In this Religion Today episode host Martin Tanner quotes Matthew 24 and describes how the plain meaning of many of the signs described by Jesus were to happen during the lifetime of his Apostles. The meaning of the "Abomination of Desolation" in the Book of Danial and in the Gospels is explained as the Roman destruction of the Temple and desecration by sacrificing pigs on the alter. Martin describes Joseph Smith's statement that the "last great sign" before the Second Coming of Jesus will be misunderstood by the world as "a comet or a planet." Then he quotes from Orson Hyde's amazing October 24, 1841 dedication of the land of Jerusalem for the return of the Jews, the "building up of Jerusalem" and the rebuilding or "rearing a Temple" in Jerusalem.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In 1841, after years of sacrifice and travel, Orson Hyde arrived in Jerusalem. His brief but impactful mission had innumerable effects on the Church in the Holy Land. In this episode, Professor of Ancient Scripture David Whitchurch takes us through Orson Hyde's journey, which paved the way for the miraculous opening of the BYU Jerusalem Center. Professor Whitchurch also reflects on his own journey of learning about this spiritual giant—and shows why Orson Hyde's story is such an important example to us all.
In this weeks episode of Latter-Day Lights, Jared Rader shares his story about how when he was young, he stumbled upon some really interesting information about Orson Hyde while researching the history of Nevada, and how that and other experiences changed the trajectory of his career and ultimately his life.To listen to the audio version of this podcast on Apple, Audible, Spotify, Google, Pandora, iHeart Radio, or other popular podcast apps, click here: https://latterdaylights.buzzsprout.com/If you have a story you'd like to share that could instill faith, invite growth, and inspire others, apply to be a guest on our show by visiting: https://www.latterdaylights.com/
Yes, it's time for our next installment of the Millennial Messiah by Bruce R. McConkie. Before that, however, we're doing a deep-dive into the history of the BYU center in Jerusalem. We discuss how it came to be, the hurdles overcome, and the strange and mysterious ways in which Mormon God works. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints punched far above its weight class in the sphere of international politics to shoehorn this place onto the Mount of Olives! Then we round out the episode with some happy news about scrap wood being used more sustainably. The guys start off by reminiscing over the bonkers AM radio show Coast to Coast with George Noory. Smith is still frustrated about Rusty's aversion to the term Mormon. Smith talks about his time as a gun enthusiast and how some of his attitudes have changed. Smith tells Joe about a video of the president of the NRA getting trolled (link below). The corrections department reminded the guys to circle back to Ronald Poelman's 1984 conference talk that needed to be corrected (link below). The guys remember the early 2000s and how funny it was when TV shows were bleeped. Joe remembers how much of a laugh GA's and executives get for mediocre jokes. Smith notices that beards and poligamy ended around the same time in the church. The guys wonder how the convo went between the Lord and JS when JS married Orson Hyde's wife while he was on a mission. Smith feels like he notices more of the apologetics since he stopped attending. He thinks that the apologetics in Rough Stone have kept RL Bushman from being ex'd. In this chapter, Nephi is afraid of God and that's a good thing. Did Lehi find the golden snitch outside of his tent? Also, sometimes God makes things difficult to show his power. Nephi murmurs about his soreness, but nobody calls him on it. God threatens people with destruction sometimes, also a good thing. The baller director is aka the L-word. Brigham Young, 2nd prophet and president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormonism) taught that if children go astray it is entirely the fault of the mother. Young also taught that if children go astray they should be cast out and shunned. Orson Hyde implied that those who are critical of the Church should be killed. What are the real origins of LDS polygamy? Where did it start? Who was involved? Where did these teachings of spiritual wives and plural wives come from? One of the earliest contemporary first hand records we have are the priceless journals of Samuel Smith and Orson Hyde, two early Mormon missionaries who detailed extensively their findings among the Cochranite people of 1832 New England. Did the Cochranites influence early LDS polygamy? Why does the LDS church own these journals, yet speak nothing of them and their connections to early origins of polygamy? The post Origins of LDS Polygamy: Samuel Smith & Orson Hyde's Missionary Journals Among the Cochranites appeared first on Hemlock Knots.
Conoce la vida, obra y legado del hermano Orson Hyde.
Here in the beginning of section 68 the Lord tells Orson Hyde that he is ordained "to proclaim the everlasting gospel." It is sometimes easy to read a scripture like that and disconnect and not see how it relates to us. However, each of us as members of the church, by way of our covenant relationship with our Heavenly Father has the same responsibility given to us! We may not have hands placed on our heads to set us apart as a missionary, but our responsibility is just as real.
My wisdom is greater than the cunning of the devil - Doctrine and Covenants 10:43 - Come, Follow Me Ponderize and Commentary Podcast by: Craig Conover Doctrine and Covenants 10:43 43 I will not suffer that they shall destroy my work; yea, I will show unto them that my wisdom is greater than the cunning of the devil. Dictionary.com defines cunning as: “skill employed in a shrewd or sly manner, as in deceiving; craftiness; guile.” Cunning men often pass as wise men, or at least attempt or desire too. Satan, desires and attempts to pass off as wise, but regardless how hard he attempts and desires to be wise, he is not. Dictionary.com defines wisdom as: “the quality or state of being wise; knowledge of what is true or right coupled with just judgment as to action; sagacity, discernment, or insight.” Satan will always follow after his own agenda or desires in a cunning way, and he will not conform to truth unless it conforms to his will. Those two cannot walk side by side each other, for they are polar opposites. The best he can do is to mingle in truth and scripture into his teachings, but rest assured they will always be bent and twisted to be in alignment with his teachings. God is filled with wisdom for He is the embodiment of truth. We would be wise to learn to embody the will, mind, and voice of God. We do this through receiving and obeying personal revelation, which will never lead us astray. Orson Hyde had this to say about personal revelation. Jesus says, “Whosoever falleth upon this stone shall be broken.” Matt. 21:44 What stone does he refer to? The Lord says to his disciples, “Whom say ye that I am?” Peter answers—“Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus indicated to Peter that he had spoken truly by saying unto him, “Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: flesh and blood hath not revealed this unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock will I build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Matt. 16:15-18 This stone or rock was the word of God revealed unto Peter. Present revelation from God, then, is the stone or rock which our Savior spoke of. Any church or any people built upon this foundation cannot be prevailed against by any power, for one obvious reason: whenever a people are built upon this foundation and they get into trouble and difficulty, they will ask the Lord to show them the way out; and being built upon present revelation and in communion with God, he will tell them what to do. His [p. 235b] wisdom is greater than the cunning of the Devil, D&C 10:43 and consequently the gates of hell cannot prevail against them. Any people built upon this foundation are hard to head, though their numbers may be small. The ancient church was never overcome until they lost this principle of present revelation. Then they were prevailed against and fell away, because they ceased to build upon this foundation—the stone or rock of present revelation. Solomon says—“Where no vision is, the people perish.” Prov. 29:18 Let us never be overcome as we learn to obtain the wisdom of God through personal revelation. We're continuing our discussion of the Mormon settlement in Zodiac, Texas. Historian Melvin Johnson describes reading the registers from RLDS Archives that document the many temple ordinances that were completed. He also told me that there was more than one Endowment House in Utah! https://youtu.be/3eTPO3tnKvg GT : Oh, 1874, so, essentially, what we're saying here is between 1846 and 1874, at least in the LDS church, there was no temple to do this. But they would do some of these ordinances outside the temple, on a case by case basis, essentially. Mel: Correct, and then, of course, the Endowment House was built to be a bridge between that and when the temples came online. Orson Hyde was very jealous of that, so he had an endowment house built down in Sanpete County. GT: Oh, wow. I didn't know that. Mel: Yeah, there were a number of them. And maybe the Endowment House was built earlier than what I think and I need to look at that... He also discusses a recent forgery on the Zodiac Temple. Mel: There is a forgery called Zodiac Temple records, Rituals and Rites by John Hawley. It's 32 pages written of these supposed rites and rituals in the Zodiac Temple. One: John Hawley was not the clerk of the temple. His brother-in-law, John Young was. And secondly, Zodiac was like Kirtland and Nauvoo and early Utah, in that all of the ritual and rites ceremony was oral. It was not written down until 1874 for the opening of the St. George temple. Does it have ties to Mark Hofmann? Check out our conversation…. Historian Mel Johnson tells more about the Zodiac Temple in Texas and the Wightites. On this episode, Governor Ford’s hands are tied. Sheriffs Reynolds and Wilson, who’d arrested Joseph Smith, appeal to the Governor to call out the state militia to rein in Jo. The Mormons sign petitions calling on the Governor to never issue a warrant for arrest on any Mormons ever again. The Mormons collect a packet of affidavits and statements to be sent to Governor Ford, attempting to obstruct the wheels of justice from grinding up the Prophet. After that, Jo has a curious little meeting with some Potawatomie Chiefs and then calls Orson Hyde on a mission to Russia. [paypal-donation] We started this conversation by talking about the paternity of Josephine Lyon. It turns out that Dr. Ugo Perego is also testing other potential children of Joseph Smith. We'll talk about the historical relationship between Joseph Smith, Orson Hyde, and Marinda Johnson, as well as Parley Pratt and Mary Ann Frost. What are the results of the Joseph-Parley paternity test? Ugo: Mary Ann Frost was the second wife of Parley P. Pratt. He was born December 1844, Moroni Pratt, which placed him 9 months within the death of Joseph Smith. Mary Ann Frost was sealed to Joseph Smith, was never sealed to Parley. In fact Mary Ann Frost is recorded as one of the first females, if not the first group that received the temple ordinances in the Red Brick Store. She was there when Joseph Smith introduced the first temple endowment. Eventually she was sealed to Joseph and children were born. The first one, Moroni was linked to Joseph Smith as a possibility. I think Fawn Brodie mentions that as a possibility in her book. ... I found a document while I was researching this when I was doing this project that had Parley P. Pratt's statement that every child he would have with Mary Ann would be Joseph's in the eternity. Are you with me? So every child he would have with Mary Ann Frost would have been Joseph's in the eternity. It sounds to me very much like the Levirate marriage where the man dies, his wife is still alive, we're talking about spiritual wife here because we are talking about celestial marriage, the next of kin, which would be brother Pratt to Joseph, spiritually is raising a posterity in eternity for Joseph. GT: Hmmm. That is very interesting interpretation. Ugo: That's what he said. That's what Parley said. It's not my words. GT: Parley said that? Ugo: Parley said that. GT: So let me make sure I'm clear on the thing. So you said that Frost, what was her first name? Ugo: Mary Ann Frost. GT: Mary Ann Frost was sealed to Joseph but that was after… Ugo interrupts: but married to Parley. GT: Was she married to Parley before she was sealed to Joseph? Ugo: Yes. GT: That just seems so strange. Ugo: She was married to Parley for time, but to Joseph for eternity. GT: See I think most people would be so surprised to hear that they would have a polygamist marriage that would be not for eternity. I mean when you read D&C 132, that's what it seems like and so it seems so strange. Ugo: We still don't know a lot of things about it. If you are very negative about the whole thing, you're always going to look for the dirtiest reasons why there were these things: polyandry, promiscuity, sexual interest, control over women, whatever you want to bring up. But if you are more on the, well let's see. If they are really trying to establish some celestial order on the earth; Who are we? We are all children of Heavenly Father. It doesn't matter how we are connected as long as we are connected to him at the end, right Ugo also makes some interesting points regarding potentially polyandrous relationships. Ugo: We have to wonder, what was the nature of a woman being alive and having some certain documented tie, a union, or marriage to more than one man? We are trying to speculate and guess what was the nature and the practice and the environment and the sexuality that surrounded this union. Was it the same? Was it different from husband to another husband? We are left with wondering on this issue. Besides, the fact that we don't have children of Joseph Smith from polygamous relationships does not tell us anything about his sexual interactions with this woman. We all know that you don't have a child every time you have intercourse. But it does bring up some interesting alternative answers when you see that there are absolutely no children. Brigham Young had no problem having children with all his wives, or Joseph F. Smith, or anyone else,

When we talk about Mormon polygamy, we usually mean polygyny—where a man has more than 1 wife. The opposite of that is polyandry, where a woman can have more than 1 husband. Did you know that Joseph was sealed to women who were already married? In this episode, Dr. Brian Hales talks about several of these instances. We'll talk in detail about one of these women, Sylvia Session Lyon. She gave birth to a girl named daughter, Josephine, and Josephine's mother said she was the child of Joseph. They did a DNA test to see if Josephine was the daughter of Joseph or Windsor. I theorized that the marriage between Joseph Smith and Sylvia Sessions Lyon did include sexual relations in that plural marriage, and I had some theories as how that might have unfolded. When the DNA evidence came back—and part of the theory was that Joseph was the father of Josephine [daughter of Sylvia Sessions Lyon.] That's an important point. But when the DNA evidence came back that Windsor Lyon was the father, it required me to re-write things. I'll be honest with you. It wasn't what I expected, but it was what I had hoped. Brian now believes that there were no sexual relations between Joseph and any of these 11-14 polyandrous marriages. Brian: Why the women chose Joseph over their legal husbands, sometimes these men were active Latter-day Saints, we don't know. It seems odd. But it's not as odd as them practicing actual sexual polyandry without anybody ever talking about it or finding that to be controversial. GT: Ok, so your opinion is of all the eleven polyandrous marriages, where a woman could have two husbands essentially, none of them involved sexual relations. Brian: Correct. GT: That's your opinion. Ok. So let's talk a little bit about… Brian: Rick, let me interrupt though. If people go to my books, they're going to be confused because I used the word eleven. The twelfth polyandrous marriage on the chart is Sarah Ann Whitney to Joseph C. Kingsbury, which was a front marriage. Everybody involved with that realized that she was sealed to Joseph but apparently there was some legal issues going on, so Joseph asked Kingsbury to have a legal marriage but not consummate the marriage. Everybody agrees that was the relationship. That's number twelve. Number thirteen is Lucinda Pendleton who we just know nothing about, and the fourteenth one is to Mary Herron who we have one attestation that connects her to Joseph sexually but we don't know any of the details. If somebody goes to my chart, there's actually fourteen women on that but eleven of them we believe were eternity-only, two are undocumented so just take your guess, and then we have this pretend marriage with Sarah Ann, so fourteen in total. He theorizes that this was Joseph's attempt to satisfy the angel with a flaming sword. Joseph was completing these sealings in order to fulfill the angel's command and also placate Emma. We also address the rumor that Joseph sent men on missions so he could marry their wives. Brian nods: The problem is we have two sealing dates for Joseph and Marinda. The other date is from an affidavit Marinda signed that is well after Orson Hyde returning from Palestine. Even the one that appears to be a case where Joseph might have sent him on a mission, then he waits a year—it doesn't make sense. A year later we have Joseph being sealed to Marinda, but again we have a second date. The second date is a signed affidavit which we probably would consider to be more reliable than something that was just scrawled on a page in Joseph's journal, not in his handwriting but in I think Thomas Bullock's [handwriting.] Again that story is false, yet it's a sound bite. It's all over the internet. We've got to kill it. It's wrong. It's false. Joseph did not send men on missions and so he could marry their wives according to any reliable documentation. Why do you think that Joseph was sealed to other men's wives?

Minutes of the organization of the first high council of the Church, at Kirtland, Ohio, 17 February 1834 (see History of the Church, 2:28–31). The original minutes were recorded by Elders Oliver Cowdery and Orson Hyde. Two days later, the minutes were corrected by the Prophet, read to the high council, and accepted by the council. Verses 30 through 32, having to do with the Council of the Twelve Apostles, were added by the Prophet Joseph Smith in 1835 when he prepared this section for publication in the Doctrine and Covenants.
Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Hiram, Ohio, November 1831, at the request of Orson Hyde, Luke S. Johnson, Lyman E. Johnson, and William E. McLellin (see History of the Church, 1:227–29). Although this revelation was given in response to supplication that the mind of the Lord be made known concerning the elders named, much of the content pertains to the whole Church.
