My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Robert Blake Whitehill, author of the book Deadrise. Robert was born into a Quaker family in Mardela Springs, just outside Salisbury on Maryland's Eastern Shore peninsula. He grew up sailing the Chesapeake Bay, and one of her most beautiful tributaries, the Chester River. After graduating from Westtown School, Whitehill stayed in Pennsylvania to earn his B.A. in creative writing at Haverford and Bryn Mawr Colleges. Later he trained as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, and at The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City. He is the author of the award-winning, critically acclaimed, multi-category, international Kindle bestselling Ben Blackshaw thrillers, which currently has six titles, and audiobooks in the works in German and English. Whitehill lives in New Jersey with his wife and son. When he wasn't sailing, or knocking around the sky in a Cessna 152, Whitehill published several articles about his home waters in Chesapeake Bay Magazine. He is also the managing partner of Calaveras Media LLC, a feature film and television development company. He is a member of SAG-AFTRA, International Thriller Writers, GPA Aviation Club, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and served for a number of years as an EMT-B with the Montclair Ambulance Unit.   In my book review, I stated Deadrise, a thriller, is Book #1 in The Ben Blackshaw Series. If you love a Tom Clancy kind of novel, then you will love this series. We meet Ben underwater - clamming in the Chesapeake Bay near Smith Island. However, instead of finding clams, he finds a sunken boat, 19 boxes of gold bouillon, a dirty bomb, and his dead father - a man he hasn't seen in 15 years. His clamming partner, Knocker Ellis, isn't as surprised as he should be, nor are the other inhabitants of the island. When Maynard Chalk learns his deal has gone sour, and that Ben's father is to blame, he comes to the island to get his money and the bomb - but Ben has other plans. I loved Robert's characters, and especially loved that Smith Island with all her quirky inhabitants was as much of a characters as Ben. If you love a good thriller with all the twists and turns, and great characters, then you will want to read Deadrise.  Purchase Deadrise on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/48Z8iAr Kindle: https://amzn.to/48Z8iAr     Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Robert Blake Whitehill Website: www.robertblakewhitehill.com X: @rbwhitehill IG: @robertblakewhitehill FB: @Robert Blake Whitehill Bluesky: @rbwhitehill   Purchase Deadrise on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/48Z8iAr Ebook: https://amzn.to/48Z8iAr   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   #robertblakewhitehill #deadrise #thriller #terimbrownauthor #authorpodcast #onlineforauthors #characterdriven #researchjunkie #awardwinningauthor #podcasthost #podcast #readerpodcast #bookpodcast #writerpodcast #author #books #goodreads #bookclub #fiction #writer #bookreview *As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to Rachel Pollack, daughter of Director, Actor, Producer Sydney Pollack. You might remember some of the rather small films Sydney Pollack directed like Out of Africa, The Firm, Three Days of the Condor, Electric Horseman, The Way We Were or perhaps you remember him acting (and directing as well) in movies and television shows like Tootsie, The Sopranos, Will and Grace, The Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock Presents and other obscure productions. Oh right, Sydney Pollack also won an Oscar, an Emmy and his films have been nominated form a total of 48 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Out of Africa. Rachel lets us in on life with dad (and mum Claire Griswold) who cooked more than they went out for dinner, who once came to her to ask who Dave Matthews was before a meeting, whose love of flying was where he was happiest and his 24 hour prep to make his famous ribs. We take a deep dive into the basis of his entire career in show business from his years studying at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theater in New York with the legendary acting teacher Stanley Miesner which led him to Broadway acting with both Zero Mostel & Tyrone Power, a Playhouse 90 episode directed by John Frankenheimer which led him to Hollywood as a vocal coach and how the advice of Burt Lancaster got him to direct his first film. It's a fascinating episode for all that and the wonderful antidote from Rachel that the more famous the actor, the less attention she paid to them. Take that Tom Cruise! Everyone has a story on this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast.

What is your biggest failure in life? Did it stop or help your art? Actor/Writer/Director Laura Adamo is joining the conversation on Cue to Cue this week to share how the failures and pain she experienced in the past allowed her to hone her creative process. She reminds us that we can fail spectacularly because at some point in our lives, it will be a part of the key in unlocking the next step of our journey into something great. What do you do when you’re forced to face the unknown? When was the last time you learned something new and stepped outside of your comfort zone? Take a leap of faith! Laura reiterates that creativity requires us to lean into vulnerability instead of running away from it. Have the courage to have an open heart and move authentically through the world. Be the best version of yourself and don’t let your past define your future. In this episode: How taking the director’s hat became the greatest gift she gave her actor self. The importance of having an open heart in your creative process. How to discern which criticism you should listen to. The dynamics of balancing the business and creative side in directing a movie. How a series of painful events inspired her to create “The Wishing Tree” movie. Born and raised in New York City, Lenny attended Midtown West School, a performance and art based elementary school in Manhattan however, acting didn't become an interest of his until a few years later when he took an improv class as a high school elective. Eventually, Lenny began taking liberal arts classes and joined Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theater which he says, “shot him out of the cannon”. In 2016, after spending many years studying his craft under James Brill and performing in local theater, Lenny signed with an agent and landed his television role as a Costar in USA's Falling Water just a month later. Lenny has since gone on to book several television and film projects including: The Breaks (VH1), I Am Homicide (Investigation Discovery), The Blacklist (NBC), The Things In Between, and The Dark Room (shorts), to name a few. To date, booking Ruthless is one of Lenny's most rewarding moments as an actor as it was done entirely through self-tape. The whole experience was a whirlwind and adrenaline rush as he booked the role on a Thursday, had his bags packed and headed to Atlanta on Sunday and was shooting by the following Wednesday. Lenny's favorite part of playing the menacing character is having the opportunity to tell the story of someone who had the opportunity to redeem themselves, but instead chose not to and is now paying the price. Lenny also stars in the comedy short, Puppet Seizure, as well as the independent thriller, Blood Conscious, both set to be released this year. In his free time, Lenny enjoys sharpening his cinematography skills and creating fun, engaging content with fellow actors and friends. He leans to video games and yoga to clear his mind and is in the process of developing and recording his first motivational podcast. Lenny currently resides in Atlanta, GA. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theactorslounge/support

SO-FLO ROOTSTodd was born in Hollywood, Florida and, although he excelled in sports, the craft of acting came most naturally to him. When he wasn't playing baseball, football or studying martial arts, he and his friends would re-enact scenes from their favorite movies (Jaws and Willy Wonka were frequent choices). In his senior year of high school, Todd was drafted from the football team into the Theater program, starring in the school play and winning district improv competitions. He entered Vanderbilt University on the pre-law track, but soon became more interested in the school's theater program, which included one of the best-equipped true black box theaters in the country. He performed in 13 plays at Vandy, and graduated with a hunger to learn more about acting.SEEKING CHOPSA year after graduating college, Todd headed to New York to attend The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater. The Playhouse had been rated the #1 Acting Program in the U.S. by the Cambridge University Press, and Sanford Meisner's program had the reputation of being one of the toughest in the country. Only 75 students were accepted into the program; and of those, just 24 were invited back to complete the second year. Todd figured, if he could make it there, he could make it anywhere... but did he have the chops? The answer came quickly. At the end of his first year at the Playhouse, Todd was offered a role in the Second-Year Production - the only first-year student to be given such an honor. He was invited back to complete the second year, and he's proud to wear badge of a Neighborhood Playhouse Graduate!CHANGE OF LOCATIONAfter graduating from the Playhouse, Todd moved to Los Angeles with some friends from school, and began trying to navigate the entertainment industry. Just as he was beginning to see some success in L.A., Todd and his family experienced a terrible loss: his brother was killed in a car accident, and Todd moved back to Florida to be with his family. Determined to make the best of his new situation, he explored the film industry in Florida and quickly hooked up with Ryan Connolly, founder of Triune Films and creator of the Film Riot web series. Together, they have made several films and sketches, and their relationship continues to grow.CLIMBING THE LADDERTodd has become one of the most sought-after actors and producers in the low-budget indie film industry. He has starred in and produced film projects across the country in Florida, Georgia, Texas, New Jersey, Tennessee and California. His films can now be seen on Amazon, Netflix, OnDemand, Redbox and in 13 countries around the world. Albee Foundation (Montauk, NY) and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (Amherst, VA). That Melora’s work depicts the dramatic and mines the psychological is no surprise since she is also a professional actor and performance artist. Griffis is also a graduate of The Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre in New York City and has worked extensively in theatre, television, and film. After starring in the feature film blessing, (Sundance Film Festival Spirit Award) with her father Guy Griffis, she moved to Los Angeles, where she attended The Santa Monica College of Design, Art, and Architecture’s mentor program. Melora has written, designed, choreographed/directed, and performed in over a dozen performance art works in New York City and abroad. She visits similar themes that inhabit her painting in her performance work and writing. Doug McClemont, Linda Yablonsky, and the late Robert Long, have written about her work which is psychologically charged and dedicated to authentic expression, drawing on intimate and universal concepts. Griffis’ figurative works lean toward abstraction encouraging the viewer to engage with her paintings prismatically. Melora makes oil paintings as well as mixed media works, both flat and sculptural, that combine found textiles pieced together with intentionally uneven hand stitching in various colored threads. Alluding at once to the fragility of loss and the subsequent process of grieving, it proposes a kind of celebratory mending. Griffis states, "an inherent, intuitive occupancy of an interior psychological world exists [in my work], and I trust in the gravity of the personal paralleling public import." Just as a play pulls back the curtain on a particular physical and psychological locus through set and character, Griffis' work animates the canvas with a similar appetite. Critic Doug McClemont says, "With their (...) dramatic use of color, Griffis' works convey the impression that memories and retellings can be strangely cloaked and yet, nevertheless, poignant." Delving into our shared humanity, Griffis' energetic paintings are personal, provoking an emotional response in her pursuit of truth. Melora lives and works in New York City. How we present our ideas affects the audience's reactions. When presented poorly creative ideas get shot down or ignored. In this episode, you'll learn a five-step process that will lead to effective presentations. The steps apply to simple, informal presentations or high-stakes keynotes. Whatever the context, former actor Jack Hannibal shares how to design and deliver presentations so you can get the results you want. What You'll Learn How you can design your presentations to get positive responses from your audience The five step model to present your creative ideas The three most common hurdles in delivering presentations About Jack Hannibal A professional actor since childhood and teacher of acting for over 20 years, Jack knows firsthand what it takes to command a room with authenticity and presence. He is also good at showing others how to do the same. Jack is a graduate of the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City where he studied acting under Sanford Meisner. He has performed on and off-Broadway and has appeared in numerous TV programs and commercials. In Los Angeles, he taught acting privately and at UCLA Extension. Jack holds a BA from Sarah Lawrence College and a Master's in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University. He lives with his wife in Asheville, NC, where he maintains a private psychotherapy practice and is on the teaching staff at Asheville Insight Meditation. Jack's extensive experience as a performer, teacher of acting, psychotherapist, and meditation teacher, makes him a presentation coach second to none. His clients include: Children's Hospital Foundation, Twentieth Century Fox, Fox Sports West, Fox Big Ten, MGM Studios, Sony Pictures, Sony Electronics, Panasonic Avionics, Parsons Engineering, GemStar TVGuide, Quest Diagnostics, The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles, and The Martin Agency. Resources Presentation and Presence Website Jack Hannibal's website The Weekly Challenge Jack offers two challenges for the week. The first is to get out and speak as much as possible. The more presentations you do the more comfortable you will be. Look for opportunities through Toastmasters or your local library, take an Improv or acting class, or share a story at an open mic event. The second challenge is to pay attention to the way the people in your life tell stories.  Notice what works and what doesn't. See if you can start to notice their underlying structure.  Ask yourself, who was the protagonist in that story?  What were they after?  What obstacles did they overcome? What was the point of the story?  In addition, pay attention to the way the storyteller spoke.  How did they use their hands and body to enhance or diminish your experience of the story? Look for how the speaker married expositional information (data) with dramatic narrative.  Were you able to “see” the situation they told you about or not?  Feel free to share your insights in the comment section below. We'd love to hear from you!
