Top of mind for both of them: the threat now posed to their centuries-old way of managing this landscape by the energy company EDF, and its plans to create a saltmarsh by the site of nearby Hinkley Point nuclear plant, which is currently under construction. In this episode they discuss: the wildlife in the hams (2m50s); the role of cattle in the ecosystem (7m30s); EDF's plans for the saltmarsh (8m44s); William's reflections on the plans (18m25); and the uneasy relationship between their farming methods and corporate structures (24m05s).Visit the ‘Protect Pawlett Hams' campaign website hereRead the EDF statement in full here Hosted on Acast. On today's episode, we are joined by Wade Shealy. With 40 years in the sector, Wade Shealy is one of America's top leaders in resort real estate development, marketing and sales. In 2010, in response to a market need to help second homeowners realize more value in their ownership, he founded and launched THIRDHOME, the industry's premier luxury property and travel club.  Wade is recognized as the visionary force behind a series of high-profile real estate development projects. Most notably, the purchase, vision and development of Hampton Island, Georgia, an exemplary coastal community with one of the lowest impacts on the surrounding environment.  Hampton Island, a 4,000-acre private community off the Georgia coast, was cited in Robb Report's “Best of the Best” as one of the top three private communities in North America. Hampton Island became the second home to Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, along with Robert and Lydia Mondavi, among other high-profile residents. The Hampton Island development was featured in numerous publications and won national awards for architecture and design.  Wade graduated from the University of Georgia equipped for his future with far more than an Honors degree. Working for straight commission, 80 hours a week with the Southwestern Company selling bibles and educational books door-to-door, prepared him early on for many years ahead of entrepreneurial leadership.  As a college student, Wade rose through the ranks to become one of the organization's top salespeople, along the way recruiting both the largest student team and the team selling the most volume, in Southwestern's 155-year history. As a District Sales Manager, he was named “District Sales Manager of the Year” for each of his four consecutive years in that role.  In 1984, Wade began working in resort real estate, co-founding The Pinnacle Group in 1986 and growing it into one of the largest and most successful real estate companies on Hilton Head Island and the state of South Carolina.  As Vice President of Intrawest, a premier North American mountain resort and adventure company, Wade directed sales and marketing for 12 different resorts with locations from New England to the Caribbean, successfully closing over $500 million in sales, annually. During his years in resort real estate, he developed and sold more than $3 billion in real estate.  Wade has been featured in national and international publications, most notably the Wall Street Journal and Los Angeles Times. He also enjoys returning to his alma mater, the University of Georgia, as a frequent lecturer at the Business School, as well as to the College of Environment and Design in Landscape Architecture.  Wade was instrumental in the creation of the Land Conservation Program for the State of Georgia and subsequently appointed by the Governor of Georgia, to the State Board of Land Conservation, serving for five years. Under Wade's direction, tens of thousands of acres of pristine land were protected. He was also appointed to the state's Marshland and Wetlands Protection Committee and voted the “Tree Friendly Developer” for the state of Georgia.  Wade lives on a horse farm outside Nashville in Franklin, Tennessee. Besides his horses, Wade also raises bees and chickens. Inspired by his early background in nature preservation, he designed and built a natural swimming pond on his farm, one of the first of its kind in the U.S. Wade has three children, his youngest attends Arizona State University, his daughter lives in Greenville SC and is an entrepreneur with a very successful Medical Spa, and his oldest son is a Professor of Sustainable Civil Engineering at Virginia Tech. The Paracast -- The Gold Standard of Paranormal Radio

Take a trip through modern folklore, strange experiences and the legends and myths of advanced ancient civilizations with special guest Gareth Rees. Speaking with Gene and cohost Tim Swartz, you'll discover how modern myths and folklore of place have always driven Gareth's writing and he has contributed weird fiction and horror stories to numerous anthologies. His new book is “Sunken Lands: a Journey Through Lost Kingdoms and Flooded Worlds,” published by Elliott & Thompson. It's an exploration of lost worlds, starting in the UK, then going out to the Bay of Naples and the Louisiana wetlands. It is about how folklore and mythology cling to places and carry messages from the deep past in a time of climate change. Gareth's first book was “Marshland,” about a deep map of a semi-rural former industrial edgeland in the middle of London, blending factual writing with weird fiction. His second book, “The Stone Tide,” is an autobiographical work about Hastings on the East Sussex coast, where he wrote about the mavericks who have gravitated there: Aleister Crowley, John Logie Baird, Alex Sanders, Teilhard De Chardin. “Car Park Life,” his third book, is about parking lots, where he explores the boring spaces around chain stores, superstores, retail parks. Even though there's nothing really paranormal in it, the process of extracting meaning from the mundane could be described as magical.

As the planet warms, we're experiencing more frequent and destructive extreme weather. Yet, 85% of the world lacks critical atmospheric data for precise forecasting that could help us better prepare. John Dean and Kai Marshland, Co-Founders of WindBorne Systems, are on a mission to close this gap. Born out of the Stanford Student Space Initiative, WindBorne began as a project to extend the flight duration of conventional weather balloons. Realizing the impact of their technology on climate change, they turned their project into a venture-backed startup serving both private and government partners like NOAA and the U.S. Air Force. John and Kai share how WindBorne deploys a global constellation of autonomous, navigable, AI-powered balloons that fly longer, are more sustainable, and collect more real-time measurements than standard balloons. Their data is fed into powerful AI models to create the world's most accurate forecasts – better than Google DeepMind's GraphCast – unlocking the potential to improve disaster preparedness and climate resilience worldwide.Show notes, episodes, and more at thenextgreatthingpodcast.com. Starting a business in your apartment or dorm room is something Hollywood makes movies about. For our guest this week, Matthew Valiollahi, that was his reality. In college he noticed there was a need for a southern brand that was elegant and eye catching. While attending undergraduate and law school he had this vision of creating a clothing brand that captured the essence of living in the south. Initially starting out as a T-Shirt company, Southern Marsh has quickly evolved to become a brand widely recognized by all to capture the flair of life in the south. Through trials and tribulations, MOQs and recalls, Southern Marsh has perfected the system of creating new lines in time for each and every season. From the early days of that one store owner who gave them a shot, to having a store of their own, this dream has become a reality. Thank you everyone for your continued support of the show and being with us for 130 episodes so far. We have no intentions of slowing down and are always looking for that next entrepreneur to share their journey thus far. By combining conventional wastewater treatment to natural wetlands, the city has created habitat homes and migratory resting places for over 300 species of birds, including many shorebirds.  Learn more at BirdNote.org.

Lisa and Amy finish their discussion of The Marshland Mystery in this Trixie Belden episode. 18-year-old reporter, Paul Trent, has a bone to pick with Trixie and the BWGs. He’s determined to destroy Trixie’s reputation as Sleepyside’s best resident detective. If that weren’t enough, Trixie still has to play matchmaker to Bobby & Gaye, organize an antique sale, and stop the city council from forcing Miss Rachael into a nursing home. As always, only some of the following questions will be answered: Who’s Emily? What happened to the surly men digging up Miss Rachael’s garden? Will Gaye ever be able to live the life she truly wants? Why does a bit of rain keep the entire town from showing up at an indoor antique sale?In Lisa’s ender, you’re invited to the most politically incorrect party yet. Welcome to book #10 of the Trixie Belden series: The Marshland Mystery!  A child violinist has come to town and wreaks havoc in Sleepyside. With behavioral issues worse than Bobby’s (which is debatable), she’s got everyone hopping to attention with her demands. Trixie and Honey are determined to gather samples at a nearby swamp, but find themselves immersed in a mystery of sorts. Who is the old lady with the pointed-toed shoes? Where is Bobby’s bike? Can Bobby suck his thumb and get a girlfriend at the same time? Listen to Amy and Lisa dissect the multiple mysteries that Trixie finds herself juggling. In Lisa’s ender, it’s back to 1940’s party time. The suggested games for an April Fools party will have you thanking your past party hosts (hopefully) for not inflicting this sort of humiliation upon you. As both take place in the 80's and involves heavily influenced political background, we wanted to explore the similarities with the Asian true crime story and the Spanish southern murder case. This week, Danny leapt aboard the Amy Schumer rom-com Trainwreck and Sam snuck a peek at indie hit The Diary of a Teenage Girl, two films that promised them the insights into women they so desperately need despite years spent carefully collecting the What I'm Really Thinking columns in the Guardian. They compared notes and it turns out women have sex and get drunk a lot. Interesting. Sam also ventured into the Spanish noir Marshland, a decidedly male-focused film that promised him the insights into men he so desperately needs despite years spent being one himself. Turns out men solve crimes a lot? When not learning deep shit about gender, the pair of chatters discussed what Dolph Lundgren might get up to as the next Kindergarten Cop, whether we'll see more werewolves (not swearwolves) in a mooted sequel to What We Do in the Shadows, and why Tim Burton picked the wrong name from the Beetlejuice Rolodex when he made Batman. Koko the Showfucker is back and he's prepared to fuck the show right into--well, okay, a little of that happens, but for the most part, Jason Tabrys' return to Gobbledygeek is a little more focused than normal. Among the topics discussed are the Veronica Mars movie and its abundance of fan-service, the Cosmos controversy, and the fact that Captain America 3 and Batman & Superman: Friendship Is Magic opening on the same day is going to keep the idiotic flames of the Marvel/DC fan war raging long into the night. Then there's the big one: When you hate something--say, oh, The Big Bang Theory--is it fair to continue harshly criticizing it on social media even when you know someone who likes it? The (different, conflicting) answer(s) may surprise you (or not)! Next: you might remember the Four Color Flashback series AJ did on the blog about the Claremont/Byrne Uncanny X-Men, or he and Paul dissecting Preacher. Well, we're bringing that feature to the show starting next week. At the end of each month, we'll be discussing one volume of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, and spoiler alert: Paul and AJ really, really love this comic. Joining us for this introductory episode is Broken Magic author, The Deli Counter of Justice co-editor, and Brony for life Eric Sipple.
