My World My Way was the name of @e-saggila's album back in 2019. It perfectly encapsulates her brazen approach to sound which chews up and spits out everything from noise to breakcore to techno. The Iraq-born, Toronto-based artist has always revelled in the contrast between tempos, shocking rhythms and distorted textures. Part of the thrill of listening to it is the sense it could all collapse at any moment, whether releasing on her label Summer Isle or the likes of Opal Tapes, Hospital Productions, and Northern Electronics. This week she delivers an hour of pure electronic potency that brings to life her uniquely dystopian visions. Staring in what sounds like a haunted underground metro station, she then transitions into futuristic worlds of pulsating bass, squealing synths, scratchy melodies and hyper-driven percussive patterns that race along into the unknown. It's an abstract selection of sound that is cerebral and cinematic but will also cause utter carnage in a club setting.
Today we launch a new mix with Italo/Iranian DJ and producer Sciahri, to mark the release of his brand new EP on Monument Records "Stranger Infatuation." Sciahri has been meandering throughout the spectrum of Techno ever since his 2014 debut EP on Ilian Tape. He has since released on some of the most influential labels, such as Opal Tapes, Manhigh, Semantica, Mord, and, in parallel, via his own outlet Sublunar Records since 2017. More recently in 2022 he started a live project focused on ambient/ experimental Techno, with a world premiere at the Tehran Contemporary Sounds festival. Since 2023, he has been resident at his hometown club Warehouse303. Tune in now and be sure to also check out Stranger Infatuation - out now. https://soundcloud.com/sciahri https://www.facebook.com/Sciahri/ https://www.instagram.com/sciahri__sublunar/ https://mnmt.bandcamp.com/album/sciahri-stranger-infatuation
Siavash Amini, Sarrsew, mHz and Mariam Rezaei discuss Tehran's experimental scene, and how geography and community can affect the creative process.Based in Tehran, Iranian musician and composer Siavash Amini has worked with the labels Room40, Hallow Ground, Opal Tapes and Umor Rex for the better part of the past 10 years. He's also collaborated with a wide range of international artists including Rafael Anton Irisarri, 9T Antiope and Zenjungle, and remixed tracks for Carl Craig, Bernard Szajner and the duo Arigt. This year he's released two albums, Eidolon and Eremos. Mariam Rezaei is a composer and genre-defying turntablist who's been honing her own unique style since starting DJing at 15. She previously led experimental arts project TOPH, TUSK FRINGE and TUSK NORTH, and in November 2022 received the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award for Artists in recognition of her contribution to music composition. She released her album BOWN earlier this year. Sara Bigdeli Shamloo, aka SarrSew, is a Tehran-born and Paris-based vocalist, lyricist and composer. She's one half of duo 9T Antiope, and also one half of the aternative/electronic Farsi duo Taraamoon. On top of her collaborative projects and solo releases, she's also produced creations for theatre and film and is an active performer and actor. Mo H. Zareei, aka mHz, is an electronic musician, sound artist, and researcher whose artistic practice covers a wide range from electronic compositions to kinetic sound-sculptures and audiovisual installations. After studying in Tehran and California, he now lives in Wellington, New Zealand, where he's a senior lecturer in composition and sonic arts. He also released the album Proof of Identity earlier this year
@monotronique hails from Kharkiv, which is one of the cities affected most by the war in Ukraine. Before the invasion, he had become one of its most definitive DJs thanks to his residency at Zhivot. That was the platform that helped him break out on the European scene with his brand mix of house, techno and bass. Drawing on those genres, his productions pair minimalism with experimentalism and have come on the likes of Livity Sound, Opal Tapes and Banoffee Pies. This week's mix is an epic one spread across two and a half hours which showcases Monotronique's ability to start slow and build a fantastic mood. Nothing is rushed here as the electronics go from deep and dubby to smooth and seductive. House, techno and raved-up breaks all build the pressure then well-placed moments of euphoria break out to release the pressure before things build once again. It's a brilliantly balanced mix from this essential Ukrainian.

Our next mixtape instalment comes by Temp-Illusion the Iranian experimental/electronic duo consisting of Shahin Entezami and Behrang Najafi. Formed in 2011 and mainly operating as a live act, temp-illusion use a wide range of music programs and hardware synthesizers in their music production to combine noisy and atmospheric layers with melodies and complex beat programming to achieve a unique style of dance music. In recent years, an exciting Iranian electronic music-scene has quickly emerged and reached western ears, partly thanks to the work of Sote and Zabte Sote, a sister-label to Opal Tapes that focuses on putting out experimental electronic music by Iranian composers that he runs, as well as SET festival. Temp-Illusion release their first album Autoelected in 2019 in Zabte Sote as well as the more recent Pend, released earlier this year. While Autoelected was a perfect example of what recently has become known as ‘deconstructed dance music, Pend takes it from there to evolve into an assembly of carefully designed sonic microstructures that ultimately result in an artificial macro environment of hard electronic funk. Taking the listener from a meditative to a hyper demented state, inspired by the fear and stress instigated by media manipulation during and after the war. Shahin Entezami and Behrang Najafi, also have their solo projects as Tegh and Bescolour. The artists share that this mix is mostly made from the music they have recently listened to during these 2-3 months of quarantine: Since our rehearsals are also cancelled due to this pandemic, we have started to work separately on music projects, which is a new experience for us and it would probably change the way we sound! So this mix is the first output of working on a mutual project separately. Monolithian matter, melting Arvo Pärt in a pan, finding the hidden trumpets. The Tehran-based composer discusses three important albums.
For ASSEMBLY, Karen Gwyer approached the street noises as drums. Building over the course of the performance, Karen will use and process the ambient sounds to create a multilayer, polyrhythmic piece created from the more punchy and identifiable sounds as well as distorting the general hum. The mood and intensity will shift as the performance progresses. On top of the rhythmic street sounds, layers of synths will build to create a moving yet sobering composition that draws on Karen’s own emotions around her 12 years as a Londoner, both the pain and relief of leaving, and the conflict of looking at it now from afar. Pedestrians, traffic, roadworks, protest; the corner of Somerset House where Waterloo Bridge meets Embankment is a hive of often unpredictable activity and noise. Acknowledging and working with this to define a compositional framework, Marclay invited a series of guests to collaborate in bringing the outdoors inside for an evolving series of electro-acoustic performances. Karen Gwyer was born in the southern US and raised in the north. Now based in Berlin after more than a decade in London, she shifts between pumping, thickly melodic, just left-of-techno dancefloor vibes and diversionary acidic psychedelia in her expansive, largely analogue live electronic performances. To date, she has released a handful of acclaimed recordings on Don’t Be Afraid, Nous Disques, Opal Tapes and Kaleidoscope, among others. She has produced remixes for labels such as InFiné, Software, and Public Information, and has created a number of commissioned pieces for Berlin’s Pop-Kultur festival and Open Music Archive in London. Christian Marclay’s ambitious and accomplished practice explores the juxtaposition between sound, photography, video and sculpture. APPLE PODCASTS: apple.co/2MgH6RE SPOTIFY: spoti.fi/2Sswozn or search 'shock world service' in your Podcast App. Shock World Service 085: Lock Robster's Conundrum by Dyllan Zain 10/5/19 London, United Kingdom 1. Peter Kowald & Tatsuya Nakatani - Definition 11 A textbook recording from Quakebasket record label. The track, taken from the album, "13 Definitions Of Truth", is much like any other Nakatani collaboration with a single horn player. The beauty is, everything he does is champion material. Every note Nakatani plays and bends out of shape can never be fully recreated to perfect duplication. 2. Lumisokea - Jenseits Dub Released on a double cassette called 'Contemporary Dance' from the infamous Opal Tapes. Tons of goodies on the compilation including this track - metallic flys buzzing past your ear while the war horns echo from the hidden valley. 3. Forgotten Corner & Khidja - Tatooine Moons (Cassini Division Remix) A beautiful collaboration between Forgotten Corner and Khidja with a mystic twist by Cassini Division - forged in dark caverns wielded through ancient temples. 4. A Strange Wedding - Cosmic Bastringue Chuggy Sluggy. Downtempo coming out of France. 5. Soft Rocks - Thunder Thunder (Spectral Empire Remix) Spectral Empire runs the remix on the Soft Rock Brighton Boy's track. Running through the cosmically composed jungle. There are even some lion field recordings in there - watch out Attenborough! 6. Asha Mirr - Blue Love One of my recent obsessions. I came across Asha Mirr recently - instantly blown away and always include her tracks in my sets. Massively underrated and relatively unknown for the calibre of production. Feels like it's always on the very verge of disintegrating into complete chaos yet never ventures into truly harsh territory which I enjoyed. Thought provoking and impossible to pin down, It's boundary-expanding and unsettling. 7. Asha Mirr - Killers Again, another 'killer' track from Mirr. 8. J-ZBEL - Nik Molina Deconstructed breakbeat with holistic sounds of worship. J-zbel guys are the weirdest, nicest people you'll never meet. 9. Fleck E.S.C - Nice Guy (Pip Williams RMX) FLECK is one of my fav's at the moment for gritty, sleazy electro. This one is remixed by Pip Williams - harsh wind samples, followed with an unapologetic bassline and claps. 10. Carl Finlow - Hashtag (Fleck E.S.C Remix) Another gritty electro track, this time remixed by Fleck. Mad scientist vocals with undertones of bleepy bubbles. 11. Sematic4 - Dream Creator Been digging this one a lot lately. Coming from Dalmata Danie, Sematic4 and DJ Overdose join forces putting our three tracks each on the release. Full of dirty breaks - everything you'd expect from Overdose and old-school legend Sematic4. 12. The Mover - Underwater Operations What a build up track this one is! It creeps up on your a like a communist submarine - firing off torpedos into your nervous system! This one is pretty mellow given The Movers history. One for a building until threat level midnight. 13. The B-52's - Rock Lobster Ah. Rock Lobster. What an oddball wonky track, eh? Impossible not to bubble your head to the rift. I've always wanted to lay this down in a club, hopefully, will get the chance one day! ROCK LOBSTER! https://shockworldservice.bandcamp.com/ http://www.shockworldservice.com/

As soft and dreamy as their moniker may be, Clouds actually make some of the most brutal and destructive techno out there. The Scottish duo of Calum MacLeod and Liam Robertson have been doing so with ever more abrasive surfaces and twisted drums since 2010, releasing on the likes of Turbo, Opal Tapes and Soma. Two of their three albums, though, have come on Speedy J’s Electric Deluxe. The latest, Heavy The Eclipse, is a conceptual affair that comes with a brilliantly realised website telling the story of a city that was left to rot after social and economic collapse. This “post-industrial hell-future” is taken over by Germans and renamed Neurealm, and is soundtracked across 14 perfectly dark and dystopian pieces featuring snippets of vocals, tinges of euphoria, passages of desolate dub and frazzled industrial noise. In their mix for us, the pair continue with that bleakly immersive sonic imagery by using unreleased material only! Nightmarish screams are obscured by scuzzy sonic blizzards, rave synths spray about above overdriven drums and hardcore and dub culture references often poke through the mire. It’s an all out aural assault that takes you to the heart of a grotty, strobe-lit warehouse in the very dead of night.

Russell E.L. Butler is one of the Bay Area's finest. On Friday, April 21, Butler will be warming up the As You Like It dance-floor, opening for Umfang and Berlin legend Marcel Dettmann as they take over Public Works for part of AYLI's nascent Unabridged series. The Bermuda-born, Oakland-based producer has spent the last several years building up an unassailably fine catalogue of raw electronic music: first as Black Jeans, a short-lived minimal synth project that refreshingly did not trade in nostalgia, and recently under his own name, under which he releases stripped-down techno that carries potent emotional weight. The world is taking notice — his first album appeared on cult U.K. label Opal Tapes, and three EPs followed shortly thereafter, with more on the way this year. He’s just returned to the Bay after touring his live set all over the States and Canada.

Russell Butler is a significant voice in San Francisco's thriving underground, and a hardware wizard responsible for some absolutely compelling techno releases on Opal Tapes/Black Opal and Jacktone. For his contribution to the podcast, he flexes his lesser-known love of house music, and give us a jacking hour of true dance-floor mania. - More from Russell: @russellelbutler
