In this episode, NBN host Hollay Ghadery chops it up with poet Rob Winger about his collection, It Doesn't Matter What We Meant by Rob Winger (McClelland & Stewart, 2021). This is an astonishing collection of poems that question perception, meaning, and context. How does private thinking align with public action? And what might it mean to intend something anyhow? To name our particulars? To translate from the personal to the communal, the pedestrian to the universal? In Rob Winger's new collection of poetry, such questions are less a circulatory system--heart and lungs and blood--than a ribcage, a structure that protects the parts that matter most. "I'd like to think," Winger writes, "it doesn't matter / what we meant." But is that right? Could it ever be? Partly an investigation of system versus system error, It Doesn't Matter What We Meant asks us to own up to our own inherited contexts, our own luck or misfortune, our own ways of moving through each weekday. From meditations on sleepy wind turbines to Voyager 1's dormant thrusters, from country road culverts to the factory floor's punch clock, from allied English-to-English folkloric translations to the crumbling limestone of misremembered basements, this is poetry that complicates what it means to live within and beyond the languages, lexicons, and locations around us. About Rob Winger: ROB WINGER is the author of three previous collections of poetry, including Muybridge's Horse, a Globe and Mail Best Book and CBC Literary Award winner shortlisted for the Governor General's Literary Award, Trillium Book Award for Poetry, and Ottawa Book Award. He lives in the hills northeast of Toronto, where he teaches at Trent University. About Hollay Ghadery: Hollay Ghadery is an Iranian-Canadian multi-genre writer living in Ontario on Anishinaabe land. She has her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Guelph. Fuse, her memoir of mixed-race identity and mental health, was released by Guernica Editions in 2021 and won the 2023 Canadian Bookclub Award for Nonfiction/Memoir. In 1874, the father of motion pictures stood trial for murder. Most people know Eadweard Muybridge as a pioneering photographer and inventor whose work sparked the birth of movies. But Muybridge had a dark side: he was once accused on murdering his wife's lover. Would a Western jury, comfortable with the idea of taking justice into one's own hands, let Muybridge get away with it?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Claudia Pfeiffer is the Deputy Director & Head Curator of the National Sporting Library & Museum in Middleburg, Virginia. We begin on their recent exhibition about the art of the dog collar: a haunting cast from the eruption of Vesuvius; an ancient "Beware of Dog" mosaic; spiked collars & regal collars. Claudia describes some of the most striking paintings from the exhibition: a theatrical Amsterdam dog market; a mastiff baying a poacher; a lion hunt; & an allegory about the father of cynicism. From there we switch from dogs to horses and hear about their anatomy & movement as captured by art, including Muybridge's famous horse photographs. To wrap up this dog-lover & art history-lover episode, Claudia tells the lore of Barry the St. Bernard and his iconic barrel flask. Imagine if a terrible accident turned you into an overnight genius. For those who experience Acquired Savant Syndrome (ASS, seriously) this "gift" can sometimes come with a cost. Also naked tennis. We'll explain.
The Bay Area's fascination with technology didn't start with Silicon Valley. In the late 19th century, San Franciscan Eadweard Muybridge, an eccentric, misanthropic murderer became the first person to capture motion on film. At the time, Muybridge was a well-known photographer whose moody images of Yosemite Valley stood out from the conventional landscape photographs of the time. Because Muybridge was known as an inventor and innovator, Leland Stanford approached him about trying to photograph his horse in motion. Those images of a horse galloping at speed revolutionized photography. We'll talk about Muybridge and how his inventiveness with camera and film laid the groundwork for how we see and record the world today. Guests: Rebecca Solnit, author & essayist - Solnit is the author of "River of Shadows: Eadweard Muybridge and the Technological Wild West" as well as "Orwell's Roses," "Recollection of My Nonexistence," "Whose Story is This: Old Conflicts, New Chapters," and "Drowned River: The Death and Rebirth of Glen Canyon on the Colorado," among other works.

Jason talks about various aspects of Korea, the Korean culture, movies (both Korean and international), music, life, travelling & more. Like the #KDOC14 documentary project itself, this too is a work in progress. Over time it will evolve... be this in format or from an audio to a visual podcast.Note: "F. L. I. C. K. S." is the new name for what was known as "Jason Verney's PLODCAST". Previous potential comic titles for this podcast were Prodcast*, Probcast** and Oddcast*** but the original name of "Plodcast" was used. * To represent 'still in Production'** For either 'Problematic' or 'Probably'*** Simply because it's all kind of 'Odd'PLODCAST, although probably in existent by other broadcasters, was thought most apt... Not so much due to the fact that the podcast itself is slow, plodding or boring (well, you can be the judge of that!) but indicating that the Korean documentary, and other filmic projects are slowly, but surely on their way!"F. L. I. C. K. S." was more recently thought of a more memorable and relevant name & not only indicates that it's related to movies but also spells out what else it covers: Films; Life; Interviews; Camera; Korea; Sounds. “He's not a dusty antique from the past; he's the beginning of now” That's how Marc Shaffer describes the subject of his film, Exposing Muybridge. Mike and Marc explore the strange and varied career of Eadweard Muybridge (just one of the many versions of the name he gave himself over the years). Born in Britain, he moved to New York to sell books, and then to San Francisco to become an early photographer of the American West as well as its native inhabitants. He then had the fortune (both good and mis-) to garner Leland Stanford, rail tycoon and Californian politician, as a patron. He started with photographs of Stanford's family, but then moved on to the series of pictures that would make him a known worldwide: Proving the long-argued notion that at some point in full gallop, all 4 of a horse's hooves leave the ground. Disavowed by Leland Stanford just as he was about to be honored by the Royal Society of his home country, Muybridge returned to America and supported by the likes of painter Thomas Eakins, took up residency at The University of Pennsylvania. Here he continued his motion studies, but as Shaffer and his experts demonstrate, in a manner that revealed as much about the mores and prejudices of his day as they do about the nature of motion. Aided by the exemplary explanatory mode of none other than Muybridge fan and collector Gary Oldman, Schaffer reveals much about Muybridge's life, technique, and art. And he demonstrates the impact on our culture from Francis Bacon, to The Matrix, to Jordan Peele. “Exposing Muybridge” screenings at the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival Monday, May 9 | 4:40 PM | The Main Tuesday, May 10 | 1:45 PM | The Main Friday, May 13 | 1:50 PM | The Main For more information about the Festival, go to: https://mspfilm.org/festivals/mspiff/ Hidden Gem: Hearts of Darkness

Corinna surprises Nina with a spontaneous “Fresh Air”-style interview about Apocalypse Animated, her just-completed project. They discuss hairy Semites, the Whore of Babylon, vaginal symbolism of the New Jerusalem, depicting fire, tesseracts, a cute Lamb, galloping horses, and Corinna's new career as an activist. Corinna has now testified twice in favor of Indiana House Bill 1041, which seeks to prohibit boys from girls' school athletics teams. Does Corinna's voice carry more authority as a transsexual? Unfortunately yes, because even though we all know tokenism is unfair and wrong, it is the coin of the identity politics realm. In a conversation that ranges from references to Muybridge and Audubon, Poe and Hawthorne, Whitman and Thoreau, environmental humanities and biopolitics, presentation and representation, capture and captivity, (with a cameo from Sylvester Graham of the Graham cracker), Antoine Traisnel (author of CAPTURE) joins Michelle Neely (author of AGAINST SUSTAINABILITY) in a lively and rigorous discussion. Traisnel is assistant professor of English and comparative literature at the University of Michigan. Neely is associate professor of English at Connecticut College. This conversation was recorded in March 2021. Steven Sebring is an artist, photographer & inventor. This is a guy who's invented new technology and advanced the art of photography with the tools that he's built in a world-class fashion. By his own admission, he is not a technical guy, but when you see what he's built, you're going to be blown away. There's nothing else in the world like it. There's a lot of work going on to develop new kinds of capture systems for virtual reality that work in 360° environments. Steven came at it from a completely different angle and came up with a completely different solution. He is putting out the most incredible content that works in 3D and in virtual reality on the planet. No one's paralleled what he's doing as far as I've seen. You really want to understand Steven and his thought process, and that's really what we're getting into in this episode. I want you to be able to see how an inventor thinks when they're trying to solve a problem that they understand. We have a lot of situations in technology where we're building a solution without really understanding the problem or the user whose going to be interacting with it. So, this is an amazing opportunity to get to know an inventor. I don't think Steven has ever done a podcast before. He rarely ever talks about what he's working on. He's known to industry insiders in fashion. He's shot a lot of celebrities. He goes way back with Patti Smith. He's done cool documentaries and film and all kinds of artwork with her. And he's shot some of the biggest brands on earth and the camera system he built is unlike anything else. So, anyway, I want you to get in here and understand Steven. We talk about his projects for Donna Karan, Ralph Laureen, BMW, and Spin Magazine. He just has all kinds of commercial work that he's done. He's also a guy who has worked on art projects, that if you have any interest in art, you're going to want to learn about his Muybridge interpretation that he's done. I met Steven a couple of years ago when he was doing this groundbreaking project called LIMINAL with Rodney Mullen. Rodney introduced us and we've been friends ever since. I cannot wait for you guys to see this stuff. This episode, you're going to have to go to the website jetpackforthemind.com to look at the Steven Sebring episode. I'm going to post all kinds of cool stuff that Steven has created. There's a music videos in there with Jack White. There's all kinds of film and video projects that they've done with the camera system. There's a lot to explore and I think you guys are going to be really impressed with what's going on. (more…)
