How to Test for Diastasis Recti? Believing you may have a diastasis recti can be a worrisome / frustrating experience. However, there is an abundance of information regarding diastasis recti recovery. We at Restore Your Core have designed a program specifically for women who are suffering from diastasis recti or other abdominal/pelvic floor issues. What is Diastasis Recti? Diastasis recti is the stretching or separation of the rectus abdominis (6 pack) muscles caused by the thinning of the linea alba (midline connective tissue). Diastasis recti separation leaves your abdominal organs unsupported, and if severe, can expose your digestive organs creating a stomach bulge. This separation can range from being isolated above the belly button, within the belly button, and below the belly button sitting above the pubic bone. In some cases, the separation emcompasses the entire mid section of the core. In both men and women, this gap can be created in the midline of your belly anywhere from the pubic bone to the base of your ribcage. During a crunch or sit-up, where one would normally feel tension and closure, there is a space in between. What Does it Look Like? Diastasis recti looks different from person to person. Although in some cases the symptoms can be painful and more present, in some people they aren’t noticeable at all. Below I address the most common and present symptoms you should be aware of in determining whether or not you may have a diastasis recti. Abdominal Bulge An abdominal bulge is not always an indication of a diastasis recti, yet, it can be a symptom. This bulge, or stomach “pooch,” occurs when the abdominal organs become unsupported by the rectus abdominis muscles. This can appear as a cone shape or ridge above and within the area located close to the belly button. However, depending on where the diastasis recti has become isolated, the bulge can range from above the belly button, on the belly button (causing the belly button to flatten), or below the belly button just above the pubic bone. Testing for Diastasis Recti A self-assessment can be performed as follows: Lie on your back in a comfortable position. Bend your knees and place your feet flat on the floor. Place one hand on the midline of your core with your fingers pointing straight down on your abs. If you need support for your head, place your other hand under your head and neck for support. Slowly lift your head and add minimal pressure to your fingers placed on your core. With no diastasis recti, there is the feeling of a toned wall as you lift your head up. If you feel a gap, or your fingers sink into your core, you likely have diastasis recti. In very obvious cases, you can feel the sides of your core muscles in between that gap on the left and right sides. Repeat the process for the areas just above your belly button and below your belly button to determine whether or not the diastasis recti is isolated or in your core as a whole.
On today’s episode of Wonder Your Way to Brilliant I have the privilege of speaking with Rabbi Lynnda Targan, author of Funny You Don’t Look Like a Rabbi: A Memoir of Unorthodox Transformation. Like many of us, there were seeds planted early on in Lynnda’s life that may have pointed to such a choice, but without pausing to heed the call, she might have missed it. With Courageous Curiosity, Lynnda made the choice in mid-life to pursue an unlikely path for a woman with her life profile and has found meaning she never dreamt possible by traveling this ‘unorthodox’ path.
Rabbi Lynnda Targan, author of the newly published memoir, Funny, You Don't Look Like A Rabbi, is the guest on this episode of the Seekers of Meaning Podcast. Change is inevitable in any business. And sometimes, in order to grow, you have to let go. You need to let go of things that are no longer serving your growth, whether that's in your Amazon business or life. That's a key insight from Lori Tomonto, a savvy entrepreneur who has had so much success not only with wholesale bundling on Amazon but also in her other businesses. But to find the freedom and prosperity she enjoys today, she had to make one critical decision in her business. Lori joins me today to share how she began her flea market business and her experiences while running it. She discusses how she started selling on Amazon and why she decided to change her online business model from retail arbitrage to wholesale bundling. She shares her recommendations on wholesale bundling and reveals the benefits of focusing on niches when doing so. She also shares her “time-money” scale, the challenges she faced in her Amazon business, and her advice to people who want to find success in their life but are afraid of change. “You're not going to be good on Amazon if you're trying to do too many. If you want success with bundles, you have to pick a niche.” - Lori Tomonto This week on the Amazon Files: Lori's beginnings in the flea market business and how she pivoted to starting an Amazon business The importance of researching and teaching yourself how to grow a business on Amazon Lori's first year and a half in running an Amazon business and challenges she faced Starting Amazon retail arbitrage and how Lori sourced products to sell Getting ungated on Amazon and the pros and cons of selling in different product categories Wholesale bundling as an answer to price tanking How Lori realized that retail arbitrage was not sustainable in the long-term Why Lori recommends focusing on a niche or two when doing wholesale bundling The opportunities and challenges in wholesale bundling on Amazon How to make your Amazon wholesale bundle difficult to replicate Lori's “time-money scale” and why she decided to liquidate her flea market business and focus on her Amazon business Why Lori didn't liquidate her flea market business into Amazon and how she's reinvesting the capital from it Related Content: Find Wholesale Suppliers Today Amazon Files HUB What Do You Want 2020 to Look Like? What kind of discrimination do Black women face in the legal profession? Tsedale Melaku explores this question and more in her new book: You Don't Look Like a Lawyer: Black Women and Systemic Gendered Racism (Rowman & Littlefield, 2019). Using in-depth interviews with Black women about their lived experiences working in elite law firms, Melaku explores topics including double burden, system gendered racism, and color-blind ideology. She also pushes our thinking further about these issues through discovery of issues including the invisible labor clause and inclusion tax. Her respondents elaborate on their experiences of having their appearances and positions continually scrutinized, leading to hypervisibility and invisibility. Melaku also explores women's experiences of isolation, exclusion, and ultimately attrition through daily experiences as well as through important relationships within professional networks. This book will be of interest to many readers inside and outside of Sociology. Scholars of race, gender, and work will find this to be an important reading for their own work and a critical addition to their classrooms. Anyone working in professional institutions could benefit from reading the experiences of these women and Melaku's clear and thorough analysis of next steps and take-aways. Sarah E.
