Project 2025 Will Decapitate Civilian Oversight of the U.S. Military – Mikey Weinstein

The First Amendment guarantees religious freedom and the separation of Church and State, basic tenets of American democracy which conservative think-tank the Heritage Foundation is intent on undermining. Mikey Weinstein, founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, describes how the Heritage Foundation's Project 2025 would upend military protocols to eliminate civilian oversight. He believes a dystopian future in which the rights of racialized and marginalized groups are denied would be in store under a second Trump presidency.  TranscriptListenDonateSubscribeGuestMusic Talia BaroncelliHi, I'm Talia Baroncelli, and you're watching theAnalysis.news. I'll shortly be joined by Mikey Weinstein, the founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation. We'll be speaking about Project 2025 and the implications it has for the U.S. military. If you'd like to support the work that we do, you can go to our website, theAnalysis.news, and hit the donate button at the top right corner of the screen. Make sure you're on our mailing list; that way, you're always up to date every time a new episode is published. You can like and subscribe to the show on YouTube or on other podcast streaming services such as Apple or Spotify. See you in a bit with Mikey. Project 2025 is a lengthy policy agenda authored by the Heritage Foundation, a conservative and Christian nationalist think tank. Investigative outlet ProPublica recently obtained Project 2025 private training videos, which involve several former Trump officials. This corroborates the connection between former President Trump and the Heritage Foundation. One of the videos features Bethany Kozma, a former Deputy Chief of Staff at USAID during the Trump administration. In this video, she discusses Project 2025's opposition to legislation trying to mitigate the effects of climate change. She reads from page 364 of Project 2025's Mandate for Leadership, which states that "In the name of combating climate change, policies have been used to create an artificial energy scarcity that will require trillions of dollars in new investment, supported with taxpayer subsidies, to address a problem that government and special interests themselves created." They don't perceive climate change or carbon-intensive industries as posing a threat to society or to the environment but as a set of policies meant to create energy scarcity and benefit a certain segment of the elite. Joining me to discuss these issues is Mikey Weinstein. He is the founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, which is a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring the constitutional right of religious freedom for the U.S. Armed Forces. He is also a lawyer and a former Air Force officer and served as White House Legal Counsel to the Reagan Administration. He also served as first general counsel to Ross Perot, the Texas billionaire who ran for president twice. He's the author of several books, including Was God on Our Side and No Snowflake in an Avalanche. It's great to have you again, Mikey. Mikey WeinsteinThanks, Talia. I'm looking forward to it as well. Talia BaroncelliBefore we get into Project 2025, can you explain to our viewers what you do at the Military Religious Freedom Foundation? Mikey WeinsteinAbsolutely. We are a weapon, and we've been fighting Christian nationalism and calling it out before anybody else did, that I'm aware of, going back to the early 2000s. Our job is to protect the U.S. Constitutionally mandated wall, separating Church and State in the technologically most lethal organization ever created by humankind, which is the U.S. military: the Marine Corps, Navy, Army, Air Force, and Space Force. We have clients in all 18 national security agencies. Some are well-known, like the FBI, the CIA, the DIA, etc. We have clients in the U.S. Coast Guard, which is not the DOD; that's the Department of Homeland Security, and even the U.S. Maritime Service,

Mikey Weinstein, founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, a non-profit organization, explains why proselytizing in the U.S. military is both dangerous and unconstitutional. Christian nationalist and dominionist ideologies are espoused by high-ranking officers in the military, some of whom are involved in nuclear war and military planning. This highly disturbing reality, Mikey argues, is largely ignored by policymakers. As was reported following the U.S. Capitol attack on January 6th, 2021, an unusually high number of those charged in relation to the attack had a military background, and some of them adhered to radical Christian views.

It's Monday, April 10th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. By Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com) Chinese Mayflower Church landed in America Ready for some wonderful Easter Monday news? On April 4th, The Worldview reported that members of an underground Chinese church, dubbed The Mayflower Church since they have sought religious freedom in South Korea and Thailand, were fearful they were set to be sent back to their hostile homeland. Like the Pilgrims, these 63 Chinese believers left everything behind in search of a place to freely live their faith.  Now, after their 3-year quest for asylum, they arrived in America on Good Friday, thanks to the prayers of Christians worldwide and the financial help of Christian Freedom International, reports The Christian Post. It was a good Friday indeed! Communist Chinese disciple children to reject God Since 2018, China has escalated its crackdown on Christians. Pastors are arrested, sometimes in the middle of services. One pastor was sentenced to five years for trying to print “illegal publications” – meaning the Bible. And Bible texts are reinterpreted to fit Chinese communist propaganda, explains Christian Freedom International. Capturing the hearts and minds of Chinese youth is essential to the communists' plan. Children are banned from attending church. Parents are banned from teaching religion to their children. China's Compulsory Education Law makes homeschooling or private unregistered schools illegal. When Christians in an impoverished region were told to replace pictures of Jesus with posters of Xi Jinping, a Communist Party chairman said, “They think God is their savior. After our cadres' (APPLE CA-dree) work, they'll realize their mistakes and think, ‘We should no longer rely on Jesus, but on the party for help.'” In Exodus 20:2-3, Moses recorded these words. “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.  ‘You shall have no other gods before Me.'” Court banned Abortion Kill Pill On April 7th, a federal judge issued a ruling that will stop the sales of abortion drugs nationwide and possibly save hundreds of thousands or even millions of babies from abortions, reports LifeNews.com. The abortion drug mifepristone is used for more than half of all abortions in the U.S. every year, according to the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute. The FDA has linked mifepristone to at least 28 women's deaths and 4,000 serious complications.   Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk of the Northern District of Texas in Amarillo, a Trump appointee, issued a ruling blocking approval of the dangerous abortion pill. In the case of Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA, he halted Food and Drug Administration approval of the chemical abortion drug mifepristone.  On page 45 of his ruling, he noted that one study revealed the overall incidence of adverse events is “fourfold higher” in chemical abortions when compared to surgical abortions. Women who underwent chemical abortions also experienced far higher rates of hemorrhaging, incomplete abortion, and unplanned surgical evacuation. Plus, the Texas judge ruled that the FDA cannot allow chemical abortion to be prescribed via telemedicine or without an in-person doctor's visit. The Court provides seven days before this order will go into effect to allow the federal government time to appeal to the Fifth Circuit.  Not surprisingly, the Biden Administration filed its notice of appeal the same day. However, just two hours after Kacsmaryk issued his order, Spokane, Washington-based Judge Thomas Rice, an Obama appointee, issued a conflicting Order, reports LifeSiteNews.com. He required the Abortion Kill Pill to remain on the market in the states of Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Vermont, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Michigan and the District of Columbia. Veterans Administration removed cross from Austin clinic Just 19 minutes after the atheist Military Religious Freedom Foundation complained about the presence of a cross at an Austin, Texas Veterans Administration clinic, the Department of Veterans Affairs caved on March 20th, and took the cross down, reports the Washington Times. The metal cross, which incorporated emblems of the military branches, had been affixed to a column in the clinic lobby. It bore the emblems of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard, along with the image of a bugler and the words, “Remember Our Veterans.” The God-hating group said the cross violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, agency regulations and Defense Department rules on the use of the emblems. In a letter to Michael Kiefer, director of the regional Veterans Administration unit, Mikey Weinstein, the agnostic founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, called the cross a “nonsecular display of Christian triumphalism and supremacy.” He claimed the cross caused distress to 19 veterans who “feared just the most horrible type of revenge and retribution” if they had complained directly. Christians must be open to transgender procedures or they can't adopt And finally, the state of Oregon refused to allow a Christian mother of five to adopt two children after she said her religion would not let her take a young minor to receive cross-hormone injections, reports The Daily Signal. Indeed, the Oregon law would prohibit 78% of Americans from adopting children. Jessica Bates has sued five Oregon state employees for adoption guidelines that effectively say, “Conservative Christians need not apply,” according to her legal brief. Oregon state law requires all would-be adoptive parents to “respect, accept and support” the adoptee's professed “sexual orientation, gender identity, [and] gender expression.” Bates said mandatory classes in the state's adoption application process said this included using a child's preferred pronouns, presenting homosexual relationships in a positive light, and taking children who want to pretend to be the opposite sex to get disfiguring transgender procedures. Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train children in the way they should go; when they grow old, they won't depart from it.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Monday, April 10th in the year of our Lord 2023. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. Dom leads off the second hour by bringing to light a complaint levied by a religious freedom organization, who alleges that the placing of Christmas wreaths on the graves of Veterans is in some way offensive. Mikey Weinstein, founder and president of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, said that ‘Christian gang signs' such as wreaths desecrate the graves of Veterans who did not practice Christianity. Giordano offers up solutions and takes calls from listeners who take umbrage with the complaints about what is supposed to be a humble gesture. Then, New Jersey Assemblyman Erik Peterson returns to the Dom Giordano Program. Peterson joined us earlier this month to discuss an incident in Trenton, which saw Republican state legislature defy the Governors orders and seat themselves despite a requirement to show proof of vaccination before entering onto the floor. Yesterday, news broke that the Governor's office has launched an investigation into the incident. First, Giordano asks Peterson for the reasoning behind the investigation, trying to determine what it is in the incident that could be investigated in the first place. Peterson explains that Phil Murphy is being Phil Murphy, using the Goldman Sachs playbook he's often used in a power move to get his way, hoping to use intimidation on the State Police to insure that his overbearing edict is followed. Peterson reveals that the Governor has brought in the National Guard, which he claims is help to get legislators tested for Coronavirus, which shocks Giordano, with Peterson using it as further evidence of threats levied by Murphy to control the populace. In today's News: The Rev. Dr. Ray Halm called to Glory The Rev. Dr. Ray Halm, who served as president of Concordia University, Irvine (CUI), Calif., from 1980 to 1998, died Aug. 4. He was 79. Halm was the longest-serving president of CUI. Before becoming CUI president, he served congregations and schools in Indiana, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Minnesota as an LCMS teacher, administrator and pastor. He also served as vice-chairman of the LCMS Board for Higher Education, a member of the LCMS Blue Ribbon Task Force on Missions, and the Synod’s assistant secretary. Most recently, he acted as senior director of Concordia University Education Network while remaining an active ambassador for CUI. Marines cave to atheists The U.S. Marine Corps scheduled an annual training for military lawyers earlier this month, at which the Battle of Gettysburg would be discussed. The instructor for one portion of that training was supposed to be Jay Lorenzen, an Air Force veteran who taught for 10 years at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. Lorenzen’s biography, provided to the military lawyers in advance of the training, included references to Christianity, including his affiliation with Campus Crusade for Christ, now known as “Cru”, and a couple of religious-themed courses he teaches in his spare time. Several of those lawyers complained to Mikey Weinstein, who heads up a secular, anti-christian group called the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, that Lorenzen was going to teach about religion. That allegation was false, but it didn’t matter. Jeremy Dys of First Liberty Institute said of the situation, “The Marine Corps bravely cancelled a speaker chosen to lead a discussion on the battlefield tactics and leadership lessons of Gettysburg based upon his expertise as a retired military officer and academy professor because that retired officer, in his speaker’s bio, confessed to be religious and associated with a religious organization.” Dismemberment abortion ban upheld Arkansas soon may be allowed to enforce a law to protect unborn babies from brutal dismemberment abortions after a federal appeals court ruled in favor of the state Ariday. The AP reports the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously vacated lower federal court injunction blocking the dismemberment abortion ban and three other pro-life state laws. The 2017 laws include the Arkansas Unborn Child Protection from dismemberment abortion act, which protects nearly fully formed unborn babies from being brutally dismembered alive in the womb. These abortions typically are referred to as Dilation and Evacuation, or D&E, and are common in the second trimester when unborn babies are nearly fully developed. A second law, the Sex Discrimination by Abortion Prohibition Act, protects unborn babies from discriminatory sex-selection abortions. The other two laws involve requiring the remains of aborted babies to be buried or cremated and reporting evidence of the sexual abuse of young girls under 14 to authorities.

In today's News: Groups appeal to the Defense Secretary to protect chaplains First Liberty Institute yesterday sent a letter to Secretary Of Defense Mark Esper to express concern over recent incidents within the U.S. Army that have resulted in unlawful religious discrimination against service members, and to urge the secretary to issue guidance that strongly protects religious freedom within the Department of Defense. First Liberty is joined on the letter by the Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty and the Restore Military Religious Freedom Coalition. Recently, the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, an atheist organization, publicly demanded immediate adverse action against several Army chaplains for carrying out their constitutionally-mandated mission. At Fort Drum, New York, chaplains assigned to the Army’s 10th Mountain Division published a series of videos to a social media site inviting viewers to pray in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic. At Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, another Army chaplain also published a video to social media in which he sought to encourage viewers with a message of hope during difficult times. At Camp Humphreys, South Korea, yet another Army chaplain who sought to offer encouragement and hope sent an email to his fellow Christian chaplains commending to them a christian book he recently read. In each case, the atheist organization demanded the Army censor or discipline the chaplains and the Army complied with the demands. The letter further points out that the Army’s actions in each incident are unlawful. The atheists' demands are based on the flawed notion that military chaplains may not carry out their official duties outside of a religious ceremony that occurs within the four walls of a chapel. Concordia Seminary St. Louis receives 15 awards Concordia Seminary, St. Louis recently received a total of 15 awards from the Associated Church Press and the Evangelical Press Association during the organizations’ recent award ceremonies. You have heard me refer to Mikey Weinstein and his deceptively-named Military Religious Freedom Foundation on this program more than once.  Over the last couple of months, this group of anti-faith activists has certainly shown a dogged resolve to brazenly attack the right of our service members to live out their faith. After the MRFF sent a legal demand to the Department of Defense regarding our client, Shields of Strength, a Christian company that graciously provides replica dog tags with inspirational Bible verses to active-duty service members, veterans and their families who want them, we had to take action.  We’ve now sent two demand letters on the topic—one to the Army and another to the Navy—insisting the DOD respect our client’s religious liberty. But that’s not all.  Before Christmas of 2019, the group complained about an inflatable Santa Claus on an Army base, claiming that the display was unconstitutional because it stood wearing military camouflage, a lapel reading “Christmas Force” and held a small sign with the phrase, “God Bless America.”  Not only that, they also called out the Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, CO for selling Jesus-themed candy canes. These may sound silly, but we can’t risk not taking them seriously.  Just as our service members never give up when fighting for our freedoms, First Liberty will never give up on our mission to fight for their First Freedom. Welcome to episode 8 of the Atheist Aus Podcast. Can you help build the World's Largest Skeptic & Atheist Community Center? United Church of Bacon wants to save Magician Penn Jillette's former home...The Slammer ...and create The Nevatican! Penn is the vocal half of the Las Vegas magic act Penn & Teller and for 20 years, his former home The Slammer has been a retreat of reason in the desert - and the United Church of Bacon wants to keep it that way. They've begun a Indiegogo, with a goal of half a million dollars, to save the building and make it a venue for all the faithless, for events, weddings and meetups. To find out more, I spoke to John Whiteside - he's the Founder and Bacon Prophet of the United Church of Bacon, an advisory board member of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, and an advisory board member of the Secular Policy Institute. Head to the site at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/world-s-largest-skeptic-atheist-community-center/x/8728766#/story ******* Paul Fidalgo is our international correspondent on the show; he is the communications director for the skeptic and humanist organization the Center for Inquiry, where he writes the daily news roundup The Morning Heresy, among a bazillion other things. He blogs at iMortal over on the Patheos network and podcasts with Brian Hogg at www.thinkerypodcast.com. *Jeffrey Tayler at Salon looks at the political landscape, with some troubling polling on Americans' feelings about being a "Christian nation" * A psychic sues New York state for not giving him the reward money he says he deserves for allegedly helping to catch the two prison escapees earlier this year. * This may not be surprising, but research shows that a fearful disposition and belief in the paranormal are closely associated. Ugh, and 41.4% of Americans think ghosts are real. * Ensaf Haidar is reporting that floggings might very soon resume for her husband, Raif Badawi. We've not confirmed this, and as you might know, it's very hard to know exactly what's going on within the Saudi legal and penal systems. He's also been awarded the Sakharov Human Rights Prize! ***** In January, 2016, Think Inc. are bringing to Australia An Evening with Sam Harris. Audiences will be engaged with this most celebrated of critical thinkers on the matters of science, spirituality, and secularisation in an age where their conflict with religion is as amplified as ever. With big thanks to Think Inc, I spoke to Sam Harris about what it's been like since he was last here for the Global Atheist Convention. Get your tickets for the shows in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney at http://thinkinc.org.au/events/samharris. ***** In Australian and AFA forum board news – our correspondent GoldenMane gives us the lowdown on what’s happened this month on the boards. Eighteen active-duty service members there protested nativity scenes and "Merry Christmas" banners in two base cafeterias. Because they were too afraid to speak directly to their higher-ups, fearing retribution because of the base's “religious climate,” they went to the Military Religious Freedom Foundation. The nativity scenes have since beenmoved to the courtyard of the base chapel. Apparently, the displays were set up by foreign contractors who manage the two dining facilities and were "not intended to endorse any religion," a spokeswoman for the commander of the base said in response to the MRFF.

Chris Rodda is the Research Director for The Military Religious Freedom Foundation which is dedicated to ensuring that all members of the United States Armed Forces fully receive the Constitutional guarantees of religious freedom to which they and all Americans are entitled by virtue of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment of the US Constitution. MRFF believes that religious faith is a Constitutionally guaranteed freedom that must never be compromised, except in the most limited of military circumstances, because of its fundamental importance to the preservation of the American nation and the American way of life. We discussed the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, its history and mission, the work that it is doing, and some of the responses that the organization has received.
