Recently, in The Free Press, the writer Chris Arnade penned an essay asserting that “Every Man Wants to Be a Hero.” So, this week, we're discussing if that's true, along with what heroism means, the attraction of the anti-hero, forming little boys to be heroes, and why or why not women have the same desire for heroism. Nazis, video games, the Manosphere, and mermen also somehow figure in to the conversation. Because why not!Show Notes:Dignity: Seeking Respect in Back Row America by Chris Arnade“All Men Want to Be Heroes,” by Chris ArnadeInterview with Louise Perry on Honestly (February 14, 2025)“Warbloods”Childcraft 1984: Great Myths and LegendsWall-E This is a public episode. An episode from 5/20/24: Tonight, after a long hiatus, we return to Norse myth with the story of Sigurd's killing of the dragon, Fafnir. Couched in a much longer narrative that contains shape-shifting, war, revenge, brief appearances by Odin and Loki, and finally Sigurd's ability to hear the language of birds and animals, it is a brilliant and vivid example of storytelling in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. I read from the two great sources of the story, the Volsung Saga (in the Jesse Byock translation) and Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda (in the Anthony Faulkes translation). I also discuss the history of the story, and its reworking in the Nibelungenlied, and Wagnerian opera. Listen to the other Great Myths here. What can the Poetic and Prose Eddas, the Icelandic sagas, and skaldic poetry tell us about the most important god in the Norse pantheon, Odin? Tonight, I devote an entire episode to Odin's many masks: as poet and shaman, as god of death and war, and as the perfect embodiment of the world as the Norse knew it, filled with brutality and betrayal. The episode is divided into three sections: (about 5:37) On Odin and poetry; a reading of the most famous stanzas from the Havamal, and the story of Odin's theft of the Mead of Poetry (about 58:07) On Odin and warfare, death (about 1:22:06) What archeology, and classical and medieval historians, can tell us about Odin The nonfiction books I rely on for most of this episode are E. How did the Viking Norse tell a story as important as Ragnarok (the end of the world) in poetry, and then in prose? What does prose require that poetry does not, and vice-versa, and especially when the accounts we have are separated by centuries of historical change, and religious conversion? In this third episode on Norse Mythology, I read the story of Ragnarok from the Prose Edda (dating to c. 1220), and then its corresponding section in the poem Voluspa (c. 1000) in the Poetic Edda. Each section is preceded by the story of the death of Odin's son, Balder, which in many ways precipitated Ragnarok. I also read from a later poem, Balder's Dreams (c. 1300). The translation of the Poetic Edda (and Balder's Dreams) that I read from is by Andy Orchard, and the Prose Edda by Anthony Faulkes. The commentary I read from throughout the episode comes from the translation and commentary by Ursula Dronke. The essential reference books on Norse myth that I will be using for this series are John Lindow's Norse Mythology: A Guide to the Gods, Heroes, Rituals & Beliefs, Rudolf Simek's Dictionary of Northern Mythology, and Andy Orchard's Cassell Dictionary of Norse Myth & Legend. For the next year or more, my series on The Great Myths will focus on Norse mythology. Tonight I introduce the subject and read one of its foundational texts, the poem that starts the Poetic Edda, “Voluspa,” as translated by Andy Orchard. The two translations of the Poetic Edda that I mention are those by Andy Orchard and Carolyn Larrington. The two translations of the Prose Edda that I mention are those by Anthony Faulkes and Jesse Byock. The late, great Dr. Scott Lilienfeld was a professor of psychology at Emory University and editor of Scientific Review of Mental Health Practice. He also co-authored 50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology and was a contributing blogger at Psychology Today. In what quickly became a controversial and landmark episode, Dr. Lilienfeld not only explored the myth that hypnosis is an appropriate memory retrieval tool for alien abduction research, he destroyed it. In the process, he, along with The Jeff and The Jer, examined the Emma Woods/David Jacobs debacle that seemed every bit as surreal as the alien abduction stories in Jacobs's books. Was his behavior appropriate? Is this what happens when a man gets too absorbed in his own conclusions about the unknown? Hear Dr. Lilienfeld's initial impressions. If you know of anyone who is thinking about undergoing hypnosis, please direct them here. This should be required listening for anyone who wants to undergo it or practice it.

One of the definitions of common sense given by Wikipedia is, “good sense and sound judgment in practical matters.” Common sense psychology is a myth. What appears to be common sense is often common nonsense. Scott Lilienfeld, co-author of 50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology, says we should mistrust common sense when evaluating psychological claims (Lilienfeld et al., 2010).Some examples of common sense psychology include: Working while in high school will help students build character and value money. The historical myths surrounding the emperor Constantine, his conversion to Christianity and the claim he created the Bible at the Council of Nicaea are persistent and continue to be propagated in popular culture, despite being total nonsense. Unfortunately, leading atheists also perpetuate these silly ideas, with everyone from Richard Dawkins to Joe Rogan insisting that Constantine was not really a Christian, that he pretended to convert for political reasons and that it was he who set the canon of the New Testament. It is a sad testament to the poverty of these atheists' historical knowledge that their understanding is stunted at the level of the airport thriller, The Da Vinci Code.In this latest podcast episode, I look at the actual historical evidence and show how the caricature of history presented by these public anti-theists is hopelessly wrong.Further readingDavid L. In psychological terms, although our initial personality type is moulded by a combination of genetic influences and early experiences, it is not fixed. It's malleable, voluntary even. This book will tell the story of how our personalities are formed and gives us the tools to shape them in the ways which we desire and which will benefit us most. Drawing on the latest psychological theories and methods, interviews with leading experts, as well as personal anecdote, Christian Jarrett shows us that we can shape ourselves in ways that make our lives better.

Christian Jarrett remembers being interested in psychology as a young teenager. It was when he applied to be a stocker at a grocery store when he was 16 that he became even more eager to learn about why people do what they do, and whether people's personalities change over time. At the Tesco store near his home in the UK, his application was accepted and he went on for the personality assessment, which he failed. He took it again a few weeks later, thinking he might be able to answer the questions to show he was really a team player, outgoing and friendly. He failed again. A third opportunity arrived, and this time he answered the questions with the intention of coming across as a lone wolf, a solitary person who could really focus and get the job done. He failed again. This incident made him even more curious about personality, not just how it changes over time, he was curious whether we could change our personality intentionally. I reached out to Christian after my husband shared his article with me, The Way You Tell Your Story Shapes Your Personality. It was exactly what I needed to read as I was writing my book, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will.  When I reached out to interview him in May of 2019, he was working on his book, in the middle of a move, and changing jobs, and promised to get in touch with me for a podcast interview when things settled down. This episode fulfilled the promise, and boy was it worth the wait. Christian's book is confirmation of much of my work with clients and teams over the past 5+ years, my work is the practical, individual, intentional application of what Dr. Jarrett researched and wrote about in the book. I couldn't be more grateful for our time together as we recorded this episode, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! --- From his website: Dr. Christian Jarrett, Deputy Editor, Aeon+Psyche A cognitive neuroscientist by training, Christian was the founding editor of the British Psychological Society’s Research Digest and an award-winning journalist on The Psychologist magazine. His next, Be Who You Want: Unlocking the Science of Personality Change, was released and available in the US in May 2021. In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I’ve realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don’t realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they’re sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don’t Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana.

When President Biden proclaimed recently that “unions built the middle class,” he was repeating one of unions' biggest myths. Although unions--like a hitchiker--were along for the ride, they were not the driving force that built the middle class. In this episode of Union Free Radio, host Peter List dispels the union myth that “unions built the middle class,” by giving listeners the logic, and the data, that proves the myth false. “You know,” List states, “the bad part about blindly accepting a myth like this is that it gives unions a free pass in order to push bad bills, like the poisonous PRO Act.” Articles and sources cited: Union Myth Buster: WWII, NOT Unions, Built The Middle Class Ken Braun: Big Labor didn't build the middle class Great Myths of the Great Depression (PDF) FDR's Folly: How Roosevelt and His New Deal Prolonged the Great Depression Casualties of World War II | History of Western Civilization II Middle Class Definition Middle-Class Income: What Is It? MYTH VS. REALITY Myth: Successful people are just lucky. Reality: Successful people use their natural talent, start early, work late, set goals, and keep getting better. Myth: You can be anything you want. Reality: You can be anything you are naturally good at... if you earn it. Myth:  You have to choose between success and happiness. Reality:  You can have both, either, or neither, because they are unrelated. Myth:  Work smarter, not harder. Reality:  Work smarter and harder. It takes both to succeed. Myth:  Following your passion is the key to success and happiness. Reality:  Success is the result of talent, hard work, and persistence. Happiness naturally occurs when you help others and grow as a person Myth:  Thirty is the new twenty. Reality:  Thirty is still thirty, and your twenties are still your defining decade. In beginning a new series of Great Myths, now delving into Celtic mythology, I read the short but representative story, "The Dream of Óengus" (Aisling Óenguso). I also discuss how many aspects of the story serve as a nice introduction to the larger stories I will talk about and read from in future episodes. The translation of "The Dream of Óengus" that I use comes from Jeffrey Gantz's wonderful book, Early Irish Myths & Sagas. For anyone entering into these stories, I will also never stop recommending James MacKillop's Oxford Dictionary of Celtic Mythology. It is one of the great reference books. Scott Lilienfeld is professor of psychology at Emory University. Here, he talks about his 2016 article evaluating the psychological literature on microaggressions and his 2017 article about revoking the Goldwater rule. Scott is an Association for Psychological Science fellow, and he has published numerous studies in personality psychology, social psychology, political psychology, and clinical psychology. He also has an interest in debunking popular myths. His popular books include Brainwashed: The Seductive Appeal of Mindless Neuroscience and 50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology. Timeline: 1:06 The history behind Scott’s micro-aggressions critique 7:01 Two big weaknesses in research studies 15:23 Real-world implications 20:05 Reactions to the article 26:05 The Goldwater Rule, and revoking it in 2017   You can learn more Scott Lilienfeld at his website.  A gated copy of his paper on micro-aggressions, entitled “Microaggressions: Strong claims, inadequate evidence” is here. And it is summarized in this blog post by Musa Al-Gharbi.  His paper on the Goldwater is here. Selected Quote: “One big criticism concerns the nature of the construct of micro-aggressions itself. Do we understand what it is? And one of the points I raise is that even though there’s something there, it’s so vague and so nebulous, it could, in principle, include almost anything that could offend almost anyone. And I think that’s part of the problem. It lends itself to too much abuse, too much misunderstanding.“   Other episodes of Half Hour of Heterodoxy.

Was sind unsere frühesten Kindheitserinnerungen (infantile Demenz)?

Dr. Scott Lilienfeld is Professor of Psychology at Emory University in Atlanta. Scott is a Fellow of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, a Consulting Editor for Skeptical Inquirer and the Founder and Editor of the CSI journal Scientific Review of Mental Health Practice. He’s a regular contributor to Scientific American Mind, and is Psychology Today's Skeptical Psychologist, where he investigates questionable, controversial, and novel claims in psychology. His principal areas of research include evidence-based practices in psychology and the challenges posed by pseudoscience to clinical psychology. In this conversation with Karen Stollznow, Scott discusses his latest book, 50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology: Shattering Widespread Misconceptions About Human Behavior, co-written with Steven Jay Lynn, John Ruscio and the late Barry Beyerstein. The book treats a staggering 300 urban legends, myths and misconceptions; this is the “Mythbusters” of psychology. Scott explains the difference between psychology and “pop psychology”, which is fraught with what he calls “psychomythology”. He discusses how myths develop and disseminate, and he reports that even the experts can be deceived by these commonly-held beliefs. These myths are unpredictable blends of fact and (mostly) fiction, but as we find out, fact is sometimes even stranger than fiction. Scott busts some surprising myths, and argues for the importance of myth busting. When we believe in these myths there are often real-world consequences, but debunking itself carries risks. He discusses how to counter these myths and the “unsinkable ducks”, and how to critically evaluate future claims as we’re presented with them. Aiming to “demystify psychology”, Scott is an advocate for the effective communication of psychology to the public, and also for science-based psychology. He considers the unreliability of our intuition, gut-feelings and our (not-so) common sense, and how science is “uncommon sense”. Scott admits that human experience makes us all armchair psychologists, and we are all susceptible to Dr. Phil-psychology and self-help books. But self-help is more often hindrance than help. Backed up by science, this book is the real self-help.
