“We've had some guys who've run over 20,000 miles.” In this RDP throwback episode, Frank Ruona has been coaching inmates to run marathons for over 15 years. Frank is a seasoned marathon runner and run club coach that has discovered his efforts with coaching inmates has had the power to transform the lives of those prisoners even from behind bars. The simple act of helping inmates set goals and work hard to achieve them has developed focus, discipline, dedication, and consistency in the lives of these inmates. Frank doesn't view inmates as disposable people and has helped foster real personal growth for the men he coaches. The structure and guidance he provides is something many of the inmates are getting for the first time in their lives. He is seeing first hand the power the sport of running has to truly transform lives and now he's helping demonstrate to other prisons the power that running can have in an individual's life. Luis and Franklin discuss this transformation and Franklin's running career. Support Road Dog Podcast by: 1. Joining the Patreon Community: https://www.patreon.com/roaddogpodcast 2. The San Quentin Prison Marathon has an unconventional route: 105 dizzying laps around a crowded prison yard. Director Christine Yoo deeply empathetic documentary, 26.2 TO LIFE, tells the story of incarcerated men who are members of the 1000 Mile Club, the prison's long distance running club. They train all year for 26.2 mile long marathon race, all of which takes place inside the walls of the infamous San Quentin Men's Prison mile race. For the men who take their places at the starting line on a cool, sunny November morning, completing the marathon means more than entrée into an elite group of athletes. It's a chance to be defined by more than their crimes. Cheering them on are a small staff of volunteer coaches, veteran marathoners who train with the runners throughout the year. The bonds they forge on the track create a community that transcends prison politics and extends beyond the prison walls as members are released. 26.2 TO LIFE is a story of transformation and second chances. The film offers a rare glimpse into a world out of bounds, as the men navigating life sentences seek redemption and freedom… or something like it. Director Christine Yoo takes us inside the walls, physical and psychological of the men, who readily acknowledge the mistakes and crimes they have committed, work to define the remainder of their lives as positive and worthwhile. It's hard enough to train for a marathon. But what if you could only train in a crowded prison yard, with borrowed running shoes, on a small track with potholes and six 90-degree turns? That's what the members of the San Quentin 1000-Mile Club running group face – on top of the harsh living conditions in California's oldest prison – as they prepare for their annual marathon. A new documentary, 26.2 to Life, goes inside the prison to tell the story of the San Quentin Marathon, its participants, and why they run. Professional runner Vanessa Fraser has raced at the highest levels of her sport, but then found herself in a prolonged phase where things just weren't clicking. So she decided to switch things up–a lot. Which is why Vanessa, along with her coach Shalane Flanagan, decided to put the 100 x 1-mile Nike San Francisco Women's Miler Club World Record Relay attempt on her racing calendar. The event takes place June 3, 2023. Discover how Vanessa got here, and why choosing to run a huge community event with 99 other women became an excellent fit for her process of continuing to compete at the highest levels of her sport. Vanessa Fraser discovered her love of running in the third grade and has raced for the powerhouse collegiate team at Stanford and the prestigious Nike-sponsored professional team, the Bowerman Track Club. Then last year, in 2020, she decided to strike out on her own as a professional runner and forge a more personalized path in the sport. As part of that, Vanessa will be running the kick-off leg of this incredible 100 x 1-mile World Record Relay attempt, which will take place at Cox Stadium at San Francisco State University. The women of the San Francisco Bay Area set this relay record both in 1977 and again in 1997. Then in 1999, the record was reset by the Canadian Women's Miler Club, with a time of 9:23:39: that averages out to 5:37 minutes per mile. The women of the SF Bay Area are ready to take the record back. All of the 100 women on the relay team have ties to the San Francisco Bay Area, and there is a huge age range: from 13 to 63. Qualifications, other than having ties to the SF Bay Area, are, for runners 50 or under, they have to show that they can run a sub-6:00 minute mile; for those 50 or older, it's a sub-8:00 minute mile. An exciting episode of BEHIND THE LENS thanks to documentary director/producer CHRISTINE YOO and director NICOLAS HARVARD. First up, take a listen to my exclusive interview with director NICOLAS HARVARD talking about his feature directorial debut – THE LOCKSMITH. Now, Nicolas is no stranger to film and television having long worked as a 1st Assistant Director and 2nd Unit Director on shows like "Yellowstone" and films like "Wind River", "Chappaquiddick", "The Spectacular Now", and "Rudderless". (Let's face it. You can't do much better today then work and learn from Taylor Sheridan.) But now he steps into the saddle as director and tackles elements of filmmaking he hasn't had to concern himself with before, such as casting, editing and music. It's a terrific conversation as Nicolas gets candid about this experience. And then, director/producer CHRISTINE YOO is live talking about her documentary 26.2 TO LIFE which screened at Santa Barbara International Film Festival, among others. Talk about a powerful, inspiring, and uplifting film! Christine goes behind the walls and barbed wire of San Quentin to show us one of the incredible rehabilitative programs offered to prisoners – The 1000 Mile Club. Honing in on three main inmates with 50+year sentences (although we hear from many more), we learn about the program from Coach Franklin Ruona and then follow Rahsaan Thomas, Tommy Lee Wickerd, and Markelle "The Gazelle" Taylor on their journey to complete a 26.2 mile marathon within the prison while having their eyes on the prize of possible parole and life outside. We get to know these men and you will care about them by film's end. Metaphoric when viewing training for a marathon as compared to their individual journeys at rehab, self-improvement, and redemption, Christine has done an amazing job. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

This traumatic event inspired her son's 5th grade class to organize a 5K road race as a fund raiser. She eventually went on to host the 100 Mile Club at her local school to encourage physical activity among special needs students. Over the course of the school year, children could challenge themselves to cover 100 miles walking and running; a tremendous confidence boost! Nancy would eventually heed the call of the trails and take on ultra distance races herself including, to date, a couple 100 mile runs. The structure and guidance he provides is something many of the inmates are getting for the first time in their lives.     My husband really likes his old trucks.  He is determined to drive his current Chevy Tahoe for a million miles.  While very few car owners make it to the million mile mark, Irv Gordon of Long Island, New York managed to put over three million miles on his 1966 Volvo.  That took a lot of spizzerinctum or the will to win. The automobile was invented in 1886 and the first used car lot showed up in 1897.  In 1924 a new Ford cost around $265 dollars.  The average new car has over 15,000 parts and it takes 6 months to build a Rolls Royce and about 13 hours to build a Toyota.  As far as my husband getting to a million miles, it’s going to be a long road ahead as the truck broke down on a recent trip to Colorado with just 174,000 miles.  Full disclosure when it comes to cars, I am an ultracrepidarian, that’s someone who talks about things of which they know little or nothing!

Kara Lubin is a fourth generation public school teacher from California, a mother to two children, and also maintains a small farm with horses, dogs, and a tortoise named Rachel. We talk with Kara about how Rachel the tortoise is her spirit animal and how she struggled with an unhealthy relationship with running, exercise, and food while growing up. She strives to keep a well balanced and positive outlook on exercise and food as she strives to set an example for her children and others. Kara loves the Born to Run ultra marathons and prides herself in running slow and steady. She shares how she started the 100 Mile Club in 1992 and how her instinct led to developing a program that now reaches over 1.2 million children a year. With the 100 Mile Club, Kara is passionate about using running or other activities to inspire kids, as well as adults, to set a goal, work toward it a little each day, and help others along the way. We talk about a recent partnership 100 Mile Club has with our sponsor Goodr, which has resulted in a beautiful special pair of sunglasses that when purchased, enables two children to benefit from the 100 Mile Club program.
