My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Robert Blake Whitehill, author of the book Deadrise. Robert was born into a Quaker family in Mardela Springs, just outside Salisbury on Maryland's Eastern Shore peninsula. He grew up sailing the Chesapeake Bay, and one of her most beautiful tributaries, the Chester River. After graduating from Westtown School, Whitehill stayed in Pennsylvania to earn his B.A. in creative writing at Haverford and Bryn Mawr Colleges. Later he trained as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, and at The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City. He is the author of the award-winning, critically acclaimed, multi-category, international Kindle bestselling Ben Blackshaw thrillers, which currently has six titles, and audiobooks in the works in German and English. Whitehill lives in New Jersey with his wife and son. When he wasn't sailing, or knocking around the sky in a Cessna 152, Whitehill published several articles about his home waters in Chesapeake Bay Magazine. He is also the managing partner of Calaveras Media LLC, a feature film and television development company. He is a member of SAG-AFTRA, International Thriller Writers, GPA Aviation Club, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and served for a number of years as an EMT-B with the Montclair Ambulance Unit. In my book review, I stated Deadrise, a thriller, is Book #1 in The Ben Blackshaw Series. If you love a Tom Clancy kind of novel, then you will love this series. We meet Ben underwater - clamming in the Chesapeake Bay near Smith Island. However, instead of finding clams, he finds a sunken boat, 19 boxes of gold bouillon, a dirty bomb, and his dead father - a man he hasn't seen in 15 years. His clamming partner, Knocker Ellis, isn't as surprised as he should be, nor are the other inhabitants of the island. When Maynard Chalk learns his deal has gone sour, and that Ben's father is to blame, he comes to the island to get his money and the bomb - but Ben has other plans. I loved Robert's characters, and especially loved that Smith Island with all her quirky inhabitants was as much of a characters as Ben. If you love a good thriller with all the twists and turns, and great characters, then you will want to read Deadrise. The conversation highlights the importance of networking, continuous learning, and passion in pursuing an aviation career. Sound Bites "Every time I fly, I remember that point where I was taking off into my Discovery flight. It's just like, it's a blessing." - Kala Bailey "It's the best job in the world. I love my job. Every day, it's not like going to work. It's what I go to do to have fun." - James, Southwest Airlines pilot "I would find every opportunity you can to fly, whether you're actually flying or you're riding with someone, get in airplanes, meet people, network, and every opportunity you get a chance to log an hour, build your time." - James "When I was in that plane, every other career seemed mediocre. I knew I wanted to be a pilot." - Kala Bailey Takeaways: Scholarships and volunteer work can significantly support aspiring pilots in their training journey. Networking and community involvement are crucial for career advancement in aviation. Continuous learning and seizing every opportunity to fly are essential for skill development and career progression. This is Part 2 of a 2-part interview I did with Anna Meredith. Her husband, Adam, checked into the hospital on September 5th, 2023 for routine procedures. Just two days later she received a call that she never expected. “I'm so sorry, Mrs. Meredith…it appears your husband has had a stroke, and he has passed away.” In this true story of Adam's call to Heaven and back, he and Anna recall their experiences from opposite sides of eternity. As Anna processes the biggest heartbreak in her life, Adam wrestles with his greatest questions about his faith and trust in God. In sixty unresponsive minutes, Adam finds his belief and faith have turned to knowledge, and he will never be the same again. There is a profound message in this conversation, and I know you'll enjoy it. So sit back and listen in as Anna Meredith shares her story! ------------------- Adam Provost Meredith was a devout man of faith, dedicated family man, brilliant entrepreneur, and loyal friend. He had an endless vault of talents and passions which he selflessly shared, particularly in his leadership role at Celebrate Recovery ministry. Adam began his education at the University of Colorado, earning his undergrad in Political Science and Economics. In 1999, after earning his MBA/MSF in International Business from Boston College, Adam began his banking career at Eastern Bank. Soon after, his passion for cars inspired him to co-found the automotive distributor TJM Motorsport in Concord, NH. He also held a passion for flying which landed him a job as a senior lender at Santander's Aircraft Lending Group in Manchester, NH. He was then recruited by Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association in 2013 to form a new member services group as President of AOPA Finance, where he helped it grow to the largest aircraft financing broker in the nation. He proudly represented AOPA as a board member of National Aircraft Finance Association for two terms from 2015 -2021. Adam was a man dedicated to his family, including his wife, Anna Irena Meredith, and his sons, Donald Provost (15), and Karl Herbst (14). He was a beacon of faith, family, ambition, courage, love, and resilience, and his gentle personality continues to resonate within the hearts of everyone he encountered. On December 11, 2023, he peacefully returned to his Maker after a fierce three-year battle with cancer. Love God, live in the moment, have no regrets, and do not be afraid to follow your dreams. This is the legacy Adam Provost Meredith is forever leaving behind. ---------------- Gone for 60 Minutes: How My Near Death Experience Took Me From Believing to Knowing is available now on Amazon.

I know I'm not alone when I share the fact that I get a high level of anxiety when getting on a plane. I'm a control freak at heart and HATE being the passenger in any vehicle and this feeling's at it's most when traveling by air and in a tin tube held up by physics that they actually can't quite explain but know it works because planes stay up in the air and don't fall out of the sky. This week I had the opportunity to speak to Captain Cameron Tribe as he shared his tales of travel and what it's like to be a commercial airline pilot. Cameron also went into detail and answered all of those questions we anxiety ridden, control freaks want to know about flying and whether it truly is one of the safest ways to get around. I'd like to thank Cameron for coming on the show and for sharing his incredible knowledge of flight and commercial airlines and I hope that this podcast helps you become a more centred and less stressed traveler. The National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) has awarded him its highest credential of Board Leadership Fellow® for eight years in a row and has invited him as a speaker and author on emerging corporate governance, multicultural management, and global compliance issues at many of its conferences. From 2007 to 2016, Michael served as non-executive chairman of the board of healthcare services and logistics company AA International, the parent company of Asia Assistance, based in Kuala Lumpur, with operations in eight other countries throughout the Asia-Pacific region. After the sale of five of the operating entities to French insurance giant AXA in 2016, Michael was appointed as chairman of the board of the remaining independent companies, including AA International Indonesia, a healthcare and insurance services provider based in Jakarta. In 2016 Michael was elected chairman of the supervisory board of the Paris-based International Assistance Group S.A.S. (IAG). IAG is a global consortium of 150+ independent companies with a combined staff of more than 7,500 that provide medical and security services on five continents. The IAG board has nine members from nine different countries. After his two-year term concluded in October of 2018, Michael was asked to continue to serve on the board's executive committee. He stepped down in October of 2019 after 10 years of service on IAG's supervisory board. Since January of 2011, Michael has served as one of four independent directors on the board of Commonwealth Trust Company, Delaware's largest non-deposit trust company with more than $15 billion in assets under administration. In addition to his board service, over the past eleven years as CEO of Global Kompass Strategies, Michael has served as an advisor to corporations and government clients in the United States, Europe, and Asia. He works closely with CEOs and senior leadership teams on business development, cybersecurity oversight and strategic planning. He also advises boards of directors and audit committees on effective risk management measures, corporate governance, global expansion efforts, and emerging digital technology issues. Michael gained extensive expertise in the areas of risk management, corporate governance, and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act when former FBI Director Louis Freeh asked him to serve as President of his global risk management firm, Freeh Group International Solutions, in early 2008. Applying his entrepreneurial and international business experience, Michael was integral in developing the firm's early business relationships and engagements with several Fortune 500© and Global 500© corporations. He also assisted with the group's strategy and business development efforts in Europe. Michael grew up in Berlin and emigrated to the United States soon after witnessing the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. He had the opportunity to lead a fast-growing technology company before being recruited to lead a new start-up venture in late 1999. Michael served for seven years as co-founder and chief executive of the health services company MediGuide and led its business development initiatives in the United States, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. Michael holds a Master's degree from the University of Virginia and a Bachelor's degree from the University of New England. He is a member of the Young Presidents' Organization and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. He earned the CERT Cybersecurity Oversight certificate from the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University and NACD in 2017. Following his personal passions, Michael currently serves as Chair of the Board of the American Cancer Society and, in 2020 and 2021 co-chaired the national search that led to the first woman becoming CEO of this 107-year-old organization. From 2005 to 2014 he served on the board of the Delaware Theatre Company, including four years as chairman. To mark our show's 10th anniversary this month, on this episode, Michael shares 10 things we should know about cancer. Michael is just one of the engaging personalities featured on The One Way Ticket Show, where Host Steven Shalowitz explores with his guests where they would go if given a one way ticket, no coming back. This month Mike, Paul, and Colleen talk fluids. Danny has an oil leak, Steve has a fuel leak, and Jeff is puzzled by guidance on which oil to use. Plus, a question from a maintenance newbie, looking ahead to overhaul, seeing double on batteries, and a pesky propeller governor problem. Submit your question to podcast@aopa.org for a chance to be on the show. Full notes below: Dash has a T-34 and is wondering about the implications of having two 12-volt batteries in series, rather than one 24-volt battery. Paul says one battery is simpler and less costly to maintain, but two 12-volt batteries in series can generally push out more current. You can treat them as one 24-volt batteries and use the applicable trickle charger, Mike says. To do this you would take a 24-volt charger and treat them like one battery, Colleen says. Take the cables and hook up the positive from one battery and the negative from the other battery. They all cautioned to make sure not to hook anything to the short, stout cable connecting the two batteries. Dash also says a mechanic at his airport told him not to continuously charge the battery because it will reduce capacity, but the hosts say that's bad advice and that a trickle charger can be on the batteries all the time. Danny has a continuously oily windshield on his Bonanza, which he thinks might be coming from the top of the case. The engine has 2,200 hours and looks great on the borescope, and he's hoping an overhaul won't be necessary. Paul said he definitely wouldn't pull an engine for this. He goes straight to the crankshaft seal as the offender. Mike thinks the o-ring that seals the prop to the flange is another good culprit to check. Mike said oil coming from the top of the case would go on the back baffles and other spots inside the baffles, not on the windshield. Chris has an O-540 on a Cherokee 6, and although the engine is still running strong, he's planning ahead and wondering if a rebuilt or overhauled engine is better. Mike said this is the worst time he's ever seen to do anything to an engine. Colleen said she thinks people are risk averse and she's always overhauled engines and has been very happy. Mike said the only reason to go rebuilt is if you know you have to replace a major component or if you want to minimize downtime. Mahesh is looking for resources to become better acquainted with managing the maintenance on his Cirrus. The hosts recommend the Cirrus Owners and Pilots Association seminars, owner-assisted annuals, and Mike's books https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08KHDPPWG?binding=kindle_edition&qid=1643661371&sr=8-4&ref=dbs_dp_rwt_sb_pc_tukn Sebastien and Tim have a Murphy Super Rebel with a governor problem. The propeller wanders 35 rpm up and down, and they're wondering if it's a problem and how to fix it. Colleen suggests checking the integrity of the rod end to the bell crank. Jeff has a Lancair and wants to switch oils, but Continental Service Information Letter 19-04 that says operators shouldn't change oil until the engine is overhauled. The hosts all agree that this was a misguided document, and that switching oils will have no determinantal impact to the operation of the engine. Steve's Piper Lance is weeping fuel and he is wondering how critical the problem is. His A&P said he could take the tanks out to have them resealed, but all agree that this isn't necessary. Paul said the Piper maintenance manual and FAA maintenance advisory circular have a good chart to show the various fuel leaks and what to do about them. If it's not leaking bad enough to pull the tanks he said it's probably not worth doing anything.

"People don't necessarily know that this doesn't have to be a career. This can be something that is an add-on to your life...a fantastic add-on to your life." In North America, we enjoy a freedom of the skies that is the envy of the rest of the world. And a lot of that is due to strength in numbers, and advocacy efforts from organizations like COPA – the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association. There’s a lot of change and new faces coming into COPA head office in the past few months, and as a member and regional director, I’m excited to see the organization revitalized. So, I asked COPA’s new President and CEO, Christine Gervais, to come on the show to talk about what COPA has up it’s sleeve for the future, and what she sees as the organization’s strengths and opportunities. The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association is a non-profit political organization that advocates for general aviation. With the advent of drones they've grown to include remote pilots among their membership. Aside from political advocacy and promoting the safety in the skies, they provide training and legal services to their members. They are on team pilot and looking out for the operators. Kat Swain is responsible for leading the UAS “Drone” membership and programs at AOPA and joined the association in 2016. Before joining AOPA, Kat was Vice President for Measure UAS, a technology startup providing commercial drone service to several business verticals. Prior to that, Kat worked in innovation for USAA Insurance, developing and leading one of the first insurance drone operations, and held various insurance leadership positions during her fifteen-year tenure. The world's longest airplane flight took place in 1958, when two aircraft mechanics spent 64 days above the southwestern U.S. in a tiny Cessna with no amenities. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll follow the aerial adventures of Bob Timm and John Cook as they set a record that still stands today. We'll also consider a derelict kitty and puzzle over a movie set's fashion dictates. Intro: The Pythagorean theorem can be demonstrated using tangrams. You've seen plenty of companies focused on pushing sales organizations hard to generate more revenue. There's often a focus inside companies to get more out of the salespeople they have. This is a viable plan of attack, but it's not the only one. Over the last five years, we've seen an increase in marketing and services agencies, and they aren't cheap—even if the services they provide are seen as critical. So today, we want to talk about how building that internal capability is not only worth the investment: it can also increase revenue. To do that, we're talking to Jiri Marousek, Chief Marketing Officer at the AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association). Find a breakdown of this episode here.

ATC Privatization On June 22, 2017, the U.S. House of Representatives released H.R. 2997, the AIRR Act, calling for the privatization of Air Traffic Control in the U.S. Later, both EAA, the Experimental Aircraft Association, and NBAA, the National Business Aviation Association, issued an urgent call for members to contact their representatives in Congress to oppose ATC privatization. AOPA, the Aircraft Owner and Pilots Association, also sent a call for their members to contact their representations just before we published this show, which is why we weren't able to mention them in the podcast. Please take action by going to govt.eaa.org to generate a letter to your representatives in Congress. Please support my show by checking out my new Patreon Page. You will ultimately find lots of free posts on the page. To kick things off, I just posted a pdf of the Delta Airlines study on privatization, which you can download and read for free now. I've also posted results of an ATC Privatization survey of US pilots conducted of Airplane Geeks podcast listeners in February 2017. Please consider supporting my show with contributions of as little as $2 per month, also at my Patreon page. Today, I’m devoting this entire episode to privatization. I’ll be playing audio clips from the President, members of Congress, Airline CEOs, EAA CEO Jack Pelton, and from pilots in other countries that have privatized their air traffic control system. I’ll also share results of a survey of pilot podcast listeners on privatizing ATC. And to help me, I'm joined by Senior Editor of Flying Magazine, Rob Mark. You can Dictate a listener question from your phone and I’ll try to answer it on a future show, or send an email.
