Playlist:Jamie xx, Romy, Oliver Sim, the xx - Waited All NightIndigo De Souza - WHOLESOMECharli xcx, Troye Sivan - Talk talk featuring troye sivansalute - go! On this episode of Songs of Our Lives, it's Loula Yorke! Ever since our paths crossed a couple years ago, I've become a huge admirer of all the various components in Loula's creative practice. Her new mixtape series is (along with her recent album, “Volta”) one of my favorite things happening in 2024. Plus, I'm not sure I've laughed more during an episode than this one! So, after talking through both of those things, we get into jamming to ABBA, Mira Calix and Oliver Coates destroying us, Candi Staton's unheralded greatness, the diverging paths and intersections of dance music and punk, Kreayshawn's drunk vibes, the honey in Erykah Badu's voice, The Roches unhinged lyrics, how utterly bad ass Special Interest are, Liquid Crystal being better than Mozart, and so much more!Listen to all of Loula's picks HERELoula's websiteLoula's newsletterLoula Yorke “Volta”Songs of Our Lives is a podcast series hosted by Brad Rose of Foxy Digitalis that explores the music that's made us and left a certain mark.
This week the boys are joined by actress Tina Nikolova to drink some whiskey and beer and discuss Aftersun (2022), writer/director (and multiple-BAFTA nominee) Charlotte Wells' personal feature film starring Academy Award nominee Paul Mescal (Normal People, The Lost Daughter, Gladiator 2) and newcomer scene-stealer Frankie Corio. The film is very Scottish, and those UK-ers must really love their lottery because The National Lottery sponsored this. Apparently they sponsor a lot. The film is about a woman reflecting back on a vacation she took with her young father when she was young, reliving moments and flashes through home videos that capture more about her father than she was able to see as a child. Powerful stuff! Additional Cast/Crew: Celia Rowlson-Hall, Sally Messham, Spike Fearn, Harry Perdios, Ruby Thompson, Kayleigh Coleman, Barry Jenkins, Oliver Coates, Gregory Oke. It's one of those episodes of Soundtracking which we love so much, in which Edith gets to pick the brains of an up-and-coming filmmaker who's just beginning their journey in the industry. Charlotte Wells's debut feature Aftersun is an absolutely beautiful piece of work, telling the story of Sophie as she reflects upon a holiday with her then young father they took together 20 years earlier. As well as containing countless fantastic needle drops, Aftersun is also expertly scored by Oliver Coates, who very kindly furnished us with cues from his as yet unreleased score. Cheers, Oliver!
Chris Clark's music is hard to describe, but if you wanted to explain it to an electronic music fan, you might use the dreaded term "IDM" to encompass the many strange and alluring records, some frantic, some chill, the UK producer has put out through Warp over the years. We can be a bit more specific: he uses field recordings, out-there drum patterns and all kinds of hardware (seriously, there's a lot) to make make meticulously processed music, some of which you can dance to. Lately, though, he's turned his attention to classical music, scoring films and televisions shows and culminating in last year's Playground In A Lake for vaunted label Deutsche Grammophon, which featured guests like AFRODEUTSCHE and Oliver Coates and a member of Grizzly bear on a moving, string and horns-led suite about climate change. You hear all these ideas at once on Clark's stirring RA Podcast, which features music, as he explains, from 1922 all the way to 2022. Classical rubs elbows with Burial and Ricardo Villalobos, as once familiar tracks melt into new (mis)shapes. It also features plenty of Clark originals—maybe some glimpsse of the new album? The best part isn't even the formidable selections, but the way he puts it altogether. Far from a seamless DJ mix, this one is full of peaks and valleys and clever transitions that'll make you check the tracklist and wonder what you just heard. It's the kind of all-over-the-place mix that captures the brilliance of Clark's in a DJ format. Maybe he should do this more often. Read more: https://ra.co/podcast/823
Today's guest deejay is danielfuzztone. daniel's mix is important to me for several reasons. One reason is that I meant daniel through Soundwave guest deejay Michael Donaldson (listen to Michael's mix here) when he posted an interview with daniel on his Micro.blog. Initially, I read the interview simply because it was on Micro.blog, a cool social media network I am a member of. But what hooked me was the interview itself and daniel's exploration of sound through this music. The other reason today's show is important to me is that while I love all the mixes on Soundwave, and I mean that, daniel's mix hit me in all the right places. He included some familiar and precious tracks from the likes of Miles Davis, This Mortal Coil and Skinny Puppy. This is stuff I immersed myself in the 80s and 90s, so it felt like putting on a well-worn sweater. But daniel's mix included a lot of stuff I had never heard of before, like Oliver Coates, Besombes & Rizet, and Angelo Badalamenti. It was a perfect blend of the familiar and unfamiliar that his mix provided just under an hour's with of dopamine hits. The final reason is that I listened to daniel's mix many places (while working, walking my dog, doing the dishes, etc.), but the place that had the most significance was in my car while driving my grandkid to day school. The experience is already special because I enjoy watching all the adults delivering their most precious of cargos and seeing the love and concern on their faces. daniel's mix heightened and already tender experience. Join us next weekend when our guest deejay will be Sean Slight. Music for a Micro-chip found in Amber. A sonic timestamp of f lo a t i n g soundscapes from 2020 and 2019. At times communicating weariness, at others reverence. Just as the amber does, the current situation magnifies. In turns, we are engulfed by the importance of each second and each decision. But trepidation breeds inaction. Let go of that Beta-Blocker. Choose ur painting music carefully. 2020 happened to all of us. It made plain all of the things still happening. It made still happen. Starting off with a new one from Anna Roxanne, our ears follow the audio environments as they chug along through different landscapes. Past Wilson Tanners' Antipodean canals; over Nailah Hunter's blue-toned, dewy early-morning mountain; through KMRU's chattering Nairobi market. As our journey heads into the night, its surroundings turn baroque. Pianos and cellos hit against sub-base and digital gurgles. We step into John Carrol Kirby's living room and feel the dormant threat of Anthony Joshua. We find ourselves gazing at the shoes and the spirit of Oliver Coates. If you strain ur ears enough, perhaps even a strangled hope for a continuation of hope is audible. Artwork: Alfie Dwyer @ze.zima
