Patient from Hell
Episode 59: Lawyer, mom, and patient from hell living with metastatic breast cancer, Abigail Johnston

Patient from Hell

Abigail Johnston shares her experience as a patient with de novo metastatic breast cancer since 2017. She discusses the challenges she faced in getting a diagnosis and the systemic flaws of the healthcare system. Abigail emphasizes the importance of being an informed and proactive patient, and advocating for yourself even if you're labeled “difficult.” Abigail's fighter spirit in this episode is truly inspiring, and that's what makes her a fellow patient from hell.  Key Highlights: 1. Being an informed and proactive patient is crucial and so is seeking multiple opinions for informed decisions. 2. Personalized, patient-centered care is essential for better healthcare outcomes, focusing on individual needs and preferences. There are fundamental flaws to the current system which treats patients like products on an assembly line. In other words, there's lots of work that needs to be done to achieve personalized care.  3. To be a “patient from hell” means that you won't blindly follow what your doctors say; it means that you'll ask questions, get multiple opinions, and do your own research before committing to a choice that will likely impact you permanently. About our guest: Abigail is a daughter, mother, wife, and attorney who was diagnosed with Stage IV Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC) in June of 201, close on the heels of a misdiagnosed early stage diagnosis in March of 2017. The first few months after her diagnosis were a whirlwind and full of many profound changes, including quite a few surgeries, but Abigail soon found her footing and started her blog "No Half Measures," where she talks about whatever comes to mind, within the lens of her Stage IV diagnosis. Abigail's boys, Liam and Malcolm, who were nearly 2 and nearly 4 at the time of her diagnosis, along with her husband, Elliot, make their own appearances in Abigail's advocacy since it truly is a family affair. For Abigail, advocacy is a whole life endeavor and she never does anything halfway; working with a variety of organizations, including, but not limited to:  1) Project Life Director of Mentorship and Legal Clinics 2) SurvivingBreastCancer.org, Board Member and Chair of MBC Leadership Committee 3) PIK3CA PathBreakers Co-founder Outside of her cancer life, Abigail enjoys spending time with her family and very spoiled cat, reading, crafting, and dreaming up more ways to experience life with her boys. Key Moments: 27:54: “So I tell all my doctors, I'm the boss, I'm the decision maker, you are my advisor. So you are telling me, because you know, as a, and I'll even talk about like as a lawyer, I would have expert witnesses, right? And they would help me understand or explain something that I'm unfamiliar with. So I tell them, I take responsibility for my decisions. I am leaning on you for your expertise. I am leaning on you for your recommendations, but I'm looking at this as your opinion, you're giving me your opinion, which is why I seek out multiple opinions from multiple doctors.” Visit the Manta Cares website  Disclaimer: This podcast is for general informational purposes only and does not constitute the practice of medicine, nursing or other professional health care services, including the giving of medical advice, and no doctor/patient relationship is formed. My guest today on the DiepCJourney podcast has a blog and website titled, No Half Measures, Living Out loud.  2017 was a pivotal year in the life of my guest, Abigail Johnston. Early that year, while dual nursing her twin boys she felt a lump in her left breast. The next few months involved multiple appointments with radiologists, oncologists, and surgeons. Abigail was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer.  Abigail Johnston is a wife, mother, writer, educator, earned her JD after completing law school and is a patient advocate. She begins the interview by sharing her experience at the National AACR conference held in early 2023. She sat on a panel with the FDA speaking about the importance of overall survival as an important end point in clinical trials. With all the complexities on that topic, she felt the FDA worked hard to make sure her voice was heard. Attending conferences allows her to meet other patient advocates and for Abigail and me, this is always one of the highlights of traveling to these meetings. We met in person in December of 2022 at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. As she says, “Those in person hugs, nothing is better, honestly.” She talks about the idea of “finding a purpose after a serious trauma.” Abigail states that trauma changes you fundamentally as a human being. The question becomes, how do you carry that trauma? Advocacy is the way Abigail has found some purpose in “the derailment of her life.” It has become an overarching theme in her life. This was a podcast interview that felt comfortable, informative, and one I will go back and listen to myself often. You can reach out to Abigail and find more of her work in the following links: Blog: No Half Measures: Living Out Loud Bio: Abigail's Story Contact Information: Email Abigail Place to find Abigail's writing and work: Social Media and Elsewhere

In reality, the breast cancer had already spread to Abigail's bones before she felt the lump in her breast. In 2017, Abigail discovered that she inherited the ATM mutation and further testing has revealed other somatic mutations; this is now her focus of research and she bugs her doctors regularly with articles and new information. For Abigail, advocacy is a whole life endeavor and she never does anything halfway. Abigail works with Metavivor as a Peer to Peer Advocate, with Living Beyond Breast Cancer as a Hear My Voice Advocate, with After Breast Cancer Diagnosis (ABCD) and she started her own non-profit, Connect IV Legal Services, to recruit attorneys to do pro bono legal work for Stage IV metastatic breast cancer patients. Outside of cancer advocacy, Abigail serves as a room mom for her boys' teachers and is a board member of her local PTA, serving as a Parliamentarian. Welcome to Everything Trying to Kill You, the comedy podcast that talks about horror movies! On the Thanksgiving episode of our show, episode 54 about Taylor Sheridan’s film Wind River, your hosts Mary Kay McBrayer, Rachel Estridge, and Mary Beyer answer important questions like these:Why are we doing a non-horror movie on a horror podcast? What are your hosts’ favorite westerns? What are their dads’ favorite westerns? How does Wind River maintain or invert traditional Western tropes? Is this movie scary? What does this movie say about dichotomies of “cowboys n’ Indians” racial politics? Do we have a “noble savage” trope? What’s the deal with the Reservation as a setting? Why is the main character a white dude? (Is that a Western trope?) Do we feel good about the casting? Is Cory just “the white guy who is allowed?” What’s Cory’s role in this setting? What about women in westerns? What’s scary about this movie, even though it’s not labeled “horror?” Did you like the dynamic between Cory and Jane? Wind River (2017)– Written and directed by Taylor Sheridan. Within the past month, it became apparent that the Cavs were dead in the water as constructed. The only question that remained was how far they were willing to go to change their fortunes. As we found out Thursday, the answer was “pretty damn far.” The team tied its own NBA trade deadline day record, sending out six players in three deals and bringing in four new faces. Jeff Nomina of Waiting For Next Year joins the guys to discuss how a front office under fire for months stood up and overhauled a fractured roster to rebuild the team's culture. Whether it is enough to overcome the Warriors (…or Rockets?) remains to be seen for now. ... Plus: The guys wrap up the show with a salute to WFNY on its 10th anniversary.
