It was while researching the provenance of a child's boomerang, found in topsoil near the site of Melbourne Zoo, that Kimberley Moulton found the key to her curatorial vision for We Are Eagles, the latest edition of the TarraWarra Biennial. The Yorta Yorta curator worked with artefacts and other historical material at Melbourne Museum for years before moving into contemporary art in her current role at the Tate in London. Kim explains how that boomerang unearthed a long-buried and disturbing history and earned its place in the biennial, which includes 20 new commissions from artists such as Lisa Hilli, Shireen Taweel, Iluwanti Ken, Nathan Beard and Warraba Weatherall.

rWotD Episode 2837: Freckled duck Welcome to Random Wiki of the Day, your journey through Wikipedia’s vast and varied content, one random article at a time. The random article for Saturday, 8 February 2025 is Freckled duck. The freckled duck (Stictonetta naevosa) is a waterfowl species endemic to Australia. The freckled duck has also been referred to as the monkey duck or oatmeal duck. These birds are usually present in mainland Australia, but disperse to coastal and subcostal wetlands in the dry period. During such times it is common for the freckled duck population to congregate in flocks in the same area, giving the impression that they are more common than they really are.The freckled duck population is at risk of further reduction from habitat destruction, droughts and game hunting. Often habitat destruction and drought can lead to an increase in hunting, as the freckled duck is forced to disperse into more coastal ranges where they may not be recognised as a protected species. In the past few decades, several institutions have established breeding programs to aid in supplementation of the freckled duck population. Such establishments included, but are not restricted to the Hunter Wetlands Centre Australia, Slimbridge Wetlands, Melbourne Zoo, Bronx Zoo, Adelaide Zoo, Healesville Sanctuary, and Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. The success of these institutes has been variable, with some failing to establish self-maintaining colonies. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:39 UTC on Saturday, 8 February 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Freckled duck on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Kajal.

Have you heard of ‘super sweet' sweetcorn? If you've purchased fresh, frozen or tinned sweetcorn in the last few decades there's a good chance its the super sweet variety. It's an example of how our fruit and vegetables have been bred over time to make them sweeter, or less bitter. Its partly about appealing to consumer tastes, but can have other advantages such as better storage and reducing food waste. In this programme Ruth Alexander finds out how and why the taste of our fresh produce is changing, and asks if we're gaining sweetness, what are we losing? Ruth visits Barfoots farm on the south coast of England, the biggest supplier of fresh sweetcorn in the UK, all of it super sweet varieties. Plant breeder Dr Michael Mazourek at Cornell University in the United States explains how selective breeding works, and what sort of characteristics have been prioritised by the food industry. Dr Sarah Frith, vet at Melbourne Zoo in Australia explains why they've stopped giving fruit to the animals. And Dr Gabriella Morini, chemist at the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Italy explains the latest research on bitter flavours, and why they might be good for us. If you'd like to contact the programme email thefoodchain@bbc.co.uk Presented by Ruth Alexander. Produced by Beatrice Pickup. Kate and Mandy chat to Phoebe, Education Officer at Werribee Open Range Zoo and Zoos Victoria! Phoebe is a triple Pea - a qualified peacher, a Pea mum of two boys both diagnosed with autism and ADHD, and herself recently diagnosed with autism and ADHD. Phoebe is passionate about her job at the Zoo where she's been working for the past 16 years. School children from all across Victoria of all ages come to Zoo on excursions to learn about conservation, and Phoebe says that the environment can be particularly suitable and supportive for neurodivergent kids. Kate and Mandy reflect on how much the Zoo has meant to them personally, offering a safe, inclusive and consistent place to bring their peashoots and families over the years. Mandy recalls the Association for Children with Disabilities Dream Day at the Melbourne Zoo, which Phoebe says paved the way for the Zoo to improve inclusion and accessibility, including providing training for Zoo staff about Pea family needs, and installing Changing Places facilities at each of their four Victorian sites. The Zoo also now provides social stories and sensory maps to help prepare kids before they come to the Zoo on excursions. The Zoo is also very welcoming of adults with disabilities who come to the Zoo for time outdoors in a safe, welcoming and enjoyable environment. Phoebe also says that 10 percent of the Zoo's staff have disabilities, and they're improving their accreditation and hiring practices for volunteers with disabilities. Mandy, Kate and Phoebe also reminisce about the role the Zoo played during COVID lockdowns, where they opened up through digital programs and entertained everyone through the Animals at Home livestreams!Thank you so much for sharing your story with us Phoebe and reminding us all of how much we love our Zoos, and how they're safe, welcoming and accessible places for our Pea families. Stress can be seen as an early warning system given by our bodies as a sign that there's something wrong within ourselves. Acknowledging stress as an early warning system is one thing, the second thing is the way we manage the stress so it won't give us negative effects on our mental health. But, how do we manage stress? Is there any effective way to relieve stress?  In this episode of Bouncing Back: The Personal Resilience Science Insights Podcast, host Tia Harmer is joined by Merryn Snare, a Melbourne based psychologist. As a psychologist, Merryn is specialized in the field of stress and anxiety. Other than that, she also co-founded a arachnophobia (spider phobia) program in conjunction with the Melbourne Zoo.  The conversation started by getting to know Merryn through her favorite book, the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson. As an introduction, Merryn explained two types of stress in a human and how it affects our resilience. Then, she also shared some practical tips on how to manage stress so that it won't affect our mental health.  Follow Merryn's work via http://www.annihilatestressandanxiety.com/ or connect with her via LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/merrynsnare/  Produced by the Personal Resilience Science Labs, a division of LMSL, the Life Management Science Labs.  Explore LMSL at https://lifemanagementsciencelabs.com/ and visit http://pr.lmsl.net/ for additional information about Personal Resilience Science Labs. Three baby elephant calves are due for delivery at Melbourne Zoo in November, December and January, and it sounds as though their arrival is well timed.  Not only are the elephants due for transfer to an expansive new habitat in Werribee in 2024, but the zoo itself has adopted a new elephant-led approach to their care, in which the animals have greater autonomy - including everything from choosing when to offer up their ear for a blood test to when (and whether) they might enter a crate for transportation. In an interview hosted by Good Weekend senior writer Melissa Fyfe - author of Baby Giants, our featured story this week - veteran zookeeper Lucy Truelson talks about everything from breeding in captivity to the splendour of working with a five tonne animal. “The key for us as zookeepers is delving into ‘How do these animals live in the wild?'" Truelson says. "Let's learn about that, and then ask ‘How do we replicate that in their everyday care?'” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

She's spent years working with children and animals (a combination many of us would steer clear of) and yet Gaye Hamilton says the transferable skills gained in secondary science education and zoo management paved the way for her varied and fascinating career and board journey. “Children and animals are equally unpredictable but also rewarding when you get the chance to stick with it,” Gaye tells Claire in this podcast. Today Gaye is Deputy Chancellor at Victoria University, Chair of the Western Bulldogs Community Foundation board and board member of Western Chances, a not-for-profit that helps young people in western Melbourne who are facing financial barriers achieve their potential. But Gaye started her professional career as a high school teacher before joining the Zoo Education Service, working at Melbourne Zoo. She then went on to become Director of Werribee Open Range Zoo before moving to Museum Victoria as Director of Scienceworks in the mid-90s, redeveloping the museum and building and opening the new Melbourne Planetarium. In 2002, Gaye became Director of Museum Operations with Museum Victoria, overseeing daily operations of Scienceworks, Melbourne Museum, Immigration Museum and the Royal Exhibition Building, the position she retired from at the end of 2004. In the 1990s Gaye joined her first board with the Gould League of Victoria. There followed over the next 30 years board appointments where, as a trusted member of the western Melbourne community, Gaye has been able to indulge her passions for sport, education and the environment. This has included positions on the Old Treasury Building Committee of Management, the Queen Victoria Women's Centre Trust, the People and Parks Foundation board, the Western Bulldogs Football Club Board, the Zoos Victoria Board, the State Sports Centres Trust, the Council of Victoria University and most recently the Western Chances board and Chair of the Western Bulldogs Football Club Community Foundation board. As she tells Claire: “It's been quite the rollercoaster.”   LinkedIn: Gaye Hamilton | Claire Braund (host) Further Information:  WOB membership, events & services, please visit our website. FLAT CHAT

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 24, 2020 36:27

In this week’s Flat Chat Wrap, Jimmy and Sue discuss Australia's coronavirus lockdown and what it means to people living in apartments. There’s the whole issue of returned travellers settling in to 14 days of self-isolation and whether or not they really will wear masks when they pass through common property, as government health measures demand. We look at lifts and whether or not we should travel in them with strangers.  And then there are gyms and pools, with news that some apartment blocks are shutting them down, just to be on the safe side. But what do you do when the government also advises you to exercise to boost your immunity?  Is the thump-thump of you exercising at home not really just revenge for the late night doof-doof of the downstairs neighbours’ sound system? Pets and hoarding are also on the agenda along with growing outrage over Airbnb hosts offering self-isolation packages in apartment blocks. Should we turn our asylum seeker detention centres into quarantine camps for suspected Covid-19 carriers and low-level sufferers? And there’s a fascinating clip from a BBC podcast about coronavirus misinformation, with Jimmy explaining how he fell for bogus medical advice passed on by a normally reliable strata source. And you can find a more detailed and expansive look at coronavirus conspiracies here. FYI, if you want the latest real and truly reliable information on Covid-19, log into the Federal Government Health website, the NSW Health website, and the Victoria Health website. There are also websites for Queensland, WA, South Australia, Tasmania, ACT and the NT. Finally, on the bright side, there’s a virtual visit to a couple of zoos, with furry friends to keep you company during your less-than-splendid isolation. Melbourne Zoo has a live ‘animal-cam’ where you can watch cute snow leopard cubs, majestic giraffes, penguins and other animals. Meanwhile, Mogo Zoo on the NSW South Coast has a beautiful picture gallery and you can support these survivors of the recent bushfires who are doing it tough all over again with tourist numbers, obviously, having hit a new low. Enjoy.
