ("West Side Story," Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) 41:44 - Next Week / Notes 47:22 - Polls 57:02 - Review: "Red Rocket" 1:14:36 - Outro Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film. In this episode, we're talking about 1961's West Side Story, which was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won ten, making it still the all-time most successful musical at the Oscars. Based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins and with a score by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a screenplay by Ernest Lehman, this was the highest grossing film of 1961 and pretty much changed the face of movie musicals forever. The Hollywood Reporter said ‘It is so good that superlatives are superfluous. Let it be noted that the film musical, the one dramatic form that is purely American and purely Hollywood, has never been done better”. Tonight we'll be heading to the roof with Bernardo, played by George Chakiris and Anita, played by Rita Moreno. And along the way we'll stop off at the bridal shop with Tony, played by Richard Beymer and Maria, played by Natalie Wood. Are these relationships wild and bright or are they going mad, shooting stars into space? Well, thank you, Diane Keaton! The consensus is that despite some serious problems, we are nevertheless back in true Twin Peaks with Season 2, Episode 15, “Slaves and Masters.” This week, Colin frames the good, but not perfect, return to form with a bit called NailedIt/FailedIt; Damon examines how Keaton's directing brings us back to a “Lynchian” mode; Jennifer spotlights victim-villains, especially Evelyn and Josie; and Jonathan takes on Ben Horne, racist content, and minorities in the show. For the Twist, we go on an art walk in our favorite small town.LISTEN: Apple Podcasts | Google Podcasts | BuzzSprout | Spotify | RSS | and more!S2, E15 NOTES:Harley Peyton (episode writer) Diane Keaton (episode director and American actor, b. 1946) Vicuña wool (wool from a vicuña… go figure)The Queen's Gambit (2020, Netflix miniseries) Ed Asner (1929-2021, legendary American actor and activist)Reflections: An Oral History of Twin Peaks (2014, book, by Brad Dukes)Time After Time (1979, film dir. and written by Nicholas Meyer) David Warner (b. 1941, English actor)Shakuhachi flute (traditional Japanese and Chinese instrument)Richard Beymer (b. 1938, Benjamin Horne) Red Rock West (1993, neo-noir film dir. by John Dahl) JT Walsh (1943-1998, prolific American actor) West Side Story (1961, film, dir. by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins) Jonathan's article on Catherine CoulsonPatton: Lust for Glory (1970, film dir. by Franklin J. Du rythme, du swing éternel, un film musical, une référence absolue: cʹest "West Side Story", de Robert Wise et Jerome Robbins, sorti en 1961. Now, as he prepare to release his memoirs, entitled "MY WEST SIDE STORY," he opens up about life in and out of the spotlight. Natalie Wood and “lovely” Richard Beymer, to the mercurial Jerome Robbins and “passionate” Rita Moreno, with whom Chakiris remains friends. “I know exactly where my gratitude belongs,” Chakiris writes, “and I still marvel at how, unbeknownst to me at the time, the joyful path of my life was paved one night in 1949 when Jerome Robbins sat Leonard Bernstein and Arthur Laurents down in his apartment and announced, 'I have an idea.'" In 1947, Chakiris made his film debut in the chorus of Song of Love. He was one of the dancers in Marilyn Monroe's “Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend” number in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes released in 1953. He again appeared as a dancer alongside Rosemary Clooney in “White Christmas” in “Love, You Didn't Do Right by Me.” In 1961, George's biggest success came with the film West Side Story, for which he won the Golden Globe and the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Bernardo, leader of the Sharks. He had also appeared as Riff, leader of the Jets, in the West End in London.
In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite TV shows: the American mystery/horror/drama television series "Twin Peaks" created by Mark Frost and David Lynch. Premiering on April 8, 1990, and running for two seasons before being cancelled, the series follows FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper (played by Kyle MacLachlan) as he investigates the murder of homecoming Queen Laura Palmer (played by Sheryl Lee) in the fictional town of Twin Peaks, Washington. However, as a result of his investigation into the murder of Laura Palmer, FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper also reveals and realises that there is more to the town of Twin Peaks than meets the eye - especially after he uncovers that the town is also a gateway to supernatural "lodges" of reality where supernatural and extradimensional entities live and exist, who have been observing, inhabiting, and influencing the people of Twin Peaks to do things that they would not ordinarily do for years. The series has a unique mixture of many elements that run through it - including supernatural events, melodrama, surrealism, off-beat humour, eccentric characters, and distinctive cinematography - that all combine to make the series so iconic and incomparable to any other series or film. The series is superbly written, produced, and directed - and its soundtrack, composed by Angelo Badalamenti, is also unlike that of any other TV series and is considered one of the most beloved and recognisable TV scores ever made. The series also has a phenomenonal cast of actors, including: Michael Ontkean, Mädchen Amick, Dana Ashbrook, Richard Beymer, Lara Flynn Boyle, Sherilyn Fenn, Warren Frost, Peggy Lipton, James Marshall, Everett McGill, Jack Nance, Ray Wise, Harry Goaz, and many other recurring cast members who play instantly recognisable and memorable characters that all combine to make the series one of the greatest TV shows of all time - which has a devoted cult following of fans from all around the world. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message
Book Vs Movie: “West Side Story” Vs "Romeo and Juliet" The Shakespeare Classic & the 1961 Musical Which Swept the Academy Awards “March Musicals!” Oh, Book Vs Movie fans--where art thou? The Margos are kickin' it with “Musicals in March” and for this episode, we decided to use one of the most adapted Shakespeare tales (which is really saying something!) and match it with one of the most ambitious films of the early 1960s. William Shakespeare uses poetry, metaphors, comedy, tragedy, and a story about doomed young lovers which has entranced (or annoyed) audiences and high school students who had “Romeo & Juliet” on their reading curriculum for decades now. Originally published in the 1590s, there have been several direct adaptations for stage and screen. Romeo & Juliet are teens in love who are thwarted by the prejudice of their feuding clans and are a symbol for starcrossed lovers who are fated to be together. It's not the feel-good hit of the summer--but it is beautiful and it's hard not to feel something when ultimately their love has them make desperate choices (spoiler!) In the 1950s, Arthur Laurents wrote the book for the musical West Side Story which had Jermone Robbins create the choreography and the music in part by future songwriting superstar Stephen Sondheim. It became a smash on Broadway in 1957 and there have been several revivals since. Oh, and Leonard Bernstein's score is one of his best. The setting is now in late 1950s New York City where two different gangs The Jets (who are caucasian) and The Sharks (who are Puerto Rican) fight over their “turf.” Former Jet Tony falls in love with Maria whose brother is the leader of The Sharks. The movie stars Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, and Rita Moreno. The vocals for Wood are once again provided by Marni Nixon (we talked about her when we discussed My Fair Lady previously. Rebinging Star Trek DS9: The Homecoming We are back! And it's time for Season 2 episode 1: The Homecoming! We finished season 1 on a high note with 3 good episodes in a row; so how does season 1 start? Well it starts with the first of a 3-parter and some high-octane guest stars. We meet Minister Jaro played by Tony award winning actor Frank Langella and also Li Nalas played by Golden Globe nominated actor Richard Beymer. And we also get a name for the cafeteria: it's the replimat (this seems like a critical development). Just whose homecoming is it? In this episode, Kira and Miles are on a secret mission to rescue a Bajoran prisoner of war named Li Nalas. Li is revered as a war hero on Bajor and when Kira finds out he's still alive she feels he's the only one who can unite a fractured Bajor. Sisko agrees and this 3-part story is underway. On this episode, we discuss the thirty-fourth Best Picture Winner: “WEST SIDE STORY.”"West Side Story" is set in an Upper West Side blue-collar neighborhood in New York City in the mid 1950s. The musical explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The members of the Sharks, from Puerto Rico, are taunted by the Jets, a white gang. The young protagonist, Tony (a former member of the Jets and best friend of the gang's leader, Riff) falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks. Directed by Jerome Robbins & Robert Wise, the film stars Natalie Wood as Maria, Richard Beymer as Tony, Russ Tamblyn as Riff, Rita Moreno as Anita, and George Chakiris as Bernardo. Here on The Envelope, we discuss & review every Best Picture Winner in the Academy Awards History. We are a Cinema Squad Production, presented on the Cinema Squad Podcast Channel. You can reach anyone here at TheCinemaSquad.com – Just go there to email us, check our bios, and keep up with the latest episode.
So in this latest episode, we discuss S1E1′s “The Skill to Catch a Killer,” which, as we mention, aired on 04/19/90, was directed by David Lynch, and worsen by Lynch and Mark Frost. It was watched by 19.2 million ABC viewers, down 4 million from the previous episode, so the show was continuing to lose viewers not ready for what it was offering. Although we mention having done our research this time, we didn't note that Jerry Horne is played by character actor David Patrick Kelly, a steadily working actor since the late ‘70s who nonetheless is hard to recognize if you're looking for someone who looks like spiky-haired Jerry. Kelly has appeared in a number of popular or cult classic series and films including The Warriors, Tales from the Darkside, Commando, Moonlighting, Miami Vice, on up to Bored to Death, The Blacklist, John Wick, and Spike Lee's just-completed Chi-Raq. He also acted in Lynch's Wild at Heart. We might as well mention brother Ben, too, played by Richard Beymer, a North Hollywood High graduate who acted extensively in TV in the ‘50s until getting into films with The Diary of Anne Frank, playing Anne's pencil (sorry, just seeing if you're paying attention), and then one of his most well-known roles, Tony in West Side Story (also with future Peaks castmate Russ Tamblyn). Unlike his libidinous Ben Horne, the ‘60s films, Bachelor Flat and Five Finger Exercise, are apparently not very dirty. Screen work was sporadic in the late ‘60s through early ‘80s (perhaps more theatre?), but Moonlighting, Paper Dolls and Dallas got him back into the swing of things, leading to Twin Peaks, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and a surprising number of episodes of Murder, She Wrote, playing different characters (he has that look of a murdering weasel who's going to be found out by a doddering old novelist, right?). Scott erroneously calls The Great Northern “The North Woods Inn.” It just happens once. Chris-Craft is indeed famous for its mahogany-hulled motorboats. The model in this episode is considered a classic and was popular from the ‘40s into the ‘60s, i.e. the era most influential on David Lynch. Despite at least one bankruptcy and many changes in ownership, the company is still going. And how about that Nadine Hurley, the one-eyed, super-strong, quiet-drape-runner-obsessed wife of Big Ed? She is played by Wendy Robie, who has acted largely in television and often as someone at least quirky, often mentally disturbed. Aside from Twin Peaks, she may be best known for The People Under the Stairs, a decent Wes Craven film, or Vampire in Brooklyn, a not-decent Wes Craven film. She is also apparently in the 2000 Baz Luhrmann film, Romeo + Juliet. “You'd be looking for your teeth on Queer Street” - we speculate on this, but Wikipedia indicates it's an old expression referring to someone ending up in trouble, often in the financial sense. It is associated with Clarey Street in London, where the bankruptcy courts were located. Chris isn't sure if Grace Zabriskie, who plays Sarah Palmer, is still alive. She is, and was excellent in the most recent season of Showtime's Ray Donovan as Miss Minassian, matriarch of an Armenian crime family. More on her in a later post. Scott believes the One Armed Man's dialogue in this episode holds the key to the mysteries of this series. We'll see! Welcome to Twin Peaks has the text of Mike's speech, all the Log Lady intros, and plenty of theorizing. The One Armed Man, Mike, is played by Al Strobel, who has a few other credits besides this and TP:FWWM. His role was expanded because of his impressive performance as Mike. The Man from Another Place is portrayed by Michael J. Anderson, who used a phonetically reversed speaking style he and his friends developed in school, so it was not a Lynch or Frost idea. He has also been seen in the HBO series, Carnivale, as well as Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me and (as a normal-sized man with the use of a prosthetic body) in Mulholland Dr. “That Gum You Like Is Back in Style” is a track from Northern California rock band Camper Van Beethoven's 2002 concept album, New Roman Times. Cowritten by David Lowery and Johnny Hickman, who are also in the band, Cracker, it should probably have been a Cracker song, but Lowery felt it fit CVB better, and though it predated the New Roman Times concept, it fit in fine. By Lowery's admission, the lyrics aren't particularly meaningful and are just intended to create a weird, Lynchian mood. Thanks for listening.
