Angela is joined again by Kate Muir, to discuss the complexities of midlife, focusing on hormones, brain health, and mental well-being. They discuss the misconceptions surrounding hormone therapy, emphasising the benefits of bioidentical hormones compared to synthetic options, and highlight the significant risks associated with obesity and alcohol consumption. Kate and Angela also touch on the importance of lifestyle changes, such as exercise and nutrition, in managing menopause symptoms. KEY TAKEAWAYS Hormone Therapy and Risks: Body-identical hormone therapy, especially estrogen, can lower breast cancer risks, unlike older synthetic options. Mental Health and Hormones: Hormonal shifts during menopause impact mental well-being, with a strong correlation between low estrogen and increased anxiety or depression. Bone and Muscle Health: Estrogen helps preserve bone density, essential to preventing osteoporosis. Women should also focus on strength training and protein intake. Diet and Supplements: High-protein diets, creatine, and supplements like sulforaphane support brain health and offset hormone declines. Awareness in Younger Women: Early education on bone health and hormone impacts could improve lifelong well-being. Preventing Exploitation: Be cautious of “menopause-targeted” products with questionable benefits, like "menopause chocolate." Angela welcomes Kate Muir, to discuss her bestselling book, "Everything You Need to Know About the Pill, But We're Too Afraid to Ask." Kate shares her personal journey and research findings related to the effects of hormonal contraception, particularly focusing on the pill. She delves into the impact of different types of pills on mental health, libido, breast cancer risk, and overall well-being. KEY TAKEAWAYS The pill can have significant effects on mental health, libido, and overall well-being, with synthetic hormones impacting serotonin levels and mood. Different types of pills contain varying progestins and oestrogens, leading to different side effects and risks, such as increased breast cancer risk. Options like the copper coil and natural cycles provide non-hormonal alternatives, with potential benefits for mood and overall health. Body-identical pills with natural oestrogen and safer progestins show promise in reducing side effects and improving mood. Trials for male contraception, such as a shoulder gel, show potential with minimal side effects, offering a new perspective on shared contraceptive responsibility. BEST MOMENTS "I think the pill had sort of ground her down. And when she came off it, she was great. You know, there are other issues in people's lives, but that was clearly a cause of her low mood and depression, real flat mood." “Despite me having been diagnosed with three bouts of postnatal depression and then major depressive disorder for a number of years with possible bipolar, their first instinct was, well, we just need to get you back on the pill." “Doctors are really not trained in hormones at all" “We did a big poll for Channel 4. And I think we found about something like, 7 to 14% were getting it for sort of acne or skin. And lots and lots of people were going on it for heavy periods or irregular periods." In my ninth episode there is the opportunity to hear three examples of different English idioms as you listen to Lynne and I's discussion of her experience of the menopause. There are again many points you can reflect on, which means to think carefully about something and consider different possibilities, opinions, and approaches to something. Reflection is an important skill in healthcare, and it helps us to continuously improve the care we deliver. I recommend the UK organisation ‘The Menopause Charity' to complete some further study and to practice your English reading skills. They have some fantastic resources, specifically for healthcare professionals. We're borrowing this brilliant title from a panel at QED, and while we're at it, we're also borrowing one of the panelists, Nicola Throp, to cover all things Menopause - what it is, why we need to talk about it, and the barriers that women face in not just its treatment, but the recognition of what is happening to them and diagnosis from their providers. This is a significant life event that half of the world will experience, and women have historically kept it to themselves. It's well beyond the time to break this taboo. Today we're celebrating Menopause Awareness month (now there's a phrase I couldn't have imagined saying four years ago when I was writing The Shift book and everyone was telling me no-one was interested in menopause or women over 40…) And I'm delighted that my guest is a leading light in the British menopause movement.Dr Louise Newson is a GP and menopause specialist who is passionate about increasing awareness of menopause and perimenopause care for all women. (That ALL is crucial.) As well as her own private practice specialising in menopause, Louise is founder of the Balance app and the Menopause Charity. Plus author of the bestseller, the definitive guide to perimenopause and menopause.Louise joined me to talk about her personal menopause experience (sorry to say, even doctors struggle to get help), the lack of female role models in medicine and what drives her menopause mission. She recalls being ‘told off' for prescribing HRT, her battle to get women's health front and centre on the agenda and answers some of your most asked questions. Lorna Cullen has recently returned from an incredible adventure run across the length of Scotland, England and Wales. Despite not starting running until later in life to counteract mental health problems, Lorna has been planning an extreme challenge. It was something which came into reality this year in the form of a JOGLE, with a twist. Lorna loved the idea of completing the John O'Groats to Lands' End run, but didn't want to do the organised event and was keen to add her own mark. She decided to add in running to three peaks: Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowden, raising money for The Menopause Charity and Mind along the way. Running Tales spoke to Lorna about her incredible journey, battling dodgy trainers, enjoying the wilds of Scotland and Wales, and beating the menopause... ---------------------------------- You can sponsor Lorna to raise money for The Menopause Charity and Mind here: Mind - https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Lorna-D-Cullen The Menopause Charity - https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Lorna-Cullen If you like this episode please consider donating to help us keep going: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/stepforward The music in this podcast is: "Fearless First" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

"Everyone should be able to get their hormones back on the NHS shouldn't they?" Dr Louise Newson is the UK's leading voice on menopause and perimenopause. Seven years ago, she set up a private clinic because she'd heard from so many women who were being offered antidepressants for their menopause, instead of HRT. Louise hadn't wanted to go down the private route - she had found that was her only option. Her aim, at first, was to be able to help a few people, but word spread and now her clinics see over 4000 women a month. Since then, she's set up the https://www.balance-menopause.com/ (Balance website and app), specifically to help women who can't afford to go private, and she's set up https://www.themenopausecharity.org/ (The Menopause Charity), which is all about working with healthcare professionals and individuals, to help them through menopause too. The Effin Hormones gang discover what prompted Louise to campaign so passionately for an evidence based approach to the treatment of menopause, and how she managed to miss her own symptoms! Louise also answers questions from Effin Hormones listeners. You'll learn a heck of a lot in this episode, and hopefully find some inspiration too. Louise cites some research papers, which you can access here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1e-8Gi_Eme5zJuZt5gkrbB5hdKbeS0VBb/view?usp=sharing (Back to the future: Hormone replacement therapy as part of a prevention strategy for women at the onset of menopause ) https://drive.google.com/file/d/1iWiVBlm0oLxbSaA7NmgDUpcz9JbNqTNh/view?usp=sharing (Menopause and cardiovascular disease ) https://drive.google.com/file/d/1IhjeedkHFnjrYBx88k9oQn8EXNi7IZ8b/view?usp=sharing (Menopausal hormone therapy: why we should no longer be afraid of the breast cancer risk)
Hello, and welcome to the refreshing, energised vibe that is September! I hope you all had a wonderful summer! Today's episode is a really important topic to me, and one I feel really passionate about. It is still considered to be a bit of a "taboo" topic in industries such as ours, but thanks to the work of a few it is becoming more popular, and that topic is.... MENOPAUSE What is it and how does it affect me? Menopause affects all women at different stages of life, and can cause the end of a career for some if they are not supported and educated correctly. It is not just "hot flushes" and a sign of age.... Menopause can cause a huge variety of life changing symptoms, and peri menopause can be just as powerful if not addressed. In today's episode, we speak to the wonderful Lucinda Pincott, Menopause Awareness Advocate. I met Lucinda at an event recently, where we were both asked to be a speaker on this topic. We connected personally and professionally and I knew instantly I wanted Lucinda to join the podcast for you all to hear her story and the invaluable insight she brings! There's a condition that leads to an increased risk of heart disease, dementia, and early death that's been affecting people for as long as they've existed. The many symptoms can severely impact quality of life - ranging from headaches and memory problems to anxiety and weight gain. This condition affects more than half of the world's population, but unbelievably its rarely discussed and the scientific research that exists on it is limited. It's called menopause, and it affects 1.2 billion women worldwide. It's not a disease, but the effects can be just as serious for some women. What we're talking about today will impact 50% of the population, 100% of the timeYet we don't prepare for it. There are no specific clinics within the NHS solely dedicated to the treatment of this expected condition. There is incomplete and misleading information and relatively little ongoing research on how to tackle this problem. To compound this dire scenario, this condition impacts multiple parts of the body. Bone health, heart health, brain health, skin health, mental health, sexual wellbeing. AND it costs 100s of millions (if not billions) of pounds in direct healthcare costs as well as loss in productivity and quality of life.If you've seen the title of today's podcast, you'll know I'm talking about the menopause. But if you were confused and were not immediately getting the answer, I don't blame you. The menopause is shrouded in secrecy, stigma and unfortunately millions of women across the world are simply not getting access to life changing treatment … which we already have!Dr Louise Newson, author of the No. 1 Sunday Times bestseller Preparing for the Perimenopause and Menopause, is my guest today and is one of the UK's leading menopause specialists determined to help women thrive.I love this book and am gifting it to many colleagues because Dr Louise demistifies the menopause and equips the reader with evidence-based advice and practical tips on: HRT treatment options, why menopause should be referred to as a longterm hormone deficiency, and how the right treatment complemented by optimising sleep, nutrition, exercise, and mental health can be so effective. If that wasn't enough ...Dr Newson is a GP and menopause specialist and holds an Advanced Menopause Specialist certificate with Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare and the British Menopause Society. She produces evidence-based free content for women about the perimenopause and menopause on the menopausedoctor.co.uk website and social media. It is my absolute pleasure to introduce you to 50-year-old Olympian-turned-personal trainer and lifestyle coach, Michelle Griffith Robinson. The very first Olympic athlete to be featured on That's Not My Age. Whoop! As a triple jumper, Michelle represented Team GB at the 1996 Olympic Games and was the first woman to jump over 14-metres at the Commonwealth games. Here, Michelle talks about her incredible career, both on and off the track, and shares how she found the determination, focus and strength to succeed. She is evangelical about the benefits of exercise, as a way to cultivate a positive mindset and healthy, balanced lifestyle, at every age. And so, of course, I asked for some tactics on how to motivate yourself in mid-winter...When not training and inspiring her clients, Michelle is an expert panellist for Women's Health magazine and is committed to helping others through her charity work. We talk about age and she describes how the peri-menopause led her to becoming an ambassador for The Menopause Charity in order to help inform and empower other women of colour.Michelle is an absolute star, a go-getter with boundless energy and enthusiasm. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed recording it.
I am so happy you are here. Sometimes there is a topic with a massive gap in my own knowledge. This episode came about for exactly that reason. I realised that I knew embarrassingly little about Menopause, the process, perimenopause, treatment, symptoms, and the impact it could have on women. I wondered if you might feel the same, so I managed to get one of the UK's leading experts on the show - Dr. Louise Newson to talk about it. Many of you might know of Louise and her work from the documentary about menopause with Davina McCall and her appearances on TV talking about this important and undervalued topic. She is a GP and renowned menopause specialist who holds an Advanced Menopause Specialist certificate with the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare and the British Menopause Society. She is passionate about improving education about perimenopause and menopause and improving awareness of safe prescribing of HRT to healthcare professionals. In this episode you'll learn about: The basics How to know if you might be peri-menopausal - this was a massive light bulb for me HRT and myths Why has it been such a taboo untalked about subject for so long and what we can do about it Where you can get support and any action you might need to take in your own life I loved this episode. I feel so much more knowledgeable and empowered than before, which is always my objective when I speak with anyone for the podcast. As you'll hear in the episode there just isn't enough conversation and resources about this. Please do share this episode if you think it will be helpful. It is astonishing to think how badly educated we all are about such an important topic; how much misinformation is out there and how understudied women's health really is. "Menopause is a huge cause of osteoporosis, dementia and heart disease… and the most common cause of death in women is… dementia and heart disease!”Since our episode with Dr Shahzadi Harper on perimenopause we realised we needed to find out more, especially about the questions around hormone replacement therapy (HRT). So, we decided to dig deeper and talk to “the leading menopause specialist,” according to The Telegraph, Dr Louise Newson.Dr Louise Newson is Founder of Balance App, the world's biggest repository of evidence-based and medically approved menopause information. Dr Newson is a trailblazer when it comes to empowering women in making informed decisions to benefit their health and wellness. In this week's podcast we meet up with the amazing Petra Coveney, founder of Menopause Yoga, who wants to help folks re write the menopause by writing our own Menopause stories. Petra herself is 55 and loving life in her Post Menopause and we are delighted she could join us on this week's podcast to give us some tips and talk about how stories of our middle age have, throughout History, been stolen by men and often portrayed as mad hysterical hags - but enough about Jinty & Lou! She is on a mission to change this and wants to help all folk write their own Menopause stories. Petra teaches Menopause Yoga workshops, and you will hear how this is a one stop shop, a holistic approach where Eastern wellbeing meets Western medicine. She now teaches other Yoga teachers the MY method which means peri and post Menopausal folk can find MY workshops all over the world. We hear Petra's story of self-learning and research to combine techniques and bring in many other elements to help woman through menopause. She is a force of nature when it comes to women and menopause and she gifts her 3 tips for menopause that you won't want to miss. We continue with Fern Riddell's Sex Lessons From History and we get to know about sex toys through the ages and why California has a hideous history of birth control. There's a new feature this week, The Movie Collective, Jinty has been to the movies and gives us her review. Lou has an issue with swimsuit sizing that will make Johnny Boden's ears ring and we announce our Wine Collective for the next episode. The Book Collective continue with Fern Riddell's Sex Lessons From History and we get to the nitty gritty of orgasms, and technology (dildos) and also learn about California's appalling sterilisation program that only stopped in 1979. We read the last 3 chapters next week, 12, 13 and 14. The Wine Collective prep for next week with Lou's choice a rose, Quintessence Mediterranee from Marks and Spencer's and Jinty's non-alcoholic choice Cornwalls Pentire Seaward (try with Tonic or ginger beer.) International broadcaster and host of critically acclaimed podcast, Soundtracking, Edith Bowman joins The Midpoint this week. For over two decades, Edith has held court in the UK's largest media houses. From MTV and Capital FM to Channel 4, Virgin Radio and of course Radio 1 she's lived life in the fast lane. But she was forced to slow down when BBC management altered her contract, and the course of her working life. Edith has since found a second focus in film and is riding new highs after she hosted the BAFTAs earlier this year. She's also moved to the Cotswolds, brought a gorgeous dog and rekindled her love of fitness. So how has this city-dweller adjusted to countryside living? Has she regained the work-life balance lost in lockdown? And now, at 47, what does she think of the word 'perimenopause'? Edith's family also have a long history with Cancer, so leading menopause expert and founder of the balance menopause app and The Menopause Charity, Dr. Louise Newson, is here to tell us what's really going on when it comes to HRT and the Big C.
“Menopause… could be a time where we're most productive, but we have to get the right help and support for that to happen.” - Dr. Louise Newson Dr. Louise Newson is a GP, menopause expert and best-selling author who is on a mission to educate women and healthcare professionals about menopause. She has created the free app ‘Balance' and The Menopause Charity to provide support to women and their families. Dr. Newson believes it's time for the narrative around menopause and the perception of HRT to change, and for women's experiences in the healthcare system to improve - allowing them to focus on optimizing for their health and longevity.
In this episode, Dr Louise Newson talks to GP and Trustee of The Menopause Charity, Dr Radhika Vohra. Radhika is a GP with a special interest in women's health, particularly the menopause and perimenopause. She is also an educator for GP trainees and other healthcare professionals. Together they discuss the current landscape of menopause care in the UK, the poor profile menopause has in healthcare, training and research and the improved appetite professionals now have for more menopause education. Radhika shares her insights from a women's health perspective and hopes the work of The Menopause Charity will be a voice for everyone. Radhika's 3 hopes for menopause across the globe: Greater recognition of the impact of perimenopause and menopause on women's lives More education for women and healthcare professionals alike Better support for women and professionals working with menopausal women.
