In the podcast episode featuring tattoo artist and painter Senju, a fascinating narrative unfolds about the interconnectedness of tattooing and painting, particularly within the context of Japanese art. Senju's journey illustrates how these two forms of expression can influence and inspire one another, creating a cyclical relationship that enriches the artist's work. Senju's story begins with his initial foray into tattooing, which he describes as a pivotal moment in his life. Growing up in the punk scene in Sweden, he was initially drawn to tattooing through friends who had tattoos. His first experience with a tattoo—a simple abstract eye—sparked a realization of the permanence and beauty of body art. This moment marked the beginning of his journey into the world of tattooing, which he pursued passionately for over three decades. Senju's journey from tattooing to painting and back again illustrates the interconnectedness of different art forms. His story highlights the importance of cultural exploration and the willingness to adapt and evolve as an artist. By embracing both tattooing and painting, and utilizing modern digital tools, Senju not only honors the rich traditions of Japanese art but also paves the way for future generations of artists to explore the boundaries of creativity. Tune in for an inspiring exploration of art, creativity, and the interconnectedness of different mediums. "They adapted to a more Christian way of viewing sexuality in the human body, and this has kind of dragged on into the common, to now, you know, contemporary times." "Yes, this is more, maybe more, seems nicer than ordinary S&M." "You're 100% in the now. There is only right now happening." "We are the outliers. We are the outcasts, supposedly. We're the ones that were, I thought, saying to each other, do whatever you want. Live a happy life. And now we're turning on each other?"  "In our minds, change is a tiger coming, you know?" Shibari is Japanese rope bondage, a form of BDSM. The word broadly means "binding" or "tying." It originated from Hojo-jutsu, a torturous method of restraining captives, before morphing into the erotic bondage Kinbaku in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Marika shares her personal journey with Shibari, and we get into the origins and how it relates to Western BSDM practices, how you can practice by yourself with self-tying or solo tying, the benefits, including mindfulness and meditation, the nuances in terminology between rigger vs. rope top and rope model vs. rope bottom, misconceptions about the power dynamics, the difference between power and control, and so much more. RopuNawa first encountered Shibari and Kinbaku in 2008 at a performance in Australia with Arisue Go. This experience stayed with him, and he began his own journey with rope back in his home of Switzerland, first learning Osada Steve's style with local teachers. Rather than stay with one style, however, he has been inspired by many, as he feels that there is not one way to tie - rather, the heart of his style lies in the needs of his model. Through the diversity within his approach, he can best respond to his partner's needs and wants, focusing and appreciating the non-verbal connection that he creates with each tying partner. He currently teaches fulltime in his Studio in Basel (Switzerland), while travelling and teaching internationally with his muse @FreyaHellesdim. Fox has had an interest in Ropeunawa's online classes for a while, and the podcast team were pleased to be able to talk to him about: ◦ His early inspirations from rope-related Manga and Hentai ◦ How he balances his desire to please his bottoms with his own needs and desires as a top ◦ The way in which becoming a full time rope teacher affected his feelings about rope ◦ Visiting Japan for rope connections and education ◦ Some of his thoughts on the Japanese rope scene ◦ The joys and challenges of travelling to different countries for rope ◦ How the Swiss rope scene tries to stay healthy ◦ Ways to create healthier rope communities from his experience ◦ Whether rope is s3x work for him or not ◦ The benefits of his adaptive rope style ◦ And as ever, so much more!

Edward Willey talks about his seemingly two separate interests and pursuits – rope play and self-leadership – and his ingenious idea of combining them together to develop and practice. How do rope play and self-leadership intersect? How it started Prompted by his partner's brilliant idea, Edward Willey started to introduce some movements and meditation practices he used in self-leadership training into his rope play sessions. He quickly realized that people started to learn rope tying techniques but, more importantly, the connection between partners greatly increased. Since then, each session became more about how to stay deeply connected to the partner and less about the technical side of learning how to do each fancy knot. “The knot that binds together” In rope plays, there are two Japanese terms often used: “Shibari,” which means to tie; and “Kinbaku,” which means “to bind tightly.” But more importantly, the word “Misubi,” which means “the knot that binds together” or the thread that ties all of creations together. The true focus of rope play is on the connection that happens between you and your partner, allowing true intimacy and connection to develop. Before getting caught up with the techniques of rope tying, create a foundation of relaxation and confidence with your partner. Make the experience between you and the partner as opposed to you and the rope. How does exploring rope play and leadership make you a better leader and lover? Being able to stay present and relaxed and confident can make your partner feel a lot safer in the bedroom, and it can develop intimacy and more trust between the two of you. If they feel safer, more respected, and more heard, they are more likely to follow the guidance you're bringing. The same thing applies to leadership. If you can approach your leadership with a relaxed body that's strong, vibrant, and healthy, with an open heart that's full of love and connection, people will naturally follow you. The rope is just a tool to develop deep connection and intimacy in order to create a container of safety for your partner. Is self-leadership different when you're the one being bound? The person trying has more responsibility to take care of the safety of the other, but the person being tied up also has responsibility to be able to speak up if something doesn't feel right or have questions or concerns. It's a co-creation and it's important to speak up. To be able to relax your body is also very important because being tied up can bring up fear and vulnerability. Keeping the mind calm for when it starts to spin up and feel panicky is the same training you give in self-leadership. (Christina - Shibari)   In this episode, I had the honour to have Christina as my guest. She shared with me her interest in shibari as her hobby.   Definition: Kinbaku (緊縛) means "tight binding," while Kinbaku-bi (緊縛美) literally means "the beauty of tight binding." Kinbaku is a Japanese style of bondage or BDSM which involves tying a person up using simple yet visually intricate patterns, usually with several pieces of thin rope (often jute, hemp or linen and generally around 6 mm (0.24 in) in diameter, but sometimes as small as 4 mm (0.16 in), and between 7–8 m (23–26 ft) long. In Japanese, this natural-fibre rope is known as asanawa (麻縄); the Japanese vocabulary does not make a distinction between hemp and jute. The allusion is to the use of hemp rope for restraining prisoners, as a symbol of power, in the same way that stocks or manacles are used in a Western BDSM context. The word shibari came into common use in the West at some point in the 1990s to describe the bondage art Kinbaku. Shibari (縛り) is a Japanese word that broadly means "binding" or "tying" in most contexts, but is used in BDSM to refer to this style of decorative bondage. Wikipedia contributors. (2021, June 18). The models he used from a French dance school in order to make that sculpture impressed him hugely and, he says, gave him a lifetime of inspiration, adding that he felt he was surrounded by walking sculptures. For a recent show Emmanuel made a triptych of Exaltation – one carved in white marble, another cast in polished white bronze, and the third in natural bronze with a patina. He explains how he wanted to illustrate how the same subject feels completely different when created in a different material.Emmanuel displays his extraordinary carving skills in his portrayals of Kinbaku – the Japanese art of tying rope around a person using visually intricate patterns, typically with several pieces of thin rope (often jute, hemp or linen). He believes the practice is empowering because the people are not tied in their mind, in fact they are very free. While Emmanuel was carving in white, bianco p and statuario marble, some of his black women friends asked why he didn’t sculpt black women. He says, ‘I felt like, well, I’m not going to sculpt a black woman in white marble. It kind of doesn’t make sense because part of their beauty is their colour. I mean, it’s not a colour, but it’s being black. So I went to a quarry in Belgium and purchased some beautiful black marble blocks. And it’s really an homage to them. And I hope they’re happy, but I think a lot of them, they express their contentment.’Emmanuel describes how he was affected by the fires in California and the south of France. He admires the resilience of nature whereby a forest is reborn afterwards, growing back twice as beautiful. It was then that he started to make pieces with burnt wood.Emmanuel comes from a family with a famous painter, Jean Cousin the Elder. Cousin was a Renaissance painter who painted Eva prima Pandora in 1500, which is in the Louvre, Paris.Emmanuel and I met at Massimo Galleni Studios, who specialise in reproducing classical sculptures, just outside Pietrasanta. He also referred to Mario Tavarelli who showed Emmanuel around when he first arrived in Carrara in 1995. Mario was the owner of a marble company and had guided the novelist Irving Stone during his research for his book on Michelangelo, The Agony and the Ecstasy.emmanuelfillion.cominstagram.com/fillionsculptures

For the 51st episode of Private Parts Unknown, your hosts Courtney Kocak & Sofiya Alexandra welcome Marika Leila Roux, a Berlin-based Shibari practitioner & the co-founder of Shibari Study, the leader in online rope education. Shibari is Japanese rope bondage, a form of BDSM. The word broadly means "binding" or "tying." It originated from Hojo-jutsu, a torturous method of restraining captives, before morphing into the erotic bondage Kinbaku in the late 19th & early 20th centuries. We get into the origins of Shibari, the common misconception that it's an ancient Japanese art, how it relates to Western BSDM practices, self-tying or solo tying, being combined with mindfulness & meditation, the nuances in terminology between rigger vs. rope top & rope model vs. rope bottom, dominant & submissive power dynamics, plus the difference between power & control & so much more. Originally Shibari was a form of imprisonment for prisoners, later on was used on Geishas for punishment, the form of art was recored in history in many ukiyoe art works. After WWII, the art of bondage had been perfected and applied in many areas such as dynamic living sculpture, expression of power exchange, and intimate, erotic restrains. Overtime, Shibari becomes a conversational art with beauty and aesthetics, the ropes and knots carry intense messages making it a deeper expression beyond visual. It is often performed with ritual experiences, as well as to delineate sacred spaces and times.Araki Nobuyoshi - the controversial Japanese photographer - brought Shibari to a wider public and mass culture with his erotic artworks (photographs of women in bondage).

Red & Blue bicker a bit over bondage and Bacon. Red guides us through a high-level view of Bondage 101 while Blue interrupts by being generally not so funny and in kind of a bad mood. Get tied up in one of their shortest episodes yet, no promises that it'll leave any marks.
