In this special bonus episode of "https://www.workshouldntsuck.co/white-men-journey (White Men & the Journey Towards Anti-Racism)," Tim talks with Noah Becker, Kevin Eppler, Colin Lacey, and Shannon Mudd, four members of a peer support circle that's part of the larger racial affinity group White Men for Racial Justice (WMRJ). This group of guys meet regularly to support, challenge, and hold each other accountable as they seek to live into their values and desire to help co-create an anti-racist, equitable, and just world. After nearly two years of meeting weekly on Zoom, they finally had the opportunity to meet in 3D in Richmond, Virginia for a weekend of immersive learning and community building with 40 other members of WMRJ. This discussion occurs the week after that gathering. This series was created to be a resource for white men who might be wrestling with questions like, “What's my role in anti-racism, equity, inclusion, and justice work as a white man with power and privilege?” and “How might my personal commitment to do this work manifest itself in the organization I help lead?” Are you new to the series? RSVP: bit.ly/AAPFcovid11 ~~ On September 5, 2015, India Kager and Angelo Perry drove to Virginia Beach to introduce their 4-month-old baby Roman, to Angelo’s family. Unbeknownst to them, Virginia Beach police were tailing their car and while India, Angelo, and Roman were parked at 7/11, a SWAT team threw a flash bang grenade and opened fire on their car. 4 officers fired over 51 rifle rounds into India’s car, while baby Roman sat in the back seat, killing Angelo and India within seconds. Virginia Beach police Chief Jim Cervera would later say India’s killing was an accident.  In this episode of Intersectionality Matters!host Kimberlé Crenshaw speaks with India Kager’s mother, Gina Best, about her memories of India, a “beautiful, soft-spoken poet.” She describes the anguish of never hearing from the police except to receive a bill for the destruction of the car her daughter was murdered in. While she waited for a call that would never come, officers pulled her daughter’s body out of the car and left it on the cold ground overnight. As India’s family desperately sought out information on his whereabouts, police handed India’s baby, Roman, over to foster parents. Shauna VanBogart here, breaking plans and our scheduled podcast to speak very briefly to whats on my heart and certainly what’s more relevant this week. And to give you a piece of homework instead.Just Being podcast speaks in depth about self-healing — addressing your wounds, your inner pains, your emotions. I consider this self-work some of the most important work in the world and I feel privileged to play a role in it. But being a part of and witnessing an individual heal is not at the core of why I do this work. It is because I know what this kind of self-evolution does on a familial, generational, community and global-level. When you do this work, as hard and painful as it is to look at it and deal with it, what you’re actually doing in this process is increasing your capacity to love. When you connect to your inner child who was wounded, hurt and victimized, you are not just healing — you are quite literally expanding your field of compassion and your ability to empathize. This is actually what I do — not just help them overcome roadblocks but to assist people in becoming brighter and stronger conduits of love, because in doing so, it has an immediate and profound effect on the progression of society as a whole. When a client heals an internal wound, just loving and receiving love becomes easier. They don’t have to effort their way to self-care or trip up on setting boundaries or acting courageously, they organically just step into a place of empowerment. But the higher purpose AND payoff to you doing self-work is that it provides you with the stamina and strength to serve. To take action from a place of love not fear. But you don’t need to wait to heal yourself to expand your forcefield of love and empowerment so you can serve. This channel opens when we connect to any wound, including the wounds outside of us. It’s the being willing to go there, to hold space for, to engage that cultivates an expansion of love, and thus emotional intelligence and fortitude within ourselves. What you are seeing this week are many opportunities to expand your forcefield— our nations and our people’s wounds are playing out for us - quite loudly - calling for our engagement. Racism has always been there. It’s been loud and in our faces before — many many times —  and it’s been far too easy to turn away, to judge it, or to say or think, “What can I possibly do - this is so big ..” Or “It doesn’t involve me, why get involved?” Or even “I’m not a black person so how could I possibly understand or help?” When you choose to connect to the wounds of others - not through the filter of judgement, fear, or ego; when you stop and look, listen, engage and refuse to turn away, no matter how painful it may feel or as uncomfortable as it is … what you’re doing in that moment is committing to being a part of the solution our country so desperately needs by becoming a conduit of love. To use the luxury of your privilege to champion for your fellow brothers and sisters who have been discriminated and oppressed for centuries — not because it’s just the right thing to do but because you KNOW in your soul, in your heart, that living a life of freedom only means something if they can participate with you.So instead of listening to my episode this week, I want to turn your attention instead to three incredible podcasts from black voices who speak to the systematic racism that still exists in our country. And if you don’t think this small and effortless action on your part does not make a difference, please listen to what I’m saying here — when you connect with these voices, attune, and use the tool of your listening ear to hear the stories and the voices behind them - to find empathy in the wounds of your community and these citizens in it … consider it an act of necessary self-expansion. I know you want to help - consider attuning to these voices as your homework so you can have the stamina for your actions. Build up your forcefield of love through the connection and empathy you will feel when you listen. lBecause love is the most powerful resource in this world - a force more powerful than hate that leads to profound movement and action that is not just seemingly obligatory but whole-heartedly necessary. Be a student of these voices, it will make you strong. It will make you courageous. It ill make you discerning. So that you can continue to take whatever action you feel compelled to take from the motivation of love, not fear.  Here are my three podcast recommendations:Intersectionality Matters! - Hosted by Kimberlé Crenshaw, an American civil rights advocate and a leading scholar of critical race theory. (LINK: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/intersectionality-matters/id1441348908)- I specifically recommend the episode “A Mother’s Nightmare: The Life & Death of Korryn Gaines” for its intimate look at fear and the story of a 23-year-old black woman who was killed in her own home by police in 2016.1619 - A profound, historical work of art by the New York Times hosted by Nikole Hannah-Jones (LINK: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/1619/id1476928106).  - This entire series, five episodes in length, is incredible. Code Switch - Fearless conversations about race, hosted by journalists of color, tackling the subject of race head-on and produced by NPR. (LINK: https://www.npr.org/podcasts/510312/codeswitch)  - Their most recent episode titled, “A Decade Of Watching Black People Die” hosted by and Shereen Marisol Meraji and Gene Demby is especially powerful.  We all have work to do. Jesi discusses the undocumented violence on Black mothers throughout history and the trauma it has left not only in this country but for black and brown mothers everywhere. They further discuss the fears for their own safety in public spaces and more. While these topics are difficult and uncomfortable, it is important to bring stories like this to the forefront.    ___   This podcast is presented by Brick By Brick Studios (IG: @brickbybrickstudios) and sponsored in part by Dylan Underwear (IG: @dylan_underwear). "The Wire" is often seen as a show showing the gritty side of police work. But in light of questions raised by the Black Lives Matter movement, does the shows depictions of police corruption and gender politics go deep enough? This episode goes deep on the real corruption in the BPD and the depth of gender violence of policing, focusing on the story of Korryn Gaines, a Black woman and self-proclaimed "sovereign citizen" killed by Baltimore County police in 2016. We close with an interview with Sonja Sohn, the actress who played Detective Kima Greggs in The Wire, to unpack the shows complicated legacy. Support the show (http://www.newtimbuktu.com)

This week, we feature two segments on the show: an interview with a Russian anarchist about the recent ramping up of torture and repression by the FSB in Russia against anarchists and anti-fascists  (00:14:13); and a chat with Patrick Strickland, author of "Alerta! Alerta!: Snapshots of Europe's Anti-Fascist Struggle” (00:34:17); plus anarchist prisoner Sean Swain on his bid to "Build The Wall" (00:08:27) FSB Torture of Radicals First up, Bursts spoke with Tania, a Russian anarchist, a member of the crew who runs the RUpression website documenting Russian state agencies like the FSB's use of torture to extract stories to build conspiracies to legitimize their tightening of restrictions on public gatherings, chill the political and media landscape, and sustain a state of sense of fear among the populace. We discuss the death of Mikhail Zhlobitsky in a bombing of an FSB office in October, the current state of anarchist organizing in Russia, and the past political repression since 2012 and the cases in Pensa and the 2017 "The Network" conspiracy case (which we've spoken of in this show in the past here and here). In February 2019, a situation unfolded where Azat Miftakhov disappeared, came back tortured, and accused of taking part in an anarchist terrorist plot. Azat was released by court order only to be re-arrested by another police agency (well documented in this crimethInc article, alongside some downloadable posters for pasting around your town). You can learn more about the case by reading and following rupression.com Patrick Strickland on European Anti-Fascism Secondly, William had the chance to interview Patrick Strickland, who is a journalist and author, about his recently released book "Alerta! Alerta! Snapshots of Europe's Anti-Fascist Struggle". This book follows the stories and lives of 5 European people who do broadly defined antifascist work or struggle. For this interview we talk about Strickland's journalism, the experiences of compiling this book, and about understanding elements on the far right that might enhance antifascism, in the so called US, Europe, and elsewhere. If you are in Charlotte NC tomorrow, Monday the 11th, consider showing up to support Rayquan Borum, who is a Black activist arrested during the Charlotte Uprising, a days long protest to mourn and rage against the police murder of Keith Lamont Scott in 2016. From charlotteuprising.com/statement : "The uprising in Charlotte is a direct response to sustained police and vigilante violence against Black people in this city and across the country: Keith Lamont Scott, Jonathan Ferrell, Aiyana Stanley, Jones, Tyre King, Korryn Gaines, Janisha Fonville, Terence Crutcher and so many more. These are names of victims we know and deeply mourn, understanding there are so many other people who have been unnecessarily taken from us." The arrest of Rayquan Borum was a direct attempt by police to frame Mr. Borum, and he is finally going to trial after 2 years being held in and out of solitary confinement. The trial will be held starts February 11th, and will start at 9:30am in room 5370 at the address 832 East Fourth Street Charlotte, NC, which is the Mecklenburg County Courthouse. On August 1, 2016, Baltimore County police arrived at the Randallstown, Maryland apartment of 23-year-old Korryn Gaines to serve a warrant alleging that she had failed to appear in court. Gaines, who had miscarried twins as a consequence of improper treatment while being held in connection with a traffic stop, had received paperwork for the stop that did not provide the date on which she was expected to appear. A month prior to the day officers descended on her home, Gaines had visited the police station seeking clarification about her court date, only to be told that the officer who had issued the paperwork was unavailable. When Gaines noticed police attempting to force entry that day in August, she sat down in her living room with a legally owned firearm, and a 6-hour standoff ensued. Gaines had amassed a sizable online following via her activism and poetry, and narrated the sequence in real time on Facebook Live until the social media portal shut her page down per police request. During the 6-hour standoff, Gaines relocated to her kitchen, at which point Officer Royce Ruby, Jr. fired at Gaines from outside her apartment. Officer Ruby then entered the apartment and shot Gaines three more times. One of the bullets passed through Gaines and wounded her young son, who survived but sustained lifelong disabling injuries. County prosecutors concluded that the killing of Gaines was justified, and Officer Ruby was not criminally charged. Pundits and critics have foregrounded Korryn’s possible mental impairment, her gun ownership, and her ideology as reasons to paper over the possible intersectional vulnerabilities that contributed to Korryn’s killing. In this riveting and morally urgent episode of Intersectionality Matters!, host Kimberlé Crenshaw sits down with Rhanda Dormeus, Korryn’s mother, to reveal the untold story of Gaines’ death, the blatant miscarriages of justice that led to it, and the harrowing consequences of Officer Ruby’s authorization to take the life of a mother in her own home. Dormeus’s story plumbs the very depths of unfathomable grief and raises deeply disturbing questions about whether the sanctity accorded to most human life is withheld from Black women and their families. Dormeus has reaped some positivity from tragic topsoil by becoming a leading voice in the Say Her Name movement, a campaign to shine light on Black women who are the underreported victims of police violence. Intersectionality Matters! is recorded and produced by Julia Sharpe-Levine. This episode was edited by Julia Sharpe-Levine and Alex Schein and recorded by Stacia Brown, Rebecca Scheckman, and Julia Sharpe-Levine, with consulting help from Thea Chaloner. Greetings 9MIND Sacred Sisterhood Tribe and Family. Peace, protection, prosperity and most of all wisdom be upon we all and those we love. Tonight I want to address the ongoing war between the SONS of darkness and the SONS of lite. And I also want to weigh in on the Korryn Gains death by Cop conversation and why so many people have so many views on her death. I believe Korryn Gains was mentally ill and that the stories of her being mentally ill due to water lead poisoning may have some validity which reminded me of the Mitchelle Blair case where this young woman is now serving a life sentence. No consideration was shown toward her mental illness because she openedly admitted she was (not) remorseful and if she had to do it again she would do the same thing. Now this kind of cold blooded mental illness is usually a result of years of abuse and trauma at very young ages as well as poor diet and negative environments. So we need to consider all of these things when we decide to make harsh judgements against the most vulnerable people in America who are our poor Black Mothers and their kids. The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly Compensatory Call-In. We encourage non-white listeners to dial in with their codified concepts, new terms, observations, research findings, workplace problems or triumphs, and/or suggestions on how best to Replace White Supremacy With Justice ASAP. We'll use these sessions to hone our use of words as tools to reveal truth, neutralize White people. We'll examine news reports from the past seven days and - hopefully - promote a constructive dialog. #ANTIBLACKNESS The 2016 Olympic Games began in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this week. However, this was not a time of jubilee for black Brazilians, the largest black population on the planet outside of Africa. Massive numbers of discounted non-white people have been racially dislocated to make room for White recreational enjoyment. Riot police were employed to manage demonstrations during the running of the torch. Speaking of peace officers, Korryn Gaines, a 23-year-old black mother, was shot and killed in her Maryland residence this week. Her five year son was also shot. Gaines used social media to submit her perspective of the conflict, which motivated local enforcement officers to ask Facebook to disable her account. Kenneth Walker also found his homestead under siege. A New York volunteer firefighter, Walker was racially threatened days before his residence was set ablaze. A White terrorist, Matthew Jurado, has been arrested and charged for the arson. And there's no shortage of White Terrorists. Thomas Edwin Blanton Jr's parole bid was denied; Blanton was convicted for his involvement in the 1963 bombing which killed four black girls in a Birmingham, Alabama church. With these hourly onslaughts against black people, Black Lives Matter unveiled an official list of "demands" to remedy the specific black needs and vulnerabilities. #AnswersForMiriamCarey INVEST in The COWS - http://paypal.me/GusTRenegade CALL IN NUMBER: 641.715.3640 CODE 564943# The C.O.W.S. archives: http://tiny.cc/76f6p

The news media is now focused on one thing and one thing alone this election: GOP nominee Donald Trump. And the lack of attention on the Democratic candidate is providing cover for Hillary Clinton to behave in ways that might make her voter base uncomfortable, like hitting up fundraisers with fracking magnates. Then, the killing of Korryn Gaines has brought renewed scrutiny to police tactics--especially in light of the fact that Facebook shut off a livestream of the standoff that led to her death. Journalist Kenneth Lipp joins us to discuss. And reporter Brendan James stops by to talk about Cindy Sheehan, a Gold Star mom who was abandoned by the Democratic Party after she spoke out against the war in Iraq.
