Roy Clark is a retired engineer with over 30 years of experience in new product and process development, including optical and spectroscopic measurements in adverse environments. He received his MA in chemistry from the University of Oxford University and his Ph.D. in chemical physics from Sussex University (UK; 1976). He started his own independent research on climate change in 2007. His particular interest is time-dependent or dynamic-surface energy transfer and the calculation of surface temperatures from first principles. In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Giana and Chika review episodes forty-seven through fifty of Fruits Basket (2019)! In episode forty-seven, Yuki and Manabe discuss Tohru and the nature of Yuki's feelings towards her. Tohru's class decides to rewrite Cinderella to fit their odd casting choices. In episode forty-eight, it's showtime! Cinderella-ish is a hilarious success, despite an out of character outburst from Tohru at the end of the show, causing Kyo to wonder about her true feelings towards him. In episode forty-nine, Yuki makes sure to include Machi in the student council's plans to celebrate the end of the school year together. It's also time for the New Year's banquet at the Sohma estate, which results in an unsettling exchange between Akito and Yuki around forgiveness of one another. Tohru spends the holiday with Kyo, Kazuma, and Rin at Kazuma's dojo. Tohru's wish for the new year is for the Sohma's curse to be broken. In episode fifty, Kureno laments to Tohru about his feelings for Arisa. Shigure and Tohru learn the true nature of Kureno's bond to Akito.  It's finale time! Grab your spoon, and let's dig in! Machi makes a mess of the student council room. Manabe and Yuki open up to one another about their struggles. Kakeru Manabe and Yuki have an argument after school when Manabe asks Yuki regarding his feelings about Tohru. The boys have a heart-to-heart conversation, which breaks up the tension between them. In episode thirty-nine, Shigure steps in for Tohru's parent-teacher conference when she learns her grandfather won't be able to attend. Yuki contemplates inviting his own parents to the conference. Hatsuharu and Rin finally reunite. In episode forty, at parent-teacher conferences, Ayame arrives to help Yuki through the very uncomfortable meeting with his mother. In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Giana and Chika return to Fruits Basket (2019) and begin season two! In episode twenty-six, Yuki joins his fellow student council members: Manabe and Machi, and he certainly doesn't know what to make of them. Motoko's embarrassing outburst in the student council room is difficult to see unfold. In episode twenty-seven, Kazuma shows just how exemplary of a father he was, and still is, to Kyo. Kyo and Tohru share a deeply emotional conversation over late night somen regarding their futures. Chika and Giana are unquenchably intrigued, wondering what Shigure's writing is like. Shigure's laundry analogy perfectly encapsulates the feeling of being overwhelmed. In episode twenty-eight, Yuki steps out of his comfort zone yet again to try and better understand his flamboyant brother Ayame by visiting his clothing shop. We get a glimpse into Yuki's difficult relationship with his family, including Ayame growing up. Despite their differences, the brothers strive to meet in the middle so that they can begin to mend their bond. This is possibly the most vulnerable episode we've released on the main podcast. El Nobel de Química 2021 ha sido para dos jóvenes científicos, el alemán Benjamin List y el escocés David MacMillan, afincado en Estados Unidos, por haber desarrollado una nueva herramienta para la química, la organocatálisis asimétrica, más limpia y ecológica gracias a un tercer tipo de catalizador. Esta nueva herramienta puede utilizarse para fabricar todo tipo de productos, desde medicamentos hasta aromas para la industria alimenticia.  El alemán Benjamin List y el escocés David MacMillan, éste último instalado en Estados Unidos son dos investigadores, relativamente jóvenes -ambos tienen 53 años -  y ya son ganadores del nobel de Química 2021. ¿Su logro? Haber revolucionado el campo de la química en el campo de los catalizadores, sustancias que controlan y aceleran las reacciones químicas. Hasta no hace mucho, se pensaba que sólo había dos tipos de catalizadores disponibles, los metales y las enzimas. Pero Benjamin List y David MacMillan, cada uno por su lado, pusieron en marcha un tercer tipo, utilizando pequeñas moléculas orgánicas, dando nacimiento a un nuevo tipo de catalizador o un nuevo procedimiento, la organocatálisis asimétrica, mucho más barato y limpio para el medio ambiente.  Esta nueva forma "ingeniosa" de construir moléculas puede utilizarse para fabricar todo tipo de productos, desde medicamentos hasta aromas para la industria alimenticia.  Goran Hansson, de la Real Academia Sueca de Ciencias, dijo el miércoles 6 de octubre del 2021 durante el anuncio del premio, que el trabajo de ambos científicos  ya ha tenido un impacto significativo en la investigación farmacéutica. The Nobel Prize, instituted in 1901, was initially awarded in five categories – Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature and Peace.  A sixth award, the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences was instituted in 1968 by the Royal Bank of Sweden and first awarded in 1969.  The Nobel Prize is named after Swedish inventor and industrialist Alfred Nobel, and is awarded annually from a fund that Nobel set aside in his 1895 will for this purpose.  This year's Nobel Prize was unique. We had the first Nobel for climate scientists.  The Nobel Prize in Physics this year went to Syukuru Manabe, a Japanese-American meteorologist and climatologist, for his pioneering work on understanding climate change.  In 1967, Manabe and Richard Wetherland wrote a research paper describing the impact of carbon dioxide and water vapour on global warming. Manabe, now at Princeton University, shared one half of the prize with Klaus Hasselmann, another climate scientist. Hasselmann, 89, from the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg, Germany, used Manabe's work and created computer models that managed to link weather and climate. Hasselmann's work helped scientists identify whether a certain phenomenon was caused by natural forces or human activity The other half of the Physics Nobel went to Georgio Parisi for his contributions in advancing the understanding of complex systems Complex systems have a very high degree of randomness, like weather and climate phenomena The Physics Nobel for climate scientists is perhaps a greater indication of how fraught our future is by the perils of global warming.  Before this, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) had won the Peace Nobel in 2007, for its role in creating awareness about the fight against climate change.  The Nobel Prize for chemistry this time has been awarded to Benjamin List and David WC MacMillan. The Nobel panel said List and MacMillan in 2000 independently developed a new way of catalysis. A catalyst is a substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without taking part in the reaction, or without undergoing any changes during the chemical reaction. The Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine has been awarded to American scientists David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian.  They've understood the mechanism through which our body perceives temperature and pressure.  The award-giving body said their discovery could pave the way for new pain-killers. The Nobel Peace Prize this year went to two journalists, from the Philippines and Russia, who have been running independent news organisations in their countries in authoritarian regimes where they face threats of detention and death.  Maria Ressa of the Philippines and Dmitry Muratov of Russia received the Prize “for their courageous fight for freedom of expression”. This year's Nobel Prize for Literature went to 72-year-old Tanzanian novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah, an author of 10 novels and several short stories. And, the Nobel Prize for Economic Sciences went to 3 US-based economists David Card, Joshua D Angrist and Guido W Imbens.  David Card is a Canadian labour economist and Professor of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley.  He has won the Nobel for his empirical contributions to labour economics.  Card has analysed the labour market effects of minimum wages, immigration and education. His work has challenged conventional wisdom. The results of his studies on restaurants in New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania have shown that increasing the minimum wage does not necessarily lead to fewer jobs.  "We now know that the incomes of people who were born in a country can benefit from new immigration, while people who immigrated at an earlier time risk being negatively affected. We have also realised that resources in schools are far more important for students' future labour market success than was previously thought," the Nobel

El Nobel de Física 2021 ha sido para dos expertos en modelos físicos del cambio climático, el japonés estadounidense Syukuro Manabe y el alemán Klaus Hasselmann y para el físico teórico italiano Giorgio Parisi. Un premio relacionado con los sistemas físicos complejos. Los hallazgos de los tres científicos en realidad están relacionados y aportan mucho para comprender el clima y predecir el cambio climático. En esta ocasión, el Nobel de Física 2021 está relacionado con los llamados sistemas físicos complejos, fenómenos difíciles de explicar y entender, pero cuyos efectos van desde la escala atómica hasta la planetaria, incluyendo el cambio climático. Un premio Nobel dividido en dos El premio en realidad se divide en dos, una parte es para el japonés estadounidense Syukuro Manabe, de 90 años de edad y para el alemán Klaus Hasselmann, de 89 años. Ambos son meteorólogos y climatólogos. Los dos científicos fueron distinguidos, en palabras de la academia sueca, "por la modelización física del clima en la Tierra y por haber cuantificado la variabilidad y predicho de forma fiable el cambio climático". Para el jurado, su aporte fue "fundamental" en la creación de los modelos climáticos. Syukuro Manabe, nacido en Japón, pero residente en Princeton, Estados Unidos, demostró en los años sesenta cómo el aumento de los niveles del dióxido de carbono, el CO2 en la atmósfera provoca un incremento en la temperatura terrestre. Klaus Hasselmann, radicado en Hamburgo, al norte de Alemania, fue reconocido por haber logrado establecer modelos climáticos fiables pese a las grandes variaciones meteorológicas. Hasselmann fue pionero en la creación de estos modelos que relacionan la meteorología y el clima. El italiano Giorgio Parisi y el desorden en los sistemas complejos La otra mitad del Nobel de Física 2021 es para el italiano Giorgio Parisi, de 73 años, físico teórico experto en el desorden en estos sistemas complejos, quien radica y lleva a cabo sus investigaciones en Roma. La academia sueca señaló que se le premiaba “por el descubrimiento de la interacción del desorden y las fluctuaciones en los sistemas físicos, desde la escala atómica a la planetaria”. Y aunque sólo hay pocos átomos de hierro, se cambian las propiedades magnéticas del material de manera desconcertante. Y es este aparente desorden lo que estudió Parisi. También es célebre por su ecuación KPZ que “describe la dinámica fractal de los procesos de crecimiento superficial cuando hay transmisión lateral de la información”. Sus hallazgos pueden incluso aplicarse en el área de la sociología o se observan en los movimientos de ciertos grupos de pájaros al volar. Desde Roma nos atendió la periodista Marinellys Tremamunno, para conversar sobre los señalamientos a la Iglesia francesa por ser responsable de más de 200.000 víctimas de abuso: “Esta no es la primera vez que el Vaticano está involucrado en escándalos de abusos a menores”, dijo, por eso “En junio el papa quiso actualizar la Constitución apostólica para garantizar sanciones a sacerdotes y miembros del clero que pudieran esconder casos de abuso”. La periodista indicó: “Hay que ver cuáles serán las sanciones directas que recibirán los aproximadamente 3.000 sacerdotes”. Letošnji Nobelovi nagrajenci za fiziko so Syukuro Manabe in Klaus Hasselmann ter Giorgio Parisi. Kompleksne sisteme zaznamuje nepredvidljivost. Na videz drobna sprememba ima lahko daljnosežne posledice. To nazorno vidimo v spreminjajočem se podnebju. Eden izmed letošnjih nagrajencev Syukuro Manabe je kot prvi pokazal, kako višja vsebnost ogljikovega dioksida v atmosferi vodi k dvigu globalne temperature zraka,. »Dr. Manabe je že v 60ih letih skupaj s sodelavci razvil enega prvih klimatskih modelov,« razlaga doc. dr. Gregor Skok z ljubljanske Fakultete za matematiko in fiziko. Sonagrajenec Klaus Hasselmann pa je razvil metode, s katerimi je uspešno povezal vreme, ki se spreminja dnevno, in podnebje, ki se načeloma spreminja zelo počasi, obenem pa je našel način, kako razločiti vpliv različnih dejavnikov na podnebje. »Pripomogel je tudi k temu, da so kasneje lahko bolj verodostojno pokazali, da so človeški izpusti toplogrednih plinov res povezani s spremebami klime, ki se dogajajo,« še dodaja Skok. Manabe in Hasselman si bosta decembra sicer razdelila polovico nagrade. Drugi del gre v roke italijanskega teoretičnega fizika Giorgia Parisija za novo razumevanje dogajanja v neurejenih, kompleksnih sistemih. Abstract: Olfactory information directly reaches the amygdala through the olfactory cortex, without the involvement of thalamic areas, unlike other sensory systems. The anterior cortical amygdaloid nucleus (ACo) is one of the olfactory cortices that receives olfactory sensory input, and is part of the olfactory cortical amygdala, which relays olfactory information to the amygdala. To examine its electrophysiological features, we recorded individual ACo neurons during the odor-guided go/no-go task to obtain a water reward. Many ACo neurons exhibited odor-evoked go cue-preferred during the late phase of odor-sampling supporting the population dynamics that differentiate go/no-go responses before executing the odor-evoked behaviors. We observed two types of neurons with different anticipation signals: one neuron type exhibited gradual increases of activity toward reward delivery, while another type exhibited a phasic go cue-preferred activity during odor sampling as well as another phasic anticipatory activity for rewards. These results suggest that the ACo may be involved in reward-related behavioral learning by associating the olfactory information with reward anticipation. Copy rights belong to original authors. C., Sasaki, E. Abstract: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a major cause of dementia, with the number of patients with this condition anticipated to exceed 50 million worldwide in the near future. Despite extensive research efforts, no effective measures are available to facilitate the prevention or treatment of AD, which is due in part to a lack of animal models able to closely replicate a human-like disease state. Here, we describe the generation of three mutant marmoset individuals in which exon 9 of PSEN1 gene product has been deleted (PSEN1-DeltaE9). Such DeltaE9 mutations have been reported to cause early on-set familial AD (references 1-5). We used Transcription Activator-Like Effector Nuclease (TALEN) to destroy the 3' splice site of exon 9 in the marmoset PSEN1 gene. To this end, TALEN exhibits high genome-editing efficacy, generates few off-target effects, and produces minimal mosaicism. Indeed, whole genome sequencing and other analyses illustrated an absence of off-target effects and an apparent absence of mosaicism. Fibroblasts obtained from newborn marmosets exhibited uncleaved full-length presenilin 1 protein (PS1) caused by the perturbation of PS1 endoproteolysis as well as an increased ratio of Abeta42/Abeta40 production, a signature of familial AD pathogenesis. To our knowledge, this is the first non-human primate model of familial AD. We intend to make our marmoset model available to the research community to facilitate the global fight against AD. Abstract: The nucleus of the lateral olfactory tract (nLOT) is not only a part of the olfactory cortex that receives olfactory sensory inputs from the olfactory bulb, but also one of the cortical amygdala areas that regulates motivational behaviors. To examine how the neural ensemble activity of the nLOT is modulated by motivational processes that occur during various states of learned goal-directed behaviors, we recorded nLOT spike activities of mice performing odor-guided go/no-go tasks for obtaining a water reward. We found that the majority of the nLOT neurons exhibited sharp go-cue excitation and persistent no-go-cue inhibition responses triggered by an odor onset. The bi-directional cue encoding introduced nLOT population response dynamics and provided a high odor decoding accuracy before executing cue-odor-evoked behaviors. The go-cue preferred neurons were also activated in the reward drinking state, indicating context-based odor-outcome associations. These findings suggest that the nLOT neurons play an important role in the translation from context-based odor information to appropriate behavioral motivation. Abstract: During visual detection tasks, subjects sometimes fail to respond to identical visual stimuli even when the stimuli are registered on their retinas. It is widely assumed that variability in detection performance is attributed to the fidelity of the visual responses in visual cortical areas, which could be modulated by fluctuations of subjective internal states such as vigilance, attention, and reward experiences. However, it is not clear what neural ensembles represent such different internal states. Here, we utilized a behavioral task that differentiated distinct perceptual states to identical stimuli, and analyzed neuronal responses simultaneously recorded from both primary visual cortex (V1) and posterior parietal cortex (PPC) during the task. We found that population activity differed across choice types with the major contribution of non-sensory neurons, rather than visually-responsive neurons, in V1 as well as PPC. The distinct population-level activity in V1, but not PPC, was restricted within the stimulus presentation epoch, which was distinguished from pre-stimulus background activity and was supported by near-zero noise correlation. These results indicate a major contribution of non-sensory neurons in V1 for population-level computation that enables behavioral responses from visual information.
