It's been so disheartening to see outlandish and offensive rumors about Haitian immigrants in Springfield Ohio turn into bomb threats, harassment, and arson. But it's also not surprising. It's the inevitable consequence of dangerous extremist rhetoric.During last week's debate, we saw Donald Trump attack immigrants at every turn. And JD Vance just admitted on television that he shared the story about Haitians in Springfield despite knowing it was a lie. “If I have to create stories,” he told Dana Bash of CNN, “then that's what I'm gonna do.”But that kind of negative messaging, those attacks on our neighbors, don't sit well with suburban women. And they certainly don't appeal to young people. This week we're joined by Olivia Julianna, an inspiring Gen Z activist.Olivia tells our hosts that young people care about the same issues as other generations - issues like affordable housing, abortion rights, gun violence, and childcare. So when we talk to the young people in our lives about voting, she advises us to start by asking what they care about. What issues affect them every day? Chances are, you'll be able to connect those issues back to policies that have a tangible impact on their lives. If you want to support Haitian immigrants in Ohio, Community Refugee & Immigration Services and the Haitian Community Help and Support Center are good places to start.Next week, we'll be taking a short break from The Suburban Women Problem to share a 3-episode miniseries about immigration called The American Fabric. Hosted by Rachel Vindman, this series will debunk myths and misinformation, examine what can be done politically, and give immigrants a chance to tell their own story. It'll appear in the regular podcast feed on Wednesday September 25th.For a transcript of this episode, please email theswppod@redwine.blue. This week, we want to take the opportunity to revisit our November 2023 conversation with political strategist and influencer Olivia Julianna. In this episode, hosts NewDEAL CEO Debbie Cox Bultan and Ryan Coonerty talk with Oliva about living in a conservative Texas household and how she started posting her political opinions online and received national attention for her direct and practical perspective on top policy issues. As her followers grew, so did the haters, including Congressman Matt Gaetz, whose disparaging attacks on her at a 2022 conservative summit motivated Olivia to leverage the limelight to raise $2 million for reproductive rights. Since then, her following has continued to grow, and now she is being asked to guide the White House and state and local leaders on how to connect with young voters. Olivia, Ryan, and Debbie also talk about the disconnect between online and real life, and why Olivia wants Democrats to use simple rhetoric to communicate with voters. Olivia also helps us unpack concerns around voter suppression ahead of the 2024 election, advises young people on how to get more involved in their local politics, and directs Democrats on how to rally voters. Tune in to learn more from this engaging conversation and hear why Olivia believes Texas will be a blue state by 2030. It's become an annual exercise of catharsis, renewal and forward strategy for us at Progress Texas: every year, we analyze the last year of the battle and pick out the five best, and five worst, Texans when it came to the arc of politics in the Lone Star State. On the good side, the obvious: Beto O'Rourke and Mothers Against Greg Abbott, along with pleasant surprise heroes like Olivia Julianna and Access Education Round Rock. On the bad side, the even more obvious Greg Abbott and Ted Cruz, with disturbing and dangerous surprises in the Republican press on banning books and attacking school boards. Right now, for Texas progressives, it can be easy to see and to be discouraged by all the negatives stacked against us - but we're here also to highlight and celebrate the good and the possible that is always present in Texas, and we're renewed for the fight ahead. Thanks as always for your support of Progress Texas!
Joy Reid leads this special edition of The ReidOut live from the Flying Saucer Draft Emporium in Fort Worth, Texas! We are now two weeks away from the midterm elections. The stakes could not be higher for the Lone Star State where everything, from school board elections to the race for governor, is dominated by the struggle to define what America is, and who America stands for. Democratic nominee for Texas governor Beto O'Rourke joins Joy Reid to discuss all this and more. Plus, Twitter sensation and activist, Olivia Julianna, Political Strategy Specialist for Gen Z for Change, joins The ReidOut on why she believes young voters will come out in droves for the midterms. Finally, Joy asks our in-person audience what their number one voting issue is. All this and more in this roadtrip edition of The ReidOut on MSNBC.

This week Sara brings us the story of the remarkable Olivia Julianna! A week and a half ago Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz got on the mic and fat-shamed the 19-year-old political strategist for Gen Z for Change, a youth-led nonprofit creating tangible change on issues that disproportionately effect young people. Olivia used this mega-spotlight to flip the narrative and raise money for Abortion Funds. At the time this episode drops she has raised over $2.2 million and trolled Gaetz to the moon and back and she's not done yet. If you've surfed the internet over the course of the last few years, there's no doubt you may have stumbled across at least one viral clip of U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg on Fox News. Then, Olivia Julianna, a 19-year-old activist and strategist for Gen Z For Change, reflects on her work as a fundraising powerhouse and her reaction to Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz's attempts to humiliate her after arguing that overweight and unattractive women don't need to worry about getting pregnant or needing abortions.
