Send us a Positive Review! One thing that Val is always juggling is how to do it all and maintain her sense of humor, high commitment to play, and overall sanity. She loves running the podcast, the groups, and squeezes work with amazing LDS faith-journeying individuals and couples between the cracks (which is a highlight of her week!) Fitting it all in can become tricky, which is why she has been looking for the 'just right' person to help with individuals & couples in Utah looking for a mental health worker with the stamp of approval from Val at Latter Day Struggles. In today's episode you will meet Heather Sundahl, the newest member of Valerie's Latter Day Struggles team. Heather is a licensed mental health worker, a resident of Utah and strongly endorsed by Valerie as someone you can trust on your faith expansion journey. If you loved their laughter, tears (mostly Val!) and banter, you'll love knowing that Heather plans to come on a few times a year to tackle tough topics with Val relevant to your healing and growth. This lecture explores Chapter 21 of the Lotus Sutra, “The Supernatural Powers of the Tathagata,” through the lens of Nichiren Buddhism. It explains how the Buddha demonstrates supernatural powers to confirm the truth of the Lotus Sutra and entrusts its future propagation to the Bodhisattvas of the Earth and to practitioners in later ages. Drawing on teachings from Nichiren, the lecture highlights the importance of chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo as the essence of the Lotus Sutra in the Latter Day of the Law. It also connects the sutra's message to Nichiren's own life, particularly his courage during persecution, illustrating how ordinary people can embody the Buddha's compassion and continue the mission of spreading the Dharma in the world today.

So I recently was invited onto a show called the Maybe God Podcast @MaybeGodPodcast to explore if the restored Gospel which many call Mormonism should be considered Christian or not. A few weeks before the interview the host let me know he wanted to bring on an expert on Mormonism, and so he invited Aaron Shaff. A very vocal protestant critic of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints who lives in Utah. Anyway they pressed hard on everything from Book of Mormon to polygamy and in the end it made for an interesting conversation. I hope you enjoy it. What do you do when God's plan for your life looks completely different from the one you carefully mapped out?In this week's episode of Latter-day Lights, Scott and Emily sit down with author and special guest — Tayma Johnson — to share her journey from never planning to serve a mission, to feeling unmistakably called by the Lord to step into the unknown. Through moments of prayer, spiritual prompting, and unexpected mundane confirmations that subtly nudged her towards mission prep, Tayma recounts how she learned to trust God's timing over her own fears about the future. Her story offers a deeply relatable look at the wrestle between personal desire and divine direction, and how real intent in prayer can open the door to clarity and peace.Tayma also discusses the inspiration behind her upcoming book, “Called to Serve?” which features the stories of 27 women navigating the complex decision of whether or not to serve missions, in hopes to inspire others to take the leap. Alongside reflections on companionship, revelation, and faith during uncertain seasons such as the COVID-era missionary work, this conversation explores how God guides individuals differently—and how seeking to be spiritually ready to receive answers can be just as important as the answers themselves.*** Please SHARE Tayma's story and help us spread hope and light to others. ***To WATCH this episode on YouTube, visit: https://youtu.be/SGXzYv6Hlgw-----To READ Tayma's book, “Called to Serve?” visit: https://www.cedarfort.com/products/called-to-serveTo SUPPORT Emily's non-profit organization, "The Marcovia Project," visit: https://themarcoviaproject.org/To READ Scott's new book “Faith to Stay” for free, visit: https://www.faithtostay.com/-----Keep updated with us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/latter.day.lights/Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/latterdaylightsAlso, if you have a faith-promoting or inspiring story, or know someone who does, please let us know by going to https://www.latterdaylights.com and reaching out to us.

How do you keep pursuing your dreams when rejection, discouragement, and life's responsibilities seem to stand in the way?In this week's episode of Latter-day Lights, Scott and Darla Brandley sit down with U.S. Today's bestselling author, Heather B. Moore, to hear how she built a full-time writing career through perseverance, prayer, and years of steady effort, despite the mountain of rejections as a new name to the publishing scene. Starting as a young mother who wrote her first manuscript at 30, Heather shares how critique groups and constant learning shaped her growth and prepared her for her first ever “pinch me” moment. She reflects on advice to aspiring authors, meeting impossible deadlines while raising four children, the pros and cons of traditional vs. self-publishing, and learning to see closed doors as redirections rather than failures. With her first successful book series, “Out of Jerusalem,” as well as her Praiseworthy Award-winning book, “Rebekah and Isaac,” Heather's story highlights the power of consistent effort, humility, and faith in the creative process, reminding us that when we keep showing up and stay close to the Lord, our gifts can grow in ways we never imagined.*** Please SHARE Heather's story and help us spread hope and light to others. ***To WATCH this episode on YouTube, visit: https://youtu.be/L-Oo9AJd2aY-----To READ Heather's book series, “Out of Jerusalem,” visit: https://a.co/d/0hWacFEATo READ Heather's book, “Rebekah and Isaac (Women of the Covenant),” visit: https://a.co/d/065deF6STo READ more of Heather's work, visit: https://amzn.to/45O8phGTo LEARN MORE about Heather's writing, visit: https://hbmoore.com/ To FOLLOW Heather on Instagram, visit: https://www.instagram.com/authorhbmoore/ To FOLLOW Heather on Facebook, visit: https://www.facebook.com/groups/37783537691To FOLLOW Heather on TikTok, visit: https://www.tiktok.com/@heatherbmooreauthor To WATCH Heather on YouTube, visit: https://www.youtube.com/@heatherbmooreTo READ Scott's new book “Faith to Stay” for free, visit: https://www.faithtostay.com/-----Keep updated with us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/latter.day.lights/Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/latterdaylightsAlso, if you have a faith-promoting or inspiring story, or know someone who does, please let us know by going to https://www.latterdaylights.com and reaching out to us.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has called Elder Clark G. Gilbert to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Joining me live is Ryan Jensen.. editor of Church News.
Send us a textVideo PodcastBefore the Book of Mormon went to press, John Whitmar copied down the "doctrine of Christ" contained in it. It was this doctrine that was taught at the very beginning. However, after the Book of Mormon was printed it was all but put away. There are no sermons, no records of teachings, classes, expounding on the doctrine and the content contained in the Book of Mormon available in early church history. It is seldom mentioned. Instead a very different church emerged under the leadership of Joseph Smith who conveniently called himself as a prophet through revelation. (which came from him). The topics that allured early saints to the movement were an incorrect concept of Zion, a living prophet. a tale of a city right around the corner with the imminent return of Jesus christ, an authority restored to the earth in the form of priesthood who had keys to mysteries and secret things from heaven not available to the common members. A new church took shape with doctrines and teachings far removed from the simple gospel contained in the Book of Mormon The gentiles continue to stumble in favor of the teachings of a man - Joseph Smith - instead of the gospel contained in the Book of Mormon that had just become available- preserved for thousands of years. This continues to this day. Which begs the Question.....will the Gentiles ever really embrace the Book of Mormon gospel of Jesus Christ? What happens when everything you've built your life on falls apart in the blink of an eye?In this week's episode of Latter-day Lights, special guest Clint Huston shares his deeply personal journey from being raised in the Church and appearing to do everything “right” on the outside, to an affair that led to divorce, a battle with pornography addiction, excommunication, and the painful loss of identity that followed. Until, at his lowest moment of feeling cast off, broken, and unworthy, Christ met him with unmistakable love and began a powerful work of restoration.Through therapy, humility, and complete surrender to the Lord, Clint began a long and winding healing journey—one that included addiction recovery, rebaptism, temple restoration, remarriage, and learning to trust God's timing more than his own. Along the way, he discovered that grace is not earned, healing is not linear, and the covenant path is rarely a straight line. This episode is a raw and hope-filled testimony of the Atonement, the patience of God, and the truth that no one is ever beyond Christ's reach. If you've ever felt disqualified, ashamed, or afraid that you're too far gone to be healed, Clint's story is for you.*** Please SHARE Clint's story and help us spread hope and light to others. ***To WATCH this episode on YouTube, visit: https://youtu.be/dNAO7Ul5G00-----To READ Scott's new book “Faith to Stay” for free, visit: https://www.faithtostay.com/-----Keep updated with us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/latter.day.lights/Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/latterdaylightsAlso, if you have a faith-promoting or inspiring story, or know someone who does, please let us know by going to https://www.latterdaylights.com and reaching out to us.

Send us a textLately, I've been noticing just how loud the world feels—and how quickly that noise can turn inward. Anxiety. Judgment. The pressure to keep going, keep producing, keep proving. In this episode of The Latter-Day Ladies Podcast, I talk about mindfulness and the sacred practice of stillness—and how slowing down has helped me find more compassion for myself and a deeper connection to Christ. We talk about why stillness isn't laziness, why emotions aren't a lack of faith, and how Jesus Himself responded to chaos—not with urgency, but with calm presence. If you've been feeling overwhelmed, tender, or exhausted in your spirit, this conversation is for you. There is peace available—not after the storm, but right in the middle of it.
Dr. T. Michael W. Halcomb sits down with longtime friend Aaron Shafovaloff—coder, Greek nerd, and Utah street evangelist—to explore what it actually looks like to talk with Mormons in real-world settings. Moving beyond stereotypes and megaphones, this conversation focuses on respectful, conversational evangelism and why theology, language, and definitions truly matter.Drawing from years of street-level engagement with Latter-day Saints, Aaron shares “seed-scattering” stories and addresses key questions like: Are Mormons Christians? Why do shared words often hide deep theological differences? Where do Christianity and LDS theology truly part ways? They also discuss why some evangelicals are increasingly embracing Mormonism as “just another denomination,” what's at stake in that move, and how historic Christian boundaries bring clarity.Along the way, they touch on Koine Greek, AI tools, and how new technologies may reshape biblical language learning in the church.Guest / Links mentioned:- Utah Christian Research Center: https://utahchristianresearchcenter.com/- Mormonism Research Ministry: https://mrm.org/- Utah Lighthouse Ministry: https://www.facebook.com/utlm.org/#Evangelism #StreetEvangelism #Mormonism #LDS #Utah #Apologetics #Christianity #Gospel #KoineGreek #BiblicalLanguages #GreekNerd #Theology #Missions #Evangelist #Jesus #Christ #Doctrine #Podcast #ProveText #Interview #Apologetics***GlossaHouse resources are available at our website! - https://glossahouse.com/✏️ ***Sign up for classes with GlossaHouse U - https://glossahouse.com/pages/classes
What opportunities are possible like when faith, creativity, and technology collide later in life?In this week's episode of Latter-day Lights, Scott and Emily sit down once again with former Bering Sea Captain and guest, Jake Jacobsen, to explore a life-changing chapter of his journey—using AI and modern technology to bring decades-old lyrics, spiritual reflections, and life stories to life through music and video. After spending nearly three decades navigating some of the most dangerous waters on Earth, Jake shares how long hours alone in the sea became a sacred space for songwriting, prayer, and reflection. Now, years later, those words are finding new expression through AI-assisted music, allowing him to share his testimony of Jesus Christ, the Atonement, and the covenant path with audiences around the world.Jake opens up about the creative process behind his songs, the spiritual intentions guiding his use of artificial intelligence, why he sees this work as part of his personal mission, and his desire to preserve faith-filled stories for future generations. This thoughtful conversation dives into big questions about creative authenticity, inspiration, and discernment in an age of rapidly advancing technology—and how tools like AI can be used intentionally to spread light, hope, and faith in Christ.*** Please SHARE Jake's story and help us spread hope and light to others. ***To WATCH this episode on YouTube, visit: https://youtu.be/j-BIAdsuMBA-----To WATCH Jake's music and talks for LDS Leaders, “The Wheelhouse of Hope,” visit: https://www.youtube.com/@WheelhouseofHopeTo WATCH Jake's music and stories for Christian audiences, “Jake's Wheelhouse,” visit: https://www.youtube.com/@CaptainJakesSongsandStoriesTo LISTEN to Jake's song, “The Master's Music,” visit: https://youtu.be/wnmtbM1vtP8?si=_7yKwCuwrGDLfL_4To WATCH Jake's first Latter-Day Lights episode, visit: https://youtu.be/k5MMS8tEB_ATo READ Jake's book, “Chronicles of Being a Sea Captain,” visit: https://a.co/hYb6gZ5To READ Scott's new book “Faith to Stay” for free, visit: https://www.faithtostay.com/-----Keep updated with us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/latter.day.lights/Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/latterdaylightsAlso, if you have a faith-promoting or inspiring story, or know someone who does, please let us know by going to https://www.latterdaylights.com and reaching out to us.
How do we build spiritual resilience and encourage the youth of today to do the same?To celebrate the anticipated release of her latest book, “Covenant Power,” Scott and Emily sit down with author, seminary teacher, and temple ordinance worker Sharla Goettl to explore what spiritual resilience really means, and how it's formed over time.Drawing from her first book, “Spiritual Resilience,” and leading into three years of wrestling with promptings and reluctance, Sharla shares how patterns found in the life of Nephi reveal a practical, repeatable way to strengthen faith through action, covenant keeping, and personal revelation. Through powerful stories, the conversation also dives into the role of temple covenants in creating an environment where spiritual resilience can grow, how obedience and sacrifice unlock divine power, and why God's “straight and narrow path” is often personalized rather than linear. With thoughtful insights on parenting, youth, agency, and learning to act in faith before understanding the full picture, this episode offers a hopeful, grounding perspective for anyone seeking steadiness in a noisy, uncertain world.*** Please SHARE Sharla's story and help us spread hope and light to others. ***To WATCH this episode on YouTube, visit: https://youtu.be/EKYF0dznlRg-----To READ Sharla's book, "Spiritual Resilience: Leading our Youth to Go and Do," visit: https://sharlagoettl.com/book-spiritual-resilience-leading-our-youth-to-go-and-do/To READ Sharla's 2nd book, "Covenant Power: Transform Fear into Faith through the Power of Jesus Christ," visit: https://a.co/d/5vO8PkhTo LEARN MORE about Sharla's stories, visit: https://sharlagoettl.com/To LISTEN to Emily's song recommendation, "Leave it There" by Charles Albert Tindley, visit: https://hymnary.org/text/if_the_world_from_you_withhold_of_its_siTo READ Scott's new book “Faith to Stay” for free, visit: https://www.faithtostay.com/-----Keep updated with us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/latter.day.lights/Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/latterdaylightsAlso, if you have a faith-promoting or inspiring story, or know someone who does, please let us know by going to https://www.latterdaylights.com and reaching out to us.

How do you keep your faith in God when grief keeps rewriting the life you always dreamed of?In this week's episode of Latter-Day Lights, Scott and Emily sit down with author, mother, and Praiseworthy Award Winner Anneka Walker, to explore how faith, loss, and creativity brought about healing and renewed purpose into her journey as a writer. When multiple miscarriages and high-risk pregnancies crushed her dreams of becoming a mother to 13 children, Anneka's belief in God still led her to unexpected miracles—including a life-saving experience with her miracle baby, and a newfound calling to write. Former BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe joined DJ & PK to talk about his new calling as a mission president for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Oakland and San Francisco, California.
In an interview over the weekend, President Oaks stated that by lowering the mission age for women, we should start to see marriage ages dropping. What do you think of that? I fully agree that this would be a good thing. Are we planning on invading Iran? What did President Trump's post mean when he said, "Help Is On The Way." Cwic Media Website: http://www.cwicmedia.com

I feel like I should make some clever connection between this book and the discussion which raged about the Shroud of Turin, but nothing occurs to me. A Case for Latter-day Christianity: Evidences for the Restoration of the New Testament's "Mere" Christian Church By: Robert Starling Published: 2019 360 Pages Briefly, what is this book about? A broad, and intensive defense of the theology of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). With a special focus on tying that theology to the theology of the early Christian Church. As such it spends a lot of time examining differences between LDS theology and other Christian denominations (things like the Trinity, Grace, The Book of Mormon, etc.) and how those differences look in relation to actual scripture. What authorial biases should I be aware of? Starling has obviously been compiling stuff and working the "Mormons are Christians" beat for a long time. Which is to say he definitely has a dog in the fight. This gives the work a somewhat tendentious tinge. What about my biases? I met Starling at a conference and he asked me to read his book. Outside of that meeting and a follow-up email he sent me there hasn't been any further interaction. So I wouldn't say we were close. I am however pretty close to the topic of "Latter-day Christianity", so that's a pretty big bias. Who should read this book? Anyone who wants to see the comprehensive case for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints being the same Church Jesus Christ established in the 1st Century. Specific thoughts: Who is this book for?
When life feels uncertain and stakes are high on the operating table, how do we learn to trust in the Lord's plan?On this week's episode of Latter-Day Lights, Scott and Emily sit down with Dr. Mark T. Saunders, a semi-retired OB/GYN whose quiet, faithful listening opened the door to dozens of sacred and miraculous stories. While conducting his routinely in-home medical visits, Mark found that his patients—often without prompting—felt compelled to share their deeply personal experiences of divine intervention, healing, and guidance from the Holy Ghost. From a young student almost facing the loss of his leg, to near-death experiences, and unmistakable moments of revelation, Mark reflects on how these encounters strengthened his testimony that God will always a God of miracles no matter the circumstances. This conversation explores the difference between trusting in the wisdom of the world, and learning to rely fully on personal revelation, spiritual sensitivity, and the intentional direction of the Spirit.Rooted in scripture, lived experience, and divine inspiration, this episode is an invitation to slow down, listen more closely, and rediscover what it means to place unwavering trust in the Lord—even when the path forward feels like it's coming to an end.*** Please SHARE Dr. Saunders' story and help us spread hope and light to others. ***To WATCH this episode on YouTube, visit: https://youtu.be/bihxYdh6GzM-----To READ Dr. Saunders' book, "Learning to Trust in The Lord," visit: https://a.co/d/0OLMSuKTo READ Scott's new book “Faith to Stay” for free, visit: https://www.faithtostay.com/-----Keep updated with us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/latter.day.lights/Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/latterdaylightsAlso, if you have a faith-promoting or inspiring story, or know someone who does, please let us know by going to https://www.latterdaylights.com and reaching out to us.
Send us a Positive Review!Series title: Mormon Faith Crisis—Progression, Not Pathology [Part III of III]In this episode Valerie welcomes back friend and researcher Jeff Strong for the third installment of their series exploring Jeff's research learning about the actual experiences of thousands of Latter-day Saints. The theme that came through? Massive amounts of TENSION. Today they go deeper into six distinct kinds of Latter-day Saints and highlight that one type, "the protector" is disproportionately rewarded while other types are often silenced and squeezed to the margins and sometimes out of the church altogether. They unpack how an ignorance of the true diversity of 21st Century LDS membership is causing crippling harm to families and the church itself and emphasize the power that could come if we all understood and supported one another as a truly open and welcoming 'body of Christ'. When depression shapes the life of the person you love the most, will your faith hold—or begin to break under the pressure? In this week's episode of Latter-Day Lights, Scott and Emily sit down with Amanda Harms — a counselor, mother of six, and newly minted PhD in social psychology — to share her personal journey through supporting a spouse living with chronic depression. With mental illness and frayed communication leading to years of financial hardship, cross-country moves, spiritual denial, and seasons of uncertainty in her marriage, Amanda reflects on how compassion, understanding, and Christlike love slowly transformed the way she perceived her husband and herself.Through stories of resilience, motherhood, and the concept of “eternal perspective,” Amanda's journey invites listeners to consider what long-term endurance really looks like — not as a single turning point, but as years of small choices to remain faithful, present, and compassionate. It's a reminder that while answers don't always come quickly, the Lord walks with us through the slow, sacred process of becoming.*** Please SHARE Amanda's story and help us spread hope and light to others. ***To WATCH this episode on YouTube, visit: https://youtu.be/GukEY_jB1-k -----To READ Amanda's book, "Breaking Free from the Shame of Addiction," visit: https://a.co/d/jawXlJTTo READ Scott's new book “Faith to Stay” for free, visit: https://www.faithtostay.com/-----Keep updated with us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/latter.day.lights/Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/latterdaylightsAlso, if you have a faith-promoting or inspiring story, or know someone who does, please let us know by going to https://www.latterdaylights.com and reaching out to us.

He was born December 3, 1940, in St. George, Utah, and early in life served a full-time mission in Great Britain, an experience that shaped his devotion to missionary work and discipleship. Before full-time Church service, Elder Holland was deeply involved in Church education. He earned degrees in English and religious education from Brigham Young University and a master's and Ph.D. from Yale University. He served as Dean of Religious Education, Church Commissioner of Education, and as the ninth president of BYU, where he emphasized gospel learning and helped expand educational opportunities. In April 1989, he was called as a General Authority Seventy. A few years later, on June 23, 1994, he was ordained a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, one of the highest governing bodies of the Church, charged with being a special witness of Jesus Christ to the world. As an apostle, Elder Holland's ministry touched many globally. He frequently spoke at General Conference, sharing heartfelt sermons on Christ's love, the power of the Atonement, and the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon. In 2025, he spoke about the evidence of God's works and testified of the Book of Mormon's impact as a spiritual guide. newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.orgElder Holland was set apart as President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles on October 14, 2025, a role in LDS Church governance that places him next in line to lead the Church under its established order of succession when the Church president passes. Will Kennedy and Isiah Gray are members of Brothaz in the Foyer, a group that produces content to represent and share the experiences of Black members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They are part of a larger group of hosts for the Brothaz in the Foyer Podcast, and their goal is to bring people “from the foyer into the chapel.” This conversation explores their personal journeys, the dynamics of race within the Church, and the importance of fostering understanding and inclusivity. Links YouTube: @brothazinthefoyer Instagram: @brothazinthefoyer TikTok: @brothazinthefoyer Paul Reeve books Transcript available with the video in the Zion Lab community Key Insights Experiences in the Temple: Will and Isiah share how their experiences as Black men in the temple often draw attention, highlighting the need for normalization of diverse representation within sacred spaces. Cultural Differences: The hosts discuss how their backgrounds influence their experiences in the Church, noting that cultural differences can lead to misunderstandings and the need for open dialogue. Reconciliation with Church History: Both emphasize the importance of understanding the Church’s history regarding race, including the priesthood ban, and how this knowledge can strengthen faith rather than diminish it. Empathy and Genuine Interaction: They stress the importance of treating all individuals as children of God and engaging in genuine conversations to bridge cultural gaps, rather than making interactions feel forced or awkward. Political Climate and Faith: The discussion touches on the politicization of race and the need for members to prioritize their faith and love for others over political affiliations, promoting unity within the Church. Leadership Applications Foster Open Dialogue: Leaders should create environments where members feel comfortable discussing sensitive topics related to race and culture, encouraging transparency and understanding. Educate on Church History: Leaders can benefit from familiarizing themselves with resources like Paul Reeve’s book on race in the priesthood to better address historical issues and foster inclusivity. Encourage Representation: Leaders should seek diverse voices in leadership roles and callings, recognizing that representation can enhance the community’s strength and unity, while also being mindful not to tokenize individuals based on race. Folklorist Christopher Blythe of Brigham Young University joins me to unpack the unofficial stories that quietly shape Latter-day Saint belief. We talk three Nephites, seer stones, missionary legends, evil spirits, and why some 'false' stories still tell real truth. Blythe defines folklore as informal ideas we pass along—what parents tell kids, what missionaries swap in apartments, what members share at campfires or in the celestial room, not the correlated manual. Folklore includes what we do, make, and especially what we say: stories, interpretations, and "off-the-record" teachings. "Official" doctrine is correlated and written; folklore is what happens the second we interpret and repeat it. We often misuse the term "folklore" to mean "false doctrine" or "wives' tales," but in academia, it refers to how ideas are transmitted, not to their truth or falsity. Folklore can be deeply sacred—sometimes things we won't share over the pulpit precisely because they mean so much. Angels & Seerstones Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...
