The annual Montreal black metal festival Messe De Morte is in the books. We never made it out to La Belle Province ourselves, but it's a yearly trek for our good bud and sister show Wrestling Night in Canada co-host "Ducky" Dustin Maruca.   So this week we sat Mr. Maruca in the hotseat to the get the 411 on the fest. We go over the line up, the highs and lows and and the presence of Antifa (!). We're already eagerly awaiting next year.   In our "News, Views and Tunes", we get reintroduced to the Partridge Family (!!) and pay tribute to a Canadian Punk legend. Musically, we crank Messe headliners Marduk and Ancient. Plus some Personality Crisis, Faithful Breath, Demon Bitch, Void, The Headless Ghost and introduce Canuck bashers CHUZO in our "Indie Spotlight".   Horns Up!

We have a number of pop culture interests outside our beloved genre. Our fandom in the wonderful world of comic books outdates our residency in Metaldom. Indie comic companies have been clamoring to present stories about and inspired by current Metal artists. There have been some cool crossover stories as well. Think Elvira meets Vincent Price. So we took our love of "funny books" and thought up some cool crossovers featuring our fave Metal artists. How about Misfits/Scooby Doo, Gwar/XMen and Henry Rollins vs. Wolverine. The ideas are endless. In our "News, Views and Tunes", we lost another Punk legend and regret WrestleMania. Musically, we crank some Tyr, Thor, Trespass, Drop Dead, Witch Hazel, Victor Crowley and Personality Crisis. Horns Up!!

Equally celebrated as the lead singer-songwriter of the androgynous '70s glam punk groundbreakers The New York Dolls and for his complete reinvention as hepcat lounge lizard Buster Poindexter in the '80s, the chameleonic Johansen has created an entire genre unto himself, combining swing, blues, and rock for something at once mischievous and deeply personal. In Personality Crisis: One Night Only, Scorsese and co-director David Tedeschi (The 50 Year Argument), with the help of cinematographer Ellen Kuras (American Utopia), luminously capture the entertainer's January 2020 Cafe Carlyle set, where he performs as Poindexter singing the Johansen songbook, bringing downtown irreverence to this storied uptown joint. Presented alongside new and archival interviews, the concert is marvelously intimate and a testament to both a lost New York and a performer who remains as fresh and exciting as ever. In familiar Edgar Wright fashion, the director's new LAST NIGHT IN SOHO is brimming with cinematic allusion, but that self-reflexivity combined with a focus on a pair of similar-looking women whose identities begin to merge in uncanny ways brought us immediately to one of film's most mysterious and scrutinized movies: Ingmar Bergman's PERSONA. Broadly concerned with two women's power struggle and eventual convergence, Bergman's film is open to countless, sometimes overlapping interpretations, many of them concerning the nature of cinema itself, leading to its reputation as the “Mount Everest of cinematic analysis.” We consider that reputation, and what about the film invites it, in part one of this double double-feature. Plus, we respond to a multi-part question about DUNE that we only mostly disagree with. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about PERSONA, LAST NIGHT IN SOHO, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730.  Outro music: “Personality Crisis” by New York Dolls Learn more about your ad choices. Who am I? What is a personality? Is it simply a collection of memories and habit? Is this just my current avatar? Who knows? We are all changing and growing. Sometimes that growth is toward something or with someone. Other times our growth can shift us away from people and things. Change is the only constant. Acceptance is the only cure. Thanks for listening!!! Today we discuss how to deal with Other People's Problems. We can see resentments or we can see service and sometimes we need to just leave well enough alone. Thanks for listening!
